Many thanks to our speakers, Phyllis Greenberger, Dr. James Simon, and Susan Wysocki, and to Disruptive Women’s Wendy Grossman for the following summary post.
Our panel this morning discussed the issues surrounding how the WHI results were interpreted and communicated to women and their health care providers. We recognize that hormones are not appropriate for all women, and look forward to hosting a future panel that highlights alternatives.
The speakers have a variety of backgrounds and experiences (and genders), and we aim to promote diversity of voices.

This was not normal breakfast conversation.
Today was a jolting – and disruptive – talk about what happens to women’s bodies when they age. (Who knew that if you’re menopausal and you don’t take your hormones...

There are a few events coming up in May that I wanted to let those of you in the New York tri-state area know about:

On May 1, dLife is hosting a free fitness class at CLAY Fitness Club for people living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The instructor will take you through a 45 minute fitness class where we’ll learn new workout techniques, get a little sweaty and learn from each other about exercising with diabetes. This is a beginner’s class, but all fitness levels are welcomed. Participants will also test their blood sugar together before, during and after class. Just like camp! dLife TV will be covering pieces of the class as a portion of their Sunday night programming.
I recently had the privilege of attending a lecture by Dr. Nick Gorton, an openly transgender physician, on the topic of transgender medicine. Long story short, it was amazing.
Anybody walks into a lecture hall and starts their talk by explaining the differences between sex and gender, between gender identity and gender expression, and defines for the audience cisgender and cissexual wins my affection right away. He also gave an introductory review of the history of transgender care in the U.S. and the flawed research and politics which have stood in the way of people getting the care that they need and deserve. He made it clear in no uncertain terms that appropriate care can be a matter of life and death, and that any doctor who refuses to either care for or appropriately and promptly r...

Patti makes a key point that reflects Project HealthDesign’s current work: patient-generated data are not simply traditional clinical data (like blood pressure or glucose) collected by patients. Instead, patient-generated data could include a whole host of observations about health behaviors, symptoms and environmental factors that are relevant to someone’s health. As we’ve discussed over the past couple of years in various posts (see here or here), “observations of daily living” on diet, activity, sleep, pain...

We live in a society obsessed with outside beauty so it’s no wonder that parents whose children are born with any imperfection worry endlessly about how their child will be accepted in society. As parents, though, our job is to make sure our kids see themselves as much more than whatever obstacles are tossed their way, as tough as that may be.
Adam and Donna Bell felt that anguish first hand in 2005 when their son Ethan was born with cleft lip and palate. Ethan now has an adorable smile and hardly a scar at all thanks to the amazingly talented doctors at the NYU Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. Wanting to do more to raise awareness about nearly 1 in 600 infants born with cleft (opening) lip or palate each year, the Bell’s founded Smiley Faces Foundation, a nonprofi...

In another post, I highlight a new publication from the Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women on climate change and reproductive justice, particularly the ways in which a focus on reducing climate change through population control harms women. I also recently featured a virtual birthing center in Second Life and Facebook tips for midwives.

"Sarah Palin's Alaska", set to air on TLC, is getting lots of attention, but not in a good way.
Remember “Drill, Baby, Drill!”? We’re guessing that The Discovery Network (which owns TLC, Planet Green, and the Discovery Channel) would like you to forget about it, given its recent $2 million contract with Alaska’s former Governor Sarah Palin. The rogue politician will host a reality TV series, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, about her home state, but it’s stirring up considerable controversy among animal rights and environmental groups.
Many activists disapprove of Palin, who is well-known for her pro-oil-drilling slogans and staunch support of aerial wolf hunting, being featured on a network known for health, wellness, and nature programming.

