Many Pharma companies are hesitant to use Facebook as a medium to communicate with their audience, and many fear it is because they will have additional worries concerning the FDA and adverse events of their drugs. Mashable recently set out and shared a few better ways for Pharma companies to communicate with their fans on Facebook while connecting with them at them at the same time.

Some of the tips:
- Know who is making the decisions about buying your product. For example, doctors are not likely to reference Facebook when searching about a drug. But for many Over the Counter drugs, consumers will look online and a Facebook page could be a great place to inform them about that drug.
- Use the Facebook page as a way to communicate, connect and listen to your co...

A blood coagulation test (prothrombin time test) that’s as easy to use as a home glucose meter and cheaper? Wow! Over 10% of all adverse drug events ending in a hospital stay are associated with blood thinners. Because of this, regular monitoring is recommended to ensure the desired effect. Unfortunately, the current technology is either costly or must be performed by qualified technicians.
Currently, there are several point-of-care tests on the market, but the cost of the consumable test strips make it more expensive than laboratory testing. However, the SmartStrip mimics “lab on a chip” technology but instead of fluidics, it’s based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) placed on a disposable test strip. The result is a low-cost test that can be performed in minute...

On Friday 13th May, Adrian Bertoli, Morten Hillgaard Bülow and I attended the University of Copenhagen Center for Healthy Aging (CEHA) retreat day at the DGI Congress Center here in Copenhagen and we have decided to bring our experiences of the day together in one blog post.
Lucy says:
Everyone involved in each of CEHA’s five programmes was required to participate and it was definitely a day of two halves. CEHA Managing Director Lene Juel Rasmussen introduced the proceedings and her talk was followed by short overviews given by each of the programme leaders. The morning was dominated by traditional PowerPoint based presentations used to display schematics, charts, diagrams and arrows that sometimes became overcomplicated and confusing. Then PhDs and postdoctoral researchers presen...

Imagine you’re a pharmaceutical company product manager and your specific product helps people with a chronic illness, or a cancer that can be managed by taking a pill or an injectable medicine over many years. You want to be part of the dialogue patients have with each other. You want to be part of the community. Facebook users, and other social media participants, are increasingly forming groups around health conditions, big and small. You want to be there, because, after all, your company has invested hundreds of millions of dollars developing the approved drug and hopes this medicine, and perhaps a successor, will be on the market for a long time.
This is an exciting time on the Internet and pharmaceutical product managers want to be part of health discussions. But it is fraught with...

After months of anticipation, the US Supreme Court yesterday ruled Matrixx Initiatives was incorrect to insist that only statistically significant adverse events are required to be reported to shareholders, and allowed investors to proceed with a long-simmering securities fraud claim. The move has significance for drugmakers and biotechs, which filed briefs supporting Matrixx over concerns adverse event disclosures can be easily misinterpreted and lead to more shareholder lawsuits.
Here’s the background: Matrixx Initiatives was sued for allegedly concealing side effect reports that its Zicam over-the-counter cold med caused people to lose their sense of smell, known as anosmia. By withholding the reports, shareholders argued Matrixx unfairly boosted the value of its stock. The Zicam ...

20 Reasons Why Virtual Conferences Are the Future

Conferences have long been a staple of the professional calendar. Now, after a recession that has slashed travel expenditure, the landscape for events is changing. Sophisticated digital platforms are enabling virtual environments that simulate the benefits of real events, and attendees are beginning to shift to accessing subject matter experts and industry networking online.
But can the digital environment really displace brick and mortar events, where eye to eye meetings and chance connections can justify the often costly registration fees and travel costs? In organizations where hundreds of executives and professionals attend several conferences a year at $1,000 or more each in total cost, a virtual conference at $500 can be attractive.
Making virtual connections at an online conference ...

Each year, adverse drug events cost an estimated $2 billion a year to treat. So, how can hospitals achieve the right medication, right dose, right patient, right time, and right route? According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, barcoding technology may be the answer.
Over the last few months, I’ve interviewed a long list of hospital CFOs with the goal of determining how they prioritize their capital spending. Several years ago when I made the same series of interviews, ROI was the determining factor. Now, as summed up by Debbie Schimerowski, CFO at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, IL, “Which project takes precedence depends on multiple factors. Like a lot of hospitals, we have many assets that are at the end of their life cycle right now because mo...

Some of these adverse EMR events might include: software problems, inadequate user training, security breaches and near-misses. Here’s a short quote from the press release about the new website:
Using a standardized online format, EHRevent will collect reports from physicians and other health care providers who use EHRs, and create reports that medical societies, professional liability carriers and government agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will use to help educate providers on the potential challenges that EHR systems may bring.
The form breaks out the EHR safety events into 4 categories:

The numerous problems are so bad - there were violations concerning field reports, unapproved new drugs and adverse event reporting - that the FDA issued an import alert, which means products made at the main Claris facility in India are not allowed in the US (you can read more about Claris here).
In one instance cited, the FDA berated Claris for its chutzpah. One customer, Sagent Pharmaceuticals, complained that IV bags had fungus, although there were no lea...

We transform people’s lives.” — AIDS Action Committee President & CEO Rebecca Haag, quoting Maya Angelou, at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the AIDS Action Committee
A panel of five front-line staffers talking about their work with clients anchored the Annual Meeting of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts at the agency’s Jackson Square headquarters Nov. 4.
Mark Forry, a staffer at The MALE Center, told the story of a young, homeless African American man in his early 20s who first came to The MALE Center because it was cold outside. “Literally, he came in only because he wanted to get warm,” Fo...

