“When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That is my religion.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
Who doesn’t want to feel good about themselves? We all do. Though, in our own good, unique ways. I have jotted down my feel good factors and I would be happy to know if you could add your take to the list.
Receiving Compliments: ‘I can live my entire life on a good compliment’.. someone must have said this keeping a person like me in mind. I love receiving compliments and that’s the reason I am quite generous in paying compliments. I remember a few things that people told me about myself, that manage to bring smile to my face even in the darkest hours. When the middle aged Air India Flight attendant complimented me on my smile it was unforgettable and when my...

Slipped into the doldrums?
Feeling sad and low and lonely?
We all feel this way from time to time. Often, all we need is a good distraction to shake us out of the funk.
Here are 45 quick and easy mood lifters that you can use right now:
1.Tell a good joke – or ask people nearby to tell you their favorites. I just read this one, in the intro to Tina Fey’s book Bossypants. “Two peanuts walked down the road. One was a salted (peanut.)” And a personal favorite: “What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese.”
2. Follow funny people on twitter. I am partial to goofy humor and silly puns, so Ellen DeGeneres always gets a giggle from me @theellenshow. Conduct a search on twitter to see if any of your favorite comedians tweet.
3. Spend a few minutes watching babies giggle...

Are you looking to be reassured about something in your life just now?
Perhaps, a few words of support that would make you feel much better at this time.
Well-placed words of reassurance can have a massive impact. They encourage us to get through the tough days, and help to keep us motivated when things are going well.
When you stumbled and hurt yourself while playing as a kid, with the tears and blood streaming down, it felt good to be gently told: ‘There, there. Everything’s going to be fine’, given alongside the bandage.
It was a much needed reminder that you would, most probably, survive that painful event.
Being adults, though, we realize the grown-up reality that everything doesn’t always turn out to be fine.
That’s why it’s even more valuable for ...

Do you avoid the camera like some celebrities dodge the paparazzi?
Are you about as photogenic as a plate full of Brussels Sprouts? Is the thought of sending out a Holiday Greeting Photo Card about as appealing as burying yourself naked in a pile full of dirty snow?
If so, don’t despair. While this post might not turn you into the next super model, it will help you make the most of what you have and hopefully shift your focus to capturing as many magical moments as you can.
Remember – only wine and cheese get better with age, so what you hate in your 30’s, might actually look good to you when you are in your 80’s.

1. Avoid The Dreaded Double Chin

Did you know you can instantly feel a lot better about your body simply by choosing clothes that fit and flatter you now, rather than putting it off until you reach some ideal weight?
Or that the best way to exude sexuality and confidence is not by squeezing into skin tight clothes but finding outfits that work with your body?
Perhaps you feel like it would be shallow or frivolous to worry too much about the way clothes look on your body. There are no laws insisting you have to care much about clothing to be happy and confident.
However, most of us do feel better if we spend just a little time on our appearance.
Many people find themselves stuck in a perpetually low cycle of self esteem. When we don’t feel good about ourselves, we either:

This article will give many people in recovery food for thought.
What is a healthy relationship and how does sex fit in?
In the simplest terms, a healthy relationship is one that makes you feel good about yourself and your partner. Not only do you enjoy being together, but you can express your true self, and allow your partner to do the same. All relationships are different, of course, but healthy ones have at least five important qualities in common.
The acronym S.H.A.R.E. can help you remember these qualities.
Safety: In a healthy relationship you feel safe. You don’t worry that your partner will harm you physically or emotionally, and you don’t feel inclined to use physical or emotional violence against your partner. You can try new things (such as taking a night class) or c...

Romantic sex is the healthiest
Lose weight. Reduce stress. Lower your cholesterol level. Improve your circulation. Live longer. Stay younger. Sounds like an ad for a new wonder drug right? In fact it’s a partial list of the benefits of humanity’s oldest and most pleasurable pastime – sex.
Most of us are aware of the feel-good benefits of sex while we’re engaged in it, but do you also know that there are benefits which carry on after the sweaty bodies have dried and the sweet talk has reverted to sports? For instance:
Maintaining Ideal Body Weight
Sexual intercourse burns approximately 150 calories per half hour. Here’s how that stacks up against some other activities that may be part of your fitness regime: yoga 114 calories per half hour, dancing – 129,...

