Our blue bear called David Cameron was a big favourite today in Consett. It was lovely to be part of the buzz surrounding the General Election process and meeting people who are going to be voting Conservative tomorrow.
The Conservative campaign here in North West Durham has been going from strength to strength. Today the team (Margaret pictured here) were out campaigning in the centre of Crook - with David Cameron (our blue bear). The children adored him.It has been such a great honour to meet the hundreds and hundreds of people on the doorstep. If I had a pound for every time I heard 'You're the first ever candidate who has ever called', Gordon Brown's debt would be greatly reduced. The Conservatives are not taking the voters for granted in the North East and I am very much looking forward to Election night. The choice is yours - Vote for change - Vote Conservative.
A big thank you to Brooks Newmark MP for Braintree, who kindly helped out by joining our campaign team in Consett. We were delighted to get such a positive response. There was a clear message that the people of Consett are fed up of being taken for granted by the Labour Party. So, if you want change for the better - Vote Conservative on May 6th.
This report follows the Sir James Dyson report I blogged about a couple of days ago. I am glad to see that the Conservative Party are not just thinking about the election, but are also planning ahead. Thinking long term about how to improve science training in schools, Universities and increase research and development to ultimately increase jobs within the science and manufacturing sector. The last decade has been termed the decade of the celebrity and excess, immortalised by Hirst's diamond skull. Let's hope any future Conservative Government returns respect to the hard working British taxpayers. (Source: The Psychiatrist Blog)

I am looking forward to the year of change. Gordon Brown has sold our gold reserves at knockdown prices, sent our troops to war on a peace time budget and under funded the prisons service so that thousands of convicts were released without serving even half of their sentences. Labour have raised the tax burden on the poorest, penalised two parent families, allowed grade inflation in schools, ballooned quangos and lacked any moral leadership in dealing with the MP’s expenses scandal. Labour leave an irresponsible debt legacy. These are just some of the reasons why I ask for your support in the up coming General Election. David Cameron must prepare to get Britain working again and we must ensure that we do as much as possible to ensure he gets the keys to Number 10. And this means winning N...

I just read about a strain of H1N1 flu that’s resistant to Tamiflu. Four of these cases have been reported at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. I wondered if it has possibly infected people in the transplant clinic? A friend had her SCT at Duke one year when the flu was rampant in the transplant clinic. She said that a few of the patients became quite ill. She had the flu herself. She recovered and had a second stem cell transplant.
“All four of the North Carolina patients were hospitalized and were very ill with underlying severely compromised immune systems and multiple other complex medical conditions, according to researchers from the Duke University Medical Center. Three of the four died. No details have been released about how the patients caught the re...

We went to a concert Friday night in Chapel Hill that featured three harpsichords! The program included music by Bach and a local composer named Edwin McLean. I really enjoyed McLean’s music, and will be looking for a CD.

One of the performers, Elaine Funaro, played her new harpsichord (Opus 333). The instrument was built by Richard Kingston. The harpsichord was painted by Durham artist Lisa Creed.

Monica and I got to go to the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC today for business. It was great! I took some pictures through the fences with my iPhone camera, and this was the best of them. I’m afraid I can’t tell you what type of lemur this is, but I’ll find out.
Just before the meeting at the Lemur Center, I had a checkup at the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic. I’ll have the results of my tests on Wednesday. It’s been almost two years since I had a skeletal survey, so I scheduled that for September. The skeletal survey is a series of xrays of the long bones, skull and ribs and spine. I asked about a recent report I read that suggests that PET scans should be used for monitoring myeloma. My doctor does those if there’s activity such as an in...

My doc gave me an rx for Lyrica a few weeks ago to help with the neuropathy. I posted on the mailing list to get an idea of what kinds of side effects others had experienced when they used it. Mostly, I’d say they were not very positive responses. Almost everyone quit taking Lyrica because of side effects such as edema. One patient’s experience was pretty severe. I won’t be taking it. My PN isn’t present 100% of the time (although the numbness is). I’ll just take tramadol or some other medication PRN.
The issue is that I plan on making a very long trip out of the country in the spring. The PN is worse when I can’t either be moving or have my legs up, so I was concerned about taking an extremely long flight. It might just be best for me to b...

Austin is described as white, 5′5″ tall, and weighing 160 pounds. He has a heavy build, brush cut, light brown hair and blue eyes.

I thought I’d give a visual progress report of my hair growth. Here’s a picture I took today. You can compare it to one I took on October 13, 2007.

Kind of weird, huh? And, not too attractive. My hair started to fall out in September, after I had high dose chemo (melphalan) on August 28th. [...] (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

I got the results of the tests done last week at Duke. The report states, “Compared to 8/3/07, no significant change in previously characterized IgA lambda components from 0.28 to 0.19 and 0.12 to 0.18 g/dL.” The PA let me know that it’s possible for the m-spike(s) to drop more in the next few months.
Tomorrow I’ll have my one month check-up. It will have been a month since I was released from the Duke SCT Clinic. I feel pretty well, with no major complaints. I’m filling a jug for them, and will have blood drawn when I get there. Aside from CBCs, it will probably be at least a [...] (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

I made it home yesterday. I’m SO glad to be here. I went straight to bed when I got home, and slept for what felt like forever. I got up at 5:30 this morning, walked the dog and then went back to bed until 10:30. It felt great to sleep in. It’s nice not to [...] (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

I’ve just been told I’m going home tomorrow! I feel as well now as I did when I came in here, so I can only imagine that things will get better and better as time goes by. Years of drugs and chemo take their toll.
My WBC today was 7.0! My HGB dipped a little to 9.8, and the platelets are at 23. This chemo experience was a lot like Cytoxan, in terms of what it did to my counts, with the exception of the WBC, which got to 400 at lits lowest.
Overall, the experience wasn’t as horrific as I [...] (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

The only thing I have to report today is that my WBC is 4.7! Can you believe it? As soon as I get the rest of the results, I’ll post them. It was mentioned that I might get to go home earlier than predicted.

My WBC was 1.3 today, which is quite an improvement over yesterday (0.3). My nurse tells me it wouldn’t be a stretch for it be double that tomorrow. I could be going home as early as Friday. I hope I can.

I need platelets and potassium today, so I’m going to get hooked up and I’ll write more later.