Anyone catch the Oprah Winfrey show yesterday? Tyler Perry was on. I was running around checking my computer, looking at my iPhone and cleaning up with the show running in the background. When I finally sat down to watch, I was moved by what I saw.
Perry revealed the pain and struggle he endured from his traumatic childhood. While it was heartbreaking and difficult to watch, what he said was also hopeful. He talked about forgiveness, his ability to use writing as his escape and how he was able to empower himself and the little boy he lost when he was abused. It’s a touching piece. One that reminded me of the impact inspiring people can have on us and the importance of support through times of adversity.
It’s a hope we all have for you as well. That you’ll read these posts...

In 2000, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project premiered “The Laramie Project,” a three-act play based on interviews with people who lived in the town where gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was murdered in 1998. The words of law enforcement officials, people affiliated with the University of Wyoming, medical personnel (who learned of Shepard’s HIV-positive status after the barely-alive young man was brought to the hospital), as well as gay and straight citizens of the town were crafted together with Tectonic members’ journal entries and public records to dissect the tragic event and its impact on a family, a town, a college community, a theater company and the nation.
As the 10th anniversary of the murder approached, Tectonic members returned...

It is important to look at the platforms your audience is engaging on and how they are approaching the topics they are talking about.
One of our basic aims here at Medical Museion is to put current trends in biomedicine in a longer historical perspective. Last Friday, we got yet another opportunity for doing this, when the new Core Facility for Integrated Microscopy at the Faculty of Health Sciences opened together with an international research symposium on the state-of-the-art of microscopy.
In the hallway outside the symposium room, we displayed a selection of six of our most beautiful old microscopes that represent the development from early simple single lenses to end of the 19th century compound microscopes. The aim was to make the symposium participants better appreciate the beauty of early microscopes and the craftsmanship that has gone into constructing them.
During the lunch break, I had a chat with Peter Even...

We’re just a few weeks away from Harbor to the Bay (H2B) 2010, an AIDS benefit bike ride from Boston to Provincetown, supporting HIV/AIDS organization in Massachusetts. H2B is an all volunteer operation, meaning 100% of the money raised through H2B goes back to its beneficiary organizations, including AIDS Action. This year’s goal for the ride is $400,000. You can help H2B reach its goal and support AIDS Action in the process by making a donation and sharing this blog post with your friends. Our 2,500 clients and the thousands of people we help prevent becoming infected with HIV each year will greatly appreciate it.
The passion of our riders inspires us each year, especially our new riders taking on a major course like this for the first time. Read why Nina (pictured) dec...

Medial Marketing and Media notes that while the overall call rates for the Pharma industry are decreasing, Novartis has increased their sales calls in the first half of 2010 by 7% compared to 2009. The industry overall has seen a 1% drop in sales calls.Jason Fox, associate director of syndicated analytics at SDI, stated:“With the number of pharmaceutical sales reps being scaled back dramatically over the last few years, it's no surprise that sales calls across the industry are also declining. However, companies with new drugs or newly approved indications for existing drugs need to get the information into the hands of physicians and other practitioners, and in-person calls are still the most popular type of promotion, outside of product sampling.” (Source: ePharma Summit)

Prior to the conference there were a couple of topics related to chemistry on the web which I’ve been meaning to write about. Better late than never I guess.
The first one is Chemicalize, a public website for adding chemical resolution to web browsing, chemical names and chemical structure files. The service “allows you to browse the web and see structures for chemical names (text) identified in the web page. For each chemical structure image generated, you can link through to predicted data from the structure. The service is free and will be useful to anyone wishing to add chemical structures and data to their web browsing experience.”

Fierce Pharma looks at how many consumers are tuning out Pharma's traditional approach to marketing, and how they need to embrace a full circle marketing campaign. Digital marketing is where Pharma needs to turn next. Many companies are scared to embrace this new form of marketing, and the FDA isn't making things easier, as they still haven't issued formal guidelines as to what is and isn't allowed when marketing to Pharma individuals. Fierce Pharma pointed out that KevinMD also wrote a post looking at this topic in-depth. What do you think? how long will it be before Pharma fully embraces digital and integrates that marketing with their other TV and Print campaigns? (Source: ePharma Summit)

In a recent article at Pharma Kinnex, they discuss how to reach doctors that are increasingly becoming no-see doctors. This promotes the need for a multi-channel approach to letting those doctors know about your products. While they will not see sales reps, there are multiple other ways to reach them, all allowing for the same voice and information to be passed concerning the drug you are letting the doctor know about. According to the article: By combining faxes, direct mail, e-communications and teledetailing along with your sales force call plan, promotional dinner meetings and conference exhibits you can greatly extend your reach and frequency.
One woman’s courageous response to a devastating sentinel event:
My mother was critically burned during surgery in December 2002 when a topical solution was not allowed to dry before the doctor used a cauterizing tool.
The entire experience was awful, but the worst realization for me was that nobody would listen. No one apologized, no one showed much emotion at all. All I heard was “mistakes happen.” I tried to find out where I could report the event, but discovered that often, I simply wasn’t believed.
Before she died, my mother asked me to make sure that something like this never happens to another human being.

Here’s another new example of a apparently fruitfull collaboration between art and biomedicine – an opera called The Lion’s Face exploring Altzheimer’s disease and dementia. This time even with a public engagement with science twist. As Felicity Callard – who were involved in the production of the opera, and who just advertised it on the Neuroscience and Society mailing list – describes:
Fundamental to the development of the opera was the sustained involvement of patients, healthcare staff, family members, as well as basic & clinical researchers. The librettist & composer visited the biomarkers labs, talked extensively to the various stakeholders and witnessed various practices of dementia care.
The opera premiered at the Brighton Festival in May...

