“Just as an untamed elephant can do damage, trampling crops and injuring people, so the untamed, capricious mind can cause harm to us and those around us.”
So writes Jan Chozen Bays, M.D., a physician and Zen teacher, in her book How to Train a Wild Elephant & Other Adventures in Mindfulness: Simple Daily Mindfulness Practices for Living Life More Fully & Joyfully.
How often have you let negative thoughts run your life? Let a punitive perspective take over so you end up beating yourself up for the smallest of supposed offenses? Or just experienced the days like you’re listing through a boring book, going through the motions but skimming the significant stuff?

Something that can help is mindfulness. According to Chozen Bays, “Mindfulness unifies our body, heart and mind, br...

– Earth Alerts is a Windows-based application that allows you to keep a weather eye on natural disasters as they occur across the globe. Alert notifications, reports, and imagery gleaned from National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey and Smithsonian Institution and elsewhere as they happen and before the media even know about them, give you a convenient way to view natural phenomenon as they occur. The app has been around for some time, but more recently they have developed a Google Maps version, which is currently in beta – http://earthalerts.manyjourneys.com/web/

Genetically altered foods are something I've heard a lot about, but not taken as seriously as I should. For me, there is nothing like taking time to look into something in order to write about it to open my eyes to things I haven't seen before. And that's just what happened to me this week. I am still learning how best to put into scientific words what all of this is about, but generally, it is altering the characteristics of an organism by injecting it's DNA with genes or other properties(?) from another organism. This tampering with the natural structure of, for example, corn or soy beans, common foods that are altered in this way, is naturally of concern to those of us who want to eat foods as close to the way God created them as we can in our tainted environment. I went into greater de...

Do you feel it in the air? It’s change.
Every season has an end. And with any end comes fear, uncertainty and sometimes sadness.
Even if ends bring new beginnings like a marriage, a baby or a new career, the loss of what we know can feel earth shattering. Instead of embracing change, we grasp on, holding desperately to what was instead of what will be.
Does that sound like you?
How are you continuing to do things that don’t serve you or your new life out of fear of change? Maybe you need to take the time to grieve for your old self and your old life so that you can embrace your new one.
It’s something important to contemplate this week as we get closer to summer. It also fits with one of our posts on transitions.
Have a great week and enjoy!

On Earth Day, which was marked recently on April 22, 2011, we generally tend to focus on the impact of people on the planet. But it is equally important to consider the impact of pollution on people and health including non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
NCDs, which include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers and chronic lung disease, are gaining much-needed attention this year in advance of the upcoming pivotal UN High-level Meeting on NCDs on September 19-20. NCDs – yes, the word is hard to pronounce and doesn’t quite roll off our tongues easily, but I am sure HIV/AIDS was quite a mouthful too in the early years – cau...

So, it’s Earth Week. But who really cares? Anybody? This year, Earth Week directly coincides with both Easter and Passover. So essentially, it’s a battle: Mother Nature vs. Jesus vs. the Ancient Israelites. Not to take anything away from dear Mother Earth, but for the record, my money is not on her to win this fight this week. Not with that kind of fiercely religious competition in the ring.
In case you weren’t aware, it’s actually been Earth Month for all of April. (And this Friday, April 22 is Earth Day.) But what does that really mean, other than that the requisite annual events, parades, activities, fairs, and open houses (that mostly serve to create more trash) are held around the world? Well, it means that for one day, one week, or one month, people talk more ...

Last year, James Dunbar researched and wrote a scientifically accurate, rhyming comic book about the origin of the universe. This year, he’s back with part 2 of the trilogy:
“It’s Alive! The Universe Verse: Book 2″
Dunbar’s new tome, available digitally or in paper tells the story of life on Earth and its likely origins from non-living chemicals. It covers the formation of the solar system, Earth’s early history, the fundamental principles of evolution and natural selection and the basic structures and systems of life as we know it. It’s (w)rapped up in a well-written rhyme and reason full-colour illustrated book. Dunbar covered the various costs by crowd-sourcing funds using Kickstarter. You can preview the book on his website, order the $15.95 p...

