Pfizer’s Lipitor Webpage Is Slammed By FDA

Once again, a web page is deemed problematic by the FDA. In a letter sent by the agency earlier this week, Pfizer was chastised because its Lipitor web page made misleading representations and suggestions about several other drugs. The issue came to light, by the way, thanks to the FDA ‘Bad Ad’ program, which encourages people to file complaints about troublesome promotions (see this).
What exactly did the FDA find objectionable. In its letter, the Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising, and Communications noted that the Lipitor webpage contained a link that led to a webpage about Lipitor which contained a “Click to Continue” link. This took the visitors to individual product websites for Caduet and Chantix, and to the prescribing information for Norvasc.
However, Pfizer ...

People like sex. They like sex so much, they spend a lot of time searching for it online. Go figure. (You can tell I’m about to delve into really highbrow, heady stuff here…)
Researchers Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam recently published a book, A Billion Wicked Thoughts, detailing their analysis of 400 million searches they collected from the Dogpile search engine. Of those 400 million searches, 13 percent (55 million) were for erotic content.
How did those 55 million searches break down? Let’s find out… but let’s also look at the methodology of these researchers to see if their findings are worth the paper that they are printed on. (If you think not, you’re probably right.)

So here’s what people on Dogpile search for when it comes to sexual interests. N...

Searching for health information - why google is not always a good idea

It's become a knee jerk reflex for most people to use the web when they have a medical problem. They need information, and it's quite logical that the internet is the first place they turn to ( most people live in nuclear families and don't have a family physician, so they can no longer tap into the insights of their family doctor or the wisdom of their grandmother). While the web is a great source of health information, unfortunately, using google to search for information is not always a smart thing to do. This is because while google is a great search engine, it's not always good at helping you to find reliable information. Google finds lots of stuff - but a lot of it is poor quality garbage - and google is not smart enough ( yet !) to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff !For he...

If your mind were a diesel engine, anxiety would be the leaded gas that was accidentally poured in and responsible for all the burps and stutters.
Even more so than depression, I think, anxiety is the big disabler in my life, with a capital D. That is why I try to nip my anxiety in its early symptoms. That doesn’t always happen, of course, but here are some techniques I try, and seem to work for me. Who knows, maybe they’ll work for you too!
1. Recognize the reptilian brain.
My therapist friend Elvira Aletta gives a brilliant neuropsychology lesson in one of her posts where she explains the two parts of our brain: the primitive part containing the amygdala — which is responsible for generating and processing our fear and other primal emotions — and our frontal lobes...

Recently I developed a simple mobile interface to the Registry of Standard Biological Parts – the database that is currently the focal point for parts-based synthetic biology. I’ve called this mobile interface mPartsRegistry and I thought it would be worth outlining it’s features and sharing some notes about the project, in case someone else finds it useful.
mPartsRegistry is a simple interface to the Registry of Standard Biological Parts aimed at mobile smartphone browsers. It’s powered by the Parts Registry API, which provides a simple RESTful interface to key metadata about parts in the database. It features:

. A simple interface tailored for mobile WebKit browsers (Android browser, mobile Safari, probably others). Web-based, zero-installation required.

My medical group is already using Google Adwords, so why would we benefit from advertising on Facebook?

The major advantage of advertising to prospective patients on a social networking site, like Facebook, is that you can make use of both demographic and psychographic information when targeting your patients.

Example of Google Adwords in a medical group
To understand this shift in online healthcare marketing and the power Facebook Ads brings, we need to look at the current Google Adwords situation. We set up medical Google Adwords campaigns for all our medical group clients as part of our Online Presence package. This service allows these healthcare providers to promote their services to prospective patients. For example, a person located in our client’s city who is searching on...

This is a new Multiphysics simulation by Lagoa Technologies Inc.