Whether or not you survive a cardiac event could depend on where you are. Neighborhoods whose residents are poorer, less educated, and have more black residents yield higher death rates as a result of cardiac incidents. When researchers studied areas in Georgia, people who had a heart attack in Fulton County (Atlanta area) were up to three times more likely to die – and less likely to have bystanders perform CPR – than those who suffered heart attacks in other Georgia counties.
Because heart disease is the number one killer of American women, it’s troubling to know that some deaths could be avoided if the victim walks down a different street. It’s impractical to avoid certain areas because there’s a chance you’ll have a heart attack while you&#...

Event Data Recorders: They’re Not Just for Safety

By Jim HarperIn my recent testimony before the House Commerce Committee on a proposal to require event data recorders in all new cars sold in the United States, I pointed out that the mandate would go far beyond what is needed to ensure safety. Indeed, the cost of EDRs raises the prices of new cars, marginally reducing the pool of used cars and keeping lower income drivers in older used cars which are less safe.
The demand for EDRs in all cars, collecting and transmitting data about all crashes, suggests that something more than statistically relevant safety data is what advocates of this mandate want. I put a finer point on these issues today in answers to questions propounded to me after the hearing.
The proposed EDR mandate includes controls on the use of EDR information, a nominal pr...

By Jim HarperI was pleased last week to testify in Congress about a draft bill that would mandate “event data recorders” in all new cars. Automobile black boxes or “EDRs” are an issue that found me a few years ago when I commented on their privacy consequences to a newspaper and heard from concerned drivers across the country.
My testimony to the House Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection had three main themes:
1) The Constitution doesn’t give Congress authority to design automobiles or their safety features;
2) Only a relevant sample of crash data is needed to improve auto safety—overspending on a 100% EDR mandate will keep the poor in older, more dangerous cars and undermine auto safety for that cohort; an...

I haven’t written a lot about the “mad pride” movement in the world, because frankly I don’t know what to make of it. I’ve lived my entire life seeing people I love devastated by the effects of mental illness, including a good friend who took his own life because of his deep depression. Contrast that with people who have been forcibly medicated, only to find when they stopped the medication, they could get better on their own, and I’m left scratching my head.
Of course, these are just two anecdotes out of the millions of stories we live and breathe about mental illness. To me, there is no “right answer” about the One True Path to find enlightenment or to relieve one’s suffering from mental illness.
So when I read an article in the Natio...

Someone has to talk to this company about ergonomic engineering:What looks like a bulky female hygiene product is actually a health monitor that hooks up to an iPhone via Bluetooth, sending bodily information such as heart rates to the compatible app. It's not on sale yet, with Proteus' Raisin sensor only just being passed through the FDA, but it's another step for the iPhone into the operating room, after Apple showed off the Lifescan app by Johnson & Johnson at last year's WWDC, which works alongside a wireless glucose meter. Diabetes can analyze the glucose levels in their blood, with the information being sent to the iPhone app over Bluetooth. To their engineers: Any color but white or light blue, okay?-WesMusings of a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist. The Congress (which is done in conjunction with the Coney Island Museum) includes panels examining the collecting of curiosities, the history of ethnographic display and the interface of spectacle and education in 19th and 20th century amusements, and the politics of bodily display in the amusement parks, museums, and fairs of the Western world. It also features nightly lectures on topics as the taxidermy of a Victorian curiosity-collector,...

The Hybrid Art Science Networking Association, which is led by Leeds-based artist Paul Digby and Sheffield-based scientist and artist Lizz Tuckerman, enables artists and scientists of all disciplines to meet, and encourages cross-disciplinary interaction. It is supported by Arts Council England, Yorkshire.
The Hybrid Art and Science Exhibition was held in various locations around Sheffield. My drawing was part of a collection of work on display at the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery.
The piece selected for the exhibition is called ‘Bacteria Drawing’ and was made in May 2009. The drawing is a collaborative piece and is constructed from 22 drawings which form one large piece. It is about 170 cm in height, approximately150 cm approx wide and spreads about 170 cm along the floo...

We have tried many different ways of marketing our exhbitions to the prospective audience (posters, direct-mails, postcards, you name it) — with varying success. One of the problems with posters and postcards is the one-way communication; if people want more information, they have to make an extra effort.
In connection with the new extra-mural exhibition ‘Healthy Aging: A Lifespan Approach’ that opened two weeks ago in ther main building of the Faculty of Health Sciences (see here). we tried out a more personal way to get in contact with our prospective audience.
The idea was to give students and staff at the University’s Southern Campus (Faculty of Humanities) and the Faculty of Health Sciences an opportunity to put a human face on Medical Museion. So ...

Science Online 2010 – Where are the geeks?

My obvious biases are going to come out in this post, but it needs to be written. Bora and Anton organize this great conference every January that allows many people to get together to discuss science on the web. As always, I quite enjoyed the event, mostly cause of the social interactions, and some excellent sessions. This year I got to finally meet in person Pawel Szczesny, Steve Koch, Dr. Kiki, and Michael Habib (I am sure I’ve missed someone). Jonathan Eisen has a great post (and this funny one) about the event.
Having said that, I find something troubling. There are far too many sessions on journalism and policy, and far too little on doing science and even less on the “developer” side of things. So consider this post a call to action. Next year, we should get better...

I will be speaking at the 14th event of the Mobile Monday chapter in Amsterdam titled Mobile Health. This event will take place on 25th of January with doors opening at 3pm and presentations running until 7pm with a half hour break. Even if you cannot be there, be sure to check out the livestream or watch all videos, talks and presentations afterward on MoMo Amsterdam website. You do not want to miss this, because some extraordinary people will take part in this event. I myself will be talking about mobile technology from a doctor’s standpoint, and try to give an overview of how this technology has influenced the way we treat patients today.

…I couldn’t just say Happy Christmas could I? It’s not as if it’s scientifically possible to reconcile a belief in any archaic mythology with observational data concerning the nature of reality. Regardless, lacking such a belief (and posting the big “A”) does not preclude a positive morality, a philanthropic stance, an altruistic attitude…or simply having a good time with your friends and family. Enjoy the holiday whatever your beliefs.