In the United States and in countries around the world, Earth Day is a time when adults and children alike honor the planet by learning what they can do to protect and clean up the environment, raise awareness about environmental health issues, and gather public support for positive change.
There are many ways in which you can get involved in your own community. FIrst and foremost, Practicing the 4 Rs whenever possible: reduce, recycle, and re-buy and reuse.
And speaking of reusing, consider banking your baby’s cord blood for use at a later time if necessary. Cord blood is the blood left over in your baby’s umbilical cord immediately after birth. Your practitioner harvests the blood in a quick, easy, and painless procedure. In a peculiar set of responses to inquiries about Libya, the Obama administration makes "kinetic military action" against the English language.
Full or substantial government health insurance makes for an inefficient and expensive health care system.

As long as big ticket items continue to make the cut, our fiscal house will remain in disarray.

I love what you have been sharing on our Facebook page recently. Reading about the things you love about your uniqueness has been very inspiring. (If you missed it, catch up here.)
Some days it’s hard to love ourselves-the quirky things we say, our crooked smile, or how we need to be around people as much as we need to get away from them. The funny thing is that what makes us different is often what makes us so lovable. Simply because there is no single person on this earth like you. When you think about it, isn’t that pretty cool?
In the world we live in, it is sometimes hard to love our unusual parts, the things that make us stand out from the crowd. But your uniqueness (the way you write, speak, walk and how you just are) is really a fingerprint, a distinct and permanent imp...

Mrs. Happy and I just returned from Disney World for our Happy family vacation. (It was either that or a Parkinson’s Cruise.) While at Disney’s Epcot Center, Mama and Papa Happy discovered what the future of healthcare in America will look like, and it has nothing to do with insurance.
You’ve all seen that giant Epcot ball. Inside that ball is a slow-moving ride that takes you through thousands of years of history. At the end you choose your own future. I present to you this video showing the future of healthcare in America, courtesy of the Epcot Spaceship Earth and Mama and Papa Happy:

A couple words of mention. They still think there will be doctors in the future, unless their reference to doctors was reference to future nurse practitioners known as Dr. Nurse. That...

How would you feel if I were to tell you that there are many children suffering in the world today? How about if I were more specific and told you that over 30,000 children under age 5 are suffering from hunger and preventable diseases? Does this resonate within the depths of your heart?
Sweet, innocent babies die every day from a preventable disease in an indigenous country. That number could be considered huge by some, or perhaps quite small, depending on your perspective. If you are referring to population size, however, that is the size of a small city. In regard to time, 30,000 seconds is actually only a little over eight hours. Or 30,000 children could be like 30 large elementary schools disappearing from the face of the earth on Monday … and again on Tuesday … and so on.

Do you remember the first time you began thinking about yourself as your own person, separate from mom and dad?
I think for me it began when I was a child and saw that I could choose what I wanted to wear for school, what I wanted to eat and what I liked to do. But not only that. My tastes, sense of style and opinions were different too.
Yet, this sense of, “Who am I?” definitely did not stop as a child. It grew in my twenties and continues to grow for me as an adult.
The more I am able to step out of my family’s shoes and develop my own sense of me, the further along the path I walk toward authenticity and self-identity. It’s a road less traveled especially if you come from a family-centered culture like mine.
If you are an artist, writer or any creative person, th...

James C. Tilton, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, for some years now has been working on new image enhancement software to help automatically analyze satellite data of the Earth. Hierarchical Segmentation Software (HSEG), as the tool is called, identifies relatively homogeneous areas of an image and highlights them.
Our eyes and brains are pretty good at image analysis, but large dense maps can be quite a challenge. Although originally designed for aerial cartography, the first commercial use of the software came in the form of a mammogram enhancement and analysis system.
The lakes of northern Wisconsin (top) are very much like dense breast tissue (side) to a NASA scientist it turns out, and porting over the code and optimizing it led to the MED-SEG™ system from B...

A recent blog entry by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist, recently came across my desk that made the outrageous claim that one cannot chose one’s religion. If one’s family is a Muslim, you will be too, no matter what you actually practice — genetically speaking.
He relates this piece of news by suggesting that Obama cannot choose to be a Christian, because his family was a Muslim. He suggests that, genetically, Obama is a Muslim no matter what he practices.
If this doesn’t pass the basic logic smell test for you, then you’re not alone.
Like other world religions, Islam not only is a religion but also comprises largely endogamous ethnic groups. When a group of individuals remain largely or entirely endogamous (marry only other members of the group ...

