By Christopher PrebleThe news media is abuzz with speculation about what President Obama will say in an address this Thursday at the State Department. The topic is the Middle East, and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney explained, “we’ve gone through a remarkable period in the first several months of this year…in the Middle East and North Africa,” and the president has “some important things to say about how he views the upheaval and how he has approached the U.S. response to the events in the region.” The speech, Carney hinted to reporters, would be “fairly sweeping and comprehensive.”
If I were advising the president, I would urge him to say many of the same things that he said in his June 2009 speech in Cairo, this time with some timely references...

“Sadly, in Egypt’s case, a freely elected civilian government may prove powerless in the face of the deeply entrenched and well-organized military.”
“Washington politicians from both parties, and bureaucrats, have for decades successfully decreased our freedom and liberties as they have regulated more and more of our lives, including our retirement.”
“The Ryan proposal correctly focuses on achieving debt reduction through spending cuts, but this very gradual debt reduction schedule is a weakness that could lead to its downfall.”
“Nearly two years ago Sen. McCain, along with Senators Graham and Lieberman, was supping with Qaddafi in Tripoli, discussing the possibility of Washington providing military aid.”

The delight that so many felt to see protesters in Iran using social media has given way to delight about the use of Facebook to organize for freedom in Egypt. But this serial enthusiasm omits that the "Twitter revolution" in Iran did not succeed. The fiercest skeptics even suggest that the tweeting during Iran's suppressed uprising was mostly Iranian ex-pats goosing excitable westerners and not any organizing force within Iran itself. Coming to terms with the Internet, dictatorships are learning to use it for surveillance and control...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Middle East Erupts: Orchestra Seat to the Revolution.
If the powers that be had realized the global implications of the Internet when it was invented, they probably would have found some way to kill it.
Take a look at these early pages and the first site in World Wide Web history. Then take a look at this CNN footage the intrepid Ben Wedeman in Benghazi.
In just two decades, the earth has shifted.
I suspect that the 1989 slaughter of unarmed protesters in Tiananmen Square could not happen today, or at least not without severe international repercussions. Same with Rwanda. One wonders how much sooner Hitler and Stalin might have been stopped if the people in Europe had cell phones and digital cameras, and an Internet on which to uploa...

Suppose you set your sights on a certain position at your place of work. You try more than once to get hired for that position, but the organization’s structure seems completely inflexible and adverse to internal moves and changes. What do you do?
Most people tend to complain, blame, lose hope, and then suffer their disappointment in silence. Unfortunately, they overlook a very important success strategy.
Before you start pining away for that elusive position, you must first do a reality check to see whether you qualify for your goal.
You might aim for something that requires a more advanced skill set than you currently possess, or that simply doesn’t correspond with your abilities at all. In those cases, you need to put some serious effort into yourself before you cry, blame, or compl...

By Christopher PrebleHosni Mubarak's decision to step down as president of Egypt is welcome news. He could have taken a cue from Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, resigning quickly in the face of overwhelming popular opposition. Such a move on Mubarak's part would have avoided much of the confusion that has gripped Egypt for more than two weeks.
By Roger PilonToday POLITICO Arena asks:
At his press conference this afternoon, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs distanced the Obama administration from former Egypt envoy Frank Wisner's suggestion over the weekend that Hosni Mubarak should stay in power as Egypt transitions to a new government. Was Wisner, a former U.S. ambassador to Egypt, right about that and about the potential for a power vacuum?
My response:
Wisner was half right, but on the Mubarak half he was almost certainly wrong. Transitions are messy -- at best. Ask the French about theirs two centuries and more ago. Occasionally they're done pursuant to existing constitutions. Ours from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution wasn't, despite which it wasn't all that messy. We were lucky. We had a relatively...