One heavily researched area within psychology is couples’ and marital communication. How a couple chooses to communicate — especially during a conflict — affects all sorts of things in the relationship: stress, relationship health, intimacy, even each person’s health. As Gouin et al. (2009) note in a summary of our existing research on this issue:

Individuals reporting lower marital satisfaction experienced more non-specific physical illness symptoms over a 4-year period than individuals with higher marital satisfaction. Among healthy women, lower marital satisfaction was also associated with a more rapid progression of carotid atherosclerosis. Furthermore, women who were initially dissatisfied in their marital relationship were more likely to develop metabolic syn...

We here at Medical Museion are always on the outlook for new and interesting institutional experiments to learn from. This week’s announcement of up-coming events at OBSERVATORY is inspirational:
The Culture of Curiosity is everywhere these days. Wunderkammern appear in popular art, cutting-edge fashion, film, books and museum exhibitions. This aesthetic has proved surprisingly durable and popular for over 600 years. From temple to home to museum, the Culture of Curiosity continues to exert an irresistible pull on our collective psyches, and it shows no signs of falling from favor any time soon.
I guess our (formerly) own Camilla — who has specialised in how the practice of the Wunderkammer can be transferred to present-day museum practice — couldn’t have said it be...

I just returned from a hectic trip to New York City. The highlight of that trip, and the primary purpose, was Hadoop World. I had always planned to be there, and had registered a long time ago, but ended up giving a talk on Hadoop for Bioinformatics (slides below).
Hadoop for Bioinformatics

Much of the discussions I had were work related, so I won’t talk about them. What I would like to talk about were some general trends that are of relevance to the life science informatics community. It’s pretty clear to me that Hadoop is here to stay. It’s not just the number of people using Hadoop, or the size of the data sets, but rather the variety of data-intensive computing that people are doing, and the thriving ecosystem. Those two te...

If you haven’t checked into the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program, time is not on your side! The program’s Facebook page says that the HCBBP is: “A growing national movement of dentists who buy or collect Halloween candy from kids and then ship the treats to support our troops overseas.”
Your dental office has a sensational opportunity to get involved with your local community, which is great for marketing, and it also shows your business’s desire to give back to the community and nation. Keep in mind, the popular marketing trend of Generation G focuses on generosity, giving, and gratitude. HCBBP fits that bill to a T.
History of the program…
Dr. Chris Kammer started the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program in 2006 when his PR company asked him about an innovative idea for an Octob...

MS Events: They’re Good for What Ails You

This past weekend was my local chapter of the National MS Society’s Bike MS event. Nearly 2000 cyclists, aged from single digits to octogenarians, got on their bicycles and road a beautiful course, ranging from 25 to 100 miles, for two days.
It was a beautiful late summer weekend. The riders had wicked fun. A large amount of money (looks like we’ll hit the $1.6millon goal) was raised for multiple sclerosis. But there was more…
Every time I attend one of these “MS Events,” be it a walk, a luncheon, gala dinner, an educational program, or what have you, I feel better!
Not that my MS symptoms feel better, in fact sometimes the symptoms get worse for a short time owing to the extra “stuff” I do. I walk more than I normally do, I stand to chat for longer periods, I’m emo...

Yesterday, U.S. President Barack Obama designated September 2009 as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month helps educate women and men about the importance of knowing the early warning signs and symptoms of the disease, scheduling routine doctor visits, and continuing robust scientific research.

September is Healthbolt Book Month…

I’ve been looking around my study and suddenly realized that I am in danger of being overrun with books that have been sent for review. I’ve ready many of them, some even more than once, but somehow haven’t managed to find time to post reviews about them.
Bad management on my part. I figure it’s time to get my act together and review the books that are piling up in the bookcase, on the desk, and on the floor.

September is therefore designated Healthbolt Book Month, with a new book review everyday until I run out of books or words.

Just after I moved to Seattle after over five years in San Diego (the longest I’ve ever stayed in one place for a stretch), I got a chance to attend an event that convinced me that I had made the correct decision. Ignite Seattle was fun, geeky, creative and had great energy and has since become a key attraction at many a geek event. The two chances I have had to speak there were among the most fun experiences of my life. Due to travel, I missed the last Ignite Seattle, but this time I plan to be there, especially since I was lucky enough to get another opportunity to speak.
Here’s the Title and Abstract that I submitted

Boston 2014, the group organizing the city’s bid for Gay Games IX, is hosting a Kick-Off Rally at The Estate, a popular nightclub at 1 Boylston Place, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm on Thursday, August 6th. The Gay Games are the LGBT community’s Olympics, traveling to different locations from one Games to the next. Also contending for the 2014 spot are Cleveland and DC. The decision will be made in less than 3 months!
AIDS Action is encouraging you to participate in the Kick-Off Rally and otherwise help bring the Gay Games to Boston for a number of reasons. A major sporting event, the Games will boost the local economy, bringing tourist dollars in from far and wide — always a good thing, especially in tough economic times.
The Games also greatly support people living with HIV/AIDS...

One of pharma's biggest concerns with social media is adverse event (AE) reporting. But for an AE to be reportable, it must meet the four criteria: 1) an identifiable patient, 2) an identifiable reporter, 3) a suspect drug, and 4) the side effect. Most often online, #1 and #2 aren’t met. Last year, Nielsen even produced a report quantifying this.

To handle AE reporting responsibly, companies that have created a presence in a social media property -- such as JnJ's Health YouTube Channel -- monitor their comments before posting in order to route any AEs appropriately. Some properties, like Facebook, don't allow for monitoring of comments before posting to the Wall, so companies may choose to turn off that feature. Not great for engaging with their audience, but it does avoid the risk.