Amazing graphics and simulations, ideal for gaming engine.
Physics engines. We may not understand most of the maths and skill that goes into developing one, but many of us appreciate their use in the latest games across consoles and PC.
While game engines like Unreal, Source, and id Tech 5 may have very capable physics engines built-in, that doesn’t stop new enginesappearing, and in this case blowing us away with the quality of the physics on show.
The Lagoa Multiphysics 1.0 engine has been developed by Thiago Costa, who currently works as Lead Technical Director at Ubisoft Digital Arts in Montreal.

If you have a new website or blog or are just interested in utilising new distribution platforms to gain additional traffic this blog post is for you …
Like me, if you work on a blog you will need to do something with your posts in order to deliver some links and traffic to your website. Many people dont realise that a blog can be significantly leveraged through a variety of communities, not just to deliver traffic but also build a loyal following. If your content is good and your audience is accurate blog posts will act like a fishing rod to bring in traffic.
Here are some tips which I will be sharing at the Strategic Social Media for Healthcare Conference next week in NYC.
Blog Commenting ::

First advise is not to worry about follow and no follow links. I have seen no follow links...

Today’s marketing sits in an entirely different sector of blog posts, tweets & status updates. We are now “content marketers”

Content marketing is the idea of distributing relevant and beneficial content to engage potential patients and provide them with something of value. Yes, you read that correctly! Nowhere does it say anything about pitching your services or promoting your hospital. Instead, content marketing focuses on delivering information and services that inform your target markets and enables them to become more intelligent buyers. (Source: Nicola Ziady)

Best Strategies ::
• Become an expert in your field and get involved in online communities. Contribute to blogs but don’t spam with shameless self promotion for your blog. Quality links come through the relationships formed in the communities, not the comments themselves.
• Publish helpful, interesting content. This could range from a tutorial to a video or tool. Original research or polls attract quality links.

A recent survey from Omniture, May 2010, showed that marketers were unable to effectively measure marketing effectiveness.
When asked which analytics would give them the most valuable insights, marketers said the importance of marketing cost, orders, average order size and conversion rate. But they had the greatest ability to measure visits, page views, page views per visit and click-throughs.
Only 41% could measure social marketing conversion.
Overall, 80% said it was important to measure ROI from online activities, but just 31% could effectively do so. (Source: Nicola Ziady)

Patients engage in healthcare social media for rational and emotional reasons.
:: Emotional healthcare social media users want support from people who are going through a similar experience.
:: Rational social media users are searching for information about their specific conditions and symptoms.
“Our research shows that social media is a valuable forum for patients to discuss their health issues and concerns while connecting with others facing similar circumstances,” said Mark Miller, senior vice president, Epsilon Strategic & Analytic Consulting Group.
“This participation provides reassurance and intimacy, and many of the individuals who are highly engaged in social media feel better equipped to manage their health.” (Source: Nicola Ziady)

In a Forrester report published earlier this year, Social Media spend is expected to increase by 34% by 2014, placing it just behind mobile marketing, but ahead of search marketing.
Regardless of industry, the top areas of marketing, whether it’s interactive or marketing in general, for any business, must focus on social, mobile, and also the real-time Web. Thus forming a Golden Triangle engagement.

The iPhone is the poster child of mobile.
Facebook is the poster child of social.

Industry experts, I do not include myself, are pitching 2010 as the year of mobile.
With the continued adoption of 3G mobiles and great advances in technology, they see big opportunity for brands to build connection points with patients [consumers] on this platform. Social media is proving to be the most readily adopted digital media channel in the mobile space by users.
Mobile applications such as Foursquare illustrate that users are embracing the opportunity to update their profiles or announce their locations to their fellow social followers, so brands should seek to position and integrate the right message at the right time and place.
While other kinds of mobile marketing, such as mobile search, is not as widely adopted, people still seek information on the go.

Social media and search engine optimisation (SEO) have competing goals.
One aims to pull users to a designated website, while the other enables and encourages conversations on third-party property.

The social search model is the newest endeavor to make search a more relevant and more fulfilling experience for audiences. Social search combines the best features of collective search results from the top search destinations and mixes them with a communal twist of lime.
With social search we can now view what our friends or like-minded fans think around the world.
Right now we are witnessing an entirely new way to connect people and sites to keywords. The interactive marketing industry is moving beyond simple keyword tagging methodologies and popularity ranking systems.
A rose is never just a rose.
When Gertrude Stein wrote “a rose is a rose is a rose” she had no idea how complex the garden actually was!

