Arne Duncan Embraces False Friedman

By Neal McCluskeyIn a shocking development, U.S. Secretary of Arne Duncan embraced the ideas of Milton Friedman today, championing the funding of students instead of schools! Unfortunately, it was in the context of higher education — Duncan and his boss have done all they can to destroy school choice elsewhere — and he completely misrepresented what Friedman said about higher ed, suggesting that the Nobel Laureate somehow endorsed the federal Direct Loan Program:
We will end the loans under the Federal Family Education Program and make them directly to students — just as economist Milton Friedman proposed 50 years ago, and just as the Department of Education has been doing since 1993 through the Direct Loan Program.
Were Milton Friedman still with us, I think he w...

Understandably, the public is a little preoccupied right now with efforts in Washington to “reform” health care by making it much, much worse. Fortunately, people are starting to notice that a congressional bum rush is heading right toward them — maybe they’ll be able stop it in time. Unfortunately, that is giving Washington a chance to sneak some other stuff by us.
In particular, I’m thinking of the just-introduced Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act. It’s been largely ignored so far, save a little chatter about the community college stuff it incorporates. In a simpler time, it would have generated a lot more copy. After all, it will:

end federally backed student loans that come through private companies, and instead make Uncle Sam the universal lender;

UW launches study to treat infants without symptoms, reports the January 2nd Seattle Post-Intelligencer in an article by Paul Nyhan:

The University of Washington launched one of the nation’s first studies on preventing autism in infants Wednesday and will spend the next four years exploring the benefit of intensive and early therapy on the mysterious disorder.

The university’s Autism Center is now looking for 200 local families to join the study of autism, which is diagnosed in 1 out of 150 children, according to the latest study by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study is unusual because autism research and treatment has typically focused on treating or reversing but not preventing the neurological disorder. Autism often emerges when a child i...

This I can understand:

Parents in the Cherry Hill, NJ, school district called for the resignation of the special education director Israela Franklin at a school board meeting on Tuesday night. Parents were concerned (if not, it seems, outraged) over a padded room at Russell Knight Elementary School in Cherry Hill.

This is still hard to grasp; outrage seems understandable.

Between August 2004 and June 2007, Shianne Verness embezzled more than 40 thousand dollars from an autism organization, the RT Autism Awareness Foundation, and transferred the money to a personal account. Yesterday, November 29th, Verness was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 10 years of probation, and 500 hours of community service.

It was a long time ago that Charlie was able to sit in the front of a shopping cart; it has also been sometime since I was able to lift him into the front seat and maneuver his long legs around the metal bar. Grocery shopping was a simpler matter in those days when Charlie (who also did not talk much, or seem to notice too much—he was still 3 and under) was stuck in his perch on the cart. Now he can help himself to ice cream, or sushi, and he is tall enough to reach for the kind of relish he wants. I don’t have time to shop when he is in school as I’m at work and there is too much to learn at the grocery store: Identifying foods and household items; navigating the crowded space of the supermarket while pushing a cart or carrying a basket; “staying by mom”; wai...

The “top story” in the September 17th Newsweek is entitled You and Your Quirky Kid and might also have been called “To diagnose or not to diagnose: That is the question.” Writer Lorraine Ali opens the article by discussing her own 4-year-old son who is one among the 13 other kids who, when he is to sing “Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing” for a preschool musical, broke ranks and began marching to his own tune (involving him singing something about “babies and broccoli”). Ali’s son is already “different” at the age of 4, but is he a “nonconformist kid” or does he have—ought he to have—a diagnosis of ADHD or autism spectrum disorder?
A district diagnositician from the Forth Worth public school district said that Sam Peters was not autistic—-he was later diagnosed with PDD-NOS by the Child Study Center in Fort Worth and Mental Health Mental Retardation of Tarrant County. According to the August 13th Star-Telegram, his parents, Jon and Jessica Peters, decided to move to the Keller school district where Sam initially did well in a four-student classroom, with a teacher trained to work with autistic children. But then, another “district diagnostician” said that “Sam doesn’t have autism. The family’s request for an independent evaluation was refused; the Peters sued the school district but lost their due process hearing.
Sam will not receive special education services in the Keller distri...

Over a year ago, Betsy Loiacono’s 7-year-old autistic son was assaulted on a school bus. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); an extended absence and a gradual return to school were recommended by the doctor, and Loiacono requested home instruction from the Houston School District. Terri Mauro at Parenting Special Children notes that this then happened:
The district countered with two choices for his mother: Get him back into school full-time now, or sign him out for good and homeschool him yourself. When she agreed to neither, she was arrested for violating truancy laws.
Loiacono was arrested on May 18th by the Houston County Sheriff’s office; her case against the Houston School District has been going on for over a year. She presents her case on her w...

“So who do you think sat in the chair next to Charlie at the barber’s?” Jim asked me. Charlie, sporting a fine buzz cut, had seated himself at the kitchen table with a bag from McDonald’s.
As testament to how close a parent can be to her child, I came down with the stomach thing Charlie had earlier this week and spent the better part of Saturday in bed, and therefore my response to Jim’s answer to his own question was less….. elaborate than it might have been. This was Jim’s answer:
“[Name of special education director of the town we used to live in who suggested a helmet; deemed an aide suitable for Charlie even though she had not spent one minute with him or spoken to us because she had worked with a certain other student in the class; hire...
