Egg Farming and the Salmonella Recall

The New York Times invited me to contribute to its “Room for Debate” feature on the big egg recall and here is an excerpt from my reply:
…Advocates cite the current outbreak, at last report limited to two related Iowa egg farms, as reason to enact pending legislation that would intensify federal regulation of food-making in the name of safety. Large food and agribusiness companies have generally signed off on most of the new proposals as acceptable. Many smaller producers, on the other hand, suspect there will be less room for them, and for local variety generally, in this reassuring new world of business and government cooperation.
I go on to cite the CPSIA debacle, in which a safety enactment devastated small producers of children’s goods while entrenching some ...

From Poop to Power: Waste Fuels Chicken Farm

At Olivera Egg Ranch in French Camp, California, chicken poop will soon be fueling a mini-power plant. The chicken waste will be be converted into methane gas, which will then be converted into renewable energy. The plant will be able to power the entire ranch — making it a closed loop system. Wouldn’t it be great if all farms could function like this?
Do you think that new homes will ever come with a system that converts human waste into renewable energy? How likely do you think this is?

…you think Schrute Farms actually exists because you read its more than 600 reviews on TripAdvisor. (It doesn’t. It’s a made-up B&B on a pretend beet farm outside Honesdale, Pennsylvania owned by Dwight Schrute and his cousin Mose, who are characters on NBC’s “The Office.”)
From yesterday’s New York Times: “Not everyone gets the joke. Recently, TripAdvisor added a caveat explaining that Schrute Farms was fictional, Ms. Petersen said. “We had a complaint from someone who had wanted to go there.” – Christine Petersen, Chief Marketing Officer for TripAdvisor

Three things we like, in no particular order, from Blisstree to you:

Fat Toad Farm – Goats’ milk caramel sauce (cajeta) from a family-run dairy in Vermont. Skip dinner.
Scarlett Johansson’s Mail – The seductive starlet sent a letter to Representative George Miller of California’s 7th District urging Congress to support the The Healthy School Meals Act of 2010.
RedLaser – An iPhone app that lets you bargain hunt: Use it to scan the barcode of items in a store and find out how much they’re going for online.

The 27 turbines in the Bluegrass Ridge
dedicated in September
in February spilled over
into a fistfight, then a lawsuit.
A third of a mile from Charles Porter’s home –
the sound of blades swooshing
through air, driving his family
crazy. The turbines emit a low,
humming vibration. Some compare
it to a train that never arrives…

Get the code:-Cut and pastefrom this littleboxy thing below Many positive, happy and optimistic people enjoy sharing their triumphs with others and like to list the many things that they are truly and genuinely grateful for. Other people, miserable, cynical pessimists, have to try a lot harder. It’s a jolly short list.1. I am grateful for the opportunity to further beautify my garden with the addition of small fencing to edge the flower beds. Additionally, although it only reaches as high as Thatcher’s ankles we are confident that it will serve as a visual reminder and barrier. Hopefully the strawberries will remain in the earth. Should this campaign fail we are quite certain that baths for Mr. Muddy will prove a more aversive reinforcement.2. I am grateful for the many useless coupons...

I did a post on Thistle Farms just recently, and you can go to their site to learn more - in short, Magdalene provides residential support for women trying to get out of prostitution and/or drug abuse, and Thistle Farms is a small bath/body product business that those same women work for, with the sale of the products supporting Magdalene. Renee of Womanist Musings and Monica did this awesome interview with a couple of women from Magdalene/Thistle Farms, which you can listen to here.
There’s a point in the broadcast in which I might possibly have teared up. a little. shut up.
There’s also an uncomfortable and worthwhile bit in the middle on the question of whether transgender women would be welcomed at Magdalene.
Something I learned from the show: they currently have a one y...

Pistachio Recall Widened

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already issued a recall for roasted pistachio nuts from the Setton Farms plant in Terra Bella, California, but now they have widened their warning to include raw nuts as well. They found enough salmonella to believe there may be some “cross-contamination between the raw and roasted products.”

At this point, I’m dumping anything I have with pistachios, but I may just be over cautious. The FDA also says this recall is not related to the peanut butter scare we had recently.