The tool is the the ultimate time saver to building powerful social media accounts. One of the secrets of top Diggers, Stumblers, Navigators etc… is being the first to submit stories already becoming popular on other social news sites. For example you can browse Reddit to find good stories already submitted and be the first to submit them to Digg. You can browse Digg and be the first to Stumble pages that are becoming popular there. Most if not all articles on the front page of Digg are submitted to StumbleUpon and will get a lot of Thumbs up.
F-Shaped Pattern For Reading Web Content – Jakob Nielsen

The above heatmaps show how users read three different types of Web pages:
  * an article in the “about us” section of a corporate website (far left),
  * a product page on an e-commerce site (center), and
  * a search engine results page (SERP; far right).
If you squint and focus on the red (most-viewed) areas, all three heatmaps show the expected F pattern. Of course, there are some differences. The F viewing pattern is a rough, general shape rather than a uniform, pixel-perfect behavior.
On the e-commerce page (middle example), the second crossbar of the F is lower than usual because of the intervening product image. Users also allocated significant fixation time to a box in the upper right part of the page where the price and “add to cart” button are found.

There are two categories of SMO methods:

Twitter can be one of the best ways to engage with patients and the media.
As Twitter has evolved into a real-time news tool, it’s time to stop wondering about its value and start developing a real strategy.

I recently read a post from Sally Falkow, a seasoned PR professional who blogs at the Proactive Report. She gave 10 tips to use in making Twitter a legitimate PR tool:
  1. Find your Tweeple. (Your target audience/community)
  2. Follow people who are talking about you, your brand and your industry
  3. Set goals for your Twitter activity
  4. Provide valuable content
  5. Don’t treat Twitter like another broadcast medium
  6. Tweet every day
  7. Use Hashtags
  8. Take note of the latest trends and buzz on Twitter
  9. Be helpful
10. Expand from Twitter

In order to prove the value of social media, it’s important to understand how it differs from traditional advertising.
If you’re like most hospitals or medical schools, you’ve already moved into the social media arena. But now, you may be getting questions from your CMO or COO about how it’s working. Or you may be trying to decide if you’re allocating the appropriate resources to social media. How can you know if it’s really working?

Engagement vs. impressions
Social media success relies on engagement vs. advertising’s traditional number of impressions. The ability to engage one-on-one with your audience can allow you to deliver custom...

2. Use free and paid research tools to research terms – there are a slew of both free and paid research tools which can help you define keywords necessary to create a keyword glossary. Use tools in conjunction with your own ...

I recently came across some tips for gaining top visibility for press releases in both search engines and media that I thought were worth sharing.

Mashable reported that search giant Google is adding to its empire through acquisition by purchasing social search engine Aardvark. Google told the online site that it’s “signed an agreement to acquire Aardvark but don’t have any additional details to report at this time,” although Tech Crunch valued the deal at $50 million.
Aardvark has deep ties to Google thanks to founders and former Google executives Max Ventilla and Nathan Stoll. The company had raised $6 million in venture capital funding for the concept, which involves getting answers to questions from social distribution channels. Mashable describes Aardvark as “very much like an alternative search engine that puts your social circle to work” by taking questions and filtering it to friends through social channels, e...

According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, the search giant saw revenues increase by 23 percent in the first quarter of 2010 over last year while also increasing the size of their work force by four percent since the start of the year.
While the revenue increases are not at the level of 40 percent growth routinely seen in the past, it does reverse a trend of declining revenues which started at the beginning of 2009. Google says that larger advertisers are returning to online spending “in droves” as the economy appears to have weathered the worst effects of the recent recession.