The article -- "In Reporting Symptoms, Don’t Patients Know Best?" (find it here) -- suggested that doctors tend to "downgrade symptoms" (ie, adverse effects of drugs) reported to them by their patients because of "wishful thinking" or, worse, because they do not want to document problems they failed to act on for fear of being sued. That being the case, there is little hope that widespread use of electronic medical records will capture useful adverse events that the FDA can analyze.
At the Spring 2010 meeting of the Society for General Microbiology In Edinburgh I spoke about ‘Social Media in Microbiology Education and Research’. In my presentation I reviewed how I use blogging, podcasting, and other social media tools to teach the public about viruses.
Below is a video recording of my presentation. Many thanks to Prof. AJ Cann for the opportunity to speak about our efforts. I also enjoyed excellent presentations by Prof. Graham Hatfull, Cameron Neylon, Kevin Emamy of citeulike, and Jason Hoyt of Mendeley.

Joshua Greene is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Harvard University. He studies emotion and reason in moral judgment using behavioral experiments, functional neuroimaging (fMRI), and other neuroscientific methods. The goal of his research is to understand how moral judgments are shaped by automatic processes, such as emotional gut reactions, and controlled cognitive processes, such as reasoning and self-control.
The event will take place in Pound 101 at Harvard Law School, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Use of the rotavirus vaccine Rotarix in the US has been temporarily suspended because the vaccine was found to be contaminated with porcine circovirus 1 DNA. The discovery was made in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Delwart, who has provided insight into what was found in Rotarix, and why he was analyzing the vaccine.
Delwart and his colleagues examined the purity of a number of human vaccines:
A little historical perspective about why we decided to analyze these vaccines even though there was absolutely no indications whatsoever that they are at all unsafe. Our intent was to use the latest technologies to show that live attenuated vaccine only contained the expected viral genomes and no other.
The Delwart laboratory obtained samples of eight infectious attenuated viral vaccines from the manufa...

One of the giants of medicinal chemistry has died today at the age of 85 - Sir James Black, who pioneered beta-adrenoceptor antagonists and many other areas in drug discovery. Keep in mind that earlier in his career, many people thought of the concept of a "receptor" as an abstract placeholder, not necessarily something with any physical meaning. We've come a long way since then, and his work is one of the big reasons why.

He was part of the "pure medicinal chemistry" Nobel Prize award of 1988, along with George Hitchings and Gertrude Elion. There's a good interview with him at that Nobel site, and here's a tribute to him on YouTube. (Source: In the Pipeline)

Since I've written occasionally about the current health care reform efforts here, I feel as if I should say something now that a bill has passed the House. To be honest, though, I'm having a bit of trouble getting my thoughts in order, although I do feel the need to vent. Readers who aren't in the mood for my political opinions can skip this one.

Here goes: first off, it's rather hard for me to get past my anger at being told (repeatedly, by both the President and members of Congress) that this bill will "bend the cost curve" and on top of that, actually reduce the deficit. This is, in this case, such a transparent lie that it indicates actual contempt for their audience on the part of those repeating it. We can start with history and general principles: I have yet to hear of a state or ...

* * *

At the conceptual heart of tort law rests a choice between negligence and strict liability as the default standard of care for unintentional wrongs. The prevailing American view holds that strict liability should be reserved for rare cases in which an activity poses significant hazards even after a defendant has taken all reasonable care. The types of explanations for that preference have shifted over time from a classical liberal rationale to an economic...

We are concerned about the barriers that women face in accessing clinicians and facilities that are able and willing to offer TOL [trial of labor]. Given the level of evidence for the requirement for “immediately available” surgical and anesthesia personnel in current guidelines, we recommend that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists reassess this requirement relative to other obstetrical complications of comparable risk, risk stratification, and in light of limited physician and nursing resources. Healthcare organizations, physicians, and other clinicians should consider making public their TOL policy and VBAC rates, as well as their plans for responding to obstetric emergencies. How deep are the bounds on human thinking and feeling and how do they shape social judgment? Our focus has been on the mechanics of unconscious mental processes, with attention to those that operate without conscious awareness, intention, or control. Most recently, we have worked with a task that reveals unconscious preferences in a rather blunt manner, showing that they can sit, at one level, in contradiction with consciously endorsed preferences. We use the tool largely for theory testing, focusing on questions about the natur...

