Why is Howard's Hilly so mean?

Is it because she gets cold sores?

										Otherwise knows as herpes?

In "The Help," Bryce Dallas Howard plays Hilly Holbrook, this summer's most vindictive villain since Lord Voldemort. As a young socialite in 1960's Jackson Mississippi threatened by the changes coming with the African American civil rights movement, Hilly is not above capriciously firing, slandering and falsely accusing maids that get in her way. She is punished, not just in the form of a culinary surprise, but also skinematically: she has herpes.

Wow! It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed any movies. It’s been my goal to review all the movies I watch for the 101 Things in 1,001 Days Challenge, but I haven’t actually watched that many movies. I guess I got burned out with my last round of 101 movies! Plus, February / March is usually a slow season in movies anyway. So far this year, I have reviewed 9 movies. Here are the next three!
Just as a reminder, this is how my grading breaks down:
{A} must-sees
{B} nice to watch
{C} watch if you have nothing else to watch or they just weren’t my cup of tea
{F} please don’t waste your time
{Creation}: C
This movie had such promise for me, because I love Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolly. They play Charles Darwin and his wife, respectively, and it’s even cuter ...

Public speaking is the king of phobias. That’s according to Taylor Clark, author of the insightful book, Nerve. He writes:
According to a 2001 poll, more than 40 percent of Americans confess to a dread of appearing before spectators. (In some surveys, fear of public speaking even outranks fear of death, a fact that inspired Jerry Seinfeld’s famous observation that at a funeral, this means the average person would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy.)
To get to the solution of this phobia — which can help us with all our other phobias — Clark tells the story of cellist Zoe Keating. Today her music is featured everywhere from National Public Radio to film scores to European ballets.
I pass this news release along, in case anyone knows of someone (or themselves!) who might be a good candidate for nomination for this year’s SAMHSA Voice Awards.
Join the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in recognizing consumer/peer leaders and TV and film professionals who have given a voice to individuals with behavioral health problems (mental health and/or addiction issues).
This year, SAMHSA is putting special emphasis on the impact of trauma and the significant effects it can have on individuals, families and friends, communities, and our Nation. Consideration is being given to consumer/peer leaders who have successfully advocated for the rights of trauma survivors and promoted the importance of trauma-informed care.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, whose previous documentaries include a McDonald’s smack down and Osama Bin Laden bounty hunt, now explores the world of product placement, marketing, and advertising in POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, a film that was fully financed through product placement by various brands, all of which are integrated transparently into the film. The documentary seeks to unmask the marketing process which ultimately informs our everyday entertainment decisions. Humorously told with tongue firmly in cheek, Spurlock uncovers closely-guarded secrets in the movie advertising industry that are not only shocking, but scary.

Perhaps the greatest documentary ever made is 'King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters'. It tells the incredible story of video game newbie Steve Wiebe's quixotic quest to break the 25 year-old Donkey Kong world record score held by the greatest gamer of all time, Billy Mitchell. It is also a brilliant depiction of psychopathology. (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

Had John Lennon not died in 1980, this year he would have celebrated his 70th birthday on Oct. 9. And a month later, he would have seen the Beatles catalog appear on iTunes for the first time. In one week, Apple sold 1.4 million Beatles songs.
“Just imagine that we could live our favorite melodies,” Carly Paige of Phoenix sings on “Just Imagine,” which she composed out of Beatles song titles. She uploaded the video to YouTube on Jan. 14, 2010. She was 12 years old at the time. Now she’s 13…

My mother once complained about a TV show that featured too much “full frontal crying.”
James Stewart
Crying is not pretty. Even the most attractive folks don’t look good with their faces scrunched up, and a swollen red nose, and tiny slits where eyes used to be. Ugh.
I’ve watched the footage: John Boehner Gets Weepy, Frequently. What’s the big deal? I don’t care a thing for the Iron John defense of male crying. I just think some people live in a cornball universe.
Take James Stewart. Politically he was so conservative that he and his former roommate Henry Fonda had to stop talking politics in order to continue their long friendship.

I’m Bambi. I’d like to be, anyway. But it doesn’t take much to bring out the Tasmanian Devil in me.
Yesterday ABC News reported on the new meme sweeping Facebook. People are replacing their profile pictures with a childhood favorite cartoon character.
According to knowyourmeme.com, the cartoon character game started three weeks ago in Greece and Cyprus. The original plan was to remove all pictures of humans from Facebook, but that meme morphed into yet another “awareness” game, similar to the bra color (breast cancer) and purse (female empowerment) games months ago. This time the good cause was a “campaign against violence on children.”…

Wisconsin State Medicaid has as of December 1st today added Suboxone Sublingual Film as the preferred delivery system. I have attached a file description. Because of some of you large geography and some limited stocking in certain areas. I would suggest you begin prescribing the Film to all your Medicaid patients as soon as possible to insure pharmacy coverage moving forward. All pharmacies can receive for stocking and distribution to your patients with 24 hour notice.

