In a development that may have you undergo your next medical procedure the old-fashioned way, two researchers from the University of California-San Francisco and the University of Oslo are reporting that inhaled anesthetics significantly contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer and add to the overall global warming gas content in the atmosphere.
Moreover, the study’s authors conclude with some valuable advice for your own practice: “From our calculations, avoiding N2O and unnecessarily high fresh gas flow rates can reduce the environmental impact of inhaled anesthetics.”
We’d like to venture even further. Not only would we recommend closed-circuit, low-flow anesthesia even with sevoflurane (damn those kidneys!), we’d also suggest that patients arrive b...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Teen pop star Nick Jonas, taking a break from touring with his brothers to raise awareness of juvenile diabetes, said he dreams about being U.S. president and may study political science in college.

The 16-year-old singer, songwriter and member of pop trio the Jonas Bros, spoke on Monday to a sold-out audience at the National Press Club, a venue often reserved for presidents, kings and chief executives but for Jonas had many seats occupied by teenage and pre-teen girls.

Jonas talked about raising awareness and funding for juvenile diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2005.

Asked about recent trips to Washington, the youngest of the Jonas Bros told the crowd "I've always had this dream of becoming president one day." He said it was "very ...

He has been “portrayed” here a a cult leader, and that’s maybe only my opinion. And in he latest diatribes he continues to attack head on the “problems” with America and how He will be able to solve it, by just creating a new cult, by breeding new cult followers that think are doing something great and in the end are just putting more fuel in the fire.
He just forgets that, the more you fight the more you give your opponent an opportunity to fight back and gain more support (Yes, this post is a Catch 22, but I’m David in this case).
I spent around 700 words last time saying that we scientists need to rethink the way we tell the world the things we do:

UN: Pollution haze could lead to extreme weather, harm farming.

Beijing - Thick brown clouds of soot, particles and chemicals stretching from the Persian Gulf to Asia threaten health and food supplies in the world, the U.N. reported Thursday, citing what it called the newest threat to the global environment.

Still, they're years away from doing much with this, leaving US military with waterboarding and other techniques to wear down perceived "enemies."
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Here's a mind-bending idea: The U.S. military is paying scientists to study ways to read people's thoughts.

Scientists use electroencephalography, or brain wave-reading technology, to measure brain activity.
The hope is that the research could someday lead to a gadget capable of translating the thoughts of soldiers who suffered brain injuries in combat or even stroke patients in hospitals. But the research also raises concerns that such mind-reading technolo...

This from Truthout.org today. Excellent article.
And might I remind my prickly readers, this blog republishes articles I, Gina, find interesting. As a journalist, I take no stance in politics and so on. It's not allowed, as Nancy Imperiale so eloquently explained in her blog. Also, readers, please keep a reign on the bad language -- not only is cursing boring, it is unimaginative and not welcome on this blog.
Sorry for that message, but with world tensions escalating, I will be covering them more and more.
Now, the article, translated from the French, below:

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Russia must honor its cease-fire deal with Georgia.

Randy Scheunemann, foreign policy and national security adviser for John McCain, has lobbying ties with the nation of Georgia.

Is it possible that this time the October surprise was tried in August, and that the garbage issue of brave little Georgia struggling for its survival from the grasp of the Russian bear was stoked to influence the U.S. presidential election?
