By Walter OlsonFederal law makes it illegal to “take,” “possess,” or “transport” a migratory bird except under permit. If you worry that this sweeping language might give the federal government too much enforcement power, perhaps you are one of those horrid House Republicans who, according to Bryan Walsh in Time magazine, are in the grip of “antigreen ideology” and want to “essentially prevent” agencies like the Department of the Interior “from doing their jobs.” Who else would object to laws meant to protect Nature?
It’s a pretty safe bet that Walsh hasn’t met the Capo family of Fredericksburg, Virginia. According to a report on broadcast station WUSA, and now being picked up far and wide by other news out...

The Chilean salmon farming industry has been severely affected by disease caused by infectious salmon anemia virus. Salmon eggs shipped from Norway to Chile in 2007 are the cause of the outbreak (New York Times):
A virus that has killed millions of salmon in Chile and ravaged the fish farming industry there was probably brought over from Norway, a major salmon producer has acknowledged.
Infection salmon anemia virus is a member of the orthomyxovirus family, which also includes influenza virus. The virus causes disease in Atlantic salmon and has caused economic losses on fish farms in Canada, Norway, Scotland and Chile. We discussed the virus on This Week in Virology #41: Fish flu.
For years I have touted the health benefits of the “Mediterranean Diet” and encouraged patients to eat like the Europeans. Fresh farm vegetables, olive oil, fish and red wine have been linked with longevity and good health. I just read in NPR news that young Italians are forgoing the eating patterns of their elders and are imitating the “U.S. diet”. The result is soaring obesity, just like in the United States.
According the the article, young Italians ages 6-12 are sitting in front of the TV and are eating fast foods and soda. In just three generations, the eating habits and activity of kids has changed from their healthy grandparents. Italian health officials say obesity is reaching epidemic proportions.
Part of the diet changes are a result of (more&#...

Any pet owner can attest to the power of their animal friend. As an owner of fish, guinea pigs, parakeets and a dog, I highly agree with that statement. The unconditional love of a pet has helped me heal heartbreak and sadness on more than one occasion.
My mom has, in a sentence I will never forget, thanked me with tears in her eyes for bringing our dog into her life. A dog she once told me to get rid of had broken her down and melted her heart, and brought back what pain, sadness and disappointment over one’s lifetime took away. She said our dog, now passed, opened her heart again.
Of all the pets I had, however, the pet that has surprised me the most has been my 5 year old black rabbit. A lot of people get boggled by rabbit love. Those who don’t own a rabbit laugh and joke ab...

DHA and Fish Oil For ADHD How Docosahexaenoic Acid Omega 3 Helps Your Child With ADHD

For many years now, scientists and researchers have been looking into the possibility of DHA and fish oil for ADHD. Children with ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are described to lack focus and concentration, are hyperactive and have short attention span. To others, they may seem ‘difficult’ as you wouldn’t see them seated on their chairs for a long time, and even if you do catch them on their seat, most likely they are doing something to keep their hands busy.
You might not think that ADHD is very serious, or life-threatening, but it could be when your child is too busy to be doing something else he doesn’t eat or sleep anymore. It’s not that children with ADHD are not intelligent (many of them have, in fact, high IQ levels), but that they ar...

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The Science Behind Their Potential Heart Health Benefits

The Biology of Omega-3 fatty acids: (Just a little science:)
When fish, flax-seeds or Brussels sprouts pass through the intestine, pancreatic enzymes transform the fat to free fatty acids. These acids are quickly taken up by the cells. Once in the cell, these fatty acids enter the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and cytosol–places that you might recall because your mom helped you make a Cell sponge cake in 7th grade Biology.
In the cells, the Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, DHA and EPA) exert their healthy influence in three major ways:

in the control of chemical messengers;
in the flux of ions—cell electricity;
in the smoothness and health of the cell membrane.

That’s enough about cells.
How do these (good) fats help our bodies?
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce Inflammation:
–Omega-3s ...