Basic No. 1

Link to your website. Always, always, always link back to your website.
And as for those three primary ways to post…

A Golden Opportunity for Dentists: More Than Two-Thirds of Internet Users Search for Medical Info Online

Today, a Web Exclusive article, “When patients know more than you,” posted on www.DentalProductsReport.com. In it, Senior Editor Noah Levine tells us that a survey by Pew Internet Project reported 75-80% of Internet users look for medical information online.
Question is, does the vast medical and dental information on the Internet educate and inform patients well? Does it make your job as a dentist easier or harder?
That really depends on where patients are getting their information and whether it’s accurate and relevant. Wikipedia, for instance, is a great resource, but you don’t have to be an expert to post information. (Wiki means “what I know is.”) Blogs, too, give the average Joe access to opinions and not-necessarily-factual information.
Levine’s article is a great star...

I’m not the world’s biggest Thomas the Tank Engine fan. Too many things to buy. Too many accessories and pieces. Differently sized trains wouldn’t run on all the pieces of track. When Alex and Ned were younger we had some cute Thomas toys (the take-along roundhouse was a big hit with everyone, including me because it stored all its own pieces) but he didn’t seem to have real legs in our house. We put the track and engines away a couple of years ago, and there wasn’t a peep of protest.

Apparently, though, a lot of children with autism really like Thomas in part because the facial expressions are so easy to read. (Here’s a gallery of the many faces of Thomas.)
Now an Australian profit has partnered with the smiley-faced engine to create a game whose mi...

You went to college for 6 or 8 years, and in that time, how many papers did you write? A ton. So you know how to communicate with the written word. The thing is, there are many different types of writing. The style you use to communicate with dentists on a professional level is different from the style you use in writing an email to your mother. Likewise, online communication requires a certain style. It should appeal to (1) patients, (2) potential patients, (3) search engines, and (4) referring dentists, if applicable. This is true of a website, blog, newsletter, or article. In addition to the style issue, choosing the point of view to can be daunting. Read on for some points you need to think about when composing (or approving) copy for your website.

Dental Websites: Search Engine Spiders Feed on Words

What makes you like a website? The colors, photos, look and feel of the site? The motion, the videos, or a fancy opening page? The things that appeal to humans do not appeal to search engine spiders.
SEO spiders refers to the technology behind indexing websites. If the spiders like your site, it will rank well in Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. If the spiders don’t like your site, in competitive markets, it will get buried. To spiders, words are like big, fat flies. SEO spiders’ mouths water at the thought of a website with a ton of content on it.
But you like the visual elements. That’s okay. You don’t have to give up the visual elements of your website in order to please the spiders – but you may have to compromise.

The FDA has recently changed the policies on search engine marketing. Companies can only buy sponsored search terms if they can contain a fair and balanced claim. Bill Drummy, the CEO of Heartbeat Digital, states that this may actually be a positive thing. Click-through rates are actually higher when addressing a cause or symptom as opposed to addressing the drug directly. For more, read the Q&A here. (Source: ePharma Summit)

For licenced databases I am working on the url-string to include our digital library proxy access. Luckily I already have a huge list of library resource urls due to the Library Toolbars.

Search plugins allows you to do a direct search from your internet browser search box, without having to go to the database or search enigine first.
The MyCroft Project has been gathering all kinds of useful stuff at their site, including a search for OpenSearch Plugins. I could not resist in putting that into a handy widget via Widgetbox. You can also see it work on this Blog

DRUGS ARE NOT LIKE ANTIFREEZE Drugs are not like antifreeze. Your heart is not a car engine that needs mechanical repair, like reconnecting the fuel pump or cleaning out the hoses. As a human being you have a built in mechanism for repairing yourself. Many of you must find a new model that is more powerful than last year’s model. If you don’t get a prescription for a drug advertised on TV, you find your doctor lacking. The pressure is on the doctor to prescribe new exotic drugs. You don’t want your doctors opinion on the real dangers of new powerful drugs. You expect medicine for every symptom you have. When given a prescription, you are confident your doctor knows what he is doing. Your body has the best pharmacy and releases the best natural drugs that will heal. ...

