Swearing apparently plays an important role in relieving pain.
The study, published last month in the NeuroReport journal, tested this theory on college students. Students are required to immerse their hands in cold water for as long as they could. While the hands were in the cold water, they were encouraged to either repeat a swear word of their choice or chant a neutral non-swear word.
The students who used sweat words reported less pain during the exercise and were also able to keep their hands in the cold water for at least 40 seconds longer.

            <description>Good news for those of us who discover at the end of a meeting or lecture that our notes are hidden by messy doodles, unintelligible to anyone but ourselves.
According to recent study carried out by UK researchers those who doodle have better memory recall than those who do not.
The study had the participants divided into two groups - one group was encouraged to color in shapes on a piece of paper while listening to a 2.5 minute telephone message and the other group was left to their own devices while listening.
Both groups, by the way, were told before the message began that it would be dull.
Directly after listening to the message, everyone was asked to write down the eight specific places and names mentioned in the message.

But according to a new study, all guys need to do to reduce the risk of them suffering from this infliction is to get out of the house and into the garden.
Sounds pretty simple. According to the researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, who studied 674 guys aged 45 to 60, half an hour of gardening five days of week can make all the difference, reducing the risk of impotence by around 38%.
Put a bit more sweat into it, burn even more calories, and the risk reduction will be even greater.

Harvard scientists have found a cheap disease-fighter that you probably (hopefully) already do: Flossing your teeth!
In their research, they found that out of 50,000 guys, those with gum disease had a 30% to 50% greater risk of kidney, blood or pancreatic cancer. Why? Possibly because the inflammation caused by gum disease can egg on the growth of cancer cells.
The key, of course, is to floss daily. And brush, too. Ahem.

Step 1: Use a cotton ball or swab to dab a little witch hazel onto the cut. Witch hazel is a natural astringent which tightens surrounding tissues and slows bleeding.
Step 2: Hold an ice cube or ice pack to the nick. The coolness helps to clot the blood.

So here&amp;#8217;s another gem for you: German researchers say that eating a square of dark chocolate every day can reduce your systolic blood pressure (the top number) by 3 points and your diastolic pressure by 2! And you don&amp;#8217;t have to worry about breaking the diet bank, either. Each square only totals about 30 calories (calories full of bliss, I might add.)
The trick? Natural compounds found in dark chocolate raise your levels of nitric oxide, a known blood-vessel relaxer.
So&amp;#8230;more chocolate in your life = better health? Man, what great news for a Monday, eh?

The lovely ladies at Alzheimer&amp;#8217;s Notes inform us that today is National Siesta Day. Coincidentally, it&amp;#8217;s also my birthday. Excuse me while I take that as a sign that I should be spending my Big Day snoozing. ;)
Actually, that&amp;#8217;s not such a bad idea. Along with the host of reasons the Siesta Awareness site gives us to nap, here&amp;#8217;s another: Napping at least 3 days a week leaves you 37% less likely to keel over from heart disease than someone who never naps. This from a study of over 23,000 people! 
Wouldn&amp;#8217;t you have loved to been a subject in that study? And wouldn&amp;#8217;t it be nice if instead of blood pressure meds and low cholesterol diets, doctors prescribed 30 minute naps instead?

See, most people aren&amp;#8217;t all that good at monitoring their own progress. They tend to overestimate the amount of effort (or in the case of walking, the amount of steps) they&amp;#8217;ve accumulated. Got ulcers? Know someone who does? Grab a virgin.
Olive oil, that is.
Yep, the antioxidants found in extra-virgin olive oil (or EVOO if you&amp;#8217;re an unfortunate Rachael Ray fan), may put the kibosh to stomach ulcers by squashing the H. pylori bacteria, which is a cause of ulcers. 
Says a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, all you need is a couple teaspoons a day to get the benefits.
Try preparing your chicken or fish with EVOO instead of veggie oil, or add some to your salad dressing for that extra boost.

As I prepare to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary tomorrow, I was thrilled to come across a small article listing 4 fabulous &amp;#8220;side-effects&amp;#8221; to being in a loving relationship.

Bloody noses - a staple in the lives of kids, sports-playing teens and allergy-ridden adults - are not to be treated by tipping the head back as once was thought. Instead, you are to lower and tip your head forward, catching any wayward bleeding in a tissue.
Why is this? Because tipping the head back will send blood down into the esophagus and potentially into the stomach, which can be irritating and possibly cause vomiting. But by leaning the head forward, you can avoid such issues.

            <description>I&amp;#8217;m not one for questionaires and surveys but this Vitality Compass, an online longevity calculator, had me intrigued.
I wanted to know&amp;#8230;was I in the Blue Zone? What was my life expectancy? And were my current life habits going to lead the way to a grand old age of 100 plus?
So I headed on over and took the Vitality Compass quiz.
Thirty five questions later, I got my answer.
I exist in the Blue Zone.
I&amp;#8217;m 6.5 years younger biologically than my real age. Of course I&amp;#8217;d rather it was 10 or 15 years younger but still any number less that the real one works for me.
My life expectancy is 95.8.
But my healthy life expectancy is only 84.
Looks like I&amp;#8217;m not on track to reach 100 but maybe that&amp;#8217;s just as well given the last decade or two might not be that healthy.

I am not a disciple of yoga but I&amp;#8217;ve taken to humming &amp;#8216;om&amp;#8217; at the strangest times - like now as I type this post.
Why ?
Because I read an article recently that said humming can help keep my sinuses healthy and clear.
As someone who suffers from allergic rhinitis (hay fever) that occassionally develops into sinusitis, I am always on the lookout for ways to stop the sneezing, the dripping, and the blocked nose. I&amp;#8217;m tired of nasal sprays and medicine. I want to try something new.

            <description>This sounds like my kind of gym. No weights, no trendmill, and no exercycle. Just computers, software, books, and smart snacks like tea and walnuts.


Only one problem. This Brain Gym is in San Francisco&amp;#8230;maybe a little too far for most of us to go.
But not to worry, it&amp;#8217;s the wave of the future. More and more Baby Boomers, worried about the escalating numbers of people developing Alzheimer&amp;#8217;s Disease, are looking for ways to keep not only their bodies but also their minds strong.