I have been invited to give a Masterworks talk on Data Challenges in Genomics for Supercomputing 09. I would like to dive into the details about the technical and scientific challenges of high throughput genomics, from microarrays to next gen sequencing and beyond and how we need to be manage these data more efficiently. While part of my talk will be about my day job, I want it to be informed by challenges we face today and will face tomorrow as a scientific community. So to try and capture many of these challenges and gather facts and information I have started a wiki page which I have made public. Please feel free to add to that page with ideas and topics that interest you. To do so, you will have to login as user sc09 and password computing.
Obama’s new drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, says it is time to move away from the “war” rhetoric surrounding federal drug policy. Since Kerlikowske has just assumed office, this is exactly the right thing to do — set a whole new tone from the militarized approach we have seen over the past 20-30 years.
Drug abuse is a problem that must be dealt with, but we don’t need to send troops to Latin America, we don’t need former generals like Barry McCaffrey to oversee drug policy, and we don’t need police officers conducting raids on American homes with machine guns and flash bang grenades.
The political climate on drug policy is shifting. Republican governors like Arnold Schwarzenegger are calling for a...

White House Czar Calls for End to ‘War on Drugs’

This morning in The Wall Street Journal:
The Obama administration’s new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting “a war on drugs,” a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.
…Gil Kerlikowske, the new White House drug czar, signaled Wednesday his openness to rethinking the government’s approach to fighting drug use.
Mr. Kerlikowske’s comments are a signal that the Obama administration is set to follow a more moderate — and likely more controversial — stance on the nation’s drug problems.
…The Obama administration is likely to deal with drugs as a matter of public health rather than criminal justice alone, with treatment’s role gr...

My baby is sick. Possibly sick from the vaccine intended to protect her from illness. And I am sick at heart. You see, I took her in for her 9-month well baby visit three days ago. At that time, she received two vaccinations: DTaP and Rotavirus. Those of you really savvy about vaccinations might see the problem already. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the rotavirus vaccine is not recommended after the baby reaches the age of 32 weeks (about 8 months). RotaTeq rotavirus vaccineMy baby was overdue for her third and final dose of RotaTeq. I had put it off because we were on the waiting list for the Hib vaccine, which is in short supply and must be rationed out by pediatricians. In hindsight I realize I should have proceeded on schedule with my daughter’s other vaccinations, a...

Unless you are living in the back of beyond, with no internet, television, or newspaper access, you would have heard about the recent outbreak of swine flu in Mexico. This morning, when I collected the newspaper from the gate, I discovered it’s even made it’s way to New Zealand (via airline passengers).
So it’s best not to assume that because it seems to have originated in Mexico, it would stay only in Mexico. Everyone needs to be aware of and prepared to deal with the possibility that it could arrive in their corner of the world.
Here’s the best way to keep up to date of what’s happening…
1. Learn key facts about Swine Flu and what to do to protect yourself can be found at the Center for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) website. Traveler’s s...

To mark Parkinson’s Awareness Week (April 20-26th) in the United Kingdom (England, Wales, and Scotland) the Parkinson’s Disease Society has launched a nationwide appeal to get people to pledge to donate their brains for Parkinson’s research.
Wanted: A Few Good Brains
Seems that they are running a little low on this organ and without it, are unable to pursue necessary research to help advance Parkinson’s Disease treatments and maybe even find a cure.
But getting people to donate their brains isn’t as easy as getting them to donate other organs. A survey recently commissioned by the Parkinson’s Disease Society has shown that while over 60% are comfortable with donating a heart or a kidney, only 7% are comfortable with donating a brain.
It’s hoped that this brain donation ...

National Review’s Mark Hemingway quoted Ilya Shapiro about the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal’s recent decision on gun laws. He also posted David Boaz’s reaction to the New York Times blog that stated that Cato has been “remarkably silent on bailouts.”

QandO’s Michael Wade offered his own thoughts on the New York Times blogger who said Cato’s voice against bailouts has not met her “expectations of adequate noise.”

Blogging about high-speed rail, The Reason Foundation’s Samuel Staley cited Randal O’Toole’s study, High-Speed Rail: The Wrong Road for America.

Cato University, the Cato Institute’s premier educational event of the year, is right around the corner!
On June 26-31 in Rancho Bernardo, California, Cato University will bring together outstanding faculty and participants from across the country to discuss how the state has expanded during times of crises; the threats to liberty, privacy, and independence, as the rush for government-imposed solutions (and, hence, power) increases in pace; and, what can be done to restrain – or reverse – its growth.
This year’s topic: Economic Crisis, War, and the Rise of the State.
We’ve created a special banner (below) for this year’s Cato University – and hope you’ll take an opportunity to use the image to spread the word about this year’s program to friends, ...

I’m excited to announce that I will be live-blogging tomorrow’s episode of “Eleventh Hour” on CBS. Airtime is Thursday Dec 22, 10PM EST/9PM CST. I was originally contacted by the show’s PR firm in December to do an episode then but holidays and schedule postponed it to this month. In the interim, I’ve taken advantage of that time to catch up on almost half the season’s 10 episodes and I can honestly recommend the show to anyone who appreciates science, mystery and a touch of the unknown. I can honestly say that this is the first show to have come along in the spirit of The X-Files that does the genre justice (and some of you know about my rather public involvement with that show in the day…hehe)
The setup is that I’m brought in as the s...

One of my favorite sessions at ScienceOnline’09 was the one on Semantic Web in Science moderated by John Wilbanks. In some ways this was the most traditional session at the event, but it worked, since John brings a level of credibility to the subject few can, with this background in science, technology and policy. There was a lot of Q&A related to the Semantic Web in general and discussions around policy. But the meat for me was John’s talk itself. I believe that John has probably done the best job of articulating the role of the public domain for scientific data, and he brought a new twist to it in this talk, at least the first time I’ve heard someone talk about data like this. That was the concept of download, mirror, fork, which makes so much sense, that I am mad t...

