Evan Bayh and Congressional Comity

By Roger PilonToday Politico Arena asks:
Is Bayh’s lament on target?
My response:
The heart of Evan Bayh’s surprising announcement yesterday that he would not be seeking another term in the Senate was captured in three short sentences:
For some time, I have had a growing conviction that Congress is not operating as it should. There is too much partisanship and not enough progress — too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving. Even at a time of enormous challenge, the peoples’ business is not being done.
Beguilingly attractive as those sentiments may be, suggesting that some Golden Age of congressional comity has been lost, a candid look at our history shows that comity has been the exception, not the rule. And it’s occurred mainly w...

Why? Just ask Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN):
You can sort of see this coming. The savings from the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance industry, you can kind of count on that because they’re not very popular.
The hospitals are a different story. People, you know, like their hospitals; they tend to trust their hospitals. The hospitals have pledged big savings. I can easily forecast at some point in the not-too-distant future the hospitals coming in and saying, “You know what, this isn’t working exactly the way we expected. Please spare us from this,” and them getting a good hearing in [Congress].
The same thing goes for physicians.
And the pharmaceutical companies.
And the insurance industry. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Is Team Obama “FIGHTING OFF” the Clintons for payment of their campaign debt by channeling Senator James Webb for Vice President?
Another way to stop the Hillary-for-Veep speculation: Fire up some other speculation.
And so Obama announced this morning that he’d be campaigning in Virginia with Senator Jim Webb and former Governor Mark Warner.
Senator Webb has been touted as the Vice Presidential candidate who best augments the lack of military experience of Obama, comes from a possible pick-up state in the Electoral College, Virginia, and is a former Reagan Republican.
Flap thinks Webb is in the running and look at what Intrade says this morning:

As of this morning, Webb’s stock is up and Hillary’s is down. Obama has to balan...

Indiana Senator Evan Byah Says GOP May “Swift Boat” Obama Over Jeremiah Wright

Dan Balz of the Washington Post interviews Indiana Democrat Senator Evan Byah
Hillary Clinton surrogate and Superdelegate Indiana Senator Evan Byah today warns that the GOP may “Swift Boat” Barack Obama over the Jeremiah Wright Flap.
Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) today praised Sen. Barack Obama for denouncing his former pastor, but warned that Republicans will use the association to try to “Swift Boat” the Illinois senator if he becomes the Democratic presidential nominee this fall.
Bayh, who is supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, said he hoped other issues — the economy, gasoline prices, health care and the cost of college — will drive the decisions of most voters in Tuesday’s Indiana primary. Obama has struggled in other states to win...

After yesterday’s Pennsylvania Democrat primary election victory it is on to Indiana for Senator Hillary Clinton. She won’t win North Carolina which votes prior because of its large African American population that votes 95+ per cent for Obama but Indiana will be a battleground.
At present Hillary has a slight lead in the polls.
But, she has the endorsement and active campaign support of popular Indiana Senator Evan Bayh. Flap thinks should Clinton win the nomination that Bayh will be her Vice President choice.
The Democrat presidential primary electi...

Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., right, speaks to the crowd at Anderson High School’s gymnasium Thursday, March 20, 2008 as he and Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., campaign in Anderson, Ind.

With the deepening Democrat Party dilemma with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Hillary has resorted to an argument of electability of her candidacy in the Electoral College.
Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, who backs Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, proposed another gauge Sunday by which superdelegates might judge whether to support Mrs. Clinton or Senator Barack Obama.
He suggested that they consider the electoral votes of the states that each of them has won.
“So who carried the states with the most Electoral College votes is an important factor to con...

As the weekend draws to a close, this may be a good time to catch up on events and other items of interest. And for those with a keen interest in the ongoing controversy over antidepressants and suicidal thoughts among youngsters, we are told that the Fox News show, Hannity’s America, will take a look at how the issue is being tied to several school shootings. However, the segment doesn’t yet appear on the web site’s schedule, but if our info is correct, it would air at 9 pm EST.
Evan Bayh is a Democratic senator from Indiana. His wife, Susan Bayh, is something of a professional board member, earning more than $1 million annually in director fees at companies that make pharmaceuticals, operate radio stations, sell health insurance, offer online banking and distribute ing...
