The motivational book industry is one of the biggest and bestselling printed materials industries not just in America, but around the world. While this is completely understandable, as many books out there have the potential to actually change the course of people’s lives, it behooves us to look at some claims with a skeptical eye. Here are a few themes that are played out in motivational books that you should think about carefully before buying into:

1. Things could be a lot worse, so accept your fate.

This is one of the most bogus arguments that I hear from many motivational speakers and writers. Of course, things could be a lot worse. Things could be worse in any instance, as natural disasters, crippling poverty, and armed conflict going on around the world can attest to. At th...

Well. I told you it would happen.

In the meantime, Amazon.com is fighting the tax with a costly referendum political campaign and then likely legal action.

Not so good for this family who is leaving California for Oregon or California’s tax coffers. (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

How You Can Start Living Your Miracle Life

Last week I asked the Miracle Question from Solution-Focused Therapy. The Miracle Question is simply, “If while you slept a miracle occurred tonight that solved all of your problems, how would you know when you woke up in the morning that a miracle occurred? What would be different?” The first step, of course, is answering the question, but if you just stopped there you might be left feeling a bit frustrated. There are generally two reactions to the Miracle Question. Some people are already living their “miracle life,” and by answering the question, they simply reinforce how happy and content they are. Good for them, but what about everyone else?
What if your current reality is completely different from your miracle life? What if by answering the Miracle Question yo...

Medicines For ADHD Trying To Find The Right Balance When Looking For Safe Alternatives

The problem with medicines for ADHD is that they are now regarded with some suspicion. That is, of course, justified in that they come with a whole range of side effects and the long term risks for our health seem like a skeleton in the cupboard. They are never mentioned!
So, are these medicines for ADHD any use at all? Yes, they are very beneficial for providing some relief of ADHD symptoms but really, they are limited to that. Hyperactivity, distractability, inattention and impulsivity can all be kept under control, to a certain extent. Unfortunately many people still do regard them as a cure-all and that is the problem.
The main defect in that argument has now been demonstrated very clearly in that the effects of these medications, mostly amphetamines, tend to wear off after three years...

I wouldn’t call myself a hoarder. But I have what probably most of us have: an ordinary case of messy-itis. Underneath my bed you would find a collection of old books I’ve been meaning to read and a stack of unread old magazines or two. But after nearly tripping over a glossy mag the other day, I finally decided to face the music and deal with the growing clutter under my bed. The first thing I grabbed was a copy of O magazine’s April issue. ”Not bad,” I thought. Until I saw it was circa 2010. Yikes!
Anyway, as I randomly flipped through the issue I found an excerpt from Geneen Roth’s book Women, Food and God. It’s a book already beautifully covered by associate editor and Weightless blogger Margarita Tartakovsky here. So I’m not going to g...

Do you remember those magical times in your childhood when you could lose yourself in your imagination? You could become anything and anyone, and life was full of infinite possibilities and exciting potential. Logic didn’t get in the way, blocking your sense of freedom and joy. And if life was miserable, you could escape from it all through the creative, imaginative world you made for yourself.
It’s no accident that as children we practice all sorts of situations and personas, trying them on for size and preparing ourselves in a safe and harmless way for whatever life might have in store for us. And that free-thinking, creative imagination is more than just a trial run at real life. It’s an invaluable tool when it comes to the resilience and creativity needed to solve life’s proble...

The New Way To Find A Vein: Vein Lights For IV Access

Here’s how we used to find a difficult vein. If a floor nurse could not get an IV in, they asked one of their colleagues to try. If their colleague could not find the impossible-to-locate vein, they contacted an ICU nurse. If the ICU nurse couldn’t get one, sometimes an ER nurse or a flight nurse would try. If they still couldn’t get an IV, then I would be paged to ask if they could get an order for an anesthesiologist to try. And if the anesthesiologist couldn’t figure out how to find a difficult vein, we got a PICC line with the PICC nurse or with the radiologist or I placed a central line if the patient could not wait for a PICC line.
That’s how we used to find a difficult IV.
How do we find one now? If you’re on the floor, you use one of ...

Most people have enjoyed great successes in some parts of their lives. The problem is that most of us neglect some parts to succeed in others. Doing this corrodes your success and will over time start hurting your future chances.
If you do not find balance and succeed in all 4 areas you will start to deteriorate in all.
The Four Major Areas of Your Life Are:
Health
Family
Career
Finances
How they work together:
All aspects of your life work in tandem. Success in one area will spill over to another, but on the other hand neglect will destroy your success in any of the other areas of your life.
Some examples of problems that can arise if you don’t take care of all areas
Health –> Relationships –> Career –> Finance

Patience is the companion of wisdom. -Saint Augustine
Some people never really master the art of being patient, and at times, all of us struggle with being patient. Sometimes a certain situation or a certain person just pushes our buttons, making it much more difficult for us to remain patient. Once you lose your patience, things tend to go badly. It becomes harder to concentrate, and it becomes harder to be polite and civil to other people. If you are working on a project of some kind, and you lose your patience, you will often find that you must leave your work until you have regained your composure.
Learning to be patient takes time, and somewhat paradoxically, it takes patience to learn to be patient. Patience is acquired as you acquire wisdom, and wisdom is the child of experience. No...

