It was an honor and a pleasure to attend the 2010 Voice Awards, hosted by SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA is the agency responsible for helping to get the word out about substance abuse and mental health issues, so their focus is much aligned with ours.
This year’s theme was focused on honoring portrayals of men and women who serve in the military but come home to grapple with mental health issues and friends and family who often just don’t understand how to help. It also featured a lifetime achievement award given to Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter for her decades’ long work on helping advance mental health care in the U.S.
The annual ceremony is held to honor the realistic and often-poignant depiction of people struggling ...

Iranian Daily Thinks Carla Bruni "Deserves To Die"

The Kayhan daily, a state-run Iranian newspaper, published an article on Saturday calling Carla Bruni-Sarkozy a “prostitute” who had “kicked up a human rights fuss,” in response to France’s First Lady’s public support of an Iranian woman who has been sentenced to death for adultery.
Iran’s foreign ministry asked that the newspaper refrain from insulting foreign dignitaries, but the paper’s message hasn’t changed: On Tuesday, it again reiterated the statement and added that Bruni “deserves to die”.
The paper deems that, because Bruni has admitted to her own affairs in the past, she deserves a sentence similar to the one of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman she was defending.
Wow, Iran. Just wow.

In a live press conference First Lady Michelle Obama discussed an exciting announcement in regards to the ‘Let’s Move‘ campaign and the ‘Partnership for a Healthier America’ who have begun to seek out a solution to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity. The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, comprised of sixteen food product companies, have ‘pledged to cut 1 trillion calories from the food they sell’ as well as change products to reduce calories, fat, sugar, sodium and portion size.
The four main pillars of the Let’s Move program are to make schools healthier, increase the amount of physical activity children get at school and at home, give parents the information to make healthy decisions, and increase access to food for all families.

Warmer weather means it’s time to bare arms, and we’re working hard to tone our biceps and triceps for all those strapless summer fashions. Just one look at Kate Hudson, Evangeline Lilly, Kelly Ripa, and Anna Paquin’s lithe limbs and you’ll be reaching for the dumbbells. How’s that for motivation?
Check out our gallery to see who else is giving us arm envy:

Last week, we told you about “5 Moments: A Group Portrait of Five Ages In the Lives of Women” in Esquire’s May issue, which featured a photo of author and Blisstree columnist Giulia Melucci.
But here’s the thing – other than Esquire’s hat-tip to Giulia, we’re kind of pissed about the piece. It features portraits of women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, but frankly, the magazine doesn’t make the prospect of female aging look so hot. Their photos of women in their 20s are taken from flattering angles at the perfect moment, when their smile, eyes, and hair are just right. But the older the women get, the more the photos resemble mugshots: Unsmiling, squinting old crones stare straight into the camera in far less flattering poses. Just what are you hin...

Childhood Obesity: Should You Put Your Kid on a Diet?

In our fast food, TV-obsessed nation, childhood obesity is a huge problem. Poor diet and lack of exercise has led to an epidemic among children in which childhood obesity has increased by three times over the past 30 years. One in three children are overweight or obese, and the country spends $150 billion each year to treat conditions related to obesity. Let’s face it – our kids are fat!
Overweight Kid
Being overweight as a child can lead to the development of high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, orthopedic problems, depression, and a number of other diseases and ailments. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.
Recently, First Lady Michelle Obama has been leading a nationwide campaign called “Let’s Move”...

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter will provide opening remarks for a discussion on the mental health crisis in Georgia tonight, Feb. 16, from 7-8:30 p.m. at The Carter Center. This Conversations at The Carter Center event is sold out but will be webcast live at www.cartercenter.org
More than 130 patients have died under suspicious circumstances in Georgia’s public psychiatric hospitals over the past seven years, according to an exposé by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Carter Center has been a leading voice for change in Georgia’s mental health system since this crisis came to light, and has worked to identify strategies to transform Georgia’s shame into a model for the nation.
Carter Center Mental Health Program Director Dr. Thom Bornemann will moderate a panel of...

Last week while attending the 25th Annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy, I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting for a few moments with Thomas Bornemann, Ed.D. who has served as the Director of The Carter Center Mental Health Program for the past seven years.
If you didn’t know, The Carter Center has been a leading force in helping to coordinate national mental health policy over the past two and a half decades. It does most of its work behind the scenes and is rarely noted for what it does best — bringing all stakeholders to the same table to talk and work on how they can advance policy and mental health agendas in the country. They do this through year-round work and collaborations with legislatures, advocates, organizations, non-profits, and other...

The Carter Center does good work to help promote de-stigmatizing mental health information and journalism, so I thought this announcement was worth reproducing here to help them publicize this year’s fellowship awards.
After receiving a record number of applicants, the Carter Center’s Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism — the only journalism fellowships exclusively for mental health — announced today the winners of its 2009-2010 awards (see below for full list of fellows and their project topics). Since 1996, the fellowship program has educated more than 100 journalists, who set the standard in their field for accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental health issues.

We here in the U.S. are deep in the throes of the longest executive selection process in the world. Even though the first votes were cast just a couple of weeks ago, the campaigning has gone on now for months (and there are many months to go before it’s over) and that’s just for the primaries!
I am something of a political animal; I’ll admit to that. But I try to only bring up politics to this forum when it comes to specific issues. I have my political views, you have yours; no need mucking up the waters of our relationship with the “who to vote for” conversation.
I bring this issue to the community today, simply because I was not the one to bring it up. The subject of this posting brought this up herself – so, fair game.
In a speech this week, one which seemed to be headed tow...