A former Playboy bunny and a Milwaukee police officer, Bembenek was convicted of the 1981 murder of her husband’s ex-wife. She escaped from prison in 1990 and fled to Canada. She was recaptured and, after a new trial, was sentenced to time served and set free. To the end, she proclaimed her innocence.

By David BoazThe movie “Mao’s Last Dancer” is a sleeper hit, says the Los Angeles Times:
It features no big-name stars, drew mediocre reviews and traffics in the esoterica of Chinese ballet.
And yet “Mao’s Last Dancer,” the true story of a ballet performer who defected to the United States in 1981, has become one of the season’s biggest art-house hits.
Bruce Beresford’s Australian-produced film tells of Li Cunxin, an 11-year-old Chinese boy plucked from his rural village in 1972 under the reign of Mao Zedong to dance for the Beijing Ballet. While in residence at the Houston Ballet a decade later, he defected to the United States after a politically charged standoff that involved the FBI and diplomats from China and the U.S.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Jill Clayburgh Is Dead. Long Live the Unmarried Woman!
Actress Jill Clayburgh died of complications from chronic leukemia on November 5, 2010. She was 66 years old. She had battled the disease for 21 years. Most people remember Clayburgh for her 1978 breakout film “An Unmarried Woman,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
In the 1970s, women didn’t know quite where they stood. Go back just a few years, and Marilyn Monroe was alive and making movies. But it was still a dozen years before “Thelma & Louise” would rebel and roar off into the sunset. Even further into the future were Angelina Jolie and Uma Thurman shooting, kicking, slicing and punching their way through movies. In the 1970...

Buprenorphine Film: Step Forward or Marketing Gimmick?

It i salways humorous when companies do what Reckitt-Benckiser recently did– make a small change in their product, then trash the old product in favor of the new, more expensive product. “The OLD formulation is GARBAGE! It poses huge risks! It is reckless and irresponsible to prescribe that tablet (the one that we’ve been marketing for years, that is…)”
The orange rectangle is buprenorphine film
For people who are confused, here is what happened…. Reckitt-Benckiser, the makers of Suboxone and Subutex, used to have a stranglehold on the market for buprenorphine. Profits poured in from selling buprenorphine at ridiculous prices; $6 per tablet in the Midwest for Suboxone, and over $11 per tablet for Subutex. The prices were particularly obnoxiou...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. The New Stepford Wives Party, Starring Sarah Palin (Also Gidget).
I loves me some mama grizzly Sarah Palin and her adorable Republican bear cubs running for national office — Delaware’s Christine “Never Mind What I Said Back Then” O’Donnell, South Dakota’s Kristi “I Forgot My Court Date” Noem and Nevada’s Sharron “Unemployed People Are Spoiled” Angle.
And no, I don’t love them because they’re “unelectable.” If you said that, bite your tongue. MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews bet Politics Daily’s own David Corn that O’Donnell will win in November.
I love films. Give me some sepia tinted, noirish thriller, done in mime, with French subtitles and I am a happy Mental Nurse. Sometimes I drop my standards and watch things that are actually fun. Sometimes I watch things because I can not heave my carcass off the sofa to reach the remote control and change the channel.
It is a hard life.
Sometimes I even watch something that either has mental health or nursing as a subject. I could do a post on that how original.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. She Had a Job, a Boyfriend and a Brain Tumor, Back When Reality TV Was Real.
For a moment in time, she was pediatric resident Dr. Marnie Rose at Memorial Hermann in Houston. I got to know her a little during my first, tumultuous year of recovery from ovarian cancer. Dr. Rose was on TV.
Back in those days I was combing the schedule for any reality show that slithered its way to the tube. There among the dreck of the early 2000s (guilty pleasures “Mr. Personality,” et al I’m looking at you) was the lovely Ms. Rose in “Houston Medical,” an ABC show that featured doctors, patients and their families. My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Choosing Children: A Huge Investment in a Perilous World.
Kids. Are they bundles of joy? Or crippling burdens? A trip to the mall will remind anyone that it depends on the parent and depends on the kid. However, a headline like that is not going sell papers.
Despite the title of New York Magazine cover story “I Love My Children. I Hate My Life,” readers learn on page six of the six-page article that research reveals that in the long run parents do not regret having kids. It’s the childless who have regrets.
Sure, kids will ruin your life. But so does everything, if you live long enough.
My colleague Sarah Wildman acknowledges the frustrations of raising a child in a country that...