Next in our series of posts about our founder Doc Tom. Previous time capsules: 1980 and 1985.
Come, ye economics buffs and algebra fans: Get out your pencils and solve for x, n, and XX:
Whatever else the year 19XX is remembered for, it will — without a doubt — go down in history as a record year for medical expenses here in the United States. All indications are that before the calendar year is out, Americans will have spent $x (n% of the Gross National Product) on drugs, X-rays, surgery, physicians’ fees, laboratory tests, hospital overhead, health insurance, etc. That’s up from the [$0.3x] ([.7n%] of GNP) just 13 years ago.
Clearly, the medical establishment has become a threat to the average American’s budget (if not his health).
Ready? That was…1978. Check the tiny numb...

It would be way more fun if the moon were filled with cheese, but it actually contains water. And not just a little trickle, either – all the water in the moon’s interior could create a one-yard-deep ocean covering its entire surface. The perfect depth for a nice little moonlight swim in the lunar sea.
Not impressed? This is 100 times the amount of water that researchers previously thought was on the moon. But if we plan on surfing up there in the future, NASA will need to design sleeker space suits. The current ones look kinda bulky.

Composting is something every good eco-conscious woman knows she should do, but somehow finds a reason not to. It’s gross, you say. I live in a city, you sigh. The time for excuses is over. Thanks to Planet Green, there’s the City Girl’s Guide to Composting – but don’t worry, it works for non-urban types, too.
First you need to decide what kind of composting you want to do. Worm composting is good if you’re short on space (and don’t mind worms, obviously); hot composting is good if you’re a real go-getter and are willing to put a little more work into composting while reaping a more satisfying reward; and cold composting is good if you’d like a low-maintenance approach. You just dump the scraps into a bucket and let them s...

Our May Science Café (description below) will be held on Tuesday 5/18 at Tir Na Nog on S. Blount Street. This year there has been an incredible amount of geologic activity around the world. During this cafe we will be talking about volcanoes and earthquakes and how these and other forces have shaped North Carolina. Our café speaker for the evening will be Dr. Kevin Stewart from the Geology Department at UNC. It should be an interesting evening for all of us to learn more about the earth, how it changes, and how those changes can affect our present world. Dr. Stewart will have some of his books on hand for those who may be interested in getting a copy.

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and the same is true for your old split ends: Human hair and pet hair are being used to clean up and contain the BP oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico, and you can send in your unwanted hair to help out.
A Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based organization, is collecting human and pet hair clippings from individuals, salons, and professionals to use in their hair-filled buoys (pictured above), which apparently will soak up the toxic oil. We’re slightly skeeved by the hair sausage imagery, but cleaning up the Gulf is probably worth dealing with our gag reflex for a few moments.
Donating is easy: Just go to their website, tell them you’d like to donate, and they’ll email you the address of th...

Sheesh. We thought we were being all eco-sensitive on Earth Day by bringing a reusable coffee holder to work, drinking tap water, and taking out the recycling. But check out how these rock star mountaineers spent their Earth Week: According to Reuters, 20 Nepali alpinists scaled Mount Everest a whopping 26,246 feet to an area called the “dead zone”, because it’s freezing, icy, and scary. Oh, and there’s no f.ing oxygen. The point of Extreme Everest Expedition 2010 is to clean up trash and detritus that past climbers have left behind. (In some cases, actual climbers have been left behind, which makes the whole process even more challenging.)
Wow can this week really be over?! Perhaps it was all of the celebrations that took place this week that made it go by in a flash. If you haven’t already heard, it was our birthday over here at Psych Central. Can you believe it’s been fifteen years since we began? Thanks to all of you who have sent a ton of b-day wishes on Twitter, Facebook and on our blogs! We really couldn’t have made it this far without you!
And if that wasn’t enough, it was Earth Day yesterday. What did you do to celebrate? One fan on Facebook got creative by donating money, picking up trash and getting some exercise at the same time! Speaking of which, scroll down to the first post and see how you can keep the celebration going.
Here are the posts that made it to the best of our blogs this week...

The Earth Day Ask: Would You Live In a Yurt?

If you’ve ever yearned for a yurt, The New York Times just published a piece about a woman in New York state who lives in one with her three-year-old daughter. Sure, it looks cool and sophisticated, has a woodstove, and sits on 18 acres of land surrounded by waterfalls and conifers, but hell, it’s still a yurt. Because it’s Earth Day, Blisstree wants to know: How far would you go, how much would you change in order to cut down on consumerism, simplify your life, and get back to nature? If you’re more “weekend camping trip with cocktails” than you are “sell your belongings and live in a cabin with no running water or electricity” (or anything in between), we want to know. Get share-y and earthy with us in the comments section, below.

