Dry and Frizzy hair 1Healthy hair is sign of Good health.

Healthy hair is a sign of good health. Hair is not in good condition when the cuticle layer is lifted and damaged. Hair is healthy hair where cuticle layers are tight and are in perfect shape giving a sleek and shiny look. Dry and frizzy hair is tough to maintain - the moisture is lost so hair appears very rough, under-nourished and dull. Weather affects the hair as humidity also causes frizziness. Using correct hair products for hair care can resolve the problem. Using products rich in silicone can help to maintain hair well in humid weather.

Today I discovered a massive amount of information — massive definitely in comparison with what I had known up till now — about my own grandparents. I discovered this information this afternoon while wandering through the Museum’s Wedded Perfection exhibit, consisting of wedding dresses of various past times. My grandmother’s wedding dress is among them, and is stunning to see. With any luck I will remember to paste it into this post at the end.
Today, I read the book that accompanies the exhibition and found out: not only were my grandparents married in 1906, but on May 26th. Her father and her uncles ran a slaughterhouse; pigs, mostly. She was at least 26 — I couldn’t do the mental arithmetic on the dates. She was tiny, much more so than I remember, but then havin...

Lately I’ve been really interested in the idea of wearing more modest, yet stylish clothes. Some people call it “modern modest” when you show less cleavage and wear longer skirts, but without the frumpy dresses that makes you look like you’ve walked off the set of Little House on the Prairie. You want to look nice and attractive, but without giving away the whole enchilada, you know? Luckily, it’s not too hard to find things in regular stores, like my favorites, including Anne Taylor LOFT, Banana Republic, and J. Crew, or even more affordable department stores like J.C. Penny or Kohl’s.
But I decided to take a look to see if there were any stores that specialized in only modern modest clothing. As it happens, there are! In fact, I found this really aweso...

I cannot get rid of my cancer. But lately I’ve wanted to get rid of things that remind me of my cancer.
Prior to my diagnosis, I felt like everyday objects could hold power. A glittery ribbon on a package sent by my best friend had the ability to make me feel more powerful in the world. Coveting the ribbon, I’d set it on top of my dresser and look at it daily. But I’m not that gal anymore. Cancer has obliterated a lot of my desire and ability to feel things on a deeper level. I’ve got enough sensations and emotions flying around in my head thanks to medically induced hyperthyroidism. In response to this overload, I want to scale down keeping things simple. I don’t have the energy to feel so attached to objects and sentiments. The ribbon is now a ribbon – not...

Much like this blog, I seem to be in a constant state of an identity crisis. I am a hodge-podge of different ideas, different styles, different themes, and while that’s all well and good for me, it makes it rather difficult to present myself to anyone else.
Late last year, I became obsessed with style blogs. Fashion blogs, specifically. I subscribed to about two dozen and I even attended a fashion blogger event on the Lower East Side during Fashion Week. It was kind of nuts, because I haven’t ever been a fashion blogger and style is probably the one thing I have yet to cover in this mish-mash of different topics. Fitness? Check. Food? Check? Travel? Check. My thoughts on the latest issue of Vogue or what Mary-Kate Olsen was spotted wearing last Wednesday? Not so much…

Our old ones are patched past the point of recognition, but that doesn’t mean we need to trash them. Ecouterre suggests 6 ingenious ways that people have recycled denim.
1. Insulation. Bonded Logic makes nontoxic insulation out of 90% post-consumer denim fibers. Find out how to donate your jeans here.
2. Corsets. A limited edition collection of corsets made from recycled denim is being made by Eden by Cyan Rein, and the proceeds will benefit Australia’s Children’s Medical Research Institute. Donate your denim here.
3. Sneakers. An Australian denim company created a line of sneakers made out of preworn jeans.
4. Furniture. If you m...