After a hectic day and a half at ScienceOnline’09, I could do with a quick trip home, but well, this gives me the opportunity to write some stuff down.
This years conference was bigger than the previous one I attended, and more engaging. Great sessions, often overlapping, a good set of people and some interesting discussion. As someone pointed out, we don’t often achieve anything at events like this, but it’s a great place to set an agenda, meet people and see how a field has progressed. Open Notebook Science is a key one, with Jean-Claude and co showing steady progress. The discussion on Impact Factors might not have come to any solid conclusions,...

Image via WikipediaYesterday, I changed an opinion. Andrew Su led a session at ScienceOnline’09 on using wikis for annotation, specifically around the Genes Wiki project. In the past I have been somewhat skeptical about using Wikipedia as the host for such an effort. I am not so sure about that skepticism anymore, especially if one looks at how you might find that page as a casual user. Let’s say you are looking for a specific gene and type that name into Google, lets say Sonic Hedgehog. Guess what, one of the top 3 hits is the Genes Wiki page for that gene. That is something you just cannot get for a dedicated platform and is one of the negatives some of the other, more topic specific wikis suffer from. Also, if you think about Wikipedia as a general resource, then the way the...

Image by mndoci via FlickrThis weekend, I head to RTP for ScienceOnline’09, for what seems to be becoming an annual ritual. The program this year seems more diverse and interesting than in the past as well, with a number on threads around the opportunities, challenges and limitations of what the web provides to scientists these days. I look at the sessions at ScienceOnline as a series of roundtables. While topics are set in advance, the idea is to have open discussion on a number of topics and not try and keep things rigid. Moderators can set the agenda up front, but as one myself, I primarily see the role of a moderator as that of keeping things semi-organized and essentially to get the ball rolling. I am lucky enough to moderate not one, but two sessions with Cameron Neylon, whom I...

I mentioned in the Healthbolt Holiday Gift Guide that it looked like the silly season was upon us - a time when everyone gets carried away buying presents for the nearest and dearest.
Well, Healthbolt is going to go one better and start giving away a present everyday for the month of December.
“Why?” you say.
“Why Not?” I reply.
Thanks to some very generous and kind people out in there in cyberspace, I have put together a collection of mainly fitness goodies – DVDs and books, sneakers and socks, gadgets and toys- to giveaway.
Here’s the plan…
- Every evening for the next 31 days, there will be a new giveaway announced.
- enter by leaving a comment and your email address. Entry will be disqualified without email.
- each giveaway will run for 7 days.
- winner will be contacted ...

Yesterday was a blast. Chris Lasher and Co pulled out the red carpet and were wonderful hosts. I was also able to take part in some very interesting discussions on everything from cloud computing to social networks with graduate students and faculty alike.
I really have no idea how the talk went. It was a new talk, something I hope to extend over the coming months as I spend more time fleshing out this idea that big science, data-driven science needs to be built upon collective intelligence on the fabric of the World Wide Web. But the discussion afterwards and later at dinner, etc convince me that there is hope as the grad students of today get...

Next week, I head to Virgina Tech to give a talk as part of the Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (GBCB) guest lecture series. I think Chris Lasher needs a stern talking to about his speaker choices, but it gets me to talk science so can’t really complain.
The topic of my talk is Science Big. Science Connected. I am still working through the slides, but the talk is an extension of many of the things I talk about here at bbgm. In my head that is best represented as Big data and the networked future of science
But that’s not what I wanted to really talk about. The best part about the whole thing is the flyer that Chris and Co came up with.

From the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) comes Significant Event Audit Guidance for Primary Care Teams and A quick guide to conducting an Significant Event Audit which enables primary care teams to learn from patient safety incidents and ‘near misses’. The technique was established in the mid-1990s as an effective quality assurance method in general practice, with the aim of improving patients’ experience, care and outcomes, and to identify changes that might improve future care and was incorporated into the Quality and Outcomes Framework in 2004, as part of the new General Medical Services contract requirements.

Illusionist David Blaine has been hanging around, upside down for the past couple of days. You can find him at the swinging in the breeze above the Wollmann ice rink in Central Park, New York.
Its a stunt that requires a great deal of endurance, focus, and might I add, stupidity.

Medical, hanging up side down for long periods of time is simply not a good idea. It can mess with the heart and cause the blood pressure to rise. There’s increased risk of brain haemorrhage, seizures, and blindness because of all the blood pooling in the brain and skull. It can also cause breathing problems - with the diaphragm upside down, the intestines will be exerting pressure on the lungs, making breathing more difficult. And of course, there’s less blood, and therefore oxygen, going to the le...

No, contrary to popular belief no aliens are involved in my longest blog silence in a long time. Thanks to a hectic road trip, mostly at Web 2.0 Expo, haven’t had much of a chance to write about anything.
In the meantime, the internet stayed up, the financial markets are in a mess, AWS made a huge announcement, and Tim O’Reilly gave a rather though provoking talk that I have to blog about soon.
Oh, and the new Zemanta is sweet. Got a chance to meet Jure this week too :).

At 8:00 EST, when the show begins simultaneously across all networks, log into the Pink Ribbon Review and have a real-time conversation with Karen Lynch about the event – real time, live, as it happens. She’ll have live coverage and commentary about the event — and you can add your two cents, too!
Her “live” blog will be displayed in a viewer window on the main Pink Ribbon Review website (thanks to software provided by CoveritLive). It’s like instant messaging — except you don’t need a user name or password — and you can watch the conversation, view photos, send in comments, or participate in polls. There’s no downloading … just have her website loaded at 8:00 EST and watch the magic unfold.