On January 2nd, 2007, 50-year-old construction worker Wesley Autrey was waiting with his two young daughters for the train at the 137th Street and Broadway station in the Harlem section of Manhattan. Also waiting was 19-year-old film student Cameron Hollopeter, who began having a seizure.
Autrey borrowed a pen and used it to keep Hollopeter’s jaw open. Understandably wobbly post-seizure, Hollopeter fell onto the tracks. Autrey saw the lights of the oncoming train, gave a stranger his daughters to hold, and jumped down. He protected Hollopeter by lying on top of him. The Devil’s Pocket
by The Low Road
Took a walk through the Devil’s Pocket
Passed a bar with an Irish name
Round the back there was a ladies entrance
And through her door I heard a woman say
I’ll take you in this Devil’s Pocket
I won’t go nowhere else
I’ll love you in this Devil’s Pocket
It’ll be our private little corner in hell
The bartender wants a glass of whiskey
Dropped his ring down the kitchen sink
Little girl looking at him mighty strangely
Who’s to say what his late wife would think
She’d say I’ll take you in this Devil&#8...

By Adam SchaefferGov. McDonnell just signed a bill that will give a tax credit to the film industry. They will shell out up to $2.5 million to movie-makers in the first year and up to $5 million thereafter. Proponents say it might save money. Unfortunately, the evidence from other states suggests it will lose money.
At a time of economic turmoil and budget problems, the Governor wants to lose money by giving a tax credit to the film industry. It’s even refundable, which in normal-talk means the state will send a check to a film executive even if he doesn’t owe any taxes; that’s a straight BAILOUT, not a tax credit. The last thing Virginia needs is another corporate bailout.
What is wrong with our Commonwealth? And what in the world is Governor McDonnell thinking?
There is one tax cre...

I would like to take a moment to thank the over 120 people who took time out from their busy schedules to attend the Chicago premiere of The Vanishing Oath at the Wilmette Theatre last evening. For many, it was the first time people they were exposed to the challenges that confront physicians daily in our current health care system.Following the film, the audience (comprised of approximately 65% non-physicians) participated in a question and answer session with film's producer, Ms. Nancy Pando (pictured here with me following the show). The critiques and comments were invaluable to the film team as they work to engage more people in the efforts underway to protect the doctor-patient relationship. Working with Ms. Pando, I hope to assemble a short video clip of a few of people's impressions...

Due to the overwhelming response to my review on the new physician-directed documentary, The Vanishing Oath, I have arranged for another public viewing in the Chicago metropolitan area on Monday, 24 May 2010 at 7pm at the intimate confines of the Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette, IL. Ms. Nancy Pando, producer of the film and resident of Boston, has graciously agreed to participate in a question/answer session immediately following the viewing. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the film's team and their fledgling production company, Crash Cart Productions, LLC. Tickets will be $10 each. Seating is limited to 182 seats. Let's make it a full house. For the first fifty seats, anyone interested in pre-purchasing tickets can send me an e-mail at wes - at - medtees dot com with your name and ...

Yesterday a much-anticipated package arrived in the mail containing a documentary film directed (and acted) by a young emergency room physician, Ryan Flesher, M.D., and produced by a former clinical social worker, Nancy Pando, L.I.C.S.W. The film is called “The Vanishing Oath.”
As background, the film is a 3-year project born in 2007 just before the great U.S. healthcare reform debate began. Over 200 hours of interviews were conducted to explore a simple question:
Why Dr. Flesher had grown to hate medicine. (more…)

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Elizabeth Warren: Bank Watchdog Who Belongs on Supreme Court.
Elizabeth Warren

On Monday CNN reported that Elizabeth Warren, Harvard law professor and chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), made the short list of nominees to replace Justice John Paul Stevens.
What a difference a year makes. I called it here on Politics Daily last May, but back then I was dreaming more than predicting.
On Tuesday night Warren appeared on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” to address runaway foreclosures and the indifferent response of the very banks that taxpayers just bailed out to the tune of $700 billion.
Warren pointed out that TARP was supposed to repair the economy at large, not just banks. It...

Surrealism started in the early 1920s. Surrealism was expressed in pictures, music, writings and later also in films.
surrealist film in particular is characterised by the use of incongruous and ambiguous imagery and situations, and could be considered a par excellence example of non-conventional art.
A total of 240 participants from Vienna, Austria were included in this study. They looked and rated ten film clips. They also completed the Big Five personality questionnaire, a scale for sensation seeking and ambiguity tolerance. [It] is an international film festival of (non-)actors with a mental or combined handicap organized by HENDAVER, o.s. The festival shows feature films in which exclusively people with a mental and combined handicap act.
The main idea of the festival is to create the conditions for artistic self-fulfillment of handicapped people and thus to take part in their mental development. In addition to that, this activit...