Women Over 40 Take Over Magazines

September is the month of the 40-plus woman – or, at least in the world of women’s magazine covers, anyway. Doree Shafrir of The Hollywood Insider first pointed out the over-40 domination, and Jezebel also wrote about the trend. Older women, which in magazine years, usually seems to mean women over drinking age, are finally getting the attention they deserve: Shockingly, women over 40 are all over the covers of September magazines. (Yes, we said women over 40.)
Here’s a preview of the oldies you can expect to see gracing the covers of top fashion magazines (and just how old those cover models really are):
Elle – Julia Roberts (42 years old)
Vogue – Halle Berry (44 years old)
Harper’s Bazaar – Jennifer Aniston (41 years old)

Newspapers suck. Not only are they good for just one day, but they’re delivered inside those long plastic bags that you can’t use for anything else. That is, unless you’re a designer for Garbage of Eden, in which case you turn those useless plastic bags into clever, multicolored bangles. These handmade accessories turn unnecessary waste into essential style, and with three different color patterns, you can match them with pretty much anything.
Have a look. And if you like what you see, buy them right here, right now on Blisstree through our partners at the OpenSky Project.
Take your pick for $17 each:

Underwear: For something so simple, it sure can get complicated. There are infinite style, color, and fabric combinations, and if you get the wrong mix you could be in for disasters of the static-cling, wedgie, or (gasp) visible panty-line variety.
An post we found on Divine Caroline discussed how to make it seem like you wear sexy underwear when you really stick to tried-and-true granny panties. The author suggests just buying a few pairs of sexy bikinis or thongs, then leaving them on a drying rack in your bathroom for all of your guests to see. We guess that works. Or you could assume that not too many people are curious about your underwear, but it’s always fun to dream.
We want to know (anonymously, of course): What kind of underwear do you wear?

Recently, a colleague handed me an article entitled, “10 Signs You Work In a Fear-Based Workplace.” I chuckled as I started reading, then gasped. My office fit eight of the ten signs listed.
I knew my office was kooky. But isn’t everyone’s? I’d been working there for about three months, and my first hint that things were a little odd was when my boss led me into a conference room and, in hushed tones, asked me about an e-mail our vice president had sent. “What do you think Paul meant in his email?” she asked. This must be some sort of trick question, I decided. I answered, “Um, what he wrote in the email?” Silly me. Turns out, the V.P. meant exactly the opposite of what he had written. “You have to read between the lines,” said my boss, as if this explaine...

We’ve heard of cork board, cork shoes, even cork furniture. But there’s another eco-friendly product made of recycled cork that we hadn’t heard of until now — cork purses. But, man — were we missing out. We love the understated elegance of Peasants and Travelers‘ cork Doctor’s Bag, which we found while browsing Eco Salon.
It’s fashioned from remnants of wine bottle corks from Portugal that have been smashed and laminated, but the material is flexible and waterproof. The rest of the bag is made from reclaimed materials, like its cotton dress shirt lining. And at $150, it’s a forever piece that isn’t too much of an investment.

photo: Thinkstock
Even Walmart is selling bamboo clothing and textiles, which touts them as an easy, inexpensive way to buy green. Bamboo is the fastest growing wood-ish plant in the world, and most of it is grown organically without using fertilizers or irrigation. This all sounds very eco-friendly, until it comes time to actually make the bamboo into fabric.
Most bamboo fabrics are basically rayon. The process most widely used to create bamboo fabric (and rayon) is called viscose, which involves taking the fiber (in this case, bamboo), and dissolving it in a strong solvent to make a thick, gummy solution. Then, that’s shoved through a spinneret and into a quenching solution that solidifies the goop into a fiber. Unfortunately, the solvent used in this process is a toxic chemical ca...

10 Things We Want to Do This Weekend

After a short week, the weekend came as a pleasant surprise to us here at Blisstree. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have a ton of things we want to fit in over the next few days:

Have some chocolate.
Even if it’s just a little square, we’ll be having a bite of chocolate this weekend. It was its birthday, we have to. It would be rude not to.

Go camping.
We’re ready to head out into the great outdoors and rough it for a night or two. But only with our eco-friendly camping supplies, of course.

Read some foodie lit.
We love reading about food almost as much as we love eating it (okay, maybe not that much). We might even read some good advice about how to eat well without gaining weight.

Have a snack.
Sometimes you just feel like snacking. We’ll be ...

