You’re going along, minding your own business when all of a sudden; POW! It’s an exacerbation!
These things happen to all of us now and again. We hope, with the use of our disease-modifying drugs, that they happen less often and that when they do they may be (May Be) less severe. The excuse I’ll give for my week without posting is that I’ve been in the midst of one for nearly two weeks now.
The funny part is/was, I had an appointment set with one of my neurologists smack in the middle of it!
I, of course, knew what was going on with my body. The new symptom; constant numbness of my left thigh, was not something I’d experienced before and it had lasted for over 4 days. The “bumble bees” in my feet and legs are with me over half the time now.
Going through the...

As I mentioned earlier this week, my travel schedule has been hectic these past several weeks. One thing travel affords as way of paying one back for the toll extracted from the body is countless hours on airplanes. Hours I’ve used to catch up on some reading.
One thing that I’ll blush a bit to admit to you is that I seldom read many periodicals, even the “important ones”, from cover to cover. Sure; I’ll read many if not most of the articles but a few, I’ll just skim.
Over the past weeks, I’ve read this last issue of Momentum front to back. I was a little bit surprised to read articles about two research studies in which I participated as a “subject”.
We often hear about and talk about clinical trials of new drug therapies for MS. We seldom hear about the “qua...

DATA ON CLINICAL DRUG TRIALS NOW AVAILABLE Why can’t we see the cancer trial data available? Why the reluctance to share? We need an attitude shift. Change is happening in medicine as well as politics. A law last month will require sponsors of all clinical trials of drugs and devices that later are approved to post summary results in a federal database. This allows all findings to appear, even the negative results that often get buried. Many say that this data ma be difficult to analyze without their help. This new policy requires companies to register trials of drugs to a public web site (ClinicalTrials.gov). This lets outside researchers to analyze the positive and negative results. The data must be posted within 12 months of the trials completion for within 30 days afte...

This wouldn’t be Mental Nurse without a mention of this news story.
I have to say, I have only read the one article about it and not looked any deeper, but incase anyone missed it it’s here.

A NEW drug capable of halting Alzheimer’s disease in its tracks was hailed yesterday as a “hugely exciting” development in the battle against the devastating condition.
The drug, developed and tested on patients in Scotland, slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s by as much as 81 per cent. (Source: Mental Nurse)

Filed under: Research, Products, SupportThere's a story running on CNN Money about the progress of Oramed Pharmaceuticals' insulin capsule, which is currently under development. The capsule, taken orally, could provide a more convenient way for diabetics to get insulin than through shots. And popping a gel cap would, needless to say, also be more convenient than toting and blowing on one of those big old clunky Exubera inhalers. In the quest to get its product to market, Oramed needs cash, and lots of it. Answering the call, a combination of private investors are putting up more than two million dollars in financing for the Israel-based company. It's hoped the money will help to propel the insulin capsule through completion of Phase 1 (drug safety) trials by the middle of next year. Said Ora...

I called a local research place and asked the [very chatty] secretary what I should do if I thought I had one of things listed on their advertisement. "Well, which one did you see, depression?" "No, I was looking at the Bipolar one." Here's the basic of the conversation:I call and make an appointment[this is all based on me asking questions] and you come in for a free consultation, the doctor and staff are very experienced and it's really good. That was obviously not the canned answer to entering a drug trial for bipolar, depression, ADHD or children depression I wanted. So I asked this chatty secretary more.1. How long is the evaluation? because years ago I had an 11 year old dx within a 30 min appt. for OCD and that was quickly changed to Bipolar."Oh, NO we don't do that here, the intervie...

Filed under: Drug, Lung Cancer, Clinical Trials, Daily newsPharmaceutical giant Pfizer has decided to scrap development of a drug designed to fight lung cancer, it was recently announced. The drug, tentatively known only as PF-3512676, was shown in trials to be no more effective when combined with chemotherapy than chemo alone, and the drug manufacturers behind it reasoned that it wasn't worth investing any additional revenue into. Nonetheless, a significant amount has already been poured in to the drug, so it comes a big hit for Pfizer and partnering company Coley.Pfizer, in the meantime, continues working on several other cancer drugs, including ones for breast and colorectal cancers.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments (So...