The outspoken director, actor and political activist Sean Penn is no stranger to controversy. Now, however, he’s insulted the rectal cancer folks. At least, that’s the conventional wisdom. But what did Penn actually say?
Sean Penn
In response to CBS reporter Lara Logan’s question on how Penn felt about criticism of celebrities in Haiti, Penn replied, “Do I hope that those people die screaming of rectal cancer, yeah… But I’m not going to spend a lot of energy on it.”
Sean Penn is not one for moderation. Just a week ago on comedian Bill Maher’s HBO show “Real Time,” Penn said that reporters and pundits who refer to Hugo Chavez as a dictator should go to jail. (Like Christopher McCandless, th...

Clothes look good on thin bodies. But thin bodies naked? Not so much. Naked full bodies is another matter. Or near-naked, a la actress Christina Hendricks in a corset on the cover of New York Magazine.
Hendricks, a breakout star of AMC’s hit show “Mad Men,” is undeniably beautiful. She’s also a different body type than we’re used to seeing in the glamor factories of Los Angeles and New York. But then “Mad Men” is a period drama, set half a century ago.
It may be relevant that most fashion designers are gay men. Thin women look more male than their voluptuous counterparts in the general population. My recollection was that the ultra-thin trend began in the late 1960s with the iconic model known as Twiggy, an...

This could be the one. There's been lots of films in the last few years trying to tackle the issues surrounding the epidemic of Chronic Disease in the West that is now starting to take hold in the far East. Most of them have been a little too earnest for general consumption, too many excuses for Doctors to be dismissive. This film could be different. Here we have a clinician and a scientist jointly presenting their evidence to argue that heart disease, cancer and diabetes is more a choice than an inheritance. The problem is how to get those most in need to realise they have a choice for optimum health.Better diet and health is not profitable enough for global corporations - there will be no Pharmaceutical company investing millions of Dollars of PR, advertising and Lobbyists' time on this Nat...

You’ve got a face with a view. And David Byrne dances with a lamp to one of the greatest love songs of all time. From the film Stop Making Sense, here’s Talking Heads performing “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).”

Tomorrow night HBO will premier the film Temple Grandin:
Starring Claire Danes, Julia Ormond, Catherine O’Hara, and David Strathairn Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman’s perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism at a time when it was still quite unknown.
The film is based on two of Grandin’s books about autism, Emergence: Labeled Autistic (written with Margaret Scariano) and Thinking in Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life with Autism. Given the typical Hollywood treatment of autism (Rain Man, anyone), I had my doubts – fears, maybe – about how this story would be told. A review of the film in yesterday’s The Atlantic has helped to alleviate those concerns:

Bruce Springsteen in Spain, July 2009

Vanna White, the pleasant letter-turner on the game show Wheel of Fortune, was wildly popular in the mid-1980s.
Some surmised that Vanna’s appeal stemmed not from her blondness, but rather her blandness. Viewers saw either a girl next door or an irresistible, slightly dangerous hottie, depending on what they wanted to see.
So my suggestion for 2012 presidential candidate is: Bruuuuuuce!
Yes, Mr. Springsteen. The singer. Well, why not?
Since our elections are about symbolism, good looks, personality, body language and the voter’s ability to project on to a candidate the promise of their unspoken desires and redemption of their broken dreams, why not Bruce?
You know I’m right. Chris Matthews su...

According to a Yahoo.com story, American film-maker Dan Woolley, who was in Haiti to make a documentary on poverty in that country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, was trapped beneath rubble after the hotel he was staying in collapsed. Unable to get help, Woolley was trapped with a broken leg and a bleeding head wound.
Although a fractured leg is serious, a head wound can be much more so. Just remember actress Natasha Richardson’s death after she fell and struck her head while on a ski hill. The bleeding also needed to be stopped. So, what to do?

