Patient educational DVDs now being produced in India in Indian languages !

By passing the Clinical Establishment Act, the Indian government is planning to make accreditation compulsory for clinics, to ensure that patients get good quality medical care from doctors, because they will be forced to meet basic standards.I am thrilled to observe that one of the requirements for accreditation is that doctors provide patient educational materials in their clinics. The good news is that innovative companies like PEAS ( in which I am an angel investor) are producing patient educational DVDs in Indian languages, customised for Indian patients !Information Therapy will hopefully become an integral part of Indian medical practise ! Welcome to our third reader giveaway! (And trust us, it won’t be our last.)
It’s Earth Week! Disneynature, the studio that brought you the record-breaking film Earth, is bringing OCEANS to the big screen on April 22, 2010, and will help raise money during its opening week (April 22-28), for The Nature Conservancy’s work to save coral reefs in the Bahamas.
Nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and OCEANS boldly chronicles the mysteries that lie beneath.
It’s a quiet day at work and I haven’t posted here in some time so thought I’d share some of my musings.
Today I find myself thinking about Blu-Ray…
For a number of reasons I have held off getting a Blu-Ray player up to now but it seems to me the time is probably right to get one.

Blu-Ray is clearly the dominant only HD movie disc format following the demise of HD-DVD (I still have a few of those along with my X-box 360 HD-DVD add-on). There does not seem to be any obvious successor in the pipeline so Blu-Ray will probably be with us for a few years to come
Most shops have a decent sized Blu-Ray section now with an increasing selection of titles at better prices. This is only going to improve further. Nowadays if I’m thinking about buying a DVD I’m alwa...

It’s sometimes amazing to me, how complicated one human life can be. Of course, I think of all of you and know life is complicated for you, also. I know many of you have had the same thought from time to time when life’s problems begin to pile up. Sometimes you feel on top of the heap; other times you’re certain it’s on top of you. Life is never simple for those of us with complex health issues, which is why we need to be on guard. Don’t we have enough to worry about?
We are faced with being defensive as we do battle against whatever injury, disease or other unpleasant visitor has nestled into our lives and bodies. We swallow handfuls of pills; give ourselves shots, stretch screaming muscles and jump through any other hoop the doctors hold up. I’m sure the word “jump” will ...

I just got done posting about the cause of American obesity (hint: it’s all about portion control) but as we know exercise is also important, and for more than just weight loss. Exercise helps build strong bones, increases memory function, and allows our hearts and lungs to operate efficiently.

I was happy to have received this Teen Walk DVD from the folks at Leslie Sansone. They have been very generous with their time and education, and are passionate about getting people healthy. (Not just “thin“!)
So without further adieu, the winner is: Shannon!

Those that read this blog regularly know that I’m a huge fan of Leslie Sansone. She has excellent walking DVDs that you can do, regardless of your fitness level. I have used several of her DVDs and they’ve all been really great. That’s why I was anxious to read her book, Walk Away the Pounds.

The book is a six-week program to gradually increase your fitness level. The thing I liked about it was that it wasn’t a book that went with her DVDs (although you certainly could do them as part of this) but instead she focused on walking in general. She made it about steps, which translate to miles. She also suggested small changes, and followed those up with a weekly tally sheet so you could keep track of how much you were doing.
Reading Leslie’s story was just as in...

You never know where you are going to get a great idea. Sometimes it is as easy as receiving an email from a "sharp" reader.Today, K Lynne emailed me with an excellent idea on how readers who don't have HBO could get to see The Alzheimer's Project DVD. Just a thought: When I could not find the "Family Matters-Coming Together for Alzheimer's" award winning movie a couple years ago (for a reasonable $), I was able to get the Boston Public Library to purchase it for me (& then put it in circulation)! It was really simple; I just asked and they did the rest! :) What an idea!So I decided to give it a test drive--down to the Delray Beach library. The librarian handed me a couple of forms and before you knew it, I had requested the DVD and the book.Next, I asked for the head librarian and sug...

Earlier in the month I asked ‘Where Do You Go When You Die?’
It’s not exactly a light question but the reason I brought it up was because I had just run across a new documentary called The Path which was due to released mid Febuary and I had arranged for a DVD giveaway for Healthbolt readers.
I haven’t seen the DVD yet but the trailer gives the impression that it would definitely be worth checking out.
See for yourself…

The Path DVD giveaway is being extended until the 14th of February. So go and check it out and then leave a comment over at Where Do You Go When You Die?