Discussion tab makes clear feuding editors battling for control about tone and focus.
I don’t know what to make of transcendental meditation personally, but I find studies like the recently published one interesting. I know people who use it and swear by its positive effects (but I also know people who use other techniques and methods and swear by them as well). I suspect some of the skepticism comes from the pseudo-religious nature of technique, or the fact that it costs money to learn it. But in my experience, many things worth learning cost money (look at my graduate education, for instance). My only concern is that if it is something that is “simple, natural, effortless, and easily learned,” why does it cost $1,500 and an entire day to learn?
I’ve read enough t...

The first step in building your decision tree.
I’m going to my first book launch party tomorrow. I’m a bit nervous.
It’s for Thomas Goetz’s book The Decision Tree, which was just released. His book and blog carry great insight into the future of health – personalization, quantification, and smarter choices. He even created a nifty app on Wired’s website where you can build your own decision tree.
Why am I nervous? Well, the book includes my own personal decision tree (see below), based on my 10-year battle with chronic pain. So now everyone who reads it will know my story. Which is scary but also fantastic, because I think hearing people’s stories is such an important part of healing ourselves that is often missing in traditional doctor-patient hea...

On Friday, I had the privilege of attending a talk by Abraham Verghese hosted by the larger workplace for its Abraham Flexner lecture. Verghese is the author of “My Own Country,” a book chronicling his work as a physician tending to AIDS patients in the early days in East Tennessee. I just read “My Own Country” recently, and was particularly intrigued by it because I was a kid growing up in a town mentioned in the book at the time Dr. Verghese was practicing there. I remember the kinds of misconceptions many still had about AIDS a decade after the period he covers, and I can imagine what the environment must have been like for his work and his patients.
Friday’s talk was titled, “Touching Where it Hurts: The Role of Bedside Examination in a Technologica...

PatientsLikeMe (PLM) -- an online community for people with "life-changing conditions" -- submitted comments to Docket No. FDA‐2009‐N‐0441 regarding Promotion of FDA‐Regulated Medical Products Using the Internet and Social Media Tools (find it here). The most interesting comments are about PLM's experience with adverse events reported by its members. In short, PLM found that 7% of 500 randomly selected posts from the 364,000 posts contributed by patients within the PatientsLikeMe Forum during 2009 incorporated all four elements required for reporting an adverse event (an identifiable patient, a specific medication, an identifiable reporter and a reaction). This is 35 times the rate in the frequently cited Nielson study, which found only one such message in its random sample o...

In the third quarter of 2009, the number of serious, disabling and fatal adverse drug events reported to the FDA numbered 29,065, compared to 26,809 in the same quarter a year earlier, an 8.4 percent rise, according to the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices. For the first three quarters of 2009 combined, the total number of reports was 8.1 percent higher than in the same period of 2008.
Highlights of ISMP’s QuarterWatch report include: More than 1,000 reports of patient deaths were received for GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia in the first three quarters of 2009, more than any other drug the non-profit monitors. Most deaths were attributed to cardiovascular causes and ISMP says that Glaxo responded by saying “most reports were generated by lawsuits.”

There’s this light on my way to work that is just a royal pain. It’s set up so that you have to wait for the arrow to make a left hand turn. The intersection is busy, especially in the mornings, and the arrow only stays lit for about 13 seconds. So you end up waiting five minutes or more – through several light cycles – to make the turn.
OR … you can go straight through the intersection, turn left into McDonald’s parking lot, pull out of the parking lot, come back to the intersection from the other direction, and make a right turn, saving yourself 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
Now mind you that drivers who choose the latter route are, in effect, going through a red turn arrow – they’re just taking a bunch of extra steps to make sure that they are...