By Jerry TaylorA conversation with documentarian Robert Stone regarding Earth Day is featured today in The New York Times’s “Dot Earth” online column. In the course of his conversation with the Times’s Andrew Revkin, Mr. Stone — who is quite alarmed about our reliance on foreign oil — asks: “How many Americans know that we send about $800 billion to the Middle East every year for oil?”
Hopefully, not many. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. spent $95.4 billion on crude oil imports from OPEC sources in 2009. But not all OPEC members are from the Middle East. That $95.4 billion includes dollars spent on oil originating from Algeria ($6.3 billion), Angola ($9 billion), Ecuador ($3.4 billion), Nigeria ($17.7 billion), an...

By Chris MoodyToday is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a time to highlight and discuss ways to work toward a cleaner planet. Cato’s energy and environment research promotes policies that would help protect the environment without sacrificing economic liberty, goals that are mutually supporting, not mutually exclusive.

Why we should thank capitalism for environmental gains: “It is businessmen — not bureaucrats or environmental activists — who deserve most of the credit for the environmental gains over the past century and who represent the best hope for a Greener tomorrow.”

Finding the right balance: “Today, America’s environment is cleaner—and Earth Day has indeed helped ensure that. …We should renew our promise to keep the environment clean...

James Cameron to Release Avatar DVD on Earth Day

It’s pretty tough to miss the pro-environmentalism theme in Avatar. The revered Tree of Souls, the fight to save the Na’vi woodlands from being destroyed in the name of greed, the general respect and love that the Na’vi have for their natural surroundings — writer-director James Cameron isn’t exactly coy with his messaging.
Continuing with this trend, Cameron is releasing the Avatar DVD on Earth Day, April 22. An out-and-proud environmentalist, Cameron told Katherine Monk of The Montreal Gazette that he knows one movie won’t altogether save the earth, but “if people are thinking and talking about it, and are emotionally open to it, that’s the point at which you can ask people to introduce change into their lives and the way they do things.”

We don’t need environmental experts to tell us that many store-bought cleaning products contain harmful chemicals and pose risks to both our health and the earth. Just take one whiff of most products and the harsh components set the nostrils burning.
Luckily, there are far milder and less destructive cleaning substances we can concoct ourselves (and thus know exactly what’s going into them), because the ingredients are most likely lying around your house. Check out these 10 cleaning tips that use common household items, and how they can help clean up your act:

Linoleum floors: Mix white vinegar (or lemon juice) with water and a little bit of liquid soap to create an effective floor cleaner.

While we mortals are busy doing our part this Earth Day, nature will be putting on a performance for us in the night sky, perhaps as a reminder of what all this Earth Day stuff is for. The annual Lyrid meteor shower will reach its peak on April 22 – when we’re all feeling our earthiest. (Opening night was April 16 and the free show will close on April 25.) Astronomer Anthony Cook told National Geographic that an average Lyrid meteor shower “produces between 10 and 20 meteors per hour, but occasionally these rates increase to 90 per hour.”
So when and where can we catch a glimpse of the Lyrids? Cook advises watching “around the time of moonset (April 22 between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., local time) and dawn.” The Lyrids will be more visible in the Northern Hemispher...

You say you’re an environmentalist. You use cloth bags when grocery shopping; your house is fitted with CFL light bulbs; and you drive a hybrid. (Hopefully not a Prius, though.)
But if you really want to get your hands dirty for the sake of saving the planet, here are 10 ways you can use Earth Week as an excuse to get active in your community.
If none of these opportunities are near where you live, check out Serve.org or Volunteermatch.org to find a worthy cause nearby.

One really cool thing we like, from Blisstree to you:
5% of proceeds from these special edition KOR ONE hydration vessels are donated to charities supporting water causes
KOR ONE Hydration Vessels
Earth Week has us thinking green, and these KOR ONE hydration vessels (we like to call them water bottles) are one of the most eco-friendly ways we’ve seen to stay hydrated. They hold up to 750 mL (25 ounces), and are made from BPA-free Tritan – a material that doesn’t retain flavor or give your water a metallic or plastic-y aftertaste. The wide openings are big enough to fit ice cubes, and the hinged cap has a separate place where you can insert “KOR stones” – small inspirational notes.
But we really love KOR because they give back a portion of their proceeds to envir...

Earth Week Controversy: Disposable or Cloth Diapers?

