Mental health care in Massachusetts is sometimes a hit or miss proposition. Especially if you’re poor or indigent, or may present a danger to yourself or others.
For the 14-bed locked hospital unit at Carney — now owned by Steward Health Care — it apparently was such a “miss” proposition that they ended up sacking the entire staff. Yes, you heard me — all 29 psychiatric nurses and mental health counselors were let go about a month ago.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts continues to pay Carney Hospital to run its program, with all new staff.
Is it possible that 29 different professionals really were responsible for the four complaints? Or is this a perfect example of incompetent management and senior hospital executives covering their asses, and trying to put the ...

We present many examples showing that this is how the long-lived participants lived. However if your coworkers are making you miserable, and you do not have the adequate resources to do your job properly, then it is time to look for a new job when possible.
3. Also interesting to me was the discussion of marriage. It’s not necessarily that a person is married, but the quality of relationships in his/her life. What are some characteristics of a healthy marriage that lead to longevity?
Dr. Friedman: We are still looking in more detail at the characteristics of a healthy marriage. We know that divorced men fared poorly in terms of their future health and longevity. We know that the overall marital satisfaction of the man is more important to the future health of both the men and the wom...

By Mark A. CalabriaChinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to Washington brought renewed focus on China’s currency. It was likely the largest point of discussion between President Obama and President Hu. I suspect a less public, but related, issue was China looking for some certainty that America would make good on its obligations; after all, China is our largest lender.
What is often missed is the connection between these two issues: currency and debt. When China receives dollars for the many goods it sells us, instead of recycling those dollars into the purchase of US goods, it uses that money mostly to buy US Treasuries and Agencies (Fannie/Freddie securities). These large Treasury/Agency purchases (foreign holdings of GSE debt are over $1 trillion) have the effect of...

There’s an article in the New England Journal of Medicine entitled the “Unintended Consequences of Four-Dollar Generic Drugs.“ Ever one to hone in on unintended consequences of all stripes, I quickly clicked through. Oh, dear! What bad could possibly come of making drugs significantly more affordable?
Were more people demanding prescriptions for drugs they didn’t really need now that they were so cheap? (Dream on. I’m still twisting arms to get my high-risk cardiac patients to take their generic statins.) Were pharmacies going out of business, no longer to make ends meet without massive markups on brand name drugs, contributing to skyrocketing unemployment and otherwise adding to the country’s general economic malaise? Were cardiologists’ incomes plummeting because of saggin...

AstraZeneca agreed to a $520 million dollar settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and a consortium of state Medicaid agencies without admitting any wrongdoing in its marketing of the atypical antipsychotic drug, Seroquel.

“AstraZeneca paid kickbacks to doctors as part of an illegal scheme to market drugs for unapproved uses,” Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of health and human services, said at the event in Washington. She said the company promoted drugs for unapproved uses by children, the elderly, veterans and prisoners.
Glenn Engelmann, AstraZeneca’s U.S. general counsel, released a statement saying the company denies the allegations but settled the investigation with the payment.

The government said the company also paid for ghostwritten journal articles, and marketed the...

Fast Food Induces Haste, Impatience

We often think of fast food as a simple, quick, time-saving meal while we’re on the go. Families especially embrace the ability to fill up for a quick lunch or dinner without all the fuss of cooking (especially if they are already out shopping or going to the movies). All of this makes fast food a multi-billion dollar industry.
The lack of nutritional value in most fast food — such as that found at McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell or KFC — has been well-documented in numerous studies and documentaries. It’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of calories and sodium in a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (740 calories, 42 grams of fat, and 1380 mg of sodium) or a Whopper with Cheese (720 calories, 44 grams of fat, and 1240 mg of sodium).
But few...

Simultaneously, Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes publicly announced their split, a year after she collected her BA statue from the Academy for The Reader.
This is a tough road, but let’s keep going. Reese Witherspoon was named best actress in 2005 (Walk the Line); she finalized her divorce with Ryan Phillipe in October 2006. Hillary Sw. was on top in 20...

The ordinary American, if not the political class, recognizes that neither the Fed’s monetary actions nor the trillions in spending have helped them. Unemployment is in double digits. For instance, a patient approached today (who was confrontational from the get-go) and told us he wanted all of his medicines filled as a 90 days supply rather than 30/month. I’m more than happy to do that. DUH!! Our profit margin is usually better on 90 days– especially if it is a generic drug or one of Wal-Mart’s famous 4-dollar respect killers.
Ask Consumers if They Like a Weak Dollar

According to a Washington Post story today, “the weak dollar is one problem the United States loves to have.” The story reports how the fall of the dollar against the euro and other currencies in the past year has boosted U.S. exports and discouraged imports, cutting the trade deficit and allegedly boosting the U.S. economy. A weaker dollar has spurred complaints in Europe and elsewhere, but here at home the Post story leaves the impression the approval is practically unanimous.
Nowhere in the 1,058-word story is the impact on consumers ever mentioned. But it is American consumers who pay the biggest price when the dollars we earn buy less on global markets. We are paying more for oil, which not coincidentally has zoomed toward $80 as the dollar flounders. A weaker dollar means higher ...