Why does he make me feel this way?
What was going through my mother’s head when said such hurtful things to me?
Can’t my boss tell that his words cut me down and make me feel so small?
These are examples of our thinking sometimes when we feel hurt, ashamed, or angry – that the other person or some external event is making us feel the way we do. But is it? Can someone else make us feel a certain way? Can an event in our life directly cause us to feel a specific way?
Michael Edelstein, in his book Three Minute Therapy, argues the line of cognitive-behaviorists and rational emotive therapists have argued for decades. External events and people cannot make us feel any one certain way, even though it often seems that way.
We enter into every situation with certain beliefs or...

I am not at BioBarCamp. Couldn’t make it for various reasons, so I missed out on meeting a whole bunch of cool folks. Luckily we do live in the world of new media and instant community. While, I haven’t been able to follow every discussion, between Twitter, Cameron’s Mogulus feed and Friendfeed, I was almost there.
Lots of people who should take a bow, but none more so that Attila Csordás. I owe you one my friend. Given the success of this event and SciBarCamp, there are now four events on the science geek calendar that are going to be firmly circled in my calendar for next year, the others being the Scienceblogging Conference, now renamed ScienceOnline (a good change) and Scifoo. I hope to make at least three of them.

You’ve heard of the Tour de France but I bet you haven’t heard of the Tour de Donut.
Yes, really. It’s a bike race that combines cycling with donut eating and it’s been held for the last 20 years in Stanton, Illinois. This year a thousand cyclists participated, cycling from donut stop to donut stop, until they either reached the finish line or became too weighed down by donuts to continue.

Personally, I’d rather have my donut with coffee…

Brady Forrest has announced the Call for Papers for ETech. Two of the topics should be of interest to bbgm readers
Personalized Healthcare: Medical technology is something that almost everyone comes to rely on, whether it’s hopeful, preventive care in the form of Reseveratol, or a new limb. In no other area does the industrialized world have more of an advantage. What legal framework for personal genomics balances innovation and appropriate medical caution? How is medicine changing? How is healthcare changing across the world? Many resources are focused on anti-aging technology and drugs—is this the right direction?
Synthetic Biology: We can’t cover the reinvention of living without looking at the new definition of life. Synthetic biology, first pioneered in the 1970s, is becoming a ...

BioInform has a report (sub reqd, or get it from the Google cache) on a special session on scientific publishing organized my Scott Markel at ISMB. Since that is a topic of particular interest to bbgm and bbgm readers, thought I’d give it a read and find out if there were any new insights there.
I won’t delve into all the specifics, but it is clear that there is a desire in the community to make scientific publication as machine readable as possible. As has been discussed many times here, scientific research is a treasure trove of information and the content contained within papers and other forms of publishing should become part of the data that we try to mine and correlate, and in the long term it’s not just the text, but as pointed out in the article images and other d...

Post-OSCON thoughts: Platforms, machine learning & Freebase

Freebase is a service (I use that word very deliberately) that I have talked about before. I have long had plans for Freebase, but never quite gotten around to doing more than some minor type creation and edits (as opposed to Pierre, who is quite well known with the Freebase crowd). I have also been somewhat annoyed at Freebase’s not quite Semantic Web status and requirement to reside within their environment.
Yesterday, at OSCON, I had the chance to listen to a talk by Jamie, Colin and Toby from Metaweb/Freebase. It was a great, enlightening talk, very much a computer science/technology talk, helped by interesting garb (pirate eye patches anyone). I left wanting to go back and play with the system. I really liked the examples that they showed, which really demonstrated the power of ...

Image via WikipediaMark Shuttleworth was one of three opening day speakers at OSCON. During his talk, he used a phrase that really resonated with me
Architect for innovation
He said this in the context of building a platform that allowed others to be innovative, e.g. Firefox and it’s plugin architecture. I immediately texted myself that phrase. As life scientists, we really lack such platforms. One reason I liked Pipeline Pilot when I saw it was because, it was like a drawing board for ideas. Cytoscape has that potential (although could be easier to use), as does Taverna, although it’s a little heavy too. Bioclipse probably falls into that category as well.
Next time a company, or a developer goes about developing a software suite for molecular modeling, or expression analysis ...

Relay for Life: We’ve all heard about it. Most of us have supported it in one way or another. And, most importantly, many, many of us know someone who is currently or has been affected by cancer. To say that nearly everyone has been touched by this disease in one way or another is a complete understatement.
So…with the Relay for Life walks on this summer’s schedule, are you going to participate? Have you formed a group with friends or coworkers to walk? If not, and you’d still like to get involved, head over to Second Life next weekend. There you can create a mini version of yourself and interact with some new online pals. What’s more? You can buy a little virtual Relay t-shirt to put on your virtual self. Last year alone, selling these “t-shirts” ...

Coke seems to be exerting all possible efforts promoting their new product, Coke Zero, as there’s another event similar to their “surprise” last February but, this time, sponsored together with SM Hypermart: the Buhay Coke ng Bloggers with SM Hypermarket. This happened last June 27, Friday, at Taste Asia in SM Mall of Asia.
This time, I did not come alone. I was with my friend, Ailyn, currently a non-blogger but, with a little more prodding, might go into blogging (or maybe not. She doesn’t even check her email and Friendster page. Hehe).
Well, at least, I think she enjoyed having encountered Marcelle’s magic:

Calling all New Yorkers and anyone planning on being in the city next week. Healthbolt’s got a free lunch to give away.
Here’s the deal…
I was contacted by a PR Agency to see if I’d like to attend a “first taste moment” of Truvia natural sweetener, the natural, zero-calorie, great-tasting sweetener made from rebiana, the best tasting part of the stevia plant. They are having press briefings and a luncheon to launch their product.
Now I’m never one to turn down a free lunch and I’m quite interested in finding out more about this product having run across the stevia plant at a number of farmer’s markets. But living in New Zealand makes it difficult to do lunch in New York City.
So I suggested to the PR people that I’d like to offer ...