As the wife of a theater critic and as a former movie critic myself, I appreciate the fine art of underacting. Sadly, it’s more and more rare.
When thespians get Academy Awards for screaming and hurling themselves around a room (also known as chewing the scenery) or for putting on a fetching costume and taking on the dialect of a regional stereotype, it’s time to reboot.
“The tone of America’s discourse seems to have taken a wrong turn,” writes my colleague Joann M. Weiner about these hard and partisan times in which we live.
It might be a good idea to revisit some values from other parts of the globe.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
The Woman Up crew has been discussing Meryl Streep bravely flaunting her age in her new film “It’s Complicated.”
Prior to that, we took note of a more visceral kind of courage put forward in the film “Precious,” covered by my Woman Up colleagues Michelle, Mia and Mary.
As a diehard wait-till-HBO-or-Netflix type, I have seen neither “It’s Complicated” nor “Precious.” But all this talk got me thinking about women and heroism. I constructed my own list of profiles in feminine courage. In reverse order of the date in which they premiered:
Sophie Scholl
Julia Jentsch in “Sophie Scholl — The Final Days” (2005) gives a brilliant performance in a brilliant film.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
On Friday word came down that Irish folk singer Liam Clancy, 74 years old, had died. Within minutes Facebook was awash in the news. Radio DJs announced they were planning tributes. Others, including me, posted Clancy Brothers videos.
I found a clip of Liam Clancy singing “The Patriot Game,” the ballad written by Dominic Behan, brother of renowned Irish playwright Brendan Behan. I had not heard the song in years, but even so, I discovered I knew it by heart.
I am neither Catholic nor descended from Irish ancestors, but you could not have guessed that from my family’s record collection. While my parents also had bagpipe music and such evocative titles as “Folk Music from Many Lands,” we had every record ever released by ...

I’ve read how Mr. O’Neal was not upset that he was left out of Farrah’s will. Yeah, right, says your son Griffin.
At least Farrah managed to reinvent herself. I, for one, was put off by Farrah’s grimace-like smile in her famous poster, and her skill as an actress was far below par.
Her performances called to mind the words of critic John Simon regarding another blond beauty queen turned actress: “She came across like one of those inanimate objects, say, a cupboard or a grandfather clock, which is made in certain humorous short subjects to act, through trick photography.”

They say we know who we are by the myths we cherish.
I’d planned to weigh in on the third-season finale of “Mad Men,” a show that is both a valentine to and a critique of the 1960s. But I got sidetracked by another kind of myth – a tale of horror.
Last night I watched the 2008 film “Quarantine.” Whether filmmakers intend it or not, all horror movies tap into the anxieties of their times. With “Quarantine,” it’s the war we’re now fighting.

I just finished watching the final episode of The War, the 15-hour Ken Burns documentary on World War II that premiered almost a year ago.
Last night I watched episode five, FUBAR, which seemed long and padded. The show swung wildly from prosaic observations that did nothing to deepen my understanding of war to monologues that just about broke my heart. And then back to the kind of “meh” narration that gives documentaries a bad name.
Tonight I had the fast forward button at the ready. Didn’t use it.
The finale, A World Without War, was packed: The fall of Berlin, the Holocaust, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, Okinawa, the dropping of the atomic bomb, the liberation of prisoners of war in Jap...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
On Tuesday afternoon, a young Toronto singer-songwriter named Taylor Mitchell was walking the beautiful Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park when two coyotes attacked her.
A nearby hiker heard her cries and came to her aid. Mitchell was airlifted to a hospital, but she died the next morning, on October 28.
Had she lived, in three weeks Mitchell would have found out whether or not she won a Canadian Folk Music Award. She’d been nominated in the category of Young Performer of the Year. She was 19 years old.
Cape Breton officials insisted an attack by coyotes is highly irregular, since they usually shy away from humans….

To quote a movie I saw: How could something as important as life be so fragile?
But fragile it is.
Toronto singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell was only 19 years old, but even at that tender age, she had already put out an album. She was recently nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award. And she was on tour, performing for audiences in Nova Scotia.
On the afternoon of October 27, Taylor was hiking Cape Breton’s Skyline Trail when she was attacked by two coyotes. A nearby hiker heard her cries and summoned help. Taylor made it to a hospital, but she died the next morning, her mother by her side.
You can stream a few of Taylor’s songs on myspace and watch a video of her last performance on ustream. Come November 21st Taylor would have found out whether or...

Happiness for sale! And worth every penny because of the good health and prosperity that will surely come, especially when your happiness is achieved through positive thinking.
Ugh . . . no, says cancer survivor Barbara Ehrenreich, author of “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America,” and, more recently, “Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America.”
Last week Ehrenreich appeared on “The Daily Show,” where host Jon Stewart asked if positive thinking is all right as long as intentions are good and it works for some people.
“I never think delusion is OK,” Ehrenreich replied.

University of California, Davis scientists said that the study was the “most rigorous examination to date of blood-mercury levels in children with autism,” and cautioned that the study did not disprove or prove whether mercury plays a role in causing the disorder. The study looked at the mercury levels in 452 participants – 249 with autism, 143 without it and 60 who had other developmental delays – and found levels “essentially the same” in all the children. More is here.