We have a new girl crush and her name is ecochick. She’s based in Canada and runs an earthy-friendly shopping blog. She recommends cool books (like Organic Manifesto by Maria Rodale), tells us about pretty reusable water bottles (from SIGG and OtterBottle), and alerts us to uber-chic reusable shopping bags from companies including T Bag & Co. and Flip and Tumble. We like to think of ecochick as our go-to green shopping guru. so ecochick, will you be our new BFF?

I’m not a handy guy. Nope. Don’t call me if there’s a leak, or a loose electrical doodad. My toolbox consists of a butter knife, a credit card, and a sledgehammer. I have no finesse at all when it comes to mechanical things. I have never even tried to open the hood of my car. If the air conditioning doesn’t work I wait for winter. I have no carpentry skills. If the door to the bathroom rubs on the floor — that’s the way it is going to stay. My favorite Beatles song is “Let it Be.” I hum this as I notice all the things that need repair.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
Clothes look good on thin bodies. But thin bodies naked? Not so much. Naked full bodies is another matter. Or near-naked, a la actress Christina Hendricks in a corset on the cover of New York Magazine.
Hendricks, a breakout star of AMC’s hit show “Mad Men,” is undeniably beautiful. She’s also a different body type than we’re used to seeing in the glamor factories of Los Angeles and New York. But then “Mad Men” is a period drama, set half a century ago.
It may be relevant that most fashion designers are gay men. Thin women look more male than their voluptuous counterparts in the general population. My recollection was that the ultra-thin trend began in the late 1960s with the iconic model known as Twiggy, an...

This week I assimilated a tremendous amount of fashion knowledge from my fashionisto friend, who hopped on a plan this morning to return to Philly. He’s my best friend from high school and was also my best man at my wedding, and we always have a good time hanging out together. I’ve known about his fashion expertise for many years, but until this week it remained an area where we never chose to connect.
I jokingly told him that teaching me about fashion was payback for all those evenings I helped him with his calculus homework during our senior year in high school. After 20 years I think we can call it even now.
My head is still swirling with the different concepts I learned this week — low rise, slim fit, boot cut, spread collar, etc. It’s going to take me many mor...

An old friend of mine is visiting Vegas this week, and he’s been teaching me about fashion. Yesterday we went shopping together at the Forum Shops in Caesar’s Palace. I tried on different clothes while he explained some of the basic principles of fashion to me. We plan to go out again this evening. It’s been a very eye-opening experience for me.
For many years I shunned fashion completely. I’ve long considered fashion to be a complete waste of time, a pointless distraction for those whose temporal and financial abundance greatly exceeds their intellectual abundance.
This attitude is fairly common in the computer gaming industry where I worked for many years. Even if I was doing a presentation at a tech conference, “modern schlub” was perfectly acceptable...

It's not difficult to make beaded jewelry and it can also be fun; a lot of people make jewelry to give as handmade jewelry gifts to family and friends or to sell as a source of extra income.
If you can develop some skill in jewelry making, then you can do the same. You can make just about any sort of jewelry you want from beads. You can create beaded earrings, necklace , bracelet and more easily. In fact, once you get the hang of making your own beaded jewelry, you'll be able to craft pieces which are of the same quality as those you can buy in shops! One of the best things about making beaded jewelry is that you can make your own jewelry to wear; you'll never have to puzzle over what will go with that outfit you want to wear, since you can make the perfect piece yourself!
You can also c...

I survived a head-on collision.
Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but I wanted to get your attention. Although I indeed was involved in a minor, fender-bender type of head-on collision, I was stopped at the time and the car that hit me was going about 3 or 4 mph. The other driver, distracted by trying to do something on her cell phone, made a right-hand turn very wide, right into my lane as I was coming out of the side street she was turning in to.
She was an older woman and looked very much like someone’s grandmother. Impeccably dressed for summer in Newburyport fashion, she was driving a Volvo station wagon. After she hit me, it took a full 2 or 3 seconds for what she had just done to register on her face. It felt like time stood still during the entire 10 seconds of the accident...