An article published at www.hygienist.com, the online version of Modern Hygienist magazine, reviews how hygienists can play a valuable role in dental practice marketing. Our own Linda Miles is quoted in the article as stating, “The hygiene department is the foundation of every general practice and should be one-third of the practice’s gross annual production, excluding the doctor’s exam fee.” As the leader at the helm of your practice, you may not have considered how your hygienist(s) could benefit your online marketing efforts. These three tips will enhance your dental website AND make your life a little easier.
1) Ask your hygienist to form and be chairperson for a marketing committee that includes three other members of your staff. The team can evaluate current marketin...

If you have a dental website or blog, you are responsible and will be held legally accountable for copyright or trademark infringement on your site. You need to know the basics to keep yourself out of trouble. Problem is, the Internet is a relatively new medium. “When it comes to trademark use on the Internet, the law is muddled,” according to an article in WebsiteMagazine.com (November2008). Everyone is learning by trial and error. Some things are black and white, though. If you don’t want to receive a faxed invoice for illegal usage of an image on your website, you need to be informed.
The repercussions of posting content that’s not your own or misusing trademarks can involve thousands upon thousands of dollars in fines - or even jail time. On top of this, dentist...

You may think it sounds pretty impressive to hear that a website is on “page one.” Granted, being on page one (or even better, at the top of page one) is a great goal if the term your site is found for is a good one. Here’s what I mean -
When someone is looking for a dentist online, he or she will usually Google* the word “dentist” and a nearby city. This would mean that a Katy, Tx resident may type in “Katy dentist” or “Houston dentist.” Beyond that, the searcher may look for a more specific topic like “cosmetic dentistry,” “gum disease,” “crowns in an hour,” or “clear braces.”
To be found on page one for these relevant terms is terrific. To be found on page one, even in the number-one sp...

Are the keywords you’re targeting relevant to site content?
Are targeted keywords popular phrases used in search engine queries?
Do page titles start with your targeted keywords?
Does your site employ H1 header tags for prominent content titles?
Is your permanent body copy contextually sufficient and keyword-rich?
Do text links include targeted keywords that point users to pages within your site?
Do graphics used in the site have descriptive, keyword-rich alternative attributes that are useful for visitors?

This may sound overwhelming, so let’s break it down. You probably ...

Submissions to web directories.
For some internet marketers, web directories is not something they would have preferred if only they are given a choice. But without a doubt, web directories are sure-fire ways of driving website traffics.
These directories are effective ways of building PR (page rank) that helps websites get good rankings in the Google search engine. Google uses page ranks to grade the results based from the searches that visitors are making. Having a higher PR is having a better listing compared with others.
PR are based on the backlinks that you have and its quality. So it follows that the more backlinks you have, the higher your PR will be. You will also get better rankings.
This is the essence behind using web directories and linking. Once these combination have worked ...

You’ve invested in a fabulous website to promote your practice online. After all, it’s the thing to do. Everyone’s online these days – at least everyone who you want to attract to your practice. The problem is, no matter how sensational your website, it is potentially competing with every other dental website in the world. How can you narrow your market to limit your competition and get your site in front of your target audience?
First of all, you need a solid SEO strategy. SEO stands for search engine optimization. In short, SEO is the elements that make a website show up closer to page one or two, ideally closer to the top of page one, in search engine results. A person is looking for a new dentist. He goes to his laptop, types his city and “dentist” into ...

Mako templates in Google App Engine: seems to work for me

For some reason which I can’t really articulate, I’m not a huge fan of Django templating. I’d actually prefer to use Genshi with Google App Engine, but I need to wait until all the kinks are ironed out, since as far as I can tell it’s not quite working painlessly yet. Another templating option is Mako, which I’ve barely used, but I still prefer to Django templates. One nice thing about Mako: it’s faster than most Python templating engines out there. So, here’s a quickie on how I got Mako working with Google App Engine. It wasn’t tricky at all, but I thought I’d document it anyway.
Checkout Mako from SVN and copy the directory mako/lib/mako to the path of your application, eg, on Linux:
$ cp -r mako/lib/mako myapp
(where myapp is the dir...