It’s that time of the year again for us horror movie fans to indulge in some great and not so great films with the Toronto Afterdark Film Festival. A friend of mine wanted to see the movie, The Children, so much he ordered if off of the Amazon UK site. I fought temptation to ask him if I could borrow it. What stopped me was the sudden memory was of the last time years ago of borrowing Man Bites Dog – the uncensored version on VHS, and never getting back to him.
Given that not so great precedent, I decided to keep my mouth shut. When the line up for the festival came out, I was delighted to see that they had brought in The Children for a screening.
The director was not able to be there, however, he did send a message to be read via email.

I’m so excited about July’s episodes on NOVA ScienceNOW! The series has a great line-up of genetic and other science segments that can hold anyone’s interest. And it’s perfect if you want your kids to get some brain-juice flowing through the summer.
So beginning June 30 and every Tuesday night at 9pm ET/PT, NOVA at PBS will feature “Super-Science Tuesdays” with new stories from genetics (!!), technology, science and medicine. Check out a couple of these episodes -
June 30 (Tuesday) Episode 1.
Remember the anthrax scare after 9-11 that took months to solve? Well now scientists are using genetic “fingerprinting” to trace the source of the strain, and other microbes responsible for epidemics or poisonings.
And then, there’s a secret “diamond farm” that engineers arti...

And a personal blog where I write both movie reviews and occasionally items about animal rights. So this belongs there too.Might start to feel a little bit like cheating though! For ...

Famous last words from Clementine, aka the glorious Kate Winslet in the best love story you’ve never seen, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Like Clementine, I too am not a concept, but I am sometimes treated like one.
I am a cancer survivor, but I am not brave. I’m chicken. That can be a good thing, though. I can be a very squeaky wheel. When you have cancer, even the smallest advantage counts.
I am a cancer survivor, but I will not make a better friend to you than someone who is not. Most likely I’ll be worse. I have been traumatized. I can be mean. I can find fault with almost anything you say or do. And you can’t get me on it, because I’m al...

In the doc "Tyson," audiences spend 90 minutes hearing the inner-most thoughts of ex-boxer/convict Mike Tyson. Viewers have long had a chance to judge Tyson's exterior, especially since he got a Maori-style facial tattoo. Facial tattooing is rare outside of the culture of the indigenous people of New Zealand. Except in movies.

Audrey Hepburn
I have updated my January tribute to Audrey Hepburn with eight new versions of “Moon River” (and kept two of the old favorites). Like Blackbird, “Moon River” is covered so often on YouTube that one must check back now and then.
Among the new performers are a singer from Romania, a couple from Italy and the first little girl I’ve ever thought skilled enough to feature here.
Also a singer/guitarist who’s quite good, but he appears to be performing on a stage set for The Importance of Being Earnest or maybe Arsenic and Old Lace. Ah, the joys of being a folksinger on the college circuit! At least he was paid. Probably.

I must have been 12 years old when I first read A Night to Remember by Walter Lord.
It’s a slender volume, but Lord took years to research and write it. In the 1950s the Titanic was all but forgotten. Lord thought only nautical buffs and a few of his mother’s friends would buy his book.
Captain Smith and ship designer Andrews ponder their fate (1958 British film)

He thought wrong. When published in 1955, A Night to Remember shot up the bestseller list. Wrote The New York Times: “Stunning…one of the most exciting books of this or any year.” To this day A Night to Remember has never gone out of print.
Lord began his book with this foreward:
In 1898 a struggling author named Morgan Robertson concocted a novel about a fabulous Atlantic liner, far larger than ...

Neal McCluskey’s classic Cato Policy Analysis, “Why We Fight: How Public Schools Cause Social Conflict,” is vindicated once again by the tiff over whether a porn film will be screened on the University of Maryland campus.
At this writing, students intend to go ahead with a showing of “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge” despite threats from a state senator to withhold funding for the university if the film is screened.
Many people object to porn for legitimate reasons. The question is whether the state should weigh in on the subject, pitting the moral views of some against the speech rights of others.
Says McCluskey:
Throughout American history, public schooling has produced political disputes, animosity, and sometimes even bloodshed between diverse people. Suc...

Best joke I’ve seen today: Twitter Switch for Guardian, After 188 Years of Ink.

If you’re not familiar with The Chaser’s War on Everything, check it out. Sort of the Aussie version of The Daily Show.

Bedazzled, written by and starring Dudley Moore as a lovestruck short-order cook and Peter Cook as Satan, retells the legend of Faust. The film was released in 1967, but it still blows the remake away.

