AHRQ is about to do a comparative effectiveness review to look at the evidence on nitrous oxide for labor pain relief, and is soliciting public comment on the key questions that will be reviewed. This will help make sure that when the review gets started, the right questions are being asked and answered. This project is of particular interest to me – in addition to my interest the topic itself – because I am part of the project team conducting the review. More details are at Our Bodies Our Blog; comments close December 8, 2010.

By Ian VasquezThe apparent drug gang killings of U.S. consular employees this weekend in Juarez, Mexico are a bloody reminder that President Obama is getting the United States involved in yet another war it cannot win. Drug gang killings also occurred in Acapulco, with a total of 50 such fatalities nationwide over the weekend.
Unfortunately, Obama has responded to the latest incident by following the same failed strategy as his predecessors when confronted with drug war losses: a stronger fight against drugs.
Though the deaths are the first in which Mexican drug cartels appear to have so brazenly targeted and killed individuals linked to the U.S. government, illicit drug trade violence has killed some 18,000 people in Mexico since President Calderon came to power in December 2006—more th...

The Washington Post reports that despite reports of widespread violence and human rights abuses since Mexico increased its fight against the drug trade, the U.S. government is considering pumping more money to their failing efforts:
The Obama administration has concluded that Mexico is working hard to protect human rights while its army and police battle the drug cartels, paving the way for the release of millions of dollars in additional federal aid.
The Merida Initiative, a three-year, $1.4 billion assistance program passed by Congress to help Mexico fight drug trafficking, requires the State Department to state that the country is taking steps to protect human rights and to punish police officers and soldiers who violate civil guarantees. Congress may withhold 15 percent of the annual ...

On Friday, the FDA issued a warning about Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream (as Christine at OBOS noted), “because the product contains potentially harmful ingredients that may cause respiratory distress or vomiting and diarrhea in infants.” The FDA warned consumers not to use the product (intended for nursing mothers), explaining:
Potentially harmful ingredients in Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream are chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol. Chlorphenesin relaxes skeletal muscle and can depress the central nervous system and cause respiratory depression (slow or shallow breathing) in infants. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that is primarily used in cosmetics and medications. It also can depress the central nervous system and may cause vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydra...

As further proof that some people who want to restrict abortion access don’t bother with logical consistency, a bill that just passed in the Missouri house (and was intended to deal with the sale of drugs that can be used in meth production, such as cold medicines with pseudoephedrine) now has an amendment added by Rep. Ray Salva which adds mifepristone (a medical abortion drug) to the list of Schedule I Controlled Substances. The specific criteria for Schedule I is that the substance has high potential for abuse; and has no accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or lacks accepted safety for use in treatment under medical supervision. This class includes drugs such as ecstasy, heroin, marijuana, and LSD.
I wonder if the Representative knows that mifepristone is not o...

The FDA is considering issuing drug report cards that inform the public about problems with drugs and drug side effects. This would be for drugs that the FDA has already approved. MSNBC.com reports the FDA is looking for new ideas following the "public outcry over the withdrawal of the painkiller Vioxx."

As part of a pilot program, the Food and Drug Administration will issue drug "report cards" that would detail unexpected side effects that emerge only after a drug has been approved. The reports also would include follow-up studies and details about how the drugs are being used.

The proposal is one of roughly a dozen initiatives, new and ongoing, that the FDA unveiled Tuesday in response to a recent report by a committee of experts at the Institute of Medicine that criticized the agency'...