Death and Taxes - they are the two real guarantees in life. And of the two, taxes are probably the one that we understand the most about. Death, on the other hand, remains a mystery. For ever, people have been asking the question ‘what is your purpose and why on earth do we live only to die?’
Many have tried to answer this question but in the end, death and the possibility of an afterlife, remains a mystery.
The directors of a new documentary The Path are hoping to remove some of this mystery surrounding death, dying, and, in particular, the afterlife.

It features interviews with 13 individuals - well renowned authors, practitioners and well respected local practitioners in Upstate New York - who offer their their expertise on their own souls path, what they have learne...

Getting your body back into shape after having a baby isn’t as easy as the celebrity moms seem to make it. Seeing them pose for photographs only a few months after giving birth with svelte new figures often puts unrealistic expectations on us mere mortals.
But luckily for us, there are people like Helene Bryne from BeFit Mom around to provide assistance and guidance.
And the lucky Healthbolt reader who gets her -“Exercise After Pregnancy: How to Look and Feel Your Best” (Celestial Arts, 2001) – and DVD, “Bounce Back Fast!: Post Natal Core Conditioning” - is…

Congratulations Cee. You’ll be receiving an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
As for the rest of us, have a listen to Helene’s radio interview at the Total Fitnes...

We do not, as I’ve noted from time to time, have a TV set—a fact which, when I happened to mention it to my students a while back, completely shocked them. “What do you do?” they sputtered. The class was my Elementary Latin class and it was one of those “teachable moments” when I could have launched into a discussion about “how did the Romans spend their free time” and “what about those giadiator fights.” It was the week before exams and we had so much to review and so I let the moment past, and got back to the fourth conjugation of verbs.
Apparently I’d made an impression on my students, as they brought up the not-having-a-tv business a couple of times (mostly, I suspect, to avoid having to think about that inevitable entit...

Is that one of the stages of being an autistic parent - that at some point you realize and accept that life is what it is?
For me, I would say, yes, very much, and that, too, hope starts with acceptance.
Charlie was around 5 years old when I let go of feeling I had to save him from, and fight against, and do the warrior mom thing. I’m not saying I don’t have moments when a shadow of the old “fightin’ spirit” passes through me (pre-IEP meeting, for instance, or when you get The Stare-’n'-Shakes-Head Combo in the supermarket).
I’m not much of a gym person. I’ve been known to join and then never quite get around to getting there.
I use pretty much every excuse under the sun not to go – it’s too cold, it’s too hot, it’s too wet, it’s snowing, there’s no time, it takes too much time, I have to clean the house (yes, I even resort to that one just to get out of going to the gym).
But I’m okay with exercising at home. There’s a crosstrainer sitting in the home office and often, especially when I’m suffering from writer’s block, I do 5 or 6 kilometers and not only feel refreshed but also unblocked. And then there are numerous exercise videos and DVDs cluttering up the TV cabinet, all of which get used from time to time.
But just when I think I have enough exercise DVD’s to last me a life tim...

It’s all about yoga today.
First, I posted about the winner of the Yoga Paws.
And now, I’m posting about Healthbolt’s latest giveaway – a Yoga DVD. But it’s not just any old yoga DVD. This one is by Sadie Nardini, director of East West Yoga in New York City and founder of Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga, a form of yoga considered a ‘calorie-torcher’ by Time Out New York. Apparently it can transform the body faster in 60 minutes than most yoga does in 90 minutes.
This Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga:Power Hour DVD is full on and features a 40-minute Floor Flow, Core Salutations (Warm + Energize + Tone), a 20-Minute Wall Flow, Core Stretch (Invert + Detox + Stretch ) plus a BEGINNER COMMENTARY on Alignment Tips and Modifications for Basic Level!

Yes, you read that right. The PR organizer of the Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program giveaway had so much fun reading the comments that you all left that she contacted the sponsors and organized for not one but two Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program sets to be given away. So I suggested that maybe she’d like to choose the winners.
Yes, I know it breaks with the usual ‘select a winner by random number selector’ but it’s so much fun playing Mrs Santa Claus that I thought I’d share it around. As you know, studies have proven that giving is good for your health.
Here’s what she said about choosing the winners ‘Picking them was harder than I thought! I wish I could give one to them all because the comments were so great and some were really funny.’

AlzheimersNotes.com

Among the movies shown for entertainment at nursing homes (or in your home), have these included any starring Paul Newman? Will Alzheimer’s residents, if they comprehend the news on television, realize he passed away of cancer?
When my mom resided in a nursing home, I often visited to find the residents watching movies. They might not be entirely cognisant of the story line, but they sometimes did recognize the actors and mention their names.
(Incidentally, in one report about Paul Newman’s retirement from acting in 2007, it said he supposedly mentioned memory difficulty as one of the reasons. No one has implied he had dementia or Alzheimer’s, but decreasing memory from other causes can result in changes in one’s life.)