If you’re in New York this evening, you may want to head over to the Housing Works Bookstore Café (126 Crosby St.) at 7 p.m. for a free panel discussion on “marketing embarrassing products to women.”
While that might not sound like the most appealing way to spend a Monday night, consider these three reasons to attend

Being at TED last week led to some interesting conversations about data, health and the progress of health IT. One conversation in particular stuck with me – a computer industry executive pointed out that the pace of innovation in the computer industry is orders of magnitude faster than in the health IT industry. Orders of magnitude. As in 10, 100, 1000 times faster. A bold claim. But then think about some of the advancements shown at TED:

Much is has been written about TED 2010, so I thought I’d just chip in with a quick list of my five favorite TED talks that I urge people to watch online once they’re posted. (We’ll let you know via Twitter — @pioneerrwjf — when they are.) Before I get to the top 5, though, I do want to plug the talks by two of our Pioneer grantees – Nicholas Christakis and Philip Howard. If you haven’t had a chance to hear Christakis take you through the discoveries he made about the role of social networks in obesity and happiness or Howard put forth his ideas on how to change the legal system (and with it the way we approach malpractice in health care), please check them out on TED.com.

In no particular order, my five faves were as follows:

I particularly enjoyed the TED talk by Elizabeth Pisani, author of the book, The Wisdom of Whores. A former journalist whose work now focuses on drug users and sex workers, Pisani has a PhD in infectious disease epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and spoke on the second morning, one day after Princeton’s Daniel Kahneman, the father of behavioral economics.
Pisani voiced frustration during her talk about the mismatch between government policies and public health approaches and what influences the choices sex workers and drug users make. Her argument drew on the analytical framework behavioral economists like Kahneman have used so effectively to describe and understand the choices people make.
Pisani dismissed the field of public health as being limited by...

Jamie Oliver at TED
I actually don't think Jamie is saying something revolutionary or new in his TedTalk this year...all about teaching children about real foods in order to save our lives...BUT:

1. He has a passion that is, hopefully, infectious
2. He's actually gone out and done something about it in a community in our unhealthiest state, West Virginia. And it seems replicatable.

Check out his 20 minute talk: (Source: HealthyConcerns.com)

This day conference seeks to develop critical discussion on all three aspects (EHE, policy, and the academic debate). In particular, we seek to review ‘suitable’ and ‘efficient’ as educationally significant (see Section 7, Education Act 1996), which the Badman Report largely side-stepped.The conference, stimulated by a number of papers and responses, will seek to explore the legitimacy of this conceptual framework for EHE, and possible conceptualisations which offer a practical way forward for parents and policy makers in a UK context.Event details here. Nothing To Work With But Cleanliness: African American “Grannies”, Midwives & Health Reform
For over three centuries, African American midwives delivered babies and practiced folk medicine in rural counties throughout the South. Midwifery came under public scrutiny in the 1910s when progressive reformers blamed the “unsanitary practices” of midwives for the higher rate of maternal and infant deaths. During the next two decades reformers campaigned unsuccessfully to eliminate the practice of midwifery. There simply were not enough skilled physicians or hospital facilit...

I'll start a post here so those with details on today's GlaxoSmithKline news can leave comments. I assume we'll be hearing from the UK folks shortly, and the US more in the middle of the day. I also wonder if these announcements will be like the AstraZeneca one earlier - that is, cuts to be staged over a longer period. Those are a mixed bag. They keep people employed longer (and give them some hope that there may be a place to go by the time their position gets cut), but it also spreads Morale-B-Gone dust over a place for an extended time.

Good luck to all concerned. (Source: In the Pipeline)

Tomorrow, February 4th is World Cancer Day. This year’s theme is “Cancer can be prevented too” and the UICC which is leading the campaign says that many cancers can be prevented with just some simple measures.
  * Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
  * Limit alcohol consumption
  * Avoid excessive sun exposure
  * Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly
  * Protect against cancer-causing infections

Other than prevention, many cancers are curable if detected early, and some (e.g. colorectal, cervical, and breast cancer) are detectable at an early stage if appropriate screening is done.