Disposable diapers have been popular with moms and dads since the early 1960s. These days, however, with more and more people going “green,” cloth diapers may be the right choice for you and your baby. But even though it’s Earth Week, there are pros and cons to both disposable and cloth varieties:
Image: istockphoto
Disposable Diaper Pros

Easy to use – no pins or fuss
No washing – just throw them away
Less leakage – snug and absorbent

Disposable Diaper Cons

More expensive than cloth
Bad for the environment
Harder to potty-train – babies can’t feel the wetness

Cloth Diaper Pros

Kinder to the environment
Less diaper rash than with disposables
Much cheaper – after the initial cost, you can use them for years on subsequent kids
Cloth-diapered children ...

It will be Earth Day in a few days. How will you celebrate? I caught the last half of Nostradamus 2012 on the The History Channel this weekend and was temporarily freaked out. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready for the world to end in a few years. This Earth Day, you’ll find me recycling paper, reusing old bottles and even unplugging my laptop so that I can relax and reboot by spending more time with Mother Nature. After all, it’s also almost Mother’s Day (May 9th, in case you were wondering).
Besides scaring me to be more environmentally-friendly, the show also got me thinking about the importance of appreciating the now and planning for the future; two concepts you’ll see intertwined in this week’s round up. However you celebrate the day, ...

If you’re not already reconsidering your waste habits for Earth Week, this may make you rethink your plastic bag, soda bottle, or styrofoam cup:

Nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and OCEANS boldly chronicles the mysteries that lie beneath. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud dive deep into the very waters that sustain all of mankind – exploring the harsh reality and the amazing creatures that live within. No need for Windex or other chemical cleaners. Add three tablespoons of vinegar to one gallon of cool water to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Get a streak-free shine by using newspaper instead of paper towels.

We are such spendthrifts with our lives, the trick of living is to slip on and off the planet with the least fuss you can muster. I’m not running for sainthood. I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer, who puts back into the soil what he takes out.

"Sarah Palin's Alaska", set to air on TLC, is getting lots of attention, but not in a good way.
Remember “Drill, Baby, Drill!”? We’re guessing that The Discovery Network (which owns TLC, Planet Green, and the Discovery Channel) would like you to forget about it, given its recent $2 million contract with Alaska’s former Governor Sarah Palin. The rogue politician will host a reality TV series, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, about her home state, but it’s stirring up considerable controversy among animal rights and environmental groups.
Many activists disapprove of Palin, who is well-known for her pro-oil-drilling slogans and staunch support of aerial wolf hunting, being featured on a network known for health, wellness, and nature programming.

On April 22, that’s just a few days away, tree huggers and vegans will celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day. Even dentists have hopped on the clean green machine. From the Emerald Coast to Greenland, your colleagues are practicing eco-friendly dentistry. Some have designed office interiors with air filtration systems, natural lighting, bamboo flooring, and latex-free paint. Extreme green dentists hire architects to design offices that minimize electricity usage and recycle rainwater for landscape irrigation.
Don’t be envious or jaded, just get on board. For the average Dr. Joe, going green doesn’t have to involve redecorating or rebuilding. And contrary to a popular frog’s beliefs, it IS easy being green. Here are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day this year:

It’s a brand new week. Glad you made it! April’s a pretty hectic month, but we’re nearly halfway through. You’ve already gotten through April Fool’s Day, hopefully your taxes are finally done, spring break’s about over and well Earth Day is still to come. For me, getting a little R&R means sitting down in a cafe and reading various chapters in my ever-growing stack of books. My shelf contains every subject including memoirs and psychology books. There’s a handful of fresh reads as well as a number of good old favorites. Our guest in this Science Forum is economist Scott Barrett of Columbia University's Earth Institute. Chat with Barrett about the science and politics of geoengineering, the emerging field of science aimed at cooling the planet.

Barrett is an expert on international environmental agreements. He is currently studying the politics and economics of geoengineering. He says countries are more likely to geoengineer climate than reduce their carbon emissions. Read his paper on The Incredible Economics of Geoengineering.

Barrett is the author of Environment and Statecraft: The Strategy of Environmental Treaty-Making. (Here's a review of the book.) Barrett also blogs for Yale Global Online.

