At the beginning of the last century, Dr. Wilhelm Fliess noticed identical rhythms in the case histories of his patients. He observed active and passive phases in the physical, emotional and mental aspects of humans. From these observations he derived the principle of the biorhythms: The physical curve with its cycle of 23 days, the emotional curve with 28 days and the mental curve with 33 days.

The objectives of this study was to identify queries that are likely to retrieve relevant articles by relating PubMed search techniques and tools to the number of articles retrieved and the selection of articles for further reading. Authors again observed specialists and residents in internal medicine department. They conclude that queries sent to PubMed by physicians during daily medical care contain fewer than three terms. Queries using four to five terms, retrieving less than 161 article titles, are most likely to result in abstract viewing. PubMed search tools are used infrequently by our population and are less effective than the use of four or five terms.

Thanks to Heather Johnson for this excellent guest post on how to bring IT into the classroom.
Web 2.0 has created many opportunities in all different kinds of fields since its inception within the past decade. The educational field has not been dismissed from the phenomena as there are many creative ways that educators can incorporate the capabilities of Web 2.0 in their lesson plans. While this may seem new to many teachers out there because it is, there are many ways that a student’s learning experience can be improved through Web 2.0. Here are a few examples of how this emerging industry can help educators in the classroom by making learning interactive and fun:
1.	Set up a blog for your class. If you create a blog for your individual classes your students can have a forum where they...

URL: http://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp?language=englishHello all, and welcome to my first posting here at PsychSplash! I hope to continue on the road that Dr. Gareth paved so well. My first inclusion in to the land of PsychSplash involves Human Research Subjects Training. As a Ph.D. Student who is almost finished with his proposal, I am working on the IRB as well, and this can be a daunting task sometimes to keep the principles of the human research participant combined with my own wanting to get the proposal done. To that end, I have found in my research the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, which helps keeps participants up-to-date on IRB and research training.

No! It’s your psychology blog!
Now I’m back from the ATP Conference and recovered it’s time to announce our new project which actually formed the basis of one of the workshops we did. Also, a big hi to all those who saw me at the conference and commented on our work on-line. Thanks :)
For the past few weeks we’ve (Mark and I) have been working on a new project. Over the last year we’ve both got into blogging in a really big way - my with PsychBLOG and Mark’s PsychNews and we’ve really seen how blogging is an excellent educational tool that everyone should be able to get too.
So … this got us thinking - how could we help all you avid readers get your psychology blog off the ground. We’ve come up with Psylent.co.uk.

As European clinicians are finding it more and more challenging to attend
traditional CME –accredited activities due to time constraints, budget and
location of activities, e-learning courses have begun to show their potential
as an effective tool to aid in teaching and learning in continuing medical
education. But, what is e-learning? Are there real advantages? And, can
e-learning courses produce real outcomes?
What is E-Learning?
e-learning = enhanced Learning
E-learning has always been defined as electronic learning but today is no
longer simply associated with distance or remote learning, rather, it forms
part of a conscious choice of the best and most appropriate ways of promoting
effective learning.
Today, e-learning has more appropriately been defined as ‘learning

e-CME: online medical education in Europe

LMS group is very interested in the future of e-cme or online medical
education in Europe. These new media are referred to as “e-CME” and “e-CPD”,
and should be taken as covering the delivery of CME/CPD by methods including:
recorded audio, recorded visual, recorded on Compact Disc (CD), recorded on
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), available on Personal Digital Assistant (PDA),
available online via an educational website, or any mixture of the preceding.
In Europe there is still a long way to go before national bodies recognise
online CME as accreditable. Most national societies focus on live CME and one
can wonder, when will online medical education truly become an issue? (Source: LMS Group Blog)

The conference, this year titled ‘the wonder of psychology: inspiring teachers and learners‘, is being held between the 10th and 12th July 2008 and is for teachers of psychology offering updating sessions on psychology, presentations and workshops on teaching and learning, and opportunities to share good practice.
There’s an impressive lineup of fantastic Key note speakers, those giving workshops and stalls of people giving away loads of free stuff (well that’s what I’ve been told at least). Mar...

A big thanks to Jamie Davies for this impressive set of Psychology links. I came across Jamie and his sites when he linked to my post on the In Mind Social Psychology Magazine. Jamie is a teacher at a Sixth Form College in the UK and is involved in teaching the OCR A-Level Psychology course. OCR is one of the three biggest exam boards in the UK offering a wide range of qualifications and support to UK education providers (schools, prisons, colleges, the police force and other workplaces). The A-level Psychology course is a two-year introductory psychology course that prepares students (mostly 16-18 yo) for further University level courses. Jamie informed me that there are about 10,000 students studying the course at any one time. In terms of the content of the course:

s4Potential creates and markets web-based cognitive behavioural therapy programs for correctional, health, social service and corporate organizations. Their product line includes programs for anger management, substance abuse and autism, with more products in the pipeline. In addition to the e-learning programs, s4 provide training in a cognitive- behavioural group program on anger management called CALM (available, I am guessing to people in Ontario, Canada where s4 is located). Visitors to the site can view a range of demos of the different ways that s4 have combined e-learning with CBT.