I love a rodeo, most of the time we watch them on television, but we were able to attend a couple when we were out west on extended business trips in Colorado. There is a BIG one that takes place in the Houston, Texas area that I've never had the privilege of attending, but if I were ever to be down that way in March, it would be on my list of things to do.What makes them unique aside from the usual rodeo events is the concerts that take place the evening of the events. Some of the big names in country music perform at these events, including Kenny Chesny, Alan Jackson, oh, and the Jonas Brothers...the brothers' home town is a 1/2 hours drive from our home here in NJ. Then there's Rascal Flats, Toby Keith, Brooks and Dunn, the month of March is pretty much covered with big names, mostly in...

This information comes to me secondhand, so I'm not sure how accurate it is. I hope it turns out not to be true. A correspondent writes to me that he's spoken this week to someone who had recently been at the former Wyeth site in Princeton, which is in the process of shutting down. The usual practice is for industrial research sites to make surplus equipment available to academic labs and the like, but the report is that this isn't happening in this case.

Instead, glassware is just being broken and tossed, along with a lot of other equipment, and the entire chemical reagent collection is supposedly going to be carted off by a waste disposal firm for incineration. That must be the commercially available stuff on the shelves - sometimes it's not worth the paperwork and trouble to send those...

Each year, NARAL Pro-Choice America poses a theme for Blog for Choice Day to commemorate the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. This year’s theme honors murdered provider Dr. George Tiller, who reportedly often wore a button that simply read, “Trust Women.”
What “trust women” means to me is a theme I discussed in my 2007 Blog for Choice Day post, and I think those words bear reiteratin here.
I am pro-choice because I believe in women. I believe there are situations in a woman’s life that I/the government cannot possibly manage for her, and I believe individual women are the ones responsible for making the best choices for themselves and their families. Not me, not a politician solely interested in rallying the faithful, not a pharmacist who refuses to...

There is a FDA (CDRH) Workshop on Medical Device Interoperability scheduled for January 25 - 27 at the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Silver Springs, MD. Here’s a link to the meeting’s official web site, which includes a number of downloadable files on the agenda, meeting logistics and background.
There is little question the workflow automation and intelligence offered by interconnecting medical devices can improve patient safety. There’s also little doubt that there is significant market demand for such solutions. For example, if hospitals could purchase PCA pumps and SpO2 monitors that were interoperable, i.e., the monitor could suspend drug delivery at the first indication of respiratory arrest, such a capability would quickly become a standard of care. Interoperab...

Blog for Choice Day is something I’ve participated in for the last three years, but it always sneaks up on me. Not this year! 2010’s Blog for Choice Day is happening this Friday, January 22, 2010.
Past entries on the topic have included a discouraged 2007 post on why I’m pro-choice, why I vote pro-choice (in 2008), and my pro-choice hopes for President Obama and/or the new Congress (many of which have already happened). This year’s theme is in honor of Dr. George Tiller, who often wore a button that simply read, “Trust Women,” focusing on the question “What does ‘Trust Women” mean to you?”

The enormity and randomness of natural disasters such as the one that devastated Haiti this week is truly overwhelming. If we’re having difficulty coming to terms with the myriad of emotions and paralyzing impressions as adults, you can imagine how challenging this has been for our kids, regardless of age, to start to make sense of.

A few years back around a similarly challenging world event, I discussed the issue of talking with kids about tough world events with Dr. Paula Rausch from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. You can my full column with her advice here but the bottom line is to reassure our kids about how rare these events are and that they are currently safe.
In addition, it’s important to monitor the news coverage. It’s tempting t...

This Saturday (January 16, 2010, 8am-4pm), the Center will offer $30 women’s health exams (including pap tests) as part of its Women’s Health Day.
The announcement also indicates that:
Copays are due at the time of service. TennCare customers will have exam and lab fees covered. Insured women will have the costs billed to insurance. Some women age 40-64 may qualify for a free exam and Pap Test under certain federal guidelines.