Women can be their own worst enemy sometimes. The fashions that we put up with can cause pain and even disfigurement if we’re slaves to certain fads. We don’t have to look too far back to learn about women who were disfigured in the name of beauty. For hundreds of years, the practice of foot binding was common place in China. The idea was to bind the feet of young girls to form them into tiny, more desirable feet. The practice only ended in the early 1900s.
Although not as dramatic as foot binding, we can’t say that we don’t do harmful things to our bodies anymore, all in the name of beauty. Just look at the precarious high heels that many women wear that are known to cause problems like hammertoes and bunions.
Believe it or not though, it’s not just shoes. Do...

New outfit for Hildy
Today I’m finally heading back home. And I can’t tell you how much I want to go get home. Not because I’m tired of seeing my family. But rather because of the lack of control over my coming and goings, especially being woken up in the morning
I thought if I spent a longer period of time here the pace would be a bit more relaxed. And at times it has been, but when you’ve lived with a chronic illness for over two decades the slighest deviation of my routine, in particular, sleep patterns.
Two screaming girls this morning didn’t help.
What I realized is that I really need a car. My family is spread out across the city and I’m held hostage or dependent on someone giving me a lift. The other is that I need at least for three days a hotel ...

Jacqueline is such a good friend, she has her own "category" on my blog: Rebel Fashion. Click on that link to read all my posts about Jacqueline, who has been making my clothes since Labor Day weekend 2007, which is when I finally abandoned my breast prosthesis, Jabba. Jacqueline lives in Brooklyn, New York, in a loft with her husband and two very sweet cats. Well, "sweet" may not be the right word, but two very lovable cats. She's an artist, a breast cancer survivor, and she makes the most amazing clothing and jewelry for women who have had breast cancer ... Of course, you can buy her clothes even if you haven't had cancer, they are that great. Her clothing line is called "Rhea Belle" (say that slowly. Now say it quickly.
Jacqueline gave me this stuffed bunny as a gift during her recent visit to Seattle. It's made from Japanese kimono fabrics, and she got it at a shop/gallery in the International District called Kobo. If you look closely at the bowl next to the bunny, you will see a bunny rabbit there too. I bought this bowl in an antique store in Kumamoto on a recent trip to Japan (well, three or four years ago now...is that recent?). I seem to have a rabbit theme going here.
Fashions change; hems go up and down, ties get thick and thin, lapels point and round. The simple fact of fashion and MS is that sometimes it’s just hard to get into them!
As I’ve mentioned, I’m using my recovery as prep for “the big one.” One of the biggest, fundamental issues I’ve faced over the past 7 weeks is dressing myself. The first problem I discovered post-op was bathing myself (there’s something about the side of a tub and hip surgery that don’t go so well together but I eventually got that one figured out).
Most of the dressing issues I’ve faced in the past couple of months have had to do with what goes on or below the legs.
Lifting my right leg is much easier now, but raising it even enough to slide on a pair of sweat pants ...

Jacqueline arrived in Seattle on Friday night, and, as it
was dark and raining, I asked Car Guy to drive to the airport with me (to do
the driving, natch, because I am a rain-and-darkness wimp when it comes to I-5,
our local freeway).Jacqueline arrived on time, and I’ve been keeping her busy
ever since—talking nonstop, walking Connie in the park and picking up autumn
leaves, going to a dinner with Car Guy and his son, and doing an interview with
a South Korean TV crew on Sunday.

So Jacqueline hasn’t had a chance to do any of the touristy
things yet: Pioneer Square, the International District, with a stop at
Uwajimaya, and the Pike Place Market. I also want to take her up the Space
Needle at dusk, and for a ride on a ferry. We’ll see how many of these things we
manage to do.Monday ...

Commentary: T-shirt depicts ‘pathetic and brutal legacy’ - CNN.com
How Che became such a revered superhero of the hard-core left is laughable. First of all, he wasn’t even a good revolutionary. He failed in his attempt at world revolution almost as badly as communism has failed in the places it was actually tried.
“This is a history of a failure” is how he himself described his efforts in the Congo. He was killed in Bolivia, trying to fire up another failure of a war. Earlier, he even managed to drop his gun and shoot himself in the face.

Jacqueline, my good friend in Brooklyn, has a new slideshow to highlight her Rebel1in8 clothing line for one-breasted women (also no-breasted, and she will sell clothes to women who have both breasts ... she doesn't discriminate, but I'm getting off topic here).

