Happy Birthday, Baby Boomers: One More Eligible For Medicare Every 8 Seconds

Today begins a lame duck session of Congress before it breaks for Thanksgiving. It’s the final chance to work out a temporary patch to Medicare reimbursement before a 23 percent cut takes effect Dec. 1. Doctors are going to stop taking new Medicare patients if the cuts happen. And, as one breast cancer surgeon explains, if Medicare stops paying, so to private insurers and even military health programs. Congress will meet in December, but the damage will be done.
This all is happening two weeks before the baby boomers become eligible for Medicare. That populous generation starts to turn 65 beginning on Jan. 1, which means they become eligible for Medicare on Dec. 1, which, as we mentioned, is the day the 23 percent Medicare pay cut kicks in. Boomers will continue to become eligible ...

Medicare Reimbursement: A 23 Percent Cut Soon To Come?

“It will never happen.”
“They know better than to do it.”
“They realize the disaster it would be if they let it pass.”
That’s what I hear. I hear that the upcoming SGR adjustment, the one that will cut Medicare reimbursement by 23 percent, won’t go through.
In case you missed it, the SGR is a formula coming from the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 that does automatic cuts to Medicare reimbursement. This year we witnessed a legislative game of chicken in congress, with both sides agreeing that it was a bad idea to screw physicians in a time that they are trying to fix healthcare.
To describe our house as chaos right now is deeply unfair to chaos. (Our house is in a state which would make chaos hit the smelling salts pretty hard.) We are packing, clearing, shredding, and sorting, in largely good-humoured fashion, although we’re taking it in turn to have our moments. We have found a company who can turn an empty room into our longed-for long library, and another to put up a craft studio/writing space for me in the garden. (I have an idea for the next book.) We are valiantly eating our way through the contents of the fridge and freezer. (That’s going rather well at the moment. Last night, beef and red wine casserole. The day before, chicken curry. By the time moving comes around, though, it’s going to be baked beans with frozen peas and preserved lem...

I must confess haven’t had a great week in terms of productivity. I had planned to have the 2nd draft of ‘How To Be Rich and Happy’ finished by Thursday and it still isn’t done. Following up from losing most of Wednesday to nasty, smelly plumbing issues, and then a 5 minute video shoot on Friday taking 6 hours, I had problems with my car again this weekend.
When I was writing about the worst companies I have ever dealt with I have no idea where my head was at to forget Toyota. I’ve had two Toyota’s and they are without doubt the worst two cars I have owned in the last twenty years, but don’t let me set off down that road again, or we’ll both be here all day.
On Saturday morning I was planning on rewriting the chapter in my book called ‘Shut The Duck Up’ and use ...

In continuation with my previous article, I often add this joke to explain the difference between internal medicine doctors and surgeons to people who ask me “What is Internal Medicine?.
Four friends decide to go duck hunting. An internal medicine doctor (IMD), psychiatrist, surgeon and a pathologist. They wake up very early and reach the marshes waiting for dawn and the birds to fly.
IMD says ”I will take the first shot“ and everyone agrees.
Soon the sun starts to rise. The IMD notices a bird flying towards the sunlight. He takes out his gun and aims at the bird but before he shoots he stops to think - ”Is this a duck? Is this really a duck?“ By the time he decides the species of the bird, the duck disappears in the horizon.
The psychiatrist says ”Next shot is mine.“ Everyon...

I think we'll get better about the time. About 20 minutes seems to be a good balance. This is actually the second half of the original podcast, which went long so we sliced it into two podcasts. Don't expect to get a podcast every other day... if we do one every other week, I'll be pleasantly surprised (though I'm striving for every Sunday). Maybe we can be like Digg's Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht and drink alcohol at the beginning of each podcast... that would be interesting. Here are the show notes for the podcast: December 10, 2006: RootsTopics include: Dr Anonymous is again not mentioned in this podcast (but we do thank him for the id...
