We know women get paid less than men in the workplace, and, yes — that totally sucks. But is it a reason to waste $13,000 that could have been donated to a worthwhile charitable nonprofit?
Sweden’s feminist party burned $13,000 (donated by an advertising agency) to protest the amount of money women aren’t getting every minute compared to men. A powerful metaphor, to be sure, but there are plenty of women (and children) starving and struggling in the world. Why couldn’t that money have been donated to an organization that helps women in developing countries get an education or start a local business? While it’s less of a shock tactic, that would actually be helping the women’s equality movement, rather than just being an empty, wasteful gest...

December 6, 1989, is a date that many Montrealers, many Canadians, and others across the world, may never forget. While here at Healthbolt, we like to have fun at the expense of some news, some news is just too serious, to painful, to be made light of. But it also needs to be shared if anything is going to be successful with stopping it from ever happening again.
Twenty years ago, a man who hated feminists, entered a male-dominated educational institution and began a massacre. At the end of it all, 14 young women were dead and 10 were physically injured, as were four young men. And countless lives were altered forever.
It’s hard to give a monster more publicity, but his name must be spoken out loud, because he is a representative of what is wrong with our society – what is wron...

The scenarioAnne is in the process of giving birth, with assistance, to her second child. She has been in the second stage of labour for nearly an hour. She declined an epidural and has had a lot of pain. She is very tired, and becoming emotional. The baby's head is not coming down. She is being managed by John, an experienced consultant obstetrician, who she knows well. John thinks he has a good relationship with Anne. He delivered her first baby. He advises Anne that he needs to assist the delivery by using forceps. With her consent, he gives her a pudendal block and puts the forceps on the baby's head. He starts to pull gently and steadily and thankfully the baby's head comes down relatively easily. He reaches the stage where he knows that one more contraction, one more pull and the bab...

It is deeply depressing that the militant independent madwives continue to ply their trade whilst the Royal College of Midwives stands with its disciplinary telescope resolutely clamped to its blind eye. Regular readers may recall the Kent Independent Midwives, led by Virginia Howes:Virginia Howes : Independent MidwifeI printed, verbatim, the Kent Independent Midwives account of the management of a multiparous woman with a large baby and polyhydramnios. It was a catalogue of ignorance, arrogance, incompetence and negligence. It can still be read here. I sent a copy of it to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Shortly after I printed the story thus giving it wider publicity, the story mysteriously disappeared from the website. No comment was made. No explanation was offered. Now, only the he...

The latest Britblog Roundup was hosted by Redemption Blues, a site headed by a picture to die for. (Which mountain is it?) I was gratified that Dr Crippen’s recent post on Rowan Pelling and the White Witch was featured but then concerned to read the following:For those with the means to foot the bill, an independent midwife can indeed offer something your average, overworked NHS doctor cannot: she has time to build up a rapport with the expectant mother, displays empathy and actually listens rather than bossing around. Without such qualities the lobbying would hardly make an impact. Callousness and overweening arrogance are – alas – not in short supply amongst medical professionals, many of whom have a less considerate bedside manner than Gregory House. Nor would I dismiss the testim...
