A few weeks ago, Chris and BSparl and I went out to dinner. Dining out with our little bird is a bit of a tangled experience, and we don’t spend as much time people watching as we used to because we’re very preoccupied with the baby wrangling.
That night, though, we were sitting and settled and throwing gluten-free puffs (yes, all of us) around the dinner table like confetti when I saw this woman walk in with her family. She settled her family in at the table, and then reached to remove her coat, revealing a beeper clipped to her pocket.
Only it was one of them fancypants beepers with the tubes and the buttons and the accompanying not-making-insulin pancreas. I reckon it was an insulin pump.
Immediately, I wanted to swing mine over my head like a lasso and say “OMG la...

We have just returned from a week in Maine, and enjoyed 3 lobster dinners from 3 different lobster pounds while there. Twice we purchased lobster and took it back to our hotel and ate at the picnic table. Once we ate at the lobster pound. It is tempting to put up pictures of our lobsters before we ate them, but instead, here is a picture of what was left after we were done with two delicious lobsters, corn-on-the-cob, and cole slaw. Nothing fancy here, just a lot of fun and good eating! For the picture before this one, please visit this link at Aspen the Yorkie, for the next picture, please visit this link at Election Reflections.Site Feed (Source: Happy Nutritionist's Nuggets)

Egg Recall AND Deli Meat Recall

Currently, we not only have the egg recall making the news, but a meat recall as well. Here is more information about both.Eggs: The egg recall is leading to the recall of over 450 million eggs. The source seems to be a couple of Iowa farms that have a reputation for poor farming conditions. The first farm to recall eggs is the Wright County Egg farm owned by a business man named Austin DeCoster. The recall was as a result of salmonella poisoning. Later, another egg farm owned by him, Hillandale Farms, also recalled their eggs. When I look at the news reports, I wonder if the images I am seeing are actually from the inside of these farms, but wherever the footage is taken, it looks as cruel as I would expect from an egg farm that is only looking at chickens as $$ signs would look...chicken...

It was my husband's birthday last month, and we spent the day driving around enjoying nature and the outdoors...taking photographs...then stopped for dinner at a restaurant with authentic Mexican food. I can't say that this was Mexican food Frisco style because we are in the northeast, and not in the Texas area. However, if you are traveling this year to the Texas area, or moving down that way like a few friends of mine have recently, or happen to live close enough to Dallas or Frisco, Texas, you'll find some great Mexican restaurants in Frisco and Dallas that offer great Tex-Mex food, the restaurant name is "Mattitos". If anyone has been there to eat, I'd love to hear your comments, just thinking about food like this has my mouth watering...my husband and I love it. He is from out west whe...

Last week we were out of town on business and found ourselves eating at a few different restaurants. My husband is a Diabetic, and we should be watching what we eat, but it's hard when you're on the road...everything on the menu is so tempting. Yes, many restaurants are taking care to have items on the menu that are healthy choices, but I've often wondered if there are ways to plan ahead.SO, I did a little search today to see I could find a few sites that list restaurants, and offer their nutrition guides...and here's what I found...hope these will be as helpful to you as they are to me:Diabetes Daily Restaurant Nutrition GuidesRestaurant Nutrition Facts at dietfacts.com (a huge list!)These two lists alone should be adequate if you want to plan ahead, and have a good idea of what foods are...

My husband and I love Asian food, and having a brother who has married an Asian woman has brought many new and delightful foods to the table when we visit them. Through them we have discovered wonderful Asian restaurants as well. But to be able to prepare meals at home is so much more economical, and while I've learned a few things, I don't know how authentic my cooking is. Today I as introduced to a site that has a delicious recipe, as well as a line of products by Sunbird that will be a big help to someone like me who does not have the time, or finds it difficult to prepare a good, authentic Asian meal at home. You can combine all of the right foods together for your dish, but the authenticity is in the seasoning, and this is where Sun-Bird is a great help.
Although not of Asian descent myself, my brother married a woman who is from the Philippines, and they have a beautiful daughter from China, so I've learned to appreciate and love the different kinds of foods that they have brought into the family to enjoy. This summer they will be traveling to Asia for a missions trip and some vacation time. I don't know whether they considered Accor Hotels when they planned their trip because they have had the plans made for some time, so it may be too late to take advantage of the savings of up to 60% booking on-line between June 23rd - June 29th...that's THIS WEEK.
The next time you’re in a restaurant and see something healthy on the menu, consider your meal choice very carefully. New research shows that when you see a healthy item in a restaurant, you will more than likely order an unhealthy one.
Mind boggling, isn’t it?

They think that the act of seeing something healthy and briefly considering somehow makes it “okay” in our minds to go ahead and eat the thing that’s bad for you. Oddly enough, when a menu had only unhealthy items on it, people would then gravitate toward the one that is the most healthy out of the choices.
Say it with me: MIND BOGGLING!
But this just means that if we know our bodies naturally want to do this, we can then pay attention and make the right choice.

I am not planning on opening a Restaurant, but because I love Twitter, and my username is happynutrition, I have a lot of "foodie followers", some who own, or hope to own their own Restaurant, Diner or Cafe. As I think about restaurants, and how they are managed, it brings to mind my husband and how it was when we were first dating...he had worked in a restaurant and had very definite ideas about how such an establishment should be run...which I often heard about when we were out eating...I am sure there's a LOT that goes into planning a restaurant or eatery of any kind, and how you will decorate it. How you decorate it may depend upon what type of cuisine you are offering, or your own personal likes. After all, it is your restaurant, and in order to enjoy what you are doing and where you...

I guess the cold and snow in the air has me thinking of warmer places, though I must admit that I love a good snow storm, and hope that the one that is predicted to come our way tomorrow, with 6-12 inches of snow, will live up to expectations. But the season for getting away to warmer climates is here, and one place that people like to spend time is Florida. We have wonderful memories of our visit to Orlando with our children...they were "tweens" and teens at the time, so we spent a day at Sea World, a day at MGM Studios and a day at Epcot Center. The rest of the time was spent with family and for me, business meetings. But getting back to our day at Sea World, while there we were able to enjoy a Luau Dinner and show at Sea World's SeaFire Inn, it was a delicious and entertaining experience....

Are You A Cautious Diabetic While Dining Out?

In my very honest opinion, I think the best option when a diabetic goes out to eat is to order the good ol’ salad bar! That’s right. Now, you can’t pile salad on half of your plate and then pasta salad, potato salad, Jello salad and other high sugar and carb no no’s, but you can certainly eat all the greens and veggies with a crouton or two.
We took the kids to lunch today and this would be just what I ordered at Ruby Tuesday’s. The salad bar! And it was very yummy. I ate my big ol’ plate of salad and gulped on a diet coke. I love fountain soda and have been limiting my intake of diet coke since all the studies on how it affects diabetics. But boy, one once in a while… yummmy! And give me some credit, it isn’t cheesecake! Haha.
What do you us...

Filed under: Diet, Prevention, NutritionIt is one thing to prepare heart healthy foods at home, but eating out and trying to maintain a heart healthy diet can be a challenge. Many restaurants do not offer a wide variety of palatable foods for diners wishing to eat in moderation. With this thought in mind, I recently did some research to determine if I could eat healthily in most states or cities around the nation. I hit upon a few websites that offer suggestions for local eating establishments and a few that offer tips for how to eat out. The site that hosts various restaurants varied from city to city. The Denver area lists three restaurants offering heart healthy menus, while the Branson, Missouri area offers just one, Blimpie Subs and Salads.
