I just learned (yes, I’m a little late to the party) about the Body Shop anti-barbie controversy from a post on Facebook. The ad to the left has been banned from most countries, because it was believed to be in bad taste. For me, it raises some very interesting questions.
First of all, it’s been my experience that the media has been relentless in its portrayal of feminine beauty as being a dress size zero. This is an unattainable goal for most of us, and a very narrow view of what is truly attractive and physically healthy. I can’t imagine how many young girls feel deeply flawed when they compare themselves to Barbie et al. If unchecked, that self-doubt and insecurity can become a lifelong self-esteem issue or worse. Eating disorders are becoming more and more common, and...

[This post was first published in October of 2007.]

Several weeks ago, as part of its much lauded “Dove Campaign for Real Beauty,” Unilever released “Onslaught,” a video (above) examining disturbing images of women in beauty-industry advertising. The video ends with this admonition to parents: “Talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does.”
It’s a powerful video with a disturbing collection of images. The situation of our daughters — and, by the way, our sons — seems both overwhelming and diabolical. Read the comments about the film on the Dove website discussion board, and you can feel the love and gratitude that viewers, particularly mothers, feel toward Dove for this film.
Skimming the first ten comments, one finds these re...

Does Dove Visibly Smooth Deodorant Reduce Underarm Hair?

Vananners asks…What do the Beauty Brains think about the new Dove Visibly Smooth Deodorant that supposed to minimize hair growth? I’ve been using it about 3 weeks now and feel like I’ve noticed a difference. The hair seems to grow slower, is softer and easier to shave.
The Left Brain replies:
As I pointed out in the Forum, hair growth minimizers are more marketing than anything else. If the product actually worked to slow down hair growth then it would be considered a drug and require much more extensive testing. In fact, if you check the claims that Dove’s website makes about Visibly Smooth, you’ll see that they do NOT claim that it does reduces hair growth.

Dove Grey ReaderA wonderful story from Dove Grey Reader, who is now a retired nurse and health visitor. There she is above when she was training at Great Ormond Street. Any excuse to look at that hat again. DGR is now a well established literary critic, and has recently been reviewing Tales of a Country GP by Dr Michael Sparrow. It may not be a work of litearary merit, but it is of particular intererst to DGR as she used to work with him when she was a health visitor. She tells of a visit she did to a house...decorated inside and out to match the parrot perched in the centre of the living roomAnd she goes on to tell of two old fashioned GPs, a married couple, Dr "Marg" and Dr "Charles".Dr John SparrowWhen some years later Dr Charles died during morning surgery as local legend has it and Mi...

“Sleep-driving” while under the influence of Ambien has captured wide attention and continues to be an alarming problem. Ambien (zolpidem) is one of the new “Z” drugs used as sleeping pills that are popular in commercials and doctor’s sample cupboards. But alternatives exist (most obviously the other Z’s - zopiclone/Lunesta, and zalepron/Sonata).
There have been occasional newspaper reposts of sleep-driving of individuals arrested while sleep-driving, people who took Ambien at bedtime and didn’t even wake up during the arrest process. Like Devin Dove, who remained asleep until he woke up in a hospital bed and was handed a ticket for DUI by a nurse. The previous night he’d had no alcohol, no drugs - only his prescribed Ambien - and no recolle...

Armageddon 2001 was the big DC “event comic” of 1991. There were two bookend comics, Armageddon 2001 #1 and #2, at the beginning and end of the summer. In between, all the annuals (back with every series had an annual) tied into the storyline: in the not too distant future of 2001 (remember, this was written in 1991), the villainous Monarch has taken over the entire world and slaughtered all the super-heroes. The kicker is that he used to be a super-hero himself before becoming evil, but no one knows which hero. One of the citizens of the dystopic future uses experimental equipment to gain time-based superpowers. As “Waverider,” he can travel through time. He can also look into a person’s future just by touching them. He resolves to use his powers to travel ba...

This is the final regular issue of Hawk & Dove. It’s an above average issue, and manages to tie together most of the various plot lines of the series.
After being tricked by Barter and an unnamed co-conspirator, Hawk is suspected of causing a car crash and trying to kill Senator Tom O’Neill. Hawk is now in hiding and on the run from the police. He’s also mad at being played for a fool, and wants to take it out on Senator O’Neill — or whoever is in his body now.
Dawn is looking for Hawk as well. She is visited at home by Mrs. Hall, Hank’s mother, who admits that she has long known that Hank was Hawk, and it didn’t take much to deduce that Dawn is the new Dove. She implores Dawn to find Hank and clear everything up. In the middle of the convers...

Instead of the normal writing team of Karl and Barbara Kesel, this issue credits just Barbara as the writer, but there is no discernible change is style. The art is handled by the reliable team of Greg Guler and Al Vey. It’s a fairly dark storyline this issue with the forces behind Don’s “resurrection” finally revealed1.
Hawk returns to his apartment to find another message from his deceased brother Don. Hank is informed that there will soon be a fatal car crash at a particular corner. He is to crush the sapphire he stole from the Smithsonian and sprinkle it over the victim of the car crash. This will bring Don back to life. Hank is concerned about the morality of the plan, but Don reminds him that the victim will already be dead, so no harm done. Reluctantly, Hawk...

In the midst of Hawk’s crime spree, this issue takes a look back at when Dawn first learned Hawk’s secret identity.
Dove swings by Hank’s apartment, but he’s not there. She let’s herself in — he didn’t hide the key well — and sits to wait for him. While she’s waiting, the answering machine picks up a call from Hank’s dead brother Don and she begins to get an idea of what Hawk’s been up to.
Dawn fixes a cup of coffee and remembers when she first heard that Don, the original Dove, was dead. With his comment, Dawn realizes that she is the only Dove and decides that she needs to find H...