One of the great things about the Firefox browser is its ability to add functionality via plug-ins. There are zillions of excellent plug-ins available for Firefox, and one of my favorites is Googlepedia, a mashup between Google and the Wikipedia.Googlepedia modifies the behavior of the little Google search box in the upper right hand corner of the Firefox window. When you type in a search phrase such as "rickets", the result comes back in a split window. On the left hand side of the split is the usual Google result for rickets. The right hand side of the split window shows the Wikipedia result for rickets.Since the answers I need are often on the first page of Wikipedia, Googlepedia saves me the trouble of clicking through there for quite a few of my searches.
Recently I wrote about PubReMiner, an online application designed to help you search PubMed. Now I present a similar and even more powerful application named GoPubMed.

When you search PubMed the conventional way, via the Entrez system, two things happen. First your query is translated with identification of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and secondly this translated query is matched with words from all the abstracts. The second part is performed by term matching, which ultimately means that keyword synonyms are not used in the search. This way you can lose a lot of important articles. Finally, found abstracts are listed in the reverse chronological order. In most of the cases this is not what you want, and you are forced to manually go through all the abstracts to find those...

I updated ResolveRef last night and checked in the most current sourcecode to svn at Google Code.
New features include:

Suggest/autocomplete for journal title field, using the journal title lists provided by PubMed.
A “Verify” button. Allows a ResolveRef URL to be constructed with the web form and verified as working and valid without actually forwarding the user to the article.
Some bugfixes (handled the case where there is no DOI in the PubMed record, handled network timeouts to PubMed)
Refreshed visuals
Disqus comments box for feedback

In the interest of just getting something working quickly, I implemented the suggest feature in the laziest, possibly most RAM and CPU hungry way possible (the “JQuery Suggest” code queries the web app with substrings as you typ...

One of the nice features of Google App Engine is you can easily view logs for your application to quickly see requests generating errors. Browsing the logs of ResolveRef, I’ve been able to identify an few classes of query which for one reason or another, weren’t working.

Firstly, there is the “just testing and don’t actually have a citation on hand to key-in” class of users, that tried requests something like:
/ref/xx/2007//
Not much sympathy here … it’s pretty much like dialing a random phone number and hoping it someone will pick up.
Then there is a class of users who appear to have sensible intentions, but provide incomplete ResolveRef URLs, eg:
/ref/Organic%20Letters/2000//
Maybe I poorly described ResolveRef in the initial announcement, maybe...

PubMed provides access to Medline, a premier bibliographic database that contains references to journal articles in the life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. It is available via the NCBI Entrez retrieval system, which was developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
PubMed is extremely popular among biomedical researchers, in part because it offers free access, contrary to other such search engines like Scopus and Web of Science. However, during the years I heard a lot of people complaining about PubMed. They do not like its interface and are not satisfied with search results it provides. A lot of these people never gave any thought about PubMed, nor d...

If you invest in a website, how will the right people find it? The Internet is enormous, with information available to people across the globe. Your audience, your target market, consists of a little piece of the globe, most likely. To ensure that your site is found by search engines, you need to begin with good keywords. Implementing those keywords in a well thought out, thorough SEO strategy will improve your site’s potential for being found by the right people.

Keywords are the words that your search engine specialists will use in the back-end structure of your website. They should also show up in your website copy (art doesn’t count) in strategic locations. The number of times words are used, combined with their location, links, and the rest of the content on a page, affe...

About two weeks ago, tipped off by Neil, I heard about Google App Engine. I managed to get a beta account, and I’ve finally had a chance to do something (hopefully) useful with it.
In the absence of any quickly achievable ideas for a bioinformatics app, I ported over the OpenRef application I wrote on top of TurboGears a few months back.
Just like the original, the new app, ResolveRef, is essentially a RESTful way of doing PubMed queries.