Why Food Matters? A Review of Food Matters Documentary.

Food matters. We all know that.
But do we really know how much food matters to our health and wellbeing?
That seems to be the central question that Food Matters, a fascinating and riveting documentary, asks. This 80 minute documentary brings together the thoughts and opinions of some of the world’s leaders in nutrition and natural healing.
It argues that we live in a world of failing health care systems, where the focus is on symptoms of disease rather that the causes of disease. It’s a world where we are constantly being told that there is a ‘pill for every ill’. And along the way, somehow, the use of nutrition as a cure or preventative solution has gotten lost.
Whatever happened, the documentary asks, to the belief held by Hippocrates, father of medicine, t...

Nintendo and Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation have been partners for more than 15 years, bringing Fun Center mobile entertainment units to children staying in hospitals. Recently they introduced a completely new Fun Center, based around Nintendo Wii, which can be rolled right up to the side of patient’s beds or anywhere in a hospital setting.
A Fun Center is a mobile entertainment unit containing a flat-screen television, DVD player, and Nintendo Wii™ system. Whether hospitalized children are nervously awaiting surgery, sitting restlessly during a long treatment, or feeling lonely in their hospital room, the Fun Center helps them cope by providing endless hours of fun and distraction. To date, more than 5,000 Fun Centers have been sponsored by companies, foundatio...

Healthbolt Giveaway: Win a DVD of the Food Matters Documentary.

Have you heard of the Food Matters documentary?
It’s been called the ‘food equivalent’ of The Inconvenient Truth.
This independently funded film looks at the trillion dollar worldwide ’sickness industry’ and ask why ‘despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic ills and every day maladies.’
Food Matters wants us to think about what we are putting into our bodies and why. Interviews with well known leaders in nutrition and natural healing address the idea that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of nutrition - foods, supplements and detoxification - should be considered in the treatment of chronic illnesses.
So far, I&#821...

After doing the rounds, getting necessary documents for my job application, I went to SM Marilao to have early dinner with parents and watch the much-awaited The Dark Knight movie (perhaps I’ll be posting a review when most people have already seen the film. Ehehe). Then I’ve decided to linger for a bit more, not wanting to go home just yet, when I saw that AstroVision and Video City have DVDs on sale. I went in and found these gems (see picture on the left). And goodness, finally I’ve got The Wedding Singer! I’ve been looking for the original DVD for years but it seemed that I had a curse and that I’ll only find it once I’ve watched all Adam Sandler movies (which fortunately, isn’t true, as I’ve found the DVD tonight! Yey!). Me...

It’s been noted that some autistic children can sing before they can talk. My son Charlie was taught to say sounds and then words starting from when he was three and, while he’s always hummed and responded to music, it was a few more years before he started to sing short melodies and bits of tunes. Today, he tends to speak in phrases of a two to five words, often without verbs and other connecting words. He does add these in if we prompt him.
In the past year, we’ve noted that Charlie can sing longer phrases and sentences than he speaks with. He can sings back a song minutes after hearing it on the radio, and sometimes keeps singing it for the rest of the day. (And Charlie has learned to read music with more ease than words.) An article in the April 22nd New York Times ab...

So ob1 is raving about Apple again, specifically how much of a pleasure it is to use the Apple store.
My latest Mac win is another piece of great software I downloaded last night. After the fire the other day (which actually didn’t even come close to threatening our home - my brother’s house was much closer to his fire) I got to thinking a little bit about insurance and replacing all our stuff if it was lost. Aside from the fact that the insurance probably wouldn’t come close to covering it all, I was reminded of the need to keep track of things - specifically all my books, CDs, DVDs etc. Well books are already taken care of by my online catalog at LibraryThing (which I have recommended a number of times already - awsome site). Unfortunately I couldn’t find any comp...

The Battle Continues… HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

DreamWorks, Paramount drop Blu-ray - Home Entertainment Articles | Digital Life
I’ve been prevaricating on this issue for some time, especially since Blu-Ray were seeming to be getting the upper hand in the HD DVD format war, but now major studios Dreamworks and Paramount have declared they will be releasing their movies exclusively on HD-DVD from now on. So for movies like Shrek The Third, this will be the only format. I still think the battle is far from over, but it’s about time for me to dip my feet in, especially since the cheapest of all HD options is an add-on drive for the Xbox-360 at less than $200. Actually there’s a bit of a groundswell behind Xbox now - they’ve lowered their prices, added HDMI in the newest consoles, have MSN support now, and have some g...