To prime the pump, I asked a couple folks for their ideas.

Kevin MD is one of the most popular, prolific and comprehensive MedBlogs out there. Multiple posts per day cover just about every piece of medical news out there. So, I read with interest his list of his Top 13 most popular blog posts of 2009.The tally:
Three about Michael Jackson
Three about swine flu
One about the Octomom
One about Jett Travolta
One about the Brazilian model who died from sepsis

So, six of thirteen about celebrity death and another three about swine flue, admittedly a hot topic. Given that, I'm guessing a whole lot of hits come from Google search.I find it somewhat sad that there was only one post about health care reform out of the whole Top 13. In general I think the Internet has made us smarter, more connected, more informed, more able to express ourselves.&...

What with the new year and decade and all, it seems appropriate to engage in a bit of reflection. First, the blog itself. This year will mark the 5th anniversary of Women’s Health News – I first posted on May 19, 2005, although that was at the blogspot location. While this little blog is not among what most people would name as the top medical or top feminist blogs, I don’t worry too much about traffic, or increasing traffic, so long as at least a a few people are finding it useful and I’m not too overworked to deal with it. So, I expect to continue on for a bit longer. Will it make it to the decade mark? Who knows. I do sometimes find the lack of comments discouraging, but it is what it is. If there is anything you’d like to see covered more often, or less of...

Last year, we delved into the psychology of New Year’s resolutions, describing what little research has been done on why and how people make New Year’s resolutions.
So here’s the good news from this year’s research tidbit — if you’re getting old and thinking that death is on your door, the week is yours to live and enjoy. Chances are good that you’ll make it to New Year’s day.
Shimizu & Pelham (2008) looked at death records for millions of people using Social Security Death Index (SSDI) records. This database contains more than 70 million records of people who died in the U.S. in the past 65 years, according to the researchers. They wanted to determine whether people died more often before a major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New ...

Back Up Your Birth Control This New Year’s Eve – A Message from Granny

The video below* is a kind of funny approach to promoting safer sex (and advance planning for said safer sex). It features several women reading text messages aloud, messages that have been erroneously sent by their grandchildren in the midst of New Year’s Eve partying and are often awkward or sexual.
The key point is that it’s easy to accidentally text your grandmother during such celebrations (possibly while inebriated**, I’m guessing), and other things – such as your contraception – can easily go wrong, too. As it notes, condoms break, pills are forgotten, so you should back up your birth control. If you go to the associated website, dontdroptheball.org (from the National Institute for Reproductive Health), it becomes clear that they’re suggesting ac...

Millions of New Yorkers were immunized against smallpox within a few weeks in April 1947. The stimulus for this mass immunization was the importation of smallpox by a businessman who had acquired the disease during his travels. While we are in the middle of a massive influenza immunization campaign, it is useful to review the 1947 accomplishment as a model for public health planning and mobilization.
Early in March 1947, an American arrived in New York City by bus from Mexico City. He was ill upon arrival, and died in hospital within a few days. The cause of death was listed as bronchitis. Eleven days later a 22 month old baby and a 25 year old man were admitted to the same hospital with symptoms of smallpox. Laboratory tests revealed that these two individuals, as well as the businessman ...

Courtesy of Pharmalot (and my mail!), I note this alarming story from London. GE Healthcare makes a medical NMR contrast agent, a gadolinium complex marketed under the name of Omniscan. (They picked it up when they bought Amersham a few years ago). Henrik Thomsen, a Danish physician had noted what may be an association with its use and a serious kidney condition, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, and he gave a short presentation on his findings two years ago at a conference in Oxford.