A query like:
http://resolveref.appspot.com/ref/journal/year/volume/page
or when there is no volume number, like:
http://resolveref.appspot.com/ref/journal/year/page
will query PubMed and forward you to the DOI. Usually this means you will be forwarded to the electronic version of the article at the publishers site. The nice thing about these OpenR...

Via Twine I found out about Anatomy Lens. Here is how it is described

Anatomy Lens is a search engine that helps scientists hone in on PubMed articles most relevant to their research. Users enter anatomy terms, MeSH terms, and biological processes as search keywords. Anatomy Lens is more precise and has better recall than text search. For example, for the query Alzheimer’s, brain, neuron development, Anatomy Lens will match Alzheimer’s articles that discuss dendrite development in the hippocampus, whereas a standard text search will only find articles containing the queried keywords explicitly and might also find articles that are unrelated (such as articles about neuron development in the spine).

Sounds a bit like GoPubMed. All excited I click on Try It Now even though there...

Why is it important to list your website in web directories? Web directories were hot before the advent of search engines. Previously, people go to these directories to find quality websites, a potential referring traffic for web masters. However, these days, search engines made it easier for internet users to find what they’re looking for; directories were forgotten since then, sadly, even by webmasters.
SEO giants have long been stressing about the importance of building inbound links through web directories. Submitting your site to good and high-PR directories is one way of getting quality links that are highly valued by the search engines. Web directories are mainly human edited, thus a website must pass a strict criteria to get listed, hence quality links are only listed. These ...

Well, here’s a tip for those who were affected by PR drop:
I was Stumbling a while ago when I found this timely and interesting post from Yaro Starak of Entrepreneurs Journey, one of the successful netrepreneurs and probloggers, on how he has managed to get his page rank back to 6. When the big sweep happened, his blog went down to 3 from his original PR6.
Good for him he has now managed to get back his page rank. He added no follow to all paid links in his blog, then submitted a review request with Google at their Webmaster Tools then patiently waited for Google to give him his original PR. According to him, &#8220...

Dr. Cliff Arnall based his findings that January 21st will be the most depressing day on a special formula that he developed, which takes into account 3 factors; the weather, failed new years resolutions and consumer debt from holiday spending. However, a writer over at the Time website has findings of his own.
	Bill Tancer, a columnist at Time, believes that in order to get a better estimation of what the most depressing day is we only have to look to search engine behavior. Tancer’s logic is thus;
In the digital age we’re likely to turn to search engines just as often as we would confide in friends and medical professionals to gauge our psychological state. If we think we’re suffering from a real bout of the blues or a mental crisis, we’re likely to Google the sympto...

I’ve been reading about this SEO experiment from blogs like Selaplana, but it was only now that I have thought of joining after I have read success stories from participants. In fact, I am so late in joining this Pinay scandal SEO contest.
So why the title?
Cellphones nowadays become storage for several Pinay scandals, etc. In our class alone, more than 70% of my male classmates, so I believe this statistic reflects nationwide’s or even worldwide’s.
Just by searching Google alone for keywords “pinay scandal cellphone downloads”, it gives 15,400 and 158,000 “pinay scandal 3gp”.

Its more a science 2.0 platform than medical 2.0 platform but it has the potential to aggregate a strong professional content. It is in the Beta phase and its still lack enough content but this is the "magic problem" of many others medical/health 2.0 platforms who are strongly depends on the users traffic and involvement.Scirus topic pages :Its contain two majors section :1. Niche search engine ( There is already strong competition in this field)2.Platform for collaboration and sharing for scientis. Its based on the concept of open access combined with a Wikis like platform.Disadvantages :Without focusing ( search engine , community/sharing platform)Dont add something unique . Its looks like you see it or hear about it before.Advantage:Not so crowded yet (for scientists) (Source: Medical 2....

W e are living in the era of information. Information is knowledge, and knowledge is power. But how to find what you look for? That is why it is important to learn and to develop "digital literacy skills". Nowadays it is so common to find patients who look for answers to their health problems before they go to their primary doctor. With the information accessible to any person from their computers, lot of people without access to the health care system will try to cure themselves. But what type of answers are people finding? I think we have to spread awareness about this fact in the health care community. And that is why we have to learn how to search for information on internet. This presentation was made by Patricia Anderson. I highly recommend it. At the end of the post you will find mo...

