The duct of Luschka is a normal variant that drains bile directly from the liver parenchyma into the gallbladder. It typically is located on the posterior gallbladder wall and is injured or unrecognized in .04% to 0.2% of cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal.)
It most commonly presents 1 week after gallbladder resection with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain from the freely draining bile into the abdominal cavity.
ERCP is performed for suspected duct of Luschka injuries as the test is both diagnostic and therapeutic. If the leak is considered low-grade, sphincterotomy is performed and is successful in closing the leak about 90% of the time. For high-grade leaks (i.e., leaks that present relatively earlier in the post-operative course) stenting is used with virtually all leaks closing....

Left pleural effusion (white area in the lung field on the readers' right)
Chylothorax results when there is injury to the thoracic duct and lymph tissue escapes in the chest cavity causing a pleural effusion, most commonly the left chest.
Initial management steps include chest tube drainage of the affected pleural space and nothing per mouth with supplementation of total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
If leak persists after two weeks, surgery is performed to ligate the thoracic duct. (Source: Inside Surgery)

Common warts are thickened, crusty lesions with noticeable black pinpoint dots. Contrary to what most people think, these aren’t caused by frog’s urine.
They are caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are a lot of ways to get rid of these pesky lesions but every technique aims to destroy the virus.
You can apply an over-the-counter salicylic acid gel or solution, freeze it with liquid nitrogen, zap it with a laser or have it cauterized but I think the cheapest way to do it is to use duct tape. That’s right, DUCT TAPE!.
Simply cut a piece of duct tape and apply it on the wart then leave it on for 7 days. On the eighth day, take it off and repeat the process until the wart disappears.
It may take a month or two for it to completely resolve . This isn’t a guar...

The normal liver is soft and smooth and is connected to the small intestine by the bile duct which carries the bile formed in the liver to the intestines. Nearly all of the blood that leaves the stomach and intestines must pass through the liver. Acting as the body’s largest chemical factory, it has thousands of functions including the production of clotting factors, blood proteins, bile and more than a thousand different enzymes, the breakdown of old red blood cells, the metabolism of cholesterol, the storage of energy (glycogen) to fuel muscles, maintenance of normal blood sugar concentration, the regulation of several hormones and detoxification of drugs and poisons (including alcohol). Cirrhosis is a chronic hepatic disease that is characterized by destru...

Although none of the editors of InsideSurgery participated in his care, we have noted reports that Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha has died from complications following removal of his gallbladder.
The Associated Press is reporting tonight that Pennsylvania Congressman Bob Brady of Philadelphia has stated that Murtha suffered from injury to his large intestine during the operation at Bethesda Naval Hospital to remove his gallbladder.
The gallbladder was reportedly removed laparoscopically or as it is sometimes described via a minimally invasive technique.
Murtha was apparently discharged to home and then presented to the Virginia Hospital Center complaining of abdominal pain and a fever.
Several days ago he was reported to be in the intensive care unit, indicating that a serious comp...

While away some time playing really silly online games like this

Don’t take this Friday funny thing too far – some people do…

And for those who are struggling for something to dothis weekend – uses for duct tape, see below:

But actually, go here if you want to know how to do this for real…though that’s a paper tape version. For those who don’t know – great for tailors dummies when you’re sewing costumes or clothing!
For more really silly things to do with duct tape – these guys can’t really be beaten! Kids, do not do this at home (pick somewhere more wicked)
I think that’s about it from me today – got to go find some more duct tape from somewhere…. (Source: HealthSkills Weblog)

A 5-year-old Arizona boy was bound at his hands and feet with duct tape by his father, as reported in today’s AZFamily.com. Jasper Smalley has been diagnosed with “Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome.” Here’s what allegedly occurred:
[Jasper’s mother, April Smalley] says one day her ex-husband found out Jasper was caught hitting other children at daycare. “He called me after he had taped him up and told me he had duct-taped our son. I asked him to remove the tape immediately, and he said he wouldn’t. He said he was being punished.”
It was a punishment that made its mark in Jasper who was bound at his wrists and ankles.
April explains, “There were red abrasions on his wrists. It looked almost like where the tap...

Wyeth was issued a new round of subpoeanas over its heartburn med by a grand jury in Massachusetts investigating pricing and marketing activities, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Current and former employees, in fact, have already testified before the grand jury this year.
In 2005, Wyeth was first served a subpoena by the same federal prosecutor regarding Protonix, seeking documents from Wyeth dating back to January 2000. “We are cooperating fully,” a Wyeth spokesman wrote Bloomberg News in an e-mail. Until recently, Protonix was one of Wyeth’s top-selling products, but second-quarter sales fell 59 percent, to $228 million, thanks to competition from unauthorized generics.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to participate in the Microsoft Vision to Venture Event for Women Entrepreneurs here in St. Louis. My sincere thanks to Microsoft for supporting women entrepreneurs. It was a pleasure to meet other supportive and energetic business women. I also enjoyed participating as a panelist and was honored to share my personal start-up story and field questions from other business women. Every business owner has a startup story. As I networked with other women, it made me think about how each of us face individual yet similar challenges while trying to grow our businesses. Friends who don’t get the vision. Parents who think the college degree in English Lit is wasted in a pet grooming business. A spouse who thinks a “9 to 5” is the key to a comfortab...

But yes, the photo is a photo of an actual object in our actual apartment: It’s Charlie’s “photo bucket” that he keeps his (just as you guessed) photos in. This bucket was found by me some years ago on a shelf with bags of Halloween candy no one wants (those tiny Charms lollipops) at Target. It was high time for Charlie and me to make a hasty exit.
Filed under: Breast Cancer, Prevention, Research, Young Adult Cancers, Cancer Pre-vivorsWouldn't it be great if we could find breast cancer long before something appears on a mammogram?
An FDA approved test called the Halo Breast Pap Test System might be able to do just that by collecting Nipple Aspirate Fluid (NAF). The test is designed to detect abnormal cells in the breast. The Halo system can identify benign disease as well as abnormal ductal cells that can be precursors to cancer.
Some research has suggested that ductal fluid excreted from the nipple can be used to identify a women's specific risk of breast cancer. A women with abnormal cells in the fluid has a four to five times greater risk of developing breast cancer.