For which GE is suing him. For libel. They claim that his conference presentation was defamatory, and continue to insist on damages even though regulatory authorities in both the UK and in the rest of Europe have reviewed the evidence and issued warnings about Omniscan's use in patients with kidney trouble.
From HLS in Focus (describing the new student group working with the Project on Law and Mind Sciences (PLMS) at Harvard Law School and the fascinating talk that Stephen Pinker recently gave there).
* * *

“SALMS” is a recently formed group whose acronym stands for: Student Association for Law and Mind Sciences. They are interested keeping the law school community informed about research in the mind sciences that has profound implications for law and policy making. The group is currently in the process of creating a journal that touches on the same topic. If they are successful, it will be the first journal of its kind in the country.
The event that I attended was a lecture by Harvard College Professor, Steven Pinker. The title of the talk was: “A History of Violence: How We Became Le...

I took this picture a couple of years ago during a trip to Iowa. This is the old Clarinda Asylum for the Insane. The name was changed for obvious reasons a long time ago to the Clarinda Treatment Complex. I grew up in Iowa, so let me tell you a few things about my home state. Among other things, Iowans grow corn, raise hogs, and sometimes elect people to the Iowa State House who need a little schooling about mental illness and the needs of the mentally ill.

Iowa currently has four state hospitals for the mentally ill. Now that number is being cut down to three. Iowa State Legislators, who have no clue about what they’re doing, ordered the head of the Department of Human Services, Charles Krogmeier, to shut down one of the state’s mental hospitals. The Clarinda facility and three ...

Mid-last year, we learned that Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama, would be attending BlogHer '09 for a brief amount of time. She was hoping to meet bloggers with health care stories to tell because the health care reform debate was really heating up.

She had such a meeting with about 20 bloggers. Some of them blogged about ongoing health issues, like diabetes and cancer, every day...it was part of what their blogs were all about. Some of them weren't really health bloggers at all, but had a story to tell...about the time they were denied coverage, or the time their coverage was dropped, about the time they lost nearly everything because of health care costs.

Ever since that meeting at BlogHer '09 we have been working on a way to bring more information about women w...

The North Somerset Home Education Group, set up in 2001, is taking a stand at the fair to allow people to find out more about the group. It is made up of families from across North Somerset who have chosen to teach their children at home. The group meets regularly for social activities and to take part in physical activities with the children like gymnastics and ice skating. They also organise educational workshops.Group member Sarah Souter said: "Some parents decide to home educate because they believe it's the best way for the child to learn and grow. MoPhO's interactive musical works take advantage of the unique technological capabilities of today's hardware and software, transforming multi-touch screens, built-in accelerometers, built-in microphones, GPS, data networks, and computation into powerful and yet mobile chamber meta-instruments. : : : Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
: : : Ben: Yes I am.
: : : Mr. McGuire: ‘Plastics.’
: : : Ben: Exactly how do you mean?
: : : Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?
: : : Ben: Yes I will.
: : : Mr. McGuire: Shh! Enough said. That’s a deal.
Mr. McGuire had a crystal ball. Or maybe he had a plastic ball. The future was all about plastics. Unfortunately the future would also be filled with debates about BPA. I was invited to sit in on a conversation with Dr. Val Jones from Better Health. One of t...

This week at Our Bodies Our Blog, I posted a bit about ACOG’s new cervical cancer screening guidelines, and linked to a bunch of organizations with information about the Stupak amendment in the health reform legislation related to yesterday’s day of action – there is a link to the Twitter hashtag to see what people were saying from events in D.C. and elsewhere.
I had been intending to post more here this week, but I caught the nephew’s cold over the holiday. Urgh.

We had a really interesting meeting. It was provocative and wide-ranging; I can’t begin to do it justice in the format of a blog. Look for a more thoughtful and informative report in the weeks to come. Also, we’ll work to set up an on-line space where people who are interested in these questions can come together. In the meantime, here are just a few ideas and thoughts to come out of the meeting:

Do we need a next-generation model for behavior change? The models we have for behavior change have enabled impressive gains and powerful programs, but they were largely developed 20 years ago when our ability to understand what is going on inside someone’s brain was much less developed. Technology that didn’t exist 20 years ago provides a ...