The $4 million Union Station Bike Transit Center is scheduled to open in Washington, DC on October 2nd. According to an August Washington Post story, 80 percent of the cost of this opulent bike center is being borne by federal taxpayers via the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Look, I harbor no animosity against bike riders, but under what authority — legal or moral — does the federal government tax me in order to build bike centers for parochial, special interests? The Constitution?
But let’s pretend — and I mean pretend – that such federal expenditures are legitimate. The Post article say the center will have 150 indoor bike racks and 20 outdoors. A recent NPR article says it will hold 130 bikes. Whatever the figure, at a cost of $4 million, it c...

Just say no… to money? Perhaps that should be the new anti-drug slogan. A new report showed that “90 percent of paper money circulating in U.S. cities contains traces of cocaine.” When I first heard this, I thought, “no way!” Of course, now that I think about it, it makes complete sense.

First of all, today very little is done with cash. Drug deals, last I heard, still used cash. So it makes sense that there would be a higher count of cocaine than other germs on money. But lest you think cocaine is the only thing found on bills, think again. The average bill has many different types of debris on it, including dirt, food, or germs.
Incidentally, the average bill stays in circulation for 20 months. The most bills with cocaine on them included the $5, $10, $20, ...

It’s not just Americans worried about the flood of dollars from the Fed. The Chinese and now the Malaysians also are wondering if they should keep dealing in greenbacks.
Reports the Wall Street Journal:
Malaysia’s prime minister said China and his country are considering conducting their trade in Chinese yuan and Malaysian ringgit, joining a growing number of nations thinking of phasing out the dollar.
“We can consider whether we can use local currencies to facilitate trade financing between our two countries,” Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak told reporters at a briefing Wednesday after meeting with China’s premier, Wen Jiabao.

My Doula, Brandy, was a tremendous support at the birth of my son. She made everything so wonderful, and not only was she my Doula, she has now become a friend. So, when I read a post by her about a dear friend's little girl, I had to share the info.I spoke with Brandy today and understand that little Khylee has to travel with her mother daily, over an hour each way, to receive radiation treatments. The radiation treatments are being administered in order to help stop the spread of the tumor, but there is fear that these treatments will not save this little girl's life. Please read more below:Information below courtesy of www.just-one-dollar.com On June 11, 2009, 4-year-old Khylee M...

- Sure, the cost is low enough that I make a profit on the medicine, but in the grand scheme of things, I am getting bent over here. We are failing to realize the actual cost of filling a prescription here. I have to pay for: the tech to type it, the computer system that interprets it and runs a DUR/interaction check, the electricity to run it all, the A/C to keep the store cool (and gas for heat in the wi...

I don’t know about the people working at the NIH, but I was giddy about the NIH funding from Obama’s stimulus plan. Anyone who has worked at the institute knows how each dollar from the taxpayers is stretched to accomplish lofty goals for better health and innovative research.
So it’s no surprise that the $10.4 billion funding is met with anticipation and excitement, and questions about how exactly will the funds be disbursed. Acting Director Raynard Kington answered that question in a statement this week -

NIH will fund applications that are already on hand and expected to make progress in the next few years. Applications that have been judged for merit but did not receive awards last year due to lack of funds will finally get thei due this year.
NIH will focus on preserving and...

The weak dollar has greatly bolstered profits of US health care companies over the past year, but they could be hurt in coming months if the greenback continues to strengthen, Reuters writes.
Johnson & Johnson, which reported third-quarter earnings yesterday, predicted that fourth-quarter company sales will be crimped 1.5 percentage points by the resurgent dollar. That stands in contrast with J&J’s earlier prediction that a weak dollar would add 3.5 percentage points to sales in the period.
Mike Krensavage, principal of Krensavage Asset Management, says US drugmakers with the greatest percentage of overseas sales, such as Schering-Plough and Pfizer, would have the most to lose if the dollar keeps gaining value. That’s because a strong dollar lowers the value of overse...

It turns out that whoever said money can’t buy you happiness was wrong.
Money can buy you happiness, as long as you give some of the money away.
Dunn and colleagues (2008) conducted three studies that examined the relationship between Americans’ spending habits and their self-reported happiness. The first study was a national survey conducted on 632 Americans that asked to detail their income and spending habits. The participants were also asked to rate their general happiness level.
The researchers found that two things were correlated with greater general happiness levels — higher income (naturally) and spending on gifts for other people or money given to charity.
One could argue, well, hey, of course having more income can make you happy… But maybe it&#821...

There’s a lot of hype (and startups) to go along with trying to get you to buy into their “social networking” websites for health issues. Usually these companies have been backed by venture capitalists who expect both a relatively quick and large return on their money.
When a company is beholden not to its founders’ vision or its own mission (no matter how grand that mission or vision might be), but to financial backers who have little interest in the actual goals of the company other than to see it go public or purchased by the highest bidder as quickly as possible, guess who suffers the most? You’re right if you picked you, the user.
Since a company is an entity, not a person, it doesn’t have to be personal in these decisions. It makes them as a disc...