I will admit I am reality TV show junkie. As I type this, I’m watching an episode of MTV’s “True Life” while anxiously awaiting the season finale of Bravo’s “Kell on Earth.” Due to my obsession with – er, interest in – this influential genre, I keep up with the happenings of its stars (purely for research purposes, of course).
After making a tiny ripple in the reality TV pond with her appearance on MTV’s “Laguna Beach,” Heidi Montag moved on to “The Hills.” And while The Montag’s fame has waxed and waned, she has found inventive ways to keep her irrelevance surprisingly relevant.
There have been many media manifestations of Montag and her husband, Spencer Pratt (j...

One easy thing you can do today for your health and the environment (or, idle slobs, take action!):

Power down the tap while you brush your teeth.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American faucet gushes two gallons of water per minute. Turning it off for four minutes a day while you brush your teeth saves around 240 gallons of water per month. Or, think of it like this – the EPA claims that letting your faucet run for five minutes is the equivalent of leaving a 60-watt light bulb on for 14 hours.
So if you’re not rinsing, turn off the tap. Not only are you giving mother earth a hand by saving all that water, but you’re also doing your utility bill a favor. If you have a spouse or kids or roommates, post a kind reminder on the bathroom mirror – ...

Turn your lights down low tomorrow night, for Earth Hour. A World Wildlife Fund initiative, the goal is to get everyone to shut off their lights at 8:30 p.m. local time, as a statement of support for action against climate change. Global supporters include 56 U.S. states and territories, and celebrity supporters Edward Norton, Steve Nash, Gisele Bundchen, and Tom Brady – last year even the Las Vegas Strip went black. Sign up for Earth Hour, convince your husband it’s romantic, and power down.

Today’s challenge is enough; the next flight of stairs, that next load of laundry or the next weed that needs pulling is all you need to be concerned with, for now.
Did you know you can wash one window at a time?
Simple foods can sustain you as readily as complicated dishes; such as veggies, fresh fruit, yogurt and a can of soup. Frozen dinners are often healthy, tasty and convenient.
It’s easier, safer and wiser to fill your refrigerator with fresh food than to go out for fast food that is fraught with fat and needless calories. Keep food simple.
It’s okay to sit or lie down and rest after any chore. It’s legal, wise and renewing. The “goof off” police will not show up at your door.
Laughter and humor feel like sunshine on a cold, damp day.
Laughter is allowed even when yo...

“I don’t look good on television. And I make no effort to look good, either.”
Hmmm. How many times have you justified feeling dumpy with the same logic that Kelly Cutrone used on this week’s latest episode of Bravo’s “Kell on Earth”? Cutrone’s tough-girl act is all bravado, but we’re not sure if we buy it. Is this rationalization just a cover-up for low self esteem? Tell us what you think. (And if you have to cry, go outside.)

Why would a woman stay in a relationship with a guy who puts her down, hems her in, and perhaps even physically abuses her? Why would a woman hold down two jobs to keep the rent paid and food on the table while her boyfriend sits around smoking weed all day? Why oh why would a woman allow herself to be emotionally blackmailed by her boyfriend’s threats that he will kill himself or her or both if she even talks about leaving a relationship that is going nowhere?
There’s no easy answer. Often it’s a complicated mix of a number of answers. If you wonder why on earth you stay with the guy who keeps hurting you in spite of promises to do better, in spite of protestations that he loves you, in spite of your obvious distress about how things are going, see if you recognize yourself ...

Tomorrow, December 1, is World AIDS Day. Let us remember that HIV/AIDS remains an issue the world over 364 other days of the year.
Promising treatments have extended the survival of people in the wealthiest nations of the world but, where available, are only starting to have an effect in poorer nations.

Time to bring you up to date on the latest science headlines I’ve put together for other sites this last couple of weeks, so here’s a quick round-up:
On the SpectroscopyNOW site, this issue, I covered natural chemicals that can help sunflowers soak up toxic cadmium from the soil (another example of the phytoremediation process I discussed in more detail on Sciencebase.com recently). I also describe a new approach to spectroscopy that could help chemists work out the absolute structure of natural products with medicinal potential.
In the same issue, under the X-ray banner, I explain how US researchers have for the first time homed in on the role of the trace element selenium in male infertility. Their work offers some new clues as to what leads to malformed sperm in some cases.