At the end of 1981, the year that I had shown that cloned poliovirus DNA is infectious, BBC Radio asked me to do an interview about the work. The name of the show was Science Now but I can’t recall who was the host. Whoever he was, he didn’t understand what I had done and got the science all wrong. Listen to the interview below and see if you can spot his errors.
For the interview I went to the MIT student radio station where I sat alone behind a wall of glass, with headphones on, before a very large microphone. On the other side of the glass a few disk jockeys were broadcasting a show; the music came through and was picked up by the BBC recorder.
A few weeks after the interview the BBC sent me a tape of the show with a note which read “With the compliments of the British...

I've been remiss in not mentioning this, but I just found out recently that Warren DeLano (the man behind the excellent open-source PyMOL program) passed away suddenly earlier this month. He was 37 - another unfortunate loss of a scientist who had done a lot of fine work and was clearly on the way to doing much more.

I notice that as I write this I have a PyMOL window open on my desktop; I use the program regularly to look at protein structures. Si monumentum requiris, circumspice. (Source: In the Pipeline)

I read an article at Salon.com today that made me wonder about your judgement. Since when did you stop listening to your doctors? The article was about Dr. Kernan Manion, a psychiatrist who wanted to help troops before they went postal on military bases. Uncle Sam, Dr. Manion use to work for you at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Then he got fired. Why did you give Dr. Manion the boot for stating the obvious? He pointed out that troops at Camp Lejeune are getting bullied by superiors and dumped into an overwhelmed mental health care system when...

The first episode of our new science podcast, “This Week in Parasitism“, is now available.
This Week in Parasitism (TWiP) is a podcast about eukaryotic parasites hosted by Vincent Racaniello and Dick Despommier. Following in the path of their podcast ‘This Week in Virology’ (TWiV), they strive for an informal yet informative conversation about parasites which is accessible to everyone, no matter what their science background.
As science Professors at Columbia University, they have spent their entire academic careers directing research laboratories focused on parasites (Dick) and viruses (Vincent). Their enthusiasm for teaching inspired them to reach beyond the classroom with new media. TWiP is for everyone who wants to learn about parasites in a relaxing way.

As many readers may have heard by now, Keith Fagnou of the University of Ottawa has suddenly died from what appears to be H1N1 influenza.

I'm awaiting confirmation of that diagnosis, which is worrisome for all sorts of other reasons, but whatever the cause, this is a loss for synthetic chemisty. Prof. Fagnou had published many interesting and useful papers on catalysis of bond-forming reactions, an area that's been growing steadily in importance for years and shows no signs of faltering. We need all the smart, capable people we can get working on such things, and I'm very sorry that we've lost one. Condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends.
For the Harvard Law Record, Harvard Law Students, Anush Emelianova and Gustavo Ribeiro, wrote a nice summary of Dan Gilbert’s recent lecture at Harvard Law School. His lecture, titled “Why Does the Brain Scare Itself?,” drew a crowd of roughly 150 students and contributed to Gilbert’s reputation as an amazing and captivating speaker. Here’s Emilianova and Ribeiro’s description.

Why does the brain scare itself? On Monday, October 19, Professor Dan Gilbert confronted this question in an event sponsored by first-year Section VI. Professor Gilbert, who wrote the bestselling book Stumbling on Happiness, is a Professor of Psychology at Harvard University and the Director of Harvard’s Hedonic Psychology Laboratory.
I spent last week in San Diego for TEDMED, the medical version of the TED conference. It was an incredible experience for me, almost overwhelming at times with the quality and number of amazing people there.
Here are my top 10 takeaways:
.
1. Disability to Super-Ability – Mullins, Kamen, Angle
Three incredible stories, told back to back, left the audience in tears and on the edge of their seats.

Prosthetically augmented athlete Aimee Mullins gave a moving account of how being “disabled” has affected her life in a positive way. She reframed our thinking: “Adversity isn’t an obstacle to get around, it’s part of our life. We adapt.”
Dean Kamen spoke of his passion to build prosthetics for war veterans that are ultimately better than real limbs, impar...