It's big enough that there is space enough for every niche interest imaginable. I also believe that besides connecting with other people, the internet can assist minority groups in advocating for themselves, as happened with protesting the Ransom Notes campaign. But I also think that the internet has its limitations in effecting change in socieatal attitudes and laws. My personal feeling is that the internet is one tool in a big handbag of ways that can be utilized to change opinions. Should we utilize the internet? You betcha.
Often caregivers feel isolated and think they’re alone in facing the challenges of caring for a family member, especially one with Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. Even if there is a caregivers’ support group in their community, it’s not always easy to get away to attend meetings.
Online communities have become a boon to caregivers, where they can meet with others online who are having similar challenges.

Covers of Moon River are ubiquitous. It seems the entire world loves this simple, beautiful song.
But try finding a cover that does justice to the original, which was written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer for Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
By her own admission, Hepburn could not carry a tune, so she performed “Moon River” in a breathy, conversational style. Even so, songwriter Mercer considered Hepburn’s version to be the definitive one amid dozens of hits by the biggest names in show business.
Many of the video tributes to Hepburn, who died of cancer on January 20, 1993, play “Moon River” over images from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But in her personal life the actress had little in common with the troubled call girl crea...

I get hate mail. My cancer-sucks message does not go over well with everyone.
Some people are offended by what they perceive as negativity. Perhaps they think I will “infect” them, and thereby seal their doom. Cancer survivors may dutifully trundle off to chemo and radiation appointments, but in their heart of hearts they count on positive thinking to save them.
I too might have cleaved to superstitions if I could have believed in them. But like many writers (and non-writers) I grew up in a home where dissembling was the glue that held the family together—just barely. In the long run, though, pretense caused more pain than comfort, and I took note of that. You could say I developed an allergy to misinformation.
Much of what I hear regarding illness or death strikes me as down...

I just watched a great documentary by the team of Emmy Award winner producer/director Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill called Baghdad ER. This HBO documentary brings a story of medical personnel of the 86th Combat Support Hospital, the US Army’s premier medical facility in Iraq.
It is quite shocking and a great reminder how pointless and stupid any war is. For now own, every time I catch myself thinking that I am having a rough night, I am going to thing of these brave people. You think your ER is hard, think again. I was left feeling kind of helpless at the end of the movie, because the number of killed and injured, for the most part young, people just keep increasing without any sign of stopping.
Dear colleagues in Iraq, or anywhere else in the world where there is a war, you...

Bob Barker is the devil.
You know it’s true. You’ve watched him on television your entire life. He never goes away. He’s always there, smiling, intoning, seducing, inviting us into a world of naked materialism.
Maybe this seems self-evident, but my conclusion was not reached lightly. It began when I drove my wife to the emergency room. There was no way we could know it at the time, but that was the prelude to our passage into cancer world.
Hospital waiting rooms and oncology clinics are never very happy places, of course. Patients and their loved ones gathered there devote their psychic energy to a set of basic goals: Don’t bolt from your chair ...

It’s not fun to be a contrarian. You get accused of things. You get blamed for things.
Last week on The Larry King Show, Bill Maher said that although he supports Obama, he has no problem with the “angry” McCain that others abhor.
I don’t mind an angry politician. I’ve often wondered why American people aren’t angrier. So I think we need a guy who’s angry in there. That doesn’t bother me at all. But it bothers Americans. I’ve never understood that, considering how much we’re poisoned, lied to and ripped off, especially with what’s going on now. I don’t understand why they’re not in the streets with pitch forks. I really don’t.
Now, here’s a guy who thinks anger can be an appropriate reaction. Who wil...

After a bit of an unordinary Saturday, we had a nothing-special Sunday. It’s a balance of new things and familiarity that we’ve found amenable for Charlie. While bike-riding and piano and cello playing were all nothing unusual for Charlie to do, doing these things for a camera and with a lot unfamiliar people around—-that calls for some unwinding.
Sunday Charlie woke up early and then went back to sleep (actually, we all slept in). He had breakfast and wanted to eat more and when I suggested he ride his bike to the bagel store with Jim, Charlie called for his helmet and put on his socks and shoes and sweatshirt. He looked in the usual place for the helmets and only found a very old one of Jim’s (that makes the wearer look like he has a turtle on his head). Charlie t...

Around 11.30 am on Saturday a black van pulled up in front of where we live. Charlie was sitting on the couch and looking out the window for Jim to return with breakfast and his eyes lit up at the sight of that van.
Back in June, Jim and I were interviewed by Todd Drezner, who’s making an autism documentary called Loving Lampposts. Yesterday Todd and his crew came to shoot some footage of Charlie and us. After a couple of really fast “no’s,” Charlie sat down at the piano and then strapped on his helmet to ride his bike.
Charlie made sure Jim had his and hopped on to follow Jim’s black bike. It took Charlie a moment to swing his right leg over his red bike and for a moment he balanced an almost-still bike before his left foot found the pedal, and then he was of...