At a time of economic turmoil and job losses, many people are turning to home business opportunities. But here’s one I bet you’ve never thought about – sex toy parties.
Environmentally friendly ‘adult toys’ are being taken out of the bedroom and into the living room by a Northwest-based retailer who has launched Earth Erotic Parties.
Aimed at putting a sustainable twist on the more traditional sex toy parties, the Earth Erotic parties will showcase green vibrators, phthalate-free dildos, natural lubricants, recycled whips and all sorts of other ecologically and non toxic adult paraphernalia.
Sounds like a company that’s taking ‘doing it green’ to a whole new level.
Interested? Then sneak in and check out this ‘earth erotic party’ video over at Planet G...

10 Years Ago on Psych Central

Moving On
Ten years ago, I resigned from my position at the large mental health site I co-founded in 1995 (not this one!), and took up with drkoop.com, an e-health site founded by the former Surgeon General of the U.S., to help them build their mental health content. This was my first big startup experience, and I couldn’t have picked a better company to watch implode shortly after its IPO. I also moved from Columbus, Ohio to Austin, Texas, a big geographic and cultural change. Austin, Texas remains one of my favorite towns to visit, though, as it’s pretty much the antithesis of C...

From Sigma Xi:

Greetings everyone. Here's hoping that summer treated you kindly and that you are ready to dive back into American Scientist magazine's annual Pizza Lunch speaker series. We begin this year at noon, Thursday, Sept. 24 at Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society here in Research Triangle Park.

Come hear UNC-Chapel Hill chemist Thomas J. Meyer discuss efforts to develop alternative energy sources that are safer than greenhouse gas emitting fuels. Meyer leads a new research center that this year landed $17.8 million in federal funding to try to develop solar fuels and next-generation photovoltaic technology. The center's vision is that solar fuels one day could use the sun's energy to make fuels from water and carbon dioxide for heating, transportation and energy storage. Th...

Not twittering yet? Wow, you are so yesterday, last week, a part of the LiveJournal or Yahoo! crowd. C’mon, get with the program and start laying out your interesting, exciting life, one 140-character chunk at a time!
After all, Shakespeare didn’t limit himself to just one 140 character play. In fact, I’m not sure what Shakespeare would make of twitter. Indeed, I don’t think you’ll find anything approaching Shakespeare’s quality in the microblogging service of twitter.
Instead, what you will find is exactly what you would’ve found about 8 years ago when blogging became all the rage, and everyone decided to start one (only to abandon it 3 weeks later for lack of anything interesting to say). Thankfully, twitter to the rescue! I mean, if you can&#8...

The next time you watch the weather forecast, notice the barometric pressure, measured in inches. Numbers such as 30.04 will be followed by “rising,” “falling,” or “steady.” Typically, when a low pressure front is coming (and they do, all the time) it signals not only a change in the weather, but a drop in the barometric pressure, which is pressure against the Earth’s atmosphere. Remember when Grandma would say, “Rain’s coming, and I can feel it in my joints?” She actually knew this because of what happens to our bodies when the barometric pressure changes.
That means that the pressure against your body drops as well, and your joints and areas that are injured can begin to swell. This swelling causes increased inflammation, and we require hormones to deal with this incr...

New Republic editor John Judis has a couple of insights about the Obama administration’s economic and social goals. He points out that, for more than a century, Progressive and free-market forces have gone through cycles of “reform and reaction.”
The Progressives — who my friend John Baden calls the “American counterrevolutionaries” — have repeatedly sought to increase the size and scope of government: railroad regulation, public land agencies, and the income tax in the 1900s; Social Security, low-interest home loans, and government ownership of power plants in the 1930s; Medicare, the war on poverty, and environmental laws in the 1960s.
In between, friends of free markets tried to roll back those reforms, but were never completely successful. Thus, each...

In honor of Earth Day, which was April 22, I’ve been writing this week about things you can do to improve both your health and the health of the environment. On Tuesday, I wrote about changing your diet in an earth-friendly manner, and today I’d like to talk about another activity that would be good for you and good for the environment; namely, walking more and driving less. You can also substitute bicycle riding for driving, but walking is easier and needs no equipment.
Countless studies have proven the health benefits of walking, and less driving is obviously beneficial both from reduced energy consumption and lower production of pollutants such as greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. Walking has been shown repeatedly to be an excellent form of exercise, espe...

In another sign that the Department of Agriculture is embracing sustainable food, the agency today will unveil expanded plans for a People’s Garden that will include the entire six-acre grounds of the Whitten Building, the department’s neoclassic marble headquarters on the Mall.

