Last week, I was at the Mobile Health Expo in New York, where conference organizer Wendy Thomas announced plans to form a group called the Mobile Health Association. I cover this today in MobiHealthNews.
Will this fill a void or just create more confusion in an industry that already includes groups such as the American Telemedicine Association, the mHealth Initiative, the mHealth Alliance, the Wireless-Life Sciences Alliance, the Continua Health Alliance, the West Wireless Health Institute and a few others? Watch this video, read the MobiHealthNews story, then decide for yourself.

Has this been reported before, or have I just not been paying close enough attention?
Yesterday at the Mobile Health Expo in New York, Sean Handel, vice president of subscriber business at Epocrates, said that the San Mateo, Calif.-based company known for its mobile medical reference tools, is building an EHR for small physician practices. “A significant portion of that product will be a patient portal,” Handel said.
Handel also said to expect to see more integration of mobile apps into clinical systems as more people shift to tablets from traditional PCs. That’s no surprise. We have so little integration now that it really can only go up.
While I’m being slightly cynical, I leave you with this thought from Google’s Dr. Roni Zeiger:

Imagine walking into the room of a patient with ascites and pulling out your iPad (which you were just using to put in orders on another patient), pulling an ultrasound probe out of your pocket, connecting the two, and finding a fluid pocket from which to drain the abdominal fluid.
We’ve already shown how iPad’s can be useful in the OR. Now they, along with other tablets and smartphones, can be applied to bedside diagnostics and therapeutics to enhance patient safety while reducing costs. It’s a pretty exciting prospect being put forth by an mHealth startup called Mobisante. And having won awards at an MIT Enterprise Forum as well as the Mobile Health Expo, others certainly seem to buying in as well.
Mobisante, an mHealth company based in Redmond, WA, has recently been showing a new ...

Having this blog has given me the opportunity to talk with a number of different transcription companies over the years. I think one thing has become pretty clear. The face of transcription is certainly changing quickly, but the need for transcription is still going to be there for a long while to come. Although, it won’t be the same process of transcription as we know today. Transcription and EMR will start to come together more and more.
Many of us (including myself) were quick to use transcription cost savings as a way to justify the purchase of an EMR. What I think we’ve seen over the 5 or so years I’ve been writing about EMR is that transcription can still be a fantastic compliment to an EMR system. EMR cost justification will often have to come from some of the othe...

One of the really interesting things that I’ve heard at the Mobile Health Expo has been the use of text messages to assist with patient compliance.
I think this is at least the third time at this conference that I’ve been hearing about the use of text messages in healthcare as a way to remind patients of their need to comply with the doctors instructions.
In one case, NoMoreClipboard is working with a hospital to use medical minutes (basically subsidizing their cell phone plan) for participants in a diabetes program. In this program, users would access the NoMoreClipboard PHR through their cell phone where they can update their blood glucose levels or other information as designed by their hospital.
This is pretty cool, but the interesting part is the way they’re using te...

Today I’m attending the Mobile Health Conference (mHealth) conference in Las Vegas. So far it’s been a pretty effective conference for me already. Although, I’ve gotten most of the value from the people and vendors I’ve met and talked with. Although, is that really any surprise at a conference. More about those meetings later.
In this morning’s keynote conversation, they had executives from T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint that spoke and then did a short panel discussion. I must admit that I’d hoped for more from the panel discussion and I probably would have rather just had the whole thing a panel discussion. With that said, the most interesting topic they discussed was the 2G, 3G, and 4G topic.
Of course, they didn’t really dig into the different w...

The panel that I was participating on was Social Networks & The Medical Blogosphere: Compatible or Competitive, with fellow panelists Kevin Pho and Bryan Vartabedian (see photo) moderated by the fabulous Kim McAllister. The big question was: “Are these social networking technologies helping or hurting the blogosphere?”

I recently signed up to be a media partner for the Mobile Health Expo in Las Vegas. It’s happening October 19,20, and 21st and it looks to be a really interesting conference with some really power players in the mobile healthcare market.
I’ll be “moderating” a couple sessions on Wednesday, but that’s just misuse of a term. I’m going to be introducing the speakers and opening it up for question and answers as needed. I of course will be doing the HITECH and mHealth session by Vince Kuraitis and then I also was asked to do the session titled “The Role of Mobile in Professional Marketing Programs” by Robert Kadar.
I must admit that I’ve gone pretty light on the mobile healthcare and mHealth coverage on this site. Hop...

