I am not promising these things.
A motivational coach, consultant, therapist, and award-winning faculty member at Yale School of Medicine is. A guy named Michael V. Pantalon. He has a bunch of credentials like publishing articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association, so I read though his book, Instant Influence: How to Get Anyone to Do Anything—FAST with curiosity. I have a lot of projects that I was hoping he could help me with.
I have not had enough time to accurately test-drive his recipe of influence; however, I think I’m coming with a bit of a handicap considering my strong urge to want to please people. I only have to hear a vague “I don’t really see it that way,” to abandon my way and go with someone else’s. However,...

Throughout the years, sometimes it seems that the public has been iffy about psychology and psychologists. Part of the problem is a lack of knowledge. Past surveys have shown that many people have no idea what psychologists even do.
More recent research has found that the public largely views psychology in a positive light. But people still have a limited understanding of the discipline and don’t view it as a hard science.
A 1998 survey revealed that both adults and college faculty viewed the physical sciences more favorably. They believed that psychology — along with sociology — led to fewer critical contributions to society and had less expertise than the physical sciences.
How did psychology get this bad reputation?

The Nursing Shortage: A Big Disconnect

With the aging of America, it’s well known that there will be a shortage of registered nurses and nursing assistants to take care of the population. It’s predicted that the shortage of nurses in California will climb to 80,000 by 2015. California has just 653 registered nurses employed per 100,000 people.
One of the problems is a lack of qualified faculty to teach at nursing schools. California was forced to turn away 23,000 qualified applicants from nursing programs during 2008-2009. And this week Humboldt State University announced plans to discontinue the school’s nursing program because of financial concerns and inability to retain nursing faculty. Shortage of nurses and closing nursing programs — now there’s a big disconnect.

Start early, meaning getting toknow your organisation before your start date. You won’t be able to do it once started, finding the patient, your way around the hospital etc.
Minimize distractions. Be sure everything like housing, daycare options, installment of your Internet connection is taken care for before you start or organize it to be taken care of. The University of Georgia invites applications for three tenure-track positions in the biology of fungi and fungus-like organisms to join a highly interactive multi-departmental group of plant and microbial biologists.
1) The Department of Plant Biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences seeks applicants at the level of assistant professor, though candidates may also be considered at the level of early associate professor. We are especially interested in applicants studying the biology, genetics, cellular biology, functional genomics, phylogenomics or ecology of plant-associated fungi, including mycorrhizal fungi.

Besides patient care and education, research is also an important part of a med school. Funding and keeping a research department alive in medicine is very complicated. Below are some suggestions from a approach as published in a recent article from the Advances in Health Sciences Education. It’s my own interpretation of the suggestions made in this readable and excellent publication by Randy R. Brutkiewicz.

Jobs in fungal genomics

Trying a little experiment here. I've started a wiki page for jobs that fall into the general category of genomics, fungi, and evolution and added a tab link to this at the top of the blog site. At this point I am only posting academic positions (Faculty and postdoctoral positions) but it may be possible to include industry and government postings if there is sufficient interest.
You are welcome to sign up for a wiki account and add links for other positions.

There would be a few breathless entries. Then the entries would grow farther apart in time. Sometimes there were apologies for not keeping current. Then a short goodbye. Or, more often, an abrupt cessation.
Scott Swaner (1968-2006)
“People move on to other things, other projects,” a friend explained. “But we still have their words.”
One blogger’s name was Scott Swaner.
I found him the way one usually does in the post-millenium world. You do a search, or someone sends you a link. Somehow I became aware of a man who was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and died in 2006 at the age of 38.
I must confess: I have a thing for pancreatic cancer patients. W...

Humility yields to arrogance in firms that fail to nip its buds. Champions of modesty on the other hand can inspire an entire workplace to innovations that lead to growth. Some say you cannot make it to the top with mere meekness. Others say you’ll become the only one there and fall alone, if arrogance propelled you. What do you say?Brain based business works on the premise that people work harder, longer and better around unassuming leaders. A Jones 2000 study showed that people are 52% less likely to leave jobs where they receive respect. Ready to risk reducing arrogance at work? People shake hands with humility and activate brain cells for invention, when: 1. Doctors ask two-footed questions to collaborate with patients for care and cures.2. Faculty at university raise achievement b...

While science is shedding light on the brain at work … practice is far from benefiting from these dynamic insights. Take the simple fact that too much talk works against learning or growth. Here’s the skinny:1. Lectures and staff meetings often work against the human brain.2. The brain’s plasticity is limited when we simply hear – without doing.3. Learners walk in with 8 intelligences but engage few in lectures.4. To teach others as you learn – helps you retain 90% more than lectures.5. Lecture or delivery approaches perpetuate myths that limit human brains.6. It takes two footed questions to address a flat world.7. The brain is equipped with dendrites for competitive edge when engaged.8. It takes active learning to increase IQ, memory capacity and...

With growing college drop out rates … some say universities are losing their relevancy. Others say that neuroscience discoveries open unique opportunities to transform the brain’s capabilities into world class universities. What do you say? If learner retention is the key to a university distinctiveness … it makes sense to do what works to attract and keep learners. That raises the question … What goes on in distinctive universities? It boils down Roosevelt’s challenge to … take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. We know that distinctive universities … above all … try something to engage more learners. Yet research suggests we still have a way to go. How so? 1. Many higher education students st...

If you can imagine a university where:1. Learners enroll for its international vitality.2. Faculty exchange cutting edge ideas beyond class.3. Communities balance care with challenge and vision. You’ll want to compare how: 1. Learners drop out rates escalate from boredom2. Faculty ideas dim behind bulging bureaucracies3. Communities stifle talents for tired conventions. Then you’ll likely agree:1. Learner connections could dip deeper and broader.2. Faculty enthusiasm and passion could fuel growth.3. Communities could restructure to generate change. What would be your first step to: 1. Re-energized learners at university? 2. Faculty leaders who risk more than rant?3. Communities that progress and evolve often? (Source: BrainBasedBusiness)

Two-footed questions reboot the brain.4. Multiple intelligence strategies improve learning.5.
When people want you to consider rewriting "textbooks in physics, pharmacology and chemistry", you hope that they have good evidence behind it and some workable hypotheses with which to replace these erroneous and out-moded doctrines that have maintained a stranglehold in scientific and medical education. Sadly, it doesn't seem as if either the evidence or workable replacement mechanisms of action will be available any time soon so 'we mun dree oor wyrd' and hope for a paradigm shift to happen before error leads us into catastrophe. The House of Lords has appointed a committee to investigate allergy and intolerance in the UK.