Jacqueline has a couple of photos of me in the slideshow wearing a beautiful shirt she made for me. The slideshow also stars Laurie and another woman named Megan who I don't know.

Watch: Rebel1in8/Rhea Belle slideshow

New Earrings
Jacqueline is making me a new pair of earrings in the same style as those pictured here, except with amber beads in place of the turquoise. I wear the turquoise ones almost everyday, and when I was in New York with Younger Son a couple of months ago, Jacqueline restrung them for me, just to be safe...

Shall I take HRT?The pendulum swings backwards and forwards.Too many women are missing out on hormone replacement therapy because of "overhyped" safety concerns, an international group of experts warns. At a global summit held in Zurich by the International Menopause Society, experts concluded younger healthy women should have no fears about taking HRT in the first few years of menopause to relieve symptoms. BBCOh! Goody, I will prescribe it more frequently.Menopausal women who use oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT) more than double their risk of blood clots, French scientists say. (BBC)Oh! Dear. I must stop prescribing it.Following recent studies linking HRT to ill-health, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said it advised women to use the lowest dose which gives sy...

Threadless is a hugely popular online apparel store mostly famous for its creative t-shirt designs. What is unique about it is that members from all over the world submit designs online, which are then put to a public vote. Almost all of the submissions are brilliant, because they are mainly the work of professional designers or very talented passionates, but only a small percentage of submitted designs are selected for printing and sold through the store. This process ensures a higher quality of the final product, design version of peer review in scientific journals.
I have been following submissions to the store for a while and have noticed that quite a substantial number of designs that end up being sold on Threadless are inspired by medicine, anatomy, dentistry, scienc...

I’m fairly young (well, early 30s) so they look to me as the expert on what the hip kids are boogieing on down to in groovetown.
Of course, I’m always up for increasing my knowledge base, so I thank Mental Patient About Town for pointing out that the Daily Mail has put its finger on the pulse of emo, and has worked it all out.

Hannah was a happy 13-year-old until she became an ‘emo’ - part of a sinister teenage craze that romanticises death. Three months later she hanged herself. Here, her devastated mother tells other parents: No child is safe

In theory this is a great thing. In practice it means I've been up to 2-2:30 am every night madly sewing stuff to sell. I've got lavender owls (Nighty Night Owls), little zippered pouches, fabric magnets and fabric grocery bags.I seriously lost my mind and bought a total shit load of incredibly beautiful designer fabric (like several hundred dollars worth [I am a total fabric whore at the best of times but I went overboard with this]) planning to make billions of these bags.
Yesterday, when I was out having my adventures (ah, hem) with the car, I was beautifully dressed in a gray cotton wrap that Jacqueline of Rebel1in8 made for me.

See the top: The graceful wrap

I'm traveling out to New York (by Amtrak!) with Younger Son to see Jacqueline later this month, and I will take this top along. I need to get Jacqueline to teach me all the ways to wrap it, because it looks quite different depending on how you wrap and tie the long front ends.

I really love this shirt. I wore it yesterday with an olive vest and my gathered Japanese pants (photo to come, soon I hope), and I looked great.

Sing the above line to the tune of "Red, red wine ... " (Who sings that song? Anybody know?)

I just noticed as I was unpacking after my trip to Tucson (OK, the trip was three weeks ago, but that's how long it takes me to unpack. Live with it) that I now have three pairs of red shoes. Well, two pairs of red shoes and one of red sandals.

When did this happen? I don't think of myself as a red shoes kind of person, but somewhere along the way I guess I became one.

I also have a red car--the Corvair--and gorgeous red earrings, a one-of-a-kind pair made for me by my friend Jacqueline of Rebel1in8.

Then there are the one-of-a-kind clothes that Jacqueline has made for me. I love having clothes that no one else has. I was never a clothes horse either, and don't think that I'm one now, exactl...

I am so excited! Jacqueline, the only one of you cancer bloggers that I've met face-to-face, is coming to the Cancer Bloggers Reunion in July.