As usual, I find myself the skunk at the party. As the world celebrates Earth Day, that term has become a bit ominous. Environmentalism is devolving into an increasingly anti-human movement that could end up costing the human race dearly. I have a piece on the matter in today's NRO called "Homo Sapiens, Get Lost." Here are a few excerpts: Over the last few hundred years in the West, the moral foundations of society were profoundly pro-human. Judeo-Christian moral philosophy and secular humanism both promoted human flourishing and the protection of individual rights as primary purposes of society. But in recent years we have witnessed a rebellion against "human exceptionalism"--the view that ultimate moral value comes with being a member of the human species...Here and abroad, environmental...

First of all, let me wish you a very happy Earth Day. Surely you began your day sipping on shade-grown coffee brewed with rainwater through recycled coffee filters - and you aren’t using a disposable cup, right? Dump those used coffee grounds in your garden! And please excuse me while I hug a tree.
Wait a minute. You don’t have to go overboard to celebrate Earth Day 2009. In fact, your dental office could do a few simple things that will reduce your carbon Sketcher print and make you an eco-friendly business.
Some dentists are “going green” and taking advantage of marketing their practices as eco-frienldy. (See websites and articles below.) Earlier this year, DentalBlogs posted about Generation G - remember? With the current turn in our economy, it’s wis...

Midweek Mental Greening
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.” - John Muir.
It’s Earth Day my friends, and I have 10 ways to celebrate that will help take care of both Mother Nature and your mental wellness.
1. Back away from the treadmill.
Lately, the weather here has been pretty rainy (and even snowy and sleety at times!), so my treadmill has gotten a lot of use. However, it’s warming up now, which means morning walks or jogs – and less electricity – are on the horizon.
2. Break ground on your garden.
April is a big month for turning your vegetable garden plan into a reality. Growing your own veggies is good for your brain, your soul, and the planet.
3. Talk with your ...

Earth Day: Improving the environment and your health

April 22 is celebrated every year as Earth Day and this year I’d like to encourage you to think about changing your diet in ways that would benefit both your health and the health of the environment. And I can think of no better way than to follow the precepts set forth by Michael Pollan, Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and the director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism, and author of the excellent book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, which I highly recommend. Mr. Pollan summarizes his philosophy in seven words:
Eat food
Not too much
Mostly plants
I’ll explain his idea more fully in a minute, but first I’ve got to tell you why you should change your diet. First, we know that four of...

I love it! A cob cottage built sometime in the 1880’s or maybe earlier…

This is south-west of Gore, and I don’t know how old it is, but it’s great example of the cob cottage, built from stone and earth in a simple and timeless design. I think it would have been warm, but not very light inside - and given the winters in Southland, those chimneys would have been well-used.
Don’t you wish the women of that time could have left us some more about their lives and dreams? What would it have been like to leave everything to come out to New Zealand? All the comforts of home left behind to start a new life in a brand new country? And what a country! Nothing like the safe haven of the UK, a much harsher place with none of the history of the Old World. But w...

Earth Hour

Is Earth Hour a great way to raise global awareness of how much energy we are wasting and the possible consequences or our actions? Or, is it simply a cop out so that we can all feel we did "our bit" for the environment without expending any real effort?
With just hours to go for us Brits before we have to switch off the lights, I conducted an ad hoc strawpoll on twitter, here are a few of the early responses.
4KM (Re: more than turning off lights). We’re turning down heat, 100-mile diet today, not driving, planting radishes in organic

Water, Important to Health, Conserve It

I have shared in other posts in this blog the importance of water for the body. God provided water to sustain life, most know that you can live for a lot longer without food than you can without water. My general guideline for water intake is to drink approximately 1/2 your body weight IN OUNCES of water each day. So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 ounces of water each day...a little over 9 8oz. glasses of water. You can take into consideration the other things you drink, juices, etc., but remember that some things, like teas and coffee that contain caffeine act as diuretics and will push the water out of your body before it has time to assimilate, this is also true of Cranberry juice.Water conservation is important everywhere, but in some areas more than others, thinking now of...

July 24, 2008 presentation by Stephen Schneider for the Stanford University Office of Science Outreach's Summer Science Lecture Series.

Professor Schneider discusses the local, regional, and international actions that are already beginning to address global warming and describe other actions that could be taken, if there were political will to substantially reduce the magnitude of the risks.

The Stanford Summer Science Lecture Series is a set of informal lectures about cutting edge research from four of Stanford's most esteemed professors. Read the comments on this post... (Source: A Blog Around The Clock)
