And so, another working week will soon draw to a close. This is, of course, our signal to daydream about the weekend. Our agenda includes some therapeutic swimming, catching up on our reading and taking in a soccer match with the short people. And you? How about enjoying the weather with a nice bike ride? Or spending time with someone special? Perhaps thinking big thoughts is in order. Whatever you do, have a wonderful time. And be safe. See you soon…

There is no shock that layoffs continue, is there? In the past few months, several drugmakers disclosed plans to reduce staff or continued with previously announced cuts. Among them has been Abbott Laboratories, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Lundbeck, Lonza, and Johnson & Johnson, among many others.
And so the latest monthly tally of pharma layoffs amounts to 6.069 industry jobs lost in September, compared with just 200 in August, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, the outplacement consulting. Nonetheless, the industry has shed 43,334 jobs this year, which appears on track to nearly match the 58,583 that were eliminated last year (you can read the latest report here and the last monthly survey here). The only sectors to throw more people overboard so far th...

Following through on plans announced earlier this year, Lonza is eliminating 106 jobs from its plant in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, which makes various pharmaceutical ingredients. The Swiss company, which recently signed supply deals with GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences (see here and here), confirmed the planned job losses in a filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.
At the time the closure was first announced in January, Lonza also signaled plans to shutter two other plants - one in Shawinigan, Canada, and another in Workingham, UK - and eliminate a total of 175 jobs. A report at the time indicated that about 140 people work at the Conshohocken facility, although the status of those jobs is not clear. Lonza employs about 8,500 people worldwide.

Just one month after agreeing to buy Penwest Pharmaceuticals for $144 million, Endo Pharmaceuticals is in the process of laying off sales managers and sales reps, according to sources. The exact number of jobs to be eliminated is unclear at the moment, but we are told Endo is engaging InVentiv, a contract sales organization, to provide replacements and lower expenses. We await a reply from Endo.
This is not the only dismal jobs news in the pharmaceutical industry this week. As noted earlier, the recently announced $3.2 billion merger between Biovail and Valeant Pharmaceuticals will cause about 25 percent of the combined, 4,000-person workforce to be shown the door, according to this email sent by ceo Mike Pearson to employees yesterday. And Scrip News reported today that Shionogi is cuttin...

I love tile floor and the old Victorian style look it had. I give this office a 10 for their mad (good) decorating skills they have. A few minutes later my name was called *please let Dr. N be good* The MA weighed me and off to the exam room I went. Dr. N entered the office, shook my hand and introduced himself. He asked me a few questions. When were you diagnosed with diabetes? What type of diabetes do you have? What type of treatment have you had in the past and what are you doing now? How was your pregnancy? Do you ...

The agency alleges that Brooke Wagner, 44, a former vp of corporate communications at Indevus Pharmaceuticals, improperly relied on insider info when he sold shares of the biotech, which is based in Lexington, Ma., in May and June 2008. The SEC claims Wagner sold the stock after learning during a company conference call with the FDA that the agency planned to delay approval for Nebido, a testosterone replacement drug being developed by the company.
In its suit, the SEC claims the call took place on May 30 and that Wagner’s trading occurred over the next few days. Ironically, he allegedly assembled Indevus employees three days later that no trading in Indevus stock should take place because it would violate securities laws. The agency alleges he avoided losses of $43,000 by selling th...