I visited Jacqueline in New York over the Labor Day weekend, and she made me some fabulous clothes and earrings. I just got another pair of earrings from her in the mail on Friday, which I had ordered through her online store. I will try to put up a photo of these soon.

The turquoise earrings she made for me earlier have become my signature earrings--no one else in Seattle has a pair. The coral ones are very similar, the same length (to the shoulder), which works really well with short hair like mine--although my hair is getting longer. I have abandoned the buzz cut for now. And my hair is curling at the back--which is new. Chemo hair, I guess...

Yesterday, I got myself two new pairs of shoes. The soles were nice and new, all textured rubber and Vibram and form-fitting. One pair is even totally vegetarian: rubber products and cloth. I didn’t know that you could get vegetarian shoes, but evidently it’s its own category in the shoe world. Maybe my shoe-buying subconscious is trying to go green. I wonder even if there is any proof (probably there is) whether vegetarian shoes require fewer resources than leather shoes.
As I was walking out of the store with big package in hand, I flashed onto a memory of a ritual that my father and I would enact every time that I got new shoes when I was a girl. This was back in the days of the early and mid sixties, when they still made shoes with real leather soles. If you’re too yo...

A package arrived from Jacqueline in yesterday's mail. I was having a bad day, so I set it aside to open today.

Things have been a bit out of whack around here. I'm feeling punk from the radiation therapy, and in pain from the mets, and the weather is rapidly changing from summer to fall, and I'm not ready. My long list of summer projects is nowhere near completed. In addition, the trip to Vancouver and my meeting with JS were a disappointment, and I've been down over that.

But I've been in this kind of funk before, and I know how to deal with it. So I've started painting the living room, doing just one section of wall a day. It will take me close to a week to finish, most likely, since I also need to do the window seats, which are tricky. (Photos to come.)

But it will be worth it. Fr...

Here's another one-of-a-kind piece that Jacqueline made for me.

I took the sweater, a black, stretch velvet that I've had for several years, with me when I went to visit Jacqueline in New York a few weeks ago. We looked through the samples she has in the loft, and I chose one similar to this as a model for Jacqueline to follow.

The sweater should be on its way to me as I write this, and I can't wait. It's the perfect weight for the Seattle fall (at least on clear days), and I think the button really makes it.

Of course, my second home is Japan, and the Japanese look of that button really appeals to me.

It's been more than two weeks since I retired Jabba, my right boob, and I don't miss him at all. In fact, I am sitting in the window of a coffee shop in Vancouver, B.C., wearing a sl...

It's been more than two weeks since I retired Jabba, my right boob, and I don't miss him at all.

I don't feel embarrassed to go out in public, and, amazingly, no one seems to notice that I don't have a right breast. If people DO stare, I assume they are looking at the great clothes Jacqueline has made for me. Or they are admiring my smile and my sunny attitude!

Talk about coming out of the closet. Another bonus--my back bothers me much less than it did when I wore Jabba. I think because Jabba was uncomfortable, I was fidgeting and fussing and it caused stress and tightness in my upper back.

That's gone now.

Here's the latest of the designs Jacqueline of Rhea Belle has made for me. She e-mailed me the photos, so the shirt isn't in my hands yet. (Wish my waist was anywhere close to as ...

In my last post’s comments section a few of you hoped that it might be possible to permanently integrate Lulu into The Kranki Krash Pad since Yoshi was much better with this visit. Believe me, I was watching for all the signs this might happen. Sadly, I know that Yoshi and Lulu are better off where they are right now. Lulu is far more confident and outgoing with her sister dog, Xiola. On her own she is nervous and prone to separation anxiety and follows me everywhere. She whimpers at the door when I am in the bathroom, for poop’s sake. She also seems upset and a little afraid by Yoshi’s hissing and spitting. I am sure this is something I could work on over time but she is so obviously happier with another dog to give her comfort and companionship. Yoshi, while much better, was cle...

You say ree-bel, I say reb-el.

No matter how you pronounce it, Rebel1in8 and the Rhea Belle line of clothing and jewelry are revolutionary.

Jacqueline Skaggs and I met through our cancer blogs and our mutual distaste for pink ribbon marketing (See Boycott October). She is a breast cancer survivor, and also an artist, and a jewelry and clothing designer.

