A former executive assistant for the La Habra Boys and Girls Club was sentenced today to three years in prison for embezzling about $135,000 from the organization over two years, using some of the stolen money to pay for breast implants. Superior Court Judge Roger Robbins also ordered Lynette Rojas to pay $270,000 in fines and $165,113.08 in restitution to the club. But the 37-year- old La Habra residents appears unable to pay any of the money back, Deputy District Attorney Marc Labreche said. Rojas, who could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted at trial, pleaded guilty April 4 after Robbins agreed to sentence her to three years behind bars.

Should Afghanistan Be Allowed to Imprison Women for "Moral Crimes"?

When you think of prison inmates, you probably imagine people who’ve been accused of heinous crimes like murder, armed robbery, or embezzlement, but in Afghanistan, women are jailed for being accused of much less. At the only women’s prison in Afghanistan, at least half the women there are incarcerated under accusations of bad character, and other “moral crimes.”
Women are often falsely accused of crimes and jailed because of grudges or vendettas, or merely because their husbands are the ones who accuse them. When one woman’s husband claimed she was an adulteress, she was thrown in prison – all while she was three months pregnant with his child.
Putting their wives in jail certainly seems like an easy way for Afghan men to get out of being married and keep w...

Outrage in NJ and MN

This I can understand:

Parents in the Cherry Hill, NJ, school district called for the resignation of the special education director Israela Franklin at a school board meeting on Tuesday night. Parents were concerned (if not, it seems, outraged) over a padded room at Russell Knight Elementary School in Cherry Hill.

This is still hard to grasp; outrage seems understandable.

Between August 2004 and June 2007, Shianne Verness embezzled more than 40 thousand dollars from an autism organization, the RT Autism Awareness Foundation, and transferred the money to a personal account. Yesterday, November 29th, Verness was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 10 years of probation, and 500 hours of community service.

There is much that I don’t understand when it comes to autism: How exactly the genetics work, the role of synapses, why belief continues in some theories of autism causation in the face of scientific evidence to the contrary, what Charlie means by “next time.” But why Shianne Verness, former treasurer of the RT Autism Awareness Foundation, would transfer $36,555 in funds for the group to her personal checking account—-she is charged with six counts of felony for embezzlement in Olmsted District Court (Minnesota)—this I do not understand.
Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem is quoted in the August 8th Postbulletin.com:
While the actions of Ms. Verness did not physically injure any particular person, the allegations nonetheless are quite alarming….
