We forgot to put Karaoke on our list of things to do this weekend, but lucky for us, Elton John, Debby Harry, Lady Gaga, and Sting didn’t forget. This video is pretty shaky, but it’s worth watching for this killer cover of “Don’t Stop Believin’”:

Girl singers, as they were all called, figured big in my musical tastes back then. Today, we have Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield for ya. Who else here knew that Dusty Springfield’s was the first fan club that Elton John joined as a kid?
See, there you go, a new bit of trivia for you. This is why they pay me the big bucks.

So the news is that Elton John wants to adopt a Ukranian toddler. Yet another celebrity adoption story. I don’t know how to feel about these celebrity adoptions. Theoretically it should be a good thing – individually these institutionalised children get a chance at a better life, and potentially the publicity could shine the spotlight on the millions of orphaned children throughout the world languishing in institutions and/or poverty. Children for whom there could be plenty of willing adoptive parents, if only the systems internationally didn’t make the process so difficult. But the stories never seem to have that effect – rather the spotlight is on the celebrity, and the whole tone of the reporting is rather controversial and negative.
While I'm away, dust out the demons inside...There's a real strong chance that my husband and I will be facing some time apart, and it will quite possibly be more than a year. I can't say much more yet. My stomach feels knotty, and my heart ragged. I am trying to enjoy the moments we have together now, but I'm so angry. I had big plans for us. I had big plans for me. I feel my life screeching to a halt. Perhaps it will be good to pause, to put the focus on nothing but me and healing my life. Perhaps I'll get myself cleaned out and he'll get himself cleaned out, and we'll have a fresh start. Perhaps I'll realize that it's impossible to live with someone who invites such chaos into my life. Either way, something will be happening. The time isn't wasted, and I'm growing, and that's good.
Hillary Clinton Watch: Elton John Fundraiser Nets Hillary $2.5 Million

Singer Elton John (L) greets Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and former President Bill Clinton (R) as he takes the stage before performing a fundraising concert for Clinton’s campaign at New York’s Radio City Music Hall April 9, 2008.
Does anyone think that this fundraiser by Elton John for Hillary Clinton will NET Hillary any more support or votes in her quest for the Presidency?
Elton John used Hillary Clinton’s $2.5 million fund-raiser at Radio City Music Hall Wednesday night to stand up for women’s rights.
“I never cease to be amazed at the misogynistic attitude of some of the people of this country, and I say to hell with it,” said John, clad in a sequined black dinner jacket, red silk shirt and red sunglass...

I was chatting with MPJ earlier about Elton John, and now I'm trapped in an Elton John nexus in my head. I love this song: It's four o'clock in the morning Damn it listen to me good I'm sleeping with myself tonight Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive. It's particularly appealing to me because I've found so much strength in sleeping alone. When I find myself responding too much to my husband's situation, I go sleep in a spare room.I used to follow him around. If he couldn't sleep and got up to watch television, I'd go sleep on the couch next to him with my head in his lap. I hated to be away from him. I still hate to be away from him, but sometimes he's not there. Sometimes, it's better just to be with me, to sleep with myself. It's the way it's phrased in the song that's so speci...
