Title: Healthy lives, healthy people: a tobacco control plan for England
The Skinny: Sets out how tobacco control will be delivered in the context of the new public health system, focusing in particular on the action that the Government will take nationally over the next five years to drive down the prevalence of smoking and to support comprehensive tobacco control in local areas.
It includes commitments to:

implement legislation to end tobacco displays in shops;
look at whether the plain packaging of tobacco products could be an effective way to reduce the number of young people who take up smoking and to support adult smokers who want to quit, and consult on options by the end of the ...

A few days ago I read that Dr. Lazar Greenfield, Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, resigned as the president-elect of the American College of Surgeons over flak for authoring a Valentine’s Day-pegged, tacky, tasteless and sexist piece in Surgery News. The February issue is mysteriously absent in the pdf-ied archives. According to the Times coverage: “The editorial cited research that found that female college students who had had unprotected sex were less depressed than those whose partners used condoms.
From Pauline Chen, also in the Times:
It begins with a reference to the mating behaviors of fruit flies, then goes on to discuss studies on the menstrual cycles of heterosexual and lesbian women who live together. Citing the research of evolutionary psychologists at the...

Airborne precautions are used in cases of confirmed or suspected Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) and measles (rubeola).
This requires a private room with negative pressure with the door kept continually closed. All personnel entering the room must wear a hepa-filter, N95 mask, or PAPR (all require a medical evaluation and fit testing.)

One of the great mysteries of life is this. How can you drink water (Which is heavy) and lose weight? I have pondered this many times, but over time, drinking 2 to 3 liters of water a day, will help you lose weight and keep it off. It also helps you perform better during exercise, reduces fatigue, and can even help you feel better by reducing back pain and headaches.

So if water is so good for you, is widely available and inexpensive (or in most cases free), why is it so hard to drink enough to keep hydrated through the day?
Here are my thoughts…

Water is boring and pretty well tasteless
Water is heavy and cumbersome to lug around
There are a lot of better tasting competitors to take its place
Drinking a lot of water equals a lot of bathroom trips

In my struggle to drink more water, I...

I follow more than 570 users on Twitter that leads to more than 100 new tweets an hour and I don’t have hours a day to check all the messages. Co-bloggers frequently ask me how I can follow all of them efficiently. Well, I have a few tips on this and feel free to share yours with us:

Tweetdeck: The best tool to organize your tweets. I created a Health 2.0 group to filter the tweets of the users who are writing about medicine or health 2.0.

Twitter Search: I always do a search for a few keywords to find new people twitting about my field of interest.

Twilert.com: It works like Google Alerts which means it lets you receive regular e-mail updates of tweets containing your keywords.

Filter by replies: It’s easy to discover ongoing discussions as people reply to each oth...

I just noticed that an allegedly Zango Support personnel posted a comment on one of my published posts in BlogEngage where I was talking about how the Zango software posed as a threat. Just to give them the benefit of the doubt, I would like to post his comment:
Zango Support says:
In the above post Zango is listed as a threat.
We would like to correct this listing.
Zango is a safe and secure program which will not harm users’ computer.
We are certainly aware of the ever-growing number of harmful applications that have surfaced on the Web.
Please be assured that Zango, unlike such applications, will always make the user’s privacy our top priority. Zango is a safe and secure program which installs itself only upon user’s download and does nothing without the user’s consent.

Recently, Tim of BeThumbed PayPal account was hacked because of filling up a fake form which was purportedly sent by a Paypal staff. I’ve also received a similar e-mail, but I just ignored it. Good thing I was busy blogging at that time that I totally forgot about the e-mail. I also logged in directly to their website to read if similar announcement appeared in their “What’s New” section.
Paypal had been particular in securing their merchants’ accounts. They provided tips on how to protect your account.

Fake Paypal vs Real Paypal e-mails:
- A fake Paypal e-mail usually contains greetings like “Dear PayPal user” or “Dear PayPal Member”. A real Paypal e-mail addresses the member by his/her first and last name or the business name assoc...

The National Telecommunications had imposed a law about penalizing giant cellphone companies for sending unsolicited text messages composed mainly of advertisements and promotions. Smart Telecom was penalized a total of P20,800 and Globe of P12,200 for unwanted messages.
But the penalty imposed has not prevented these companies from sending spam text messages. I am a SMART subscriber and spam messages about the company’s latest promotions and offers, especially right after I reload my account, have been regular annoyance at my inbox, some of which, I admit, are tempting. Since these are spam, which rhymes with scam by the way, I do not easily succumb to them.
Why was this measure not effective? These maybe are few of the reasons:

1. Because a P20,800 is far incomparable to what the...

It seems that Dr. Clark Bartram of Unintelligent Design has granted me a damehood. I have just learned of my enoblement to Dame Shinga Salisbury Shingashire. I shall follow in the fine tradition of people who abuse honours by recommending something for which I have absolutely no evidence-base although I feel its truthiness.Stephen Colbert's "truthiness"...describes things that a person claims to know, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or actual facts.I realise that it would fully round out my abuse if I were to have a financial or other interest in my recommendation but, sadly, I don't, not even indirectly, no matter how upstream or downstream you look. Nonetheless, I hope that the lack of any conflict of interest doesn't detract from the magnitude of the complet...
