By Jason KuznickiNPR’s Morning Edition today ran a surprisingly sympathetic report on “libertarian summer camp“ — the Porcupine Freedom Festival, held every year in New Hampshire.
How did it go? There was a lot of bacon, apparently. And a good time was had by all — many of whom, I gather, are a shade or two more radical than I am. It sounded like a fun, slightly zany, and not completely unworkable experiment in living, right down to the alternative currencies in gold and silver. Correspondent Robert Smith seems to have set out looking for “nasty, brutish, and short,” and what he found was just… different.
The main complaints?

Seven neuroscientists will discuss film imagery and its effect on conscious and subconscious processes in the viewer’s brain.
This past winter, Peter got to fulfill his movie-lover’s dream of going to the Sundance Film Festival. Of course, picture opportunities abounded for any young man with an iPhone. However, this is the only one I got sent.
(On left, Peter’s soon-to-be brother-in-law Dan, on the right is Peter. In between is Tobey Maguire.)

Blogger Concetta Tomaino who participated in the December 1st Event is truly a disruptive woman as described in the post below.
By Hope Ditto. We’re used to our Disruptive Women bloggers being on the cutting edge in their fields and doing amazing things every day. We’re used to them saving lives, fighting for those without a voice and revolutionizing the world around us. Still, it’s not every day that a major motion picture being featured at the world-famous Sundance Film Festival is directly connected to their work.
Not that we’re bragging, but we feel pretty fortunate to call Dr. Concetta Tomaino, D.A., MT-BC, LCAT, one of our own these days. Besides having her work featured in The Music Never Stopped (and having Julia Ormond, the actress playing the music therapist in the m...

Tomorrow is set-up for festival of trees. We will have some helpful info from Local Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, thanks to Esther over at the Duluth office. We will also have Help info from the National Family Caregivers Association (0NFCA) thanks to Suzanne over there in the great state of Maryland. Yes I love the Crab Cakes over at Obrycki's. and the old water taxis to Fell's Point. Of course the state is not just a suburb of DC and the inner harbor, in fact the whole state is beautiful. I sure miss the crab especially since Brian Williams told us on the NBC news last night how filthy and carcinogenic the crab and all seafood is from Thailand and Viet Nam is, it makes me realize I could eat a lot more healthy in Baltimore than I could in Duluth. - probably more...

Today would have been my mother’s 76th birthday, so it seems appropriate to share a quilt made for my sister of old scarves embroidered both by our mother and us girls. Back in June I shared the quilt I made for my sister Susan from some of the old scarves. I machine pieced this small wall hanging, 34 in X 34 in, somewhere around 2000. Cathy hand quilted. Here you can see some of the embroidered areas better. ……………………….. This post has been added to the Blogger’s Quilt Festival Fall 2010. There are many lovely quilts. Go check them out. (Source: Suture for a Living)

Why working memory matters in the knowledge age: study

Do you ever have days when you wake up and everything seems wrong with the world? Hopefully for most of these types of days are not the norm but the exception. However, there are some people who see everything as ‘half-empty’ instead of ‘half-full. Using cutting-edge psychological research, I am interested in finding out if it really matters–Does it matter if we see the glass as half-empty?
We are on the cusp of a new revolution in intelligence that affects every aspect of our lives from work and relationships, to our childhood, education, and old age. Working Memory, the ability to remember and mentally process information, is so important that without it we could not function as a society or as individuals. One way to visualise working memory is as the brain’s “Post-it Note...

I've had a rather interesting time compiling this post for this edition of Grand Rounds. I must say the motive for the theme being humour and laughter was purely selfish. This is the first time I am hosting here and I knew that if I had to keep up the good work of the previous hosts I would have to be totally involved with the selection process of so many many fantastic entries that this event brings on! The only way to screen them would be to enjoy reading every bit and what better way to do that than over a laugh.
New research finds children with autism have mercury levels similar to those of other children. University of California, Davis scientists said that the study was the “most rigorous examination to date of blood-mercury levels in children with autism,” and cautioned that the study did not disprove or prove whether mercury plays a role in causing the disorder. The study looked at the mercury levels in 452 participants – 249 with autism, 143 without it and 60 who had other developmental delays – and found levels “essentially the same” in all the children. More is here.

It’s that time of the year again for us horror movie fans to indulge in some great and not so great films with the Toronto Afterdark Film Festival. A friend of mine wanted to see the movie, The Children, so much he ordered if off of the Amazon UK site. I fought temptation to ask him if I could borrow it. What stopped me was the sudden memory was of the last time years ago of borrowing Man Bites Dog – the uncensored version on VHS, and never getting back to him.
Given that not so great precedent, I decided to keep my mouth shut. When the line up for the festival came out, I was delighted to see that they had brought in The Children for a screening.
The director was not able to be there, however, he did send a message to be read via email.

There was much to enjoy at the Street Theatre Festival in the Frisian Capital Leeuwarden today. One of the acts was Les Goulus (The Horsemen) We saw the same act as on the video. I had a great day out with a good friend of mine. My street phobia has become less, or life was just better today. Even life with autism can be good.Just watch this video, it's so funny hahahahaHave fun! (Source: The Art of Being Asperger Woman)

This evening, I've been invited (along with Allison and Kerri, although I believe some others were invited but were unable to attend) to attend the "Life for a Child" documentary film being screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film will later be available online at the Life for a Child website (see the bottom of the page for details on where). The documentary film, produced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company to raise awareness of the devastating impact of diabetes in the developing world, is being screened at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in New York from April 23 - May 4.
So the schoolbus came for the first time for Charlie this morning. I had already left to teach an early class and Jim gave me the report: It had been confusing. Charlie has grown accustomed to standing in the long driveway in front of my in-laws’ house and running back and forth on the lawn while waiting for the bus; today, Jim tried to determine if they should wait in the tidy parking lot or on the main street (the former, the bus driver assured him). Thursday had had a larger than usual share of anxious moments: Charlie had the day off for school for Rosh Hashanah and my parents left today for California and Charlie was keenly aware of this. I wrote up everything that happened for Charlie’s teacher soon as he went to sleep on Thursday.
As I stood waiting for the bus at 3pm, C...

And his mouth will be seen to droop, he says. This is all because of Ebert's tracheostomy -- it opens an airway through an incision in his windpipe, rendering him speechless -- that resulted from his June 16 surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland and a subsequent...