I receive a lot of stuff in my email inbox!! Usually it is from sites that I have visited along the way, submitted my email and passively received updates along the way. Recently I have noticed the quality of the Psychiatric Times and Search Medica (all tied in together) newsletters that I receive. Psychiatric Times is supposedly the “most widely read publication in the field of psychiatry”. The website is a pretty comprehensive and regularly updated collection of articles, clinically relevant scales, CME links, activities and the usual share of advertising. Psychologists may find the site a little “psychiatric” for their liking, but the newsletter is beautifully formatted and likely to draw you in to one of the articles (even if the attachment article I just read l...

I wrote in the past about several medical search engines. This niche is "hot" these days.Everyone understand the power beyond ultimat medical search engine.Microsoft purchased Medstory . Google is deep inside the health 2.0 race also ( see my last post as an evidence and example for this).Curbside.MD is another example and I must say a good one.1. You can naturally phrase medical and clinical questions in the search bar. Its like asking your tutor or your coleague professional question.2. There are well defined sections . Including "Quick Consult" section for getting high level review results and "The Best Evidence " to get in- depth results and answers for your questions.3. There is an algorithm to get the "best hits" results and also results under the topics "clinical trials" and "visual ...

Readers involved with research are most likely aware of PubMed, a free resource that allows you to search “millions of bibliographic citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and preclinical sciences”. PubMed is very powerful and has a range of powerful search and notification features to make life easier for those who browse research regularly. Just recently however, I have become interested in a website/search engine called Gopubmed, a site that harnesses PubMed databases but arranges and guides your search in some nifty ways.
Kurt Thometz is a rare book dealer in New York and the father of 16-year-old Adam, who has autism. Thometz is profiled in the August 11th New York Times (subscription only) about his search for a home for his family of three and for his 400 cartons containing some 10,000 books. Jim Dwyer relates Thometz’s longstanding passion for books with Adam’s beginning to use words himself:
……By the age of 5, Adam had not yet spoken an intelligible word — not Mommy, not Daddy, not milk or no. Mr. Thometz read to him every night for two and a half years. With Adam in the crook of his arm, the weight of the day on him, Mr. Thometz was reading Thomas the Tank Engine for the 200th time.
“Henry the engine,” he read.
“Green,” Adam interrupted.
Yes: the proper name was Henry...

(Someone who will keep and manage ours web identity).Think about the negative influence in our sector:Is it will be more important to make all your efforts for being more professional or to make and establish your own web identity?).Think about the positive influence:The "viral marketing" phenomenon by the web can help break through traditio...

There are some changes in Gopubmed.org which makes it more useful to all-The first major change is that MeSHPubmed is now included in GoPubMed. Gene Ontology (GO) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) are now integrated into one application. This change was requested by many users and enables the joint search in molecular biology and medicine! Novel award winning text mining method for automated recognition of protein names. When i used for this for a few searches i found the results more useful and exactly what i was looking for and i am looking to use this more often.
Earlier this week, when I logged into my “MyNCBI” account, I got a message asking if I wanted to try out the beta site. Here is what I got when I clicked on “yes”. I actually don’t see the “leave beta” sign any more (maybe I clicked on it by mistake), but I presume others have seen the beta site as well.
The current beta is a test for “the accuracy and speed of the improved search engine”. Apparently, it is just step 1 of an effort to develop new features and capabilities later this year.

Update: Just read this on my NCBI news feed
Entrez Beta was successfully tested and will soon replace the production system. The invitation to preview the site was removed, however, users may go directly to the site & new URL...

Dean interviewed 4 medical bloggers interested in using search engines for medical queries: Kevin, Joshua, Graham and me.The fact that Google quoted Joshua proves 2 things:- Google listens. They want feedback.- Google became too big too fast and quality control suffers. They should have adhered to the the common practice of citing your sources.