Jacqueline's clothing and her jewelry are political. The beading on the jewelry "represents the 2004 statistic 'one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,'" Jacqueline says. But the message is subtle. You can wear the jewelry because you want to make a political statement about the growing numbers of women diagnosed with breast cancer, or you can wear them because you like the elegant designs, or both.

Jacqueline des...

This is MY shirt.

Jacqueline made it for me Labor Day weekend when I went to visit her in New York. I wore it to Coney Island on Labor Day, and it was my first trip out in public without my prosthesis in the nine years since my mastectomy (except for a couple of times that I accidentally ran out of the house without Jabba, the prosthesis, because I was in a hurry).

I'm wearing this shirt now as I type. I wore it again to head down to Pioneer Square in Seattle last Saturday to get a massage.

It's a great shirt--comfortable to wear and a perfect rosy-red color. You can wrap it four or five different ways, which is fun.

See Jeanne's red wrap, back view.

This great shirt was a custom design Jacqueline made just for me when I was visiting her in New York.

The purpose of my visit was to meet her, as we'd been corresponding by e-mail and through our blogs for almost a year, and to order some clothes, since I had decided to retire Jabba, my prosthesis, and go out in public as a one-breasted woman.

The shirt is large, and with the loose cowl can be worn all sorts of ways. It is a variation of the white Comfy Cotton Summer Cowl that Jacqueline has in her slide show and also in her online store. As you can see from the photo, if you LOOK, you will notice that I don't have a right breast, but with the way the shirt drapes it is not obvious. I feel comfortable in public like this.

See the Caged Bird T.

Here's what Jacqueline says about this T-shirt:

I made this T-shirt specifically for the 2006 ny susan g. komen walk in Central Park. i was opposed to the over-sized and over-printed-with-sponsors T-shirts so at the last minute i whipped up this song bird. the printed fabric is from a T-shirt that I purchased at Urban Outfitters and sacrificed for the race, the cause. It's pretty awkward at the neckline but I still embrace its crafty spontaneous edges.

When I was in New York visiting Jacqueline over the Labor Day weekend, I asked her to make me two T-shirts in this design, one brown and one pale yellow. I'll post photos of them when they arrive.

I'm sending Jacqueline a yellow Japanese furoshiki with a design of samurai faces to use for the inset on the shirt. It...

I choose these earrings from a whole row of similar ones that Jacqueline had hanging in her studio. That was last weekend, Labor Day weekend, and I haven't taken them off since except to shower or to sleep.

The turquoise beads look like tiny images of Earth, and the larger rose quartz bead (the one in eight) matches the beads in my rebel necklace, so I can wear them together. And I love the length, they are the longest earrings I have--just to the shoulder.

The rebel earrings in turquoise and rose quartz cost $30, plus shipping.

Jacqueline's description:
These 4-inch rebel shoulder dusters are made with 6 mm turquoise beads, 8 mm rose quartz beads, glass seed beads, and sterling sliver.

There are no bumperstickers on my car. No cute "words of wisdom" framed and hanging on my walls. No T-shirts with political slogans or beer ads in my drawer. And, as my friends and regular readers know, I HATE pink ribbons.

I'm not the kind of woman who shows who she is with symbols and slogans, to say the least.

But there is one exception--My Rebel 1in8 necklace, made by my blogger friend, artist, and fashion designer, Jacqueline.

I love the combination of a funky flattened bottle cap and a string of elegant beads. One of the eight beads is a different color, for the one in eight U.S. women who will get breast cancer if they live to be in their 80s.

Jacqueline's mission is to "spread breast cancer awareness while rebelling against the fears and social side effects that are bound ...

I have just finished a cross-stitching marathon lasting a full 7 hours. I cannot quite believe this but the clock tells me it is true. I was recently turned on to cross-stitch by Julie at www.subversivecrossstitch.com and haven’t stopped since. And then to add to the madness I bought a cross-stitch pattern program online where I can make my own patterns as well. Frankly, I cannot be stopped. Family and friends may as well know now that they will be getting some sort of cross-stitch item for their birthday, Christmas, or any holiday that involves gift giving. Partly because we all know how much people love to receive home-made gifts that take hours and hours and HOURS to create but look so very unsubstantial and moderately hokey. *ahem* But also because I can only put so many of my own ...