Feel Good Friday – Willie Nelson and Snoop

Something made me think of the time I went to FarmAid…which made me think of Willie…which led to this!

Bonus track: I don’t like to embed music videos captured off the television – but if YouTube hasn’t yanked it, I don’t feel bad about sharing the link. I haven’t heard this track in years, and I’m going to have to pick up a new (digital) copy of this album – it’s one I had on cassette tape and literally wore out.
No, not *that* one, but the Jill Sobule song, accompanied by Melissa Ferrick. Apparently there has been some attention to the matching song titles used by Sobule and, more recently, Katy Perry. Sobule made some tongue-in-cheek comments about it to The Rumpus, and folks like Rolling Stone took it seriously.
Through looking for a bit about this, I learned that Erin McKeown has a blog (where she weighed in on this in the context of the way the big, commercial music industry operates). I also stumbled across a piece on the two songs from Dec 2008 that includes this line as an argument that the Perry song is more subversive than the Sobule song, which I thought was completely clueless:
“Two women falling in love is considered much more acceptable than two women kissing for fun.”

*Which is awesome – I visited the main branch on Forbes while I was in Pittsburgh for my library science grad school. It seemed like a really pleasant place to spend time.

A little something for International Workers’ Day. I wanted a video of Utah & Ani Difranco doing “The Most Dangerous Woman,” but couldn’t find one, although you can listen to it a limited number of times from Rhapsody.
Relatedly, there’s a two-disc tribute to Utah out of Righteous Babe Records with Ani, Emmylou Harris, Pete Seeger and others, with proceeds benefiting the late Utah’s family.

Because I just got my once monthly paycheck, which is probably fine for highly paid late career folks with savings big enough not to be depleted by veterinary bills or spousal unemployment, but is not so great for folks just a couple of years out of grad school. I’m happy to be employed, but I’m happier at the beginning of the month when that check finally comes.

There is an interesting article on MSNBC.com about long time married couples dying within a few months of each other. It gives research evidence that the phenomena does exits and a mixture of medical and psychological factors that may explain the phenomena. If nothing else, reading it may just tug at your heart. As someone who has seen their share of hospice patients, I sure can't deny that it is possible that a spouses death "causes" the surviving spouses death. We have, no doubt, had instances where the second one was referred for our services shortly after the first one's death, but I always wrote that off to coincidence and a family's appreciation for how great hospice can be. More than anything, I know enough about death to know that I don't understand it. Do I believe spouses can "die...

I have no clue who first said, "The main thing is keeping the main thing the main thing", but I owe them a debt of gratitude. That odd little line has helped keep me focused through the years, and it is very timely advice for the hospice industry. My last couple of posts have dealt with the necessity of hospices moving from the relaxed business practices of the past to the world of having very serious best practices in place to ensure operational efficiency. I'm sure it isn't the most popular stuff I've ever written, but I am also sure that it is something hospices must face.Today I want to deal with what, exactly, the main thing is. Hospice, as defined by the Hospice Medicare Benefit, is the main thing.Hospices today often do so much more than what they did twenty five years ago. Just bec...

Here is a feel good story…
A young Michigan teen, 17 year old Danielle, was given the gift of life today. At a little past 2 AM, the young lady– who had been diagnosed with CHF earlier this Spring received her second heart transplant. Her first was when she was 5 weeks old.
Good luck to this Port Huron teen and her family! Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Luke 21In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at ...

