China Surpasses US In Energy Consumption

BP's 2011 Statistical Review of World Energy is out and the biggest news: China has become the biggest world energy consumer. BP, in its 60th annual Statistical Review of World Energy, said China accounted for 20.3 per cent of demand, compared with the United States' 19 per cent. The report said China's consumption rose by 11.2 per cent last year. American demand increased 3.7 per cent. For carbon dioxide emissions China already blew past the United States about 5 years ago due to China's much heavier reliance on coal. Now China has surpassed the US in total heat energy used across all energy types. The Chinese economy's heavy reliance on coal makes it more immune to high oil prices. Though...
By Roger PilonToday Politico Arena asks:
Given that crude oil prices surged to nearly $90 per barrel on Friday, and could spike even higher if the crisis causes a shutdown of the Suez Canal, how should policymakers in Wasihngton respond regarding oil and the crisis in Egypt? Does the situation underscore a need for more domestic production? And does this crisis bolster or hamper Obama’s clean energy initiative that he called for in his State of the Union address last week?
My response:
The unrest in Egypt should have no bearing whatever on American energy policy. Like nearly every other commodity — food, clothing, shelter, education, health care — energy, from whatever source, is far more efficiently and equitably produced and distributed by the market than by government...

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former Dupont CEO Chad Holliday say we spend too little on energy R&D and energy is a big problem. But our country is neglecting a field central to our national prospect and security: energy. Although the information technology and pharmaceutical industries spend 5 to 15 percent of their revenue on research and development each year, U.S. companies' spending on energy R&D has averaged only about one-quarter of 1 percent of revenue over the past 15 years. And despite talk about the need for "21st-century" energy sources, federal spending on clean energy research -- less than $3 billion -- is also relatively small. Compare that with roughly $30 billion that the U.S. government annually spends on... (Source: FuturePundit)

Will the Greens remain the only party in Canada to support a carbon tax - and what it reasonably calls tax shifting?
Probably.
The big three automakers national parties, politically beholden to the worst fears of automakers and/or their employees, choose not to lead Canada toward one of the most meaningful climate change solutions - even while Québec (and, on auto emissions standards, California) already begin to take such actions on their own.
Anyone who did more than space out during the 1970s will remember the oil embargo which plunged the world into gasoline shortages ...