The venue and dates for BioBarCamp have been finalized and we would like to continue to get the word out for participants and sponsors.
BioBarCamp is a gathering of people interested in the life sciences and we hope to have about a 100 people to come together for a 24 hours of fun and serious discussion. Hopefully, a project or two will come out of the event. So those of you who are interested, please hop on over to the Google Group to signup
Several people, individuals and companies, have come forward with sponsorship for meals and beverages (geeks need their caffeine). But we could always do with more. So if you are an individual who wants to pitch in, or a company that would like to sponsor the event please contact either myself (deepak AT deepaksingh [DOT] net) or Attila Csordas ([atti...

The first day on Day 1 of the New Communication Channels for Biology workshop was great. Lots of interesting talks and Q&A sessions at a very good venue. More after I return to Seattle, but it is good to see scientists discuss wikis, blogs, video, open science, etc openly, without too much rhetoric. There are also many people really leveraging wikis and other platforms for real science, and doing a pretty good job of thinking about APIs and making sure their resources exist on the programmable web. Also got a chance to plug FriendFeed :).

Going to San Diego has its own charm. I lived there for almost six years, the longest I have ever stayed in any place for a continuous stretch. I haven’t gone back since I moved to the Seattle area, so hopefully I will get a chance to say hello to old friends and my brother-in-law.

For lots of us, June means one thing: School’s Out. Which could be a good thing…or not so much.
Doesn’t matter how we feel, this time of year seems to come whether we want it to or not. And thus, it is the center of this month’s Theme Day here across the b5media Health & Wellness Channel.

It’s Friday the 13th: How Superstitious are YOU?

Does the fact that it’s Friday the 13th make you nervous? Or no?

Okay, all. It’s Friday the 13th. How does that make you feel? Are you freaking out about it? Do you love it like some people love Halloween and breaking mirrors and black cats? I gotta know.
Because the thing is: I despise Friday the 13th. Of course, I am a crazy superstitious kind of person, so that doesn’t help matters much. For instance, my son opened an umbrella inside school a couple weeks ago and I freaked. I absolutely refuse to walk under a ladder. The only thing I don’t care much about is the whole black cat thing because, well, I have one. And she’s a little wacky, yes, but I’ve come to appreciate that about her now. But the rest of i...

Consumers Report More Adverse Events Than Docs

Consumers became the major source of adverse event reports to the FDA in 2006, replacing physicians, FDA News reports. In 1998, consumers reported 23,691 adverse events, compared with 48,314 physician reports. By 2006, a tipping point occurred - there were 127,475 consumer reports versus 113,444 physician reports, according to FDA data.
And last year, the gulf grew wider - consumers reported 174,216 adverse events in 2007, which was 53,216 more than reported by docs, according to the data.
Why the shift? FDA News speculates that consumers may have greater awareness of safety issues. That seems to be a reasonable assumption, given the headlines over antidepressants and Vioxx in 2004, a trend that continued last year with Avandia and Chantix. However, we would point out that safety issues ...

Exposed to a Traumatic Event? Maybe Venting Isn’t So Good

This study’s first set of data was collected on the day of September 11th 2001. As people sat at home trying to digest the shocking events of the day, 36,000 people were contacted through the internet. These people were part of a pre-selected nationally representative sample of participants who had already agreed to receive regular requests for surveys.
They were simply prompted to express whatever thoughts and emotions were currently on their minds, should they choose to do so. Of all these people, 2,138 people were followed up over a period of two years after 9/11 to see how they coped with the collective trauma.
The aim of the researcher’s prompt was to make it similar to a psychologist asking someone to share their experience after they witness a traumatic event. Naturall...

Tell us about your breast cancer event

This week in Detroit they had the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The American Cancer Society has been hosting their community events as well. All these efforts are to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. One thing that my sister and I would love to do is the three day walk. They are also having a Race for the Cure in Detroit this fall. This event is a little steep though, with participants having to raise over $2,000 in personal donations. Planning for this may take me to 2009.Our cure is coming and it is events like these that are fueling the battle. When you get close to a victory it is not time to relax, but time to press on with even greater efforts. Each year I like to give a forum for people that are participating in something for breast cancer to let us know all about it....

Depression Doesn’t Play Favorites: An Exclusive Interview with a Depression Sufferer

Tomorrow is theme day once again here at the b5media Health & Wellness channel and this month is all about depression. Not a sunny topic, I know, but one that is vitally important and has most likely touched each and every one of us in some way or another.
Thus, I am so honored to have been able to interview Tristram Hussey, our very own blogger training extraordinaire. Tris has been suffering with depression for many years and has some incredibly valuable insight to share regarding diagnosis, treatment, triggers and more. Tris’s hope is that if this interview helps even one person see a doctor for treatment, we have accomplished something great. Indeed, Tris.
And now, the interview:
1. Depression is often considered a quiet disease or one that many folks live with for quite som...

How The FDA Will Spend Some PDUFA Fees

Where will the money go? Well, the agency says it will significantly expand its postmarketing safety activities, adopting new scientific approaches to drug safety to meet its commitments under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, FDA News reports.
The agency plans to spend fees to fund epidemiology “best practices” and data acquisition ($7 million in fiscal 2008, increasing to $9.5 million in fiscal 2012); new drug trade name review ($5.3 million in fiscal 2008, rising to $6.5 million in fiscal 2012); and risk management and communication ($4 million in fiscal 2008, rising to $5 million in fiscal 2012), according to FDA News.
In a draft Drug Safety Five-Year Plan that the agency updates annually and issued for comment last Friday, the FDA signals its intention to use the fees t...