I haven’t yet tasted apple peel on the breeze across the Colorado front range, but fall has definitely come to The EMT Spot. With that grand event behind us, I look forward to cultivating the new partnerships created under the Dallas sun and posting some great content.
I began this blog three years ago with a post entitled “First Cut (I mean draft).” I now have well over 1,000 posts (cuts which I hope haven’t been torture to endure) and many new friends. I have been interviewed because of my blog for both the medical and quilting components. I’ve even been interviewed by Dr. Anonymous. I have been included among the Better Health bloggers and gone to Las Vegas where I meet many of you in person. Thank you all for including me in the blogging community. (Source: Suture for a Living)

I just came back home from 38th Exhibition of Inventions Geneva held in Geneva, Switzerland. Among around a thousand inventions, including 55 from class M (Medicine, Surgery, Hygiene, Orthopedics, Materials for the handicapped), I have demonstrated my CPR device (you can see it in my presentation from Amsterdam). The whole experience was truly fantastic and made even sweeter at the end, since my invention was awarded a gold medal from the international jury. Big thank you goes out to people from Noven, StivTrade, Croatian Association of Inventors, and Istrian Inventors.
For a quick preview, take a look at the short video below. More media will follow. (Source: Ivor Kovic, M.D.)

Eric Jensen is a former middle school teacher and former adjunct professor for several universities including the University of California, San Diego. He co-founded the Learning Brain Expo, a conference for educators, and has written 21 books on the brain and learning. Jensen is currently completing his PhD coursework. His most recent book, Enriching the Brain: How to Maximize Every Learner's Potential (Jossey-Bass, 2006), is highly recommended for educators and parents alike. He wrote this recent article in Phi Delta Kappan in February 2008, sparking a healthy debate on the value of neuroscience applied to education.
Eric, thank you for your time. Can you explain the role that you and your organization play?

The National Commemorative Candle of Care Lighting Ceremony for Alzheimer's, sponsored by the Alzheimer's Foundation of America was celebrated today. Shining a light on Alzheimer's, and related illnesses, from coast to coast, people everywhere shared a day of caring. At the local Central Coast Senior's Center, San Luis Obispo, California, there were 27 candles lit, people gathered in a circle, shared prayers and memories, and Kristi Gott provided a speech with information about Alzheimer's and research. For the speech Kristi used quotations for emphasis from Eric Hall, CEO and founder of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, and from Carol Bradley Bursack, author of Minding Our Elders, both of whom write blogs at OurAlzheimers.com.After Kristi's prayer of thanks and hope for a cure, many p...

When is a medical podcast not a medical podcast?
When you’re interviewing two folks who blow standard definitions right out of the water. From the OC Podcasters‘ booth at the Podcast And New Media Expo, I was lucky enough to snag Tee Morris of Podcasting For Dummies fame, and Cirina Catania, a dear member of the family and multimedia content creator. Both brought years of experience to their interpretations of audio and video podcasting: what the media has become, where it’s headed, and what it does best.
Tee Morris is arguably the best known front man for the podcasting movement at the grass roots level. In addition to his passion for family, scotch of debatable quality, writing, writers, and public speaking, he loves teaching people how to podcast. Together with the equ...

I am looking forward to my first Podcast and New Media Expo this week in Ontario, California. My goals are to learn a lot and to meet lots of new people. Obviously, I will be promoting the Brain Science Podcast and Books and Ideas, but I also hope to make contacts that could lead to new opportunities in the field since my longterm goal is to build a new full-time career.
I will be meeting with fellow health and science podcasters on Thursday evening at 8PM at the entrance to the D Street Bar & Grill (located in the Marriott). (Updates)
I will be helping out at at the iProng booth on Saturday from noon until 2 PM. If you stop by to say Hi you can also play with an iPhone™ or the new iPod Touch™. (Source: the Brain Science Podcast and Blog with Dr. Ginger Campbell)