A recent IT World article entitled "Narus Develops a Scary Sleuth for Social Media" reported on a Narus product called Hone last year:
Hone will sift through millions of profiles searching for people with similar attributes --- blogger profiles that share the same e-mail address, for example. It can look for statistically likely matches, by studying things like the gender, nationality, age, location, home and work addresses of people. Another component can trace the location of someone using a mobile device such as a laptop or phone.

By Christopher PrebleThe turmoil in Egypt, specifically in Cairo, turned violent in the past 36 hours as anti-government protesters clashed with pro-Mubarak groups. During this period, and specifically today, the government crackdown widened to targeting foreign media. Journalists and their crews were arrested, prevented from reporting, and beaten. The anti-government protesters are pointing to Friday as a possible climax in what they are calling the “Friday of departure.”
President Mubarak, in an interview with ABC, said he would like to relinquish power now, but claims chaos will erupt if he did. If he were to step down, or if he follows through on his promise not to run in the presidential election, the million dollar question in Washington becomes: who would the United Stat...

By Malou InnocentOverall, President Obama was right to applaud the Egyptian military for defending (at least for now) rather than killing Egyptian civilians, potentially avoiding the Arab world’s Tienanmen Square. Whether Obama’s rhetoric could have been more supportive, as we saw with Tunisia, is up for debate. But it appears that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s attempt to shape an orderly transition is running into trouble.
The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer reports that Mubarak’s recently appointed Vice President, Omar Suleiman, was “the C.I.A.’s point man in Egypt for renditions—the covert program in which the C.I.A. snatched terror suspects from around the world and returned them to Egypt and elsewhere for interrogation, often under brutal circumstances.” Suleiman...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Mobs and Democracy: The Facebook-Twitter-YouTube Revolution.
You may think you’ve seen this movie before. Just two summers ago, in fact, in Iran. Never say never, but I’m saying never. You’ve never seen anything like what is unfolding today in Egypt.
Just when it seemed humankind was doomed (pick your poison: pandemic, climate change, famine, drought, nuclear war) up pops Tunisia and Egypt. Overnight, it seems, the world has entered a new era. As The New York Times put it:
It was a spectacle that would have been unthinkable less than two decades ago, when Middle Eastern governments strictly censored any subversive images. Now, it seems, all revolutions are televised.

By Christopher PrebleThe new Egyptian cabinet was sworn in today amidst a seventh day of protests across the country. For the White House, the continual tweaking of their response to the crisis, and declining to call for Mubarak to step-down, has left many in Egypt and the region wondering if the United States does in fact want to see the arrival of democracy to Cairo, or if it is simply content with allowing the status-quo to remain, with minor reforms. Or perhaps they are just waiting for the chips to fall where they may.
This illustrates the conundrum facing the Obama administration. Over at The Skeptics, I examine this a bit further:
The Obama administration is stuck with a policy not entirely of its own making – decades of U.S. taxpayer support for the Mubarak regime – but i...

By Malou InnocentOppressed people rarely get opportunities to express their anguish and disillusionment. Today in Egypt for the seventh straight day, thousands of ordinary citizens are pouring out onto the streets, demanding the expulsion of President Hosni Mubarak, calling for an end to emergency laws giving police extensive powers of arrest and detention, and claiming the legitimate right to run their own country. It is well past time for U.S. policymakers to stand with the Egyptian people and rethink Mubarak’s purported role as an “anchor of stability” in the Middle East.
Many in Washington fear that the path Egypt takes after Mubarak might not lead to a freer and more prosperous future and that an Islamist government led by the Muslim Brotherhood, or the Ikhwan, will ...

By Justin LoganI have been following the reporting out of Egypt with the same interest as other onlookers, and I share their ignorance. I know very little about Egypt and do not feel competent to offer predictions, much less advocate for one or the other position on the questions posed to the United States by events in that country.
While the events themselves are exhilarating to watch, of equal interest to me has been the parade of American commentators who know nothing about Egypt but nonetheless have been providing copious commentary on the subject. I thought Andrew Exum’s lament on this phenomenon was particularly righteous. Watching cable news, Exum reports that he was:
absolutely stunned by the willingness of the show’s guests to opine about Egypt without having any a...