Medical care continues to increase in complexity as measured by the variety and highly technical nature of the services, as well as by the size and fragmentation of the medical care system. By default people come to rely upon health care professionals who are expert in one or another selected aspect of medical care. Medical care professionals do not always relieve sickness or cure disease and their limited time with the patient is consumed with attention to the sickness and disease. Broader consideration of health during the throes of illness may seem misplaced. Secondary and primary prevention are discussions for a later date, if at all.But any discussion of disease or health between patients and health care providers takes time that is not built into how the medical care system functions...

7 Lies You’re Wired To Believe

Why do we believe the things we believe?
From the time we’re born, our beliefs are formed with each new experience. Whether it’s events which shape us or words people tell us, each piece of data works its way into our brains and becomes part of our overall programming.
Unfortunately, when we’re younger, we don’t have the wisdom to process the information in a way that makes the most of good data and deletes the useless.
So, you get what you have now – millions of people walking around with conflicting beliefs which serve no purpose other than to make our lives more difficult.
It’s time to take a leap of faith and take a chance on yourself by getting rid of the bad code in your brain and rewrite your own programming.
Below are some of the common lies we&#8217...

You know the feeling all too well…
That sinking sinking sensation that starts to swallow you whole, the second after you’ve agreed to do something you really didn’t want to do.
You know you need to leave the yes-habit behind forever, but where do you start?
The first thing to remember is to never beat yourself up. You are not spineless, a pushover or insecure, you’re a human being. For hundreds of thousands of years, humans have relied on cooperation and trading favors to keep themselves sheltered and fed. Our ancestors saw that those who weren’t willing to lend a hand found themselves without friends to help them out, sometimes to the detriment of their survival.
These days our friendships, family, workplaces and communities are also dependent on people helping one another t...

“Anyone here look like slave to you?”
In the eighties there was a hilarious BBC comedy sketch series called The Real McCoy and one of my favourite clips was from Miss Rees (Miserys!) West Indian Restaurant.
In one scene, a customer sits down and waits for the waitress to take his order. She rolls her eyes, sucks her teeth and asks “Anyone here look like slaaave to you?” (see video @ 3 minutes 31 onwards)
This lady knew she was beholden to no-one and took it to the extreme. But on a serious note, I think there is an awful lot of modern day slavery going on it our heads.
As Jean Jacques Rousseau said “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.” Of course, I am talking about psychological chains and as the apostle Peter said in 2 Pet 2: 191 “a man is a slave to whateve...

As doctors increasingly become physician-employees, there’s no longer a need to share resources with university specialists:
Three University of Virginia cardiologists have been told by the Augusta Health board they will lose their hospital privileges next week, impacting the 2,500 patients the doctors serve.
Augusta Health officials [Crow] told the doctors in a letter that they won’t be able to treat their patients in emergencies or otherwise at the hospital in Fishersville. Crow’s statement said the board is limiting cardiology department participation to doctors “under contract to Augusta Health.”
Augusta Health has four cardiologists on staff, and will soon have a fifth, he said. Limiting cardiology participation to the hospital’s own doctors will allow Augusta Health ...

Today we got a three-fer at MedicalNewsToday.com: Three articles on sleep disorders and how treatment relates to the dental field. Topics covered included dental students ill prepared to treat sleep apnea, sleep disorders hard to diagnose in kids, and nasendoscopy in predicting treatment results. More and more, we’re hearing about sleep disorder treatment by dentists – probably because an estimated 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder and about 20 million have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many of these folks hate the CPAP. Today, dentists can offer a simple, non-invasive, comfortable alternative with OAT (oral appliance therapy).
Just checkout this post excerpt from the Sleepnet.com message board:
I have just been diagnosed with mild sleep apnea within the last month. I had two...

When I was in my mid-thirties and in a bit of a panic about being single, I kept a pile of dating advice books at my bedside that I relocated to the back of a closet whenever a man came over. I studied The Rules as if they were the Gospels – and like the Gospels, I liked the idea of them, but had a very hard time living by them. I read He’s Just Not That Into You, How to Find a Husband at 35 (Based on What I Learned at Harvard Business School), and a little known tome called If I’m So Wonderful Why Am I Still Single? I told myself I was reading those books as a lark, sort of like how, when I was nine, I believed that...

