Fourth Of July: Top Tips For Fireworks Safety

As the 4th of July approaches, I’ve begun to hear fireworks exploding in my neighborhood. It’s been dry here, so in addition to the risk of injuring a person, there is a risk of setting the fields on fire. I sure hope my neighbors are being responsible.
I hope you will all have a safe and happy July 4th. Be safe and stay out of the ER.
Please use the following tips:

Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. A responsible adult should be in charge.
Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
Be sure other people are out-of-range before lighting fireworks. Small children should be kept a safe distance from the fireworks; older children that use fireworks need to be carefully supervised.
Do not smoke when handling any type of “live” firecracker, rocke...

Sometimes when I’m in need of a little inspiration, I head out for a short walk. Today, as I meandered through the tree lined path of my apartment complex, I found it.
I kept ending up in the direction of a beautiful fountain. The sound of the water as it sprung up in the air like fireworks and then gently falling as it lapped softly against the rocks was soothing. I thought about what the water represented, that regardless of whether it was thrust up in the air or moved gracefully to the bottom, it was the same unchanged substance. I realized that no matter what you did to it, the water was still water flowing in a fountain.
The same could be said about you. You may have emotions that carry you from the highest mountain peaks to the valley lows, but you are at the core that unchange...

Is it just me or is anyone else feeling the “after holiday blues?” Yep, memories of fireworks and the waft of the grill are slowly fading away. I’m already thinking about the next big thing, a vacation, a birthday, another holiday. My mind starts to dream about the end of the summer and the beginning of fall and what that will bring. I let myself get carried away into the future and then a wave of worries take over. Money, family, career, you name it. I’ve thought about it and indulged in it. Before I know it, the day is gone.
How unfortunate that we let time get the best of us and how easy it is to succumb to things like stress, worrying and negative thinking. Although it’s quite normal, it would be wonderful to catch myself in the act and stop the thoughts b...

How was your 4th of July? Did you have your hamburger and eat your hotdog too? Well, Independence Day was mild for me this year. Just a mix of work, board games and Chinese food. The only fireworks I experienced were the ones I heard outside my front door. But I think that’s what I appreciate most about 4th of July — our ability to be free. Free to choose how we spend not just holidays, but time, our thoughts and in general, our lives.
In addition to our site here, other places like Oprah.com have asked users to declare things like their psychological independence and reader independence, respectively. For the 4th, I’m declaring my right to choose how to spend my days. This means less pressure to do what everyone else is doing, releasing obligation to participate in activ...

Well with July 4th just passing I thought it would be a good time to talk about how fireworks effect those on the Autism Spectrum. Fireworks usually don’t really effect me much, but I’m sure the stimuli from explosions, people cheering and the lights would cause some issues for people with Aspergers and Autism. So….
Is there any other American holiday that brings back more memories than the Fourth of July? Probably Christmas with all its festivities, lights and symbolism of Christianity; certainly Thanksgiving because of the wonderful food, family and history but the Fourth is special. For many of us it is the holiday that symbolizes the freedom we have come to take for granted. Its celebration during the warm summer month, the long run of daylight and the National pride it represents; all come together to create memories.
Here in the Northwest, and even more so in the state of Alaska, the long daylight hours stall the firework celebrations until late in the evening. The little children try to stay awake for the bursts of glory but don’t always make it. In our community there are always firewo...

It’s been a bit hectic actually, because I’ve been packing for my week away and going in to work, and taking my wonderful daughter out girlie shopping…Now just a few minutes to myself before being picked up and whisked away to magical Kaikoura.
I did some planning ahead and found this wonderful site for your edification…
I had no idea toilet paper had been around for so long…. but here is a site dedicated to ‘toilet paper curiosities’. Again, I do the searching so you can die happy.
It reminds me of some of the medical history you can find - so that lead me off on a tangent, and I located this site. Earle Dickson invented the BandAid - well did YOU know that? And it was invented in 1921.
This site has loads of information about medical history ...

This is a repeat of the post I did last July 2. I wish you all a safe and happy July 4th. I love watching fireworks explode and light up the night sky. I do not like to take care of the injuries that they can cause. So please use the following tips to keep yourself and your children safe this July 4th (or consider leaving the fireworks to the experts and just enjoy the show), photo credit :Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.Read and follow all warnings and instructions.Fireworks should be unpacked from any paper packing out-of-doors and away from any open flames.Be sure other people are out-of-range before lighting fireworks.
Less Firecracker Injuries This Year in the Philippines

Contrary to my prediction that there will be an increase in the firecracker injuries this year (because of some patients having firecracker-related injuries that arrived in hospitals early before the New Year’s eve), the Department of Health announced that there were only 446 cases that were recorded as of 6 a.m. of January 1, with 7 of the cases as injuries due to stray bullets. Seven percent of the recorded injuries needed amputations. Also, there had been no cases of Watusi ingestion. It was reported that among the commonly-used firecrackers, the “piccolo” caused the most number of injuries, particularly among children. This is perhaps because it takes a while before it explodes and children have the tendency to go back and check on it when it hasn’t expl...

A Healthy and Friendly Reminder For Celebration of the Upcoming New Year

In a few days, we will be celebrating, yet again, another much-awaited holiday, the coming of the New Year. And in the Philippines, most people find the celebration incomplete without the use of fireworks (and unfortunately, the indiscriminate firing of guns) to welcome the new year (it was said that, as of December 21, still several days away from the New Year, there have been already 15 firecracker-related injuries, with most coming from Metro Manila). The business of fireworks this time of the year is enough to stop traffic, especially in Bocaue, Bulacan, where fireworks are being peddled in the streets and even the side of the highway. But, as a doctor who had been on several duties at the ER during New Year’s Eve, I’ve seen perhaps the worse that these fireworks can do.

Happy Birthday, America 2007

I hope we all had a great day of remembering our separation from the government of King George III. Our forefathers made this weighty decision because the King was seen as one who didn't have the best interest of the American Colonies in mind and for not listening to his subjects. May we have equal success with our current King George and one day we will be able to celebrate our freedom from tyranny yet again. These photos depict a few firework bursts from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's Kenan Stadium as seen from Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in Chapel Hill, NC.