All my degrees are in chemistry, and contrary to popular opinion, there was a fair bit of wet lab work in all but the last 3 years of my formal education, so lab coats are part of my past. Of course, they never quite had any style. Are the days of the bland lab coat numbered?

She was 78.Said Bill McComb, CEO of Claiborne's company since November: "In losing Liz Claiborne, we have not only lost the founder of our company, but an inspirational woman who revolutionized the fashion industry 30 years ago.
Above: retro/vintage flight bags from KLM and Aeroflot, from inretro.net. Below: my bag..Today, I bought a bag, and I fell in love with my bag. My bag is a dorky bag. I wouldn't buy or wear it under other circumstances. It's like a wierd zipper-heavy backpack-influenced re-creation of airplane bags that the airlines used to give out in the 1960s, but without the cool retro airline logo design. REI calls it a "Boarding Bag"; like its predecessors, it's designed to be a small carry-on bag that holds the stuff you want on an airplane journey. Probably only someone who was a little worried about flying would buy such a thing. I didn't buy it for flying. I bought it for the hospital. But I did buy it because I was worried. To explain this dorky-bag purchase, I must first explain that among medic...

Today at our hospital's ACLS training for incoming interns, the Harvard boys were clustering together a little more than we should have been. (Knowing myself and the others, the clustering was more social anxiety than it was snobbery, but of course that's a fine line.) More remarkably, of seven Harvard Medical chaps who were there, all seven were in some variation of khakis and a button-down, no tie. I think five had blue shirts on, and two had white shirts. (Or was it four and three?) One of our group of Harvard boys was dressed slightly more casually yesterday, but he fell into line today. No one else among the incoming interns from other schools was dressed exactly this way. Most were a bit more casual. It was a training, and therefore there was no clear dress code. A few were as formal ...

UV Sol Beads, made with UV-detective pony beads and a removable fashion bead, feature off-white beads that remain off-white whenever there is an absence of UV light. When exposed to UV light, the intensity of the beads' color increases as the amount of exposure increases.Created by a science teacher who used the beads as a teaching tool for her students and then found herself wanting to reach out to others after a friend's battle with skin cancer, UV Sol Beads -- they cost $4.95 -- can cycle back and forth more than 5...

I believe that:* Scrubs is the most realistic medical television show of our era, and an informal but long-lasting and multi-city poll I've been taking of other medical students and residents suggests that many agree.* Scrubs are the clothing of the hospital as factory floor--the hospital as a production process with teams of workers working together--and their persistence and popularity suggest that more and more healthcare workers see their work in roughly those terms.* Ties should be eliminated from the work clothing of male doctors, and I used to think they would disappear because we would follow the "creative" sides of the business, research and technology worlds. But I have come to think that I will wear a tie for a long time to come, and so will most of my colleagues. But perhaps no...

Staying at a friend's house; in the morning, D, a 3 and a half year old person who addressed me while wearing her princess dress, noted that I was wearing my jammies. "Yes," I said, "They're my jammies, and I also go to work in them." Pause. Look of trying to figure out whether I am scamming her, followed by optimism that in fact I am being serious and that there are people who go to work in their jammies. I call Ms Hemodynamics who is with R and G, all of whom also go to work in their jammies. It's pretty amazing, when you think about it, that we all go to work in our jammies. This is an important medicine for people with AIDS, and Thailand wants to produce generic versions of it for impoverished people living with HIV and AIDS, who could not otherwise afford it. The Bangkok Post has an editorial which lays out the legal issue from a Thai point of view. I'm not sure exactly how it happened. But I'm pretty sure it started happening about two years ago: every health-related group started getting fleece jackets and vests with their logos and team names embroidered on the left chest. This is not unique to healthcare. In fact, I think the first local fleece explosion came from the Harvard Business School students. They've been walking around town for the last several years with HBS fleeces, each with their section name on them, full of mysterious significance. The HBS logo, initials and class year are ac...