You can do anything you want, if you put your mind to it!
If anyone tells you that, they’re either lying or stupid, or both.
Sure, the idea sounds nice in theory. But in practice it’s extremely dangerous.
I’m speaking strictly career-wise. Hobbies do not apply. I have no doubt you would succeed if you put your mind to practicing yoga or mulching your garden or playing the piano. Still, you would not be Bikram Choudhury or Martha Stewart or Rachmaninoff (or even Randy Newman). So instead of setting your expectations too high (opera singer, astronaut, Olympic athlete), lower them a little. You don’t need to become a renowned yoga instructor or international media mogul or famous pianist. This ...

What’s your guilty reality TV pleasure? The Bachelor? Survivor? America’s Got Talent? Of course, the granddaddy of them all — American Idol — just started a new season. Some 30 or 40 million fans have been waiting six months for American Idol to kick off. If this season is anything like last season, expect at least 50 hours of American Idol on your TV. No, that’s not a typo.
Last year I gave you a few ideas on what you could have done with those 50 hours instead of watch American Idol. For example, you could earn an extra $1,000, read several books, start writing your own book, burn 43,000 calories jogging, learn the waltz, and others. But, who am I kidding? If you like the show, you’re not going to listen to me. Heck, I’m not even ...

In Ten Ways to Find a Good Therapist I focused on how you can get promising referrals, an important step to locating a therapist who will work well with you. Once you have two or three names, then what?
Narrowing down your prospects is a lot like triage or 20 questions. You don’t want to spend a lot of time talking with someone about your problems only to find out they don’t have room for new patients. First contact is usually made by phone, but more and more frequently people are using email. Either way, making that first call or writing the first email to a prospect can add to your stress so here’s a script that I hope will help in your search:
Hello, my name is *** and I’m looking for a therapist. Your name was given to me by *** [or I found you on the Internet]&...

Radiolopolis has majorly improved its social networking feature "Friend Suggestions". Similar to other social networks such as Facebook, Radiolopolis suggests potential friends and colleagues to you - based on your profile information. These people might share similar interests with you, come from the same area as you or have other similarities. After the Radiolopolis member has logged in, a new area appears at the top of the personal home page: "Friend Suggestions" (see screenshot).
In Living Magazine this month (July 2009, p 36), an article ran entitled “Need a Dentist? Who You Gonna Call?” by Mimi Greenwood Knight. Now, you know that your target audience is women. They’re the ones who choose the family dentist. What is this women’s magazine saying to your target audience?
The article is about choosing the right dentist to fit your family ’s needs. Readers are encouraged to self assess, then consider questions such as (paraphrased):

Is the dentist an ADA member?
How long has he practiced?
Does he have digital X-ray?
Does he offer emergency care, 24/7?
Will you have to wait?
Is the team friendly?
Is the dentist conservative in his recommendations?
Will you have to see a specialist, or can the dentist do all of your work?
Will the office...

Here’s some exciting news for diabetics. In fact, the more I read about diabetes treatment these days, the more excited I become. A group of researchers took non-obese diabetic mice which had recently developed Type 1 diabetes, and injected them with an “anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody for five days, followed by transplantation of embryonic pancreatic tissue, and, for short-term glucose control, implantation of a subcutaneous insulin pellet.”

Most of the mice maintained normal blood sugars after the removal of the insulin pellet. The transplanted cells were shown to migrate to the pancreas of the test subjects.
Is this a cure for diabetes? Sorry - but no. Still, this is exciting research that tells more and more about how the body tolerates transplanted cells and tissue. Th...

One of the common questions we receive here at Psych Central is, “You always talk about the importance of finding a good therapist in order to be successful in psychotherapy; so how do I go about doing that?” Over the years, I’ve written an article or two about this topic. Now I’m pleased to present something better — a complete, free online e-book to finding a good therapist.
How to Find a Good Therapist is a simple how-to guide written by Ben Butina. Ben Butina is a therapist and trainer, and is the executive director of Westmoreland Marriage. You can learn more about this book and how to order bulk paper or e-book copies of at the book’s website, www.howtofindagoodtherapist.com.

We’ve talked about Brenda Novak here before during our “Putting a Face on Diabetes” segment. Brenda’s son is diabetic and for five years she has worked tirelessly to raise money for a cure. She’s done an amazing job!

Each year she has an online auction with proceeds going to diabetes research. The auction offers a host of things such as vacation packages, books, online classes… really, just about everything you could imagine. There is something for everyone.
This year, she raised a whopping $270,611! In five years of fundraising, she has raised $762,298. That figure just amazes me. Never underestimate what you can do! Congrats to Brenda for her amazing effort!

