I just finished a 40-day winter break from graduate school. After a quick but intense first semester, I was a bit crispy around the edges and welcomed the vacation. But now it is back to school and the next chapter in my journey towards becoming a clinical therapist.
In less than two weeks, I will be contacting my very first clients to set up appointments. Bless these people for actually volunteering to share their stories with me, someone who has been told she is a “good listener,” but isn’t really sure at this point what else she can offer another person therapeutically. We’ve been told silence is golden. I’m hoping it isn’t also awkward.
Yes, I did read my theory textbook last semester, and have my “favorite,” although by no means am I an expert in any of them! I was in...

The Noguchi Filing System

Link: The Noguchi Filing System is a way to organize the paper in your life without requiring that you categorize it. Basically, you use “pockets” to hold everything and place them vertically on a shelf. Whenever you need something from a pocket, you remove it from it’s place and place it back on the shelf as the leftmost pocket. This means that, over time, all of your frequently used pockets will be on the left and the least used pockets will be on the right.

Rating Doctors on the Internet

If you’re looking for a doctor, where do you go? Many people today are finding information on the Internet. “More than 40 Internet sites allow patients to rate their doctors based on their personal experiences, both good and bad, including RateMDs.com, DrScore.com and now, Angie’s List, at www.angieslist.com.”

I was able to find out about a doctor that I felt was treating me rather poorly. She ignored the symptoms I had after switching medications, she was short with me, and she refused to get back to me in a timely manner. It turned out my instincts were not wrong. When I looked her up on the Internet, I’d found that she had a history of poor behavior with patients, and had even been sued several times. Oh, if I’d only looked her up before I went to he...

DB Column: Dentistry & Finances by Keith Drayer

Our DentalBlogs financial wiz and guru, Keith Drayer, Vice President of Henry Schein Financial Services, gives us four reasons dentists should be happy about tax season in 2009.
1. Interest Rates are low. We are still 2% lower interest rates then a year ago. The savings over a 5 or 7 year financed project are substantial.
2. Section 179 $250,000 limit. This is a “use it or lose it” benefit to lower taxable income. 2010 it is scheduled to go down to $125,000 + an amount indexed for inflation.
3. Fifty-percent Bonus Depreciation in 2009 (phase out at $800,000). Section 179, 50% Bonus Depreciation & first year expense write off should cover approximately 70% - 100% of the projects the majority of our customers undertake.
4. “Qualified leasehold improvement property placed in...