I believe the Chaplain profiled is a good representative of most of the Chaplains that I have met along the way. They are just good, kind, non-judgemental people who understand what a blessing it is to spend sacred time with families. (Source: Hospice Blog)

After having some time to digest my own post on hospice chaplains, I have one thing I feel I need to add. There are some incredible people out there doing the job of the hospice chaplain. They work endless hours for less pay than they deserve and usually get little respect from the clinical staff that surrounds and outnumbers them when they gather around the table for team/staff meetings. If you have ever met one of these amazing people, you will know it. They spend their time saying prayers, holding hands, giving encouragement, and just sitting still with people who are overwhelmed or emotionally drained. And that is just what they do to support the staff of the hospice. They are the rock that a hospice leans on.There is no doubt that I am biased here, but let me ask a favor from those of ...

Thanks to a reader who pointed this story out to me over the weekend.Bob Lee, from Illinois, is going to ride 6,500 miles on his bicycle to celebrate his sixty-fifty birthday and raise money for the American Cancer Society, Les Turner ALS Foundation, and the National Hospice Foundation. The ride starts in Florida, takes him to Maine, and, after a quick airplane ride, from Washington State back to Maine. Here is his website, titled "A ride for three reasons".I've never really understood what motivates people to do these types of things, but God bless them for their efforts.
Hospice Care Increases Quality & Length of Life

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Association had a study published in the March edition of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management that further documents the fact that hospice patients live longer than those who do not elect hospice. The full article is available for free on the NHPCO website.I wrote this post in 2004 after a similar study came out with similar results, and still agree with my thoughts then.Electing hospice care is not the same as giving up. It is a decision to make the most out of the time you have left. Once that decision is made, hospice surrounds you and your family with the expertise and love necessary to LIVE life with your illness. Is there any doubt that most people actually thrive in that environment? (Source: Hospice Blog)

Hospice Workers Don't Get Enough Credit

I spend a lot of time on this blog talking about Medicare or the business aspects of hospice. Every once in a while, I get a chance to tell a feel good story about a patient or something above and beyond that a hospice has done for a patient. I don't spend enough time talking about the thing that makes hospice so special - The Workers. If you have been doing hospice for more than a year, you should be given a medal. Better yet, you should get to drive alone in the carpool lane, use the express lane when you have 12 items instead of the ten you are allowed, and have the cable guy show up on time to install your new channels. In all seriousness, if you are one of that crazy breed of people who were wired to provide hospice care for a career, then you are, in my book, nothing short of world ch...

Hospice Articles in the New Your Times

(Thanks to Pallimed for pointing these out to me. If you are not reading their site, then you are missing out on some great information!)The New York Times published a couple of articles about hospice this weekend. The first discusses open access which I have talked about some already. It is a good look at the movement although it focuses mainly on insurance companies who are actually paying for this service. My focus is much more on hospices who are eating the cost of expensive treatment, but if the Times can get more funding for this type of care, I'm all for it!The second is a short article about patients who thrive on hospice and end up being discharged because they are too healthy. My favorite type of patient! They are good reads and subjects that need some wider attention. (Source: Hos...

Is hospice losing its heart?

I was reading a book recently that recounted the history of the hospice movement in America. Part of that retelling was a discussion of the worries that the movement's pioneers had at the initiation of the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Among their concerns was the thought that being tied to the proposed Medicare payment system would limit the creativity of hospices or their willingness to do what was needed to help the individual patient. Basically, they were worried that the minimum required by Medicare would become the normal amount of help offered to patients. It seems that this fear was well founded. Before you think I've jumped off the deep end, I'm not saying that hospice was better back then. A solid payment source has helped hospice thrive and much time and money has been put into estab...

This article examines a little talked about phenomenon in hospice; the person who thrives on hospice care.Given the focused attention of hospice doctors, nurses, social workers and spiritual counselors, the patients get their minimum meds adjusted and take them regularly. They get painkillers adequate to assure a night's sleep. They eat regularly, and their loved ones get some help and relief."Often, just taking away the pain and enabling them to sleep through the night gives people a second wind," said Fillebrown, clinical director of the Lehigh Valley Hospice in Allentown, Pa.There is little more rewarding for hospice workers than to see their patients rally and thrive on nothing more than good care and a smile. It happens more often than most outside the hospice community think. My grand...