For no particular reason, this morning I watched Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones in Portrait of Jennie. It was romantic in a way that few movies are any more. This is quite possibly because they leave sex out of it totally. You have a swirl of motion and emotion in the storm at the lighthouse, at the end of the movie.
I could wax moralistic, but I think I won’t. I don’t do it very well.
Meanwhile, I’m going to go through (time to work on my life list) the brand-new:

British Heart Foundation maintains a website to warn people about heart attack symptoms and the importance to promptly seek professional help if you start experiencing them. A two minute film which enables you to experience what it’s like to have a heart attack first hand plays a central role in their campaign to save lives.
Be sure to watch this incredible film and share it with others.

You might have recognized Stephen Berkoff, a famous English actor playing a lead role in this film. Isn’t he just brilliant? Like some old mobster. (Source: Ivor Kovic, M.D.)

Below is a synopsis of the film: Roger Weisberg's Critical Condition is a powerful, eye-opening look at the health care crisis in America. In an election season when health care reform has become one of the nation's most hotly debated issues, Critical Condition lays out the human consequences of an increasingly expensive and inaccessible system. Using the same cinema verite style he employed with Waging a Living (P.O.V., 2006), Weisberg allows ordinary hard-working Americans to tell their harrowing stories of b...

So we have just now come back from the Aventura Mall’s movie theaters, where we saw Burn After Reading. Buck and I are glad we saw the new Coen brothers movie before Peter had a chance to. Not sure that it’s one we want to see together with our son, but it was very funny.
The ending was a bit dirty and tangled, but we liked it. Want a spoiler? Wish I could give one. There are so many red herrings here, that the point of the movie seems actually to be the red herrings. And I mean that in a good way.
The plot is formed like this: one bad thing happens to one character (John Malkovitch’s character, Oswald Cox, gets fired from a mid-level job in the CIA), and a myriad of events, mostly comedically tragic, happen to a whole host of otherwise unrelated characters.
There is a bi...

Habit Patterns (1954) hails from the Psychology for Living film series by McGraw Hill Book, with an accompanying textbook by Sorenson and Malm. It was targeted at 1950s teens. I’d hate to see what questions they asked the class after showing this hilariously harrowing film.

God I miss this show.

Thinking back, one of my favorite lines was when Tony kinda turned into his mother and said to AJ, (when he was blaming his depression on ______ *fill in the blank*) “Poor you”
They didn’t have that scene, so I chose [...] (Source: bipolar chicks blogging)

(1964, remastered 2007)
I just watched the restored edition of the 1964 film I Am Cuba.
Sure, it’s propaganda, but a poet co-wrote the script, and the cinematography alone qualifies the film as a masterpiece.
One Amazon critic called the film ”a fever dream, a plunging rollercoaster ride, a cinematographer’s hallucination, a love song to the power of cinema.”
It’s all that and more.
A.V. Club site with May 1, 2008 review by Scott Tobias and clips from the film.
When Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba — a long-lost, phantasmagoric Cuban-Soviet propaganda film from 1964-was rediscovered and reissued in late 1995 by Milestone (with the prominent support of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola), critic Terrence Rafferty wrote the following in his New ...

Looking for Autistic (Child) Actors

Thomas Brown, a filmmaker in Ohio, is making two films, one called Ant Boy and the other Silent Hero, which both include autistic characters. Today’s Port Clinton News notes that both films are to be about autism, bullying and the emotional issues that children face. Brown (who can be contacted by email) is looking for an autistic child to play the autistic child, if he can. Would this be one of the few times or even the first to have someone autistic play…..someone autistic, in a film that’s not a documentary?

The best dance scene in the world

I told you all a while back that my son, Peter, got me to watch Jean-Luc Godard’s Band of Outsiders. In particular, he had me watch the famous-in-certain-circles dance scene. It’s now a favorite of both of us. It only just now occurred to me that YouTube might have it. Silly me.
It’s the opposite of all the dances in American in Paris, but in a very good way. Enjoy.

On Being Different or, Kung Fu Panda!

Being different; being disruptive; looking different; smelling funny (according to those who think they don’t); yowling………
What do these apply to?
Are these perhaps a few reasons why a 2 year old and his mother were kicked off an American Eagle plane, or a 13-year-old’s parents had a restraining order filed against them, or a 5 year old was voted out of his class?
Well yes, but actually, nope.
The different-looking-and-being, disruptive-behaving, smelling-funny, yowly individual I am referring to is……………..Po aka Kung Fu Panda.
Charlie and I saw the movie Kung Fu Panda Tuesday evening. We haven’t seen a movie in a while and we had some free time on Tuesday and Charlie said “yes, movie!” when I asked him. I knew th...