By Jim HarperIn response to civil unrest, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. According to the blog post at the link just above, Egypt’s four main ISPs have cut off their connections to the outside world. Specifically, their “BGP routes were withdrawn.” The Border Gateway Protocol is what most Internet service providers use to establish routing between one another, so that Internet traffic flows among them.
An attack on BGP is one of few potential sources of global shock cited by an OECD report I noted here the other day. The report almost certainly imagined a technical attack by rogue actors but, assuming current reporting to be true, the source of this attack is a government exerci...

The following backround data on dengue in Egypt are abstracted from the Gideon e-book series. [1,2]
Historical background:
– Outbreaks of dengue were reported in Cairo and Alexandria during 1799; and in Port Said in 1871.
– Subsequent cases were reported in Cairo and the sea ports in 1880; and in the Nile delta in 1889.
– Dengue fever was widespread during the first half of the 20th century.
– A decline in transmission was recorded in Egypt after 1940, and was ascribed to rapid decrease of Stegomyia (Aedes) aegypti populations with the introduction of DDT during and after the Second World War.
Notable outbreaks:
1928 – An outbreak (70 fatal cases) was reported.
1937 – An outbreak (50 fatal cases) was reported.

Hating On Martha: Always Profitable, Never Gets Old

Mariana Pasternak, Martha Stewart’s ex-bestie, went on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday to hawk her new book, The Best of Friends: Martha and Me.
In the video below, Pasternak waxes poetic about their past with host George Stephanopoulos. “…We went to the Galapagos, we went to Machu Picchu, we sailed the Nile, rode horses in Egypt, paddled the Amazon … and on those trips we shared everything. We shared excitement, we shared a room, we shared a bed”. They also shared insider trading info that landed Martha in the slammer. Oops!
Pasternak misses her friendship with Martha, but not as much as she hopes her book rakes it in.

Bad headline, sorry – but I have a limited number of characters and I wasn’t sure how to word this. How about:
Some Egyptians Who Died and Were Mummified Had Heart Disease, Just Like Us in the Year 2009.
Too long, huh?
Researchers don’t only research current issues, such as finding cures for cancer or ways to make body parts regrow, they also look back in an attempt to understand what happened in earlier times.
In this particular study, researchers were looking for signs of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, in mummies. We tend to think of heart disease as a modern problem, but the earlier discovery of the Pharaoh Merenptah (c. 1213-1203 BC), who was 60 years old at his death, having had atherosclerosis, arthritis and dental decay led researchers to study othe...

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has elevated their swine flu pandemic alert to phase 5, the number of confirmed cases as of April 29, 2009 remains extremely low, with most cases mild and rarely fatal. In fact, although you may hear about some 2,500 cases in Mexico with 152 deaths, only 26 cases and 7 deaths have actually been confirmed as being due to swine flu. Around the world only 148 cases are confirmed. The one death of the 91 cases in the United States was in a Mexican child who contracted the illness in Mexico before visiting the U.S. The only thing newsworthy about these numbers is that they are so low and yet the reaction to them so high.
It’s important also to remember that “pandemic” simply means worldwide spread. An epidemic is a localized outbrea...

Royal Egyptian Dentists’ Tomb Unearthed

Just over four thousand years ago, three royal Egyptian dentists were laid to rest in a private tomb located south of Cairo. Looters unearthed the tomb recently to reveal no mummies, but a mud, brick, and limestone structure with multiple hieroglyphs on the walls depicting the daily lives of dentists - minus the dental procedures. The symbol of an eye over a tusk told archaeologists that the tomb was, indeed, built for dentists, and the location attests to the fact that the inhabitants were royal attendants. A curse inscribed on the wall suggests that anyone who enters the tomb be eaten by a crocodile and his fang-y friend, a snake.