The makers of an over-the-counter gender prediction test say their product, the IntelliGender, will let expecting moms know the sex of their baby as early as 10 weeks after conception.
It’s a simple urine test that’s based on the science that certain hormones found in the pregnant woman’s urine, when combined with a “proprietary mix of chemicals”, will react differently depending on whether the woman is carrying a boy or a girl.
Apparenly, within 10 minutes of taking the urine test, the specimen will turn green if it’s a boy, and orange if it’s a girl.
But IntelliGender co-founder Rebecca Griffin is quick to say that they do not guarantee 100% accuracy. The test, after all, is not a diagnostic tool.
For that, you need to wait for a sonog...

Can the Internet offer a mirror into your personality? Apparently, the answer is yes, according to recently published research.
The researchers conducted the experiment on 37 undergraduate students who were interviewed and rated on how likable they were. Their Facebook pages were also independently rated on how likable they were.

The key finding was that participants rated as more likable in the flesh also tended to be rated as more likable based on their Facebook page. Moreover, an analysis of the cues used to make these judgments also showed parallels between the two mediums.
Video-recordings of the face-to-face contacts suggested it was participants who were more non-verbally expressive (through facial expression and tone of voice) who tended to be rated as more likable.
Similarly, ...

If you had a word to describe your feelings about diabetes, what would it be?
That’s the question that the folks behind the Diabetes Handprint initiative want to know. They are asking everyone to create a virtual handprint that has the word you’d like to use to help bring awareness to diabetes. In exchange for every virtual handprint made, they will give $5 to one of two diabetic charities.
I chose the word, “blessed.” That might seem like an odd word for someone who has had Type 1 Diabetes for 20 years, but I feel like getting the disease now, at this very time in history, makes me blessed. I also feel that anyone born with great health is blessed, and the word reminds me of how precious life (and health) really are.
To create your virtual handprint, log on to the ...

Contrary to popular opinion, it appears that romance doesn’t have to die a natural death in a long-term relationship. In a meta-analysis review of 25 studies with 6,070 individuals in short- and long-term relationships published last week, researchers set out to find out whether romantic love is associated with greater relationship satisfaction.
The findings?
The researchers found that those who reported greater romantic love were more satisfied in both the short- and long-term relationships.
Perhaps not surprising, those who reported greater passionate love in their relationships were more satisfied in the short term compared to the long term. Companion-like love, on the other hand, was only moderately associated with satisfaction in both short- and long-term relationships.

There are many great events throughout the year where you can help to raise money for a cure for diabetes. Walks are a common way to do it, and they are a great source of community as well.
Here’s just one. This one happened on November 1, 2008, with over 7,000 walkers. This group raised $1.2 million dollars!
Amazing.

Over a thousand folks are expected to collect pledges. Wonder if they can beat last year’s record of over $154,000? Even if they don’t, what a great event. Write and send me pictures if you go, y’all!

I’ve often said that getting diabetes as a young child has to be the most difficult thing. I got diabetes when I was in my early 20s, and it’s been a challenge enough!
So I have a soft spot for all those children that deal with diabetes. How can you not?
That’s why I like the fact that the American Diabetes Association (ADA) always chooses a child each year to be the “national youth advocate.” It’s one thing to hear people talk about the challenges of diabetes, it’s only to see a young child talk about all they go through.
This year the ADA has chosen “Chris Stokes, 17, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, to b...

Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from “A Little Bit Longer,” the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes.
If you’re anything like me, you like to do as much research as possible prior to making important decisions – such as choosing a new dentist. Luckily, there are a number of great websites online that point you to available dentists in your area. I’ve selected 5 such sites that I find particularly useful when conducting a search for local dentists.

1800dentist.com is probably the most well-known dental directory on the web. You’ve probably even seen a few of their commercials. I particularly like their service because they pre-screen dentists prior to placing them in their directory. This isn’t foolproof, but it is an added layer of protection that certainly doesn’t hurt.

2. Dentists.com

I have an idea for Google! How about Google Home Search? When I’m looking for something in the house, it would be great if I could type in my query and Google would find it for me. If the item can’t be found, Google could suggest an alternative.
Question: Where’s the TV remote?
Google: The item you searched for could not be found. Perhaps you should go for a bike ride instead. (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

This remarkable young racehorse came in first in the sixth race at Aqueduct Raceway. His owner Suzie O'Cain, will donate ten percent of his earnings to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The horse is named after Dr. Larry Norton, Breast Cancer Research Foundation Scientific Director and Chairman of the Medical Advisory board, in a cute story. Suzie felt obligated not to use Dr. Norton's first name when addressing him. However, he kept urging her to 'Call me Larry'!
So the horse was named Call Me Larry in honor of Dr. Norton and to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