The following post is by Hilary Smith, author of “Welcome to the Jungle: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Bipolar But Were Too Freaked Out to Ask” (Conari Press, 2010) as well as a cool blog to go with it, Welcome to the Jungle.
We’ve all heard about “mood foods” that can promote wellness for people with bipolar and depression–fish oil for brain health, oatmeal for stable blood sugar, chocolate for, well, chocolateness. But it’s also important to think about how we eat. How we eat can have just as big an impact on our mood as what we eat, yet it often gets neglected in conversations about bipolar and food. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy mood through mindful eating practices.

1. Make eating an art.
How you eat is sometimes a r...

An Embarrassment of Riches?
Much has been written here about the dietary supplement business, a multibillion dollar industry with powerful political connections, and about the woeful inadequacy of regulation which allows widespread marketing of supplements without a solid basis in science or scientific evidence.
The veterinary supplement market is a pittance compared to the human market, but still a billion-dollar pittance that is growing rapidly. Unfortunately, the resources available for good quality research in veterinary healthcare are also a pittance, and it is not at all unusual for our pets to suffer, or even be euthanized, as a result of treatable diseases for want of money to pay for needed care. So $1 billion a year spent on nutritional supplements may not be such a good deal if ...

Your heart is the most important organ of the body because it supplies oxygen and other nutrients to the rest of our . Without the heart working – life is impossible. Therefore it’s so important to keep your heart healthy. However this is not so easy, because coronary artery disease, caused by heart blood vessels clogging, is the number one killer in the US. Why? Because it causes heart attacks as well as heart failure and sudden cardiac death.
When statins were invented including blockbuster Lipitor, some scientists claimed, that by the year 2000 heart attacks would disappear. But it didn’t happen. Why not?
There are 2 main reasons why drugs did not work as well as we thought:
1. Cholesterol and triglycerides are not the only risk factors for coronary artery disease. T...

The topic of fish oil and ADHD has been often discussed lately in the news, magazines and on the internet. By the time you finish reading this, you’ll have a better understanding of how the use of fish oil impacted a group of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and also why fish oil and ADHD are so often used together in the same sentence. From the findings of this research you will be able to draw your own conclusions on whether fish oil is an effective means of treating ADHD and if it is a course of action you would want to take in your own life either with yourself, or a loved one.

One of the study researchers, Peter Kowey of the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, told a briefing at the American Heart Association meeting taking place this week “the fact that this drug failed in this population makes it highly unlikely that you would be able to prove efficacy in other groups,” according to Reuters.
Indicated for reducing high triglycerides, the implication is that, rather than quickly expand Lovaza into a full-blown heart med, Glaxo will now have to struggle to expand beyond the health-store crowd. For its part, Glaxo says it will continue to review the data in the context of other studies, but conceded in this statement that, “in this patient population, there was clearly no benefit from Lovaza.&#...

However, many physicians expert in omega 3 nutrition are questioning the design of the study as the omega 3 most associated with an effect on mental health is EPA, not DHA, and will maintain that saying that fish oil does not for post pregnancy depression is inaccurate.
Bihar State, India – April 2010
A boy holds a small fish he found while digging out a ditch around a rice field. Food insecurity is a root cause of childhood malnutrition in Darbhanga District.
MSF runs a nutrition program, in cooperation with the ministry of health, treating children with severe acute malnutrition in Biraul Block, in Darbhanga District in Bihar State, one of the poorest states in India. The program currently consists of a stabilization center, one fixed and three mobile ambulatory therapeutic feeding centers where patients come for weekly check-ups and to receive rations of therapeutic ready-to-use foods. From the start of the project in February 2009 up to May 2010, more than 2,920 patients were enrolled in the program and nearly 250 admitted to the stabilization c...

Even as I love the autumn season, it is full of anxiety for me.
I start to mourn the ending of summer when I hear the cicadas grow louder the last two weeks of August and when I feel the crispness in the air at that time, which brings less sunlight and longer nights. Then the back-to-school craze: buying shoes, supplies, backpacks, etc. and trying to catch up on the homework we didn’t do during June and July. By the time I make it to the parent-teacher conferences in early September, when I hear about all the things I’m supposed to be doing with the kids, I’m well into panic mode.
The other day, my therapist and I talked about a few coping exercises to keep my anxiety from disabling me this time of year.

1. Pick a sound or object to be your Xanax.
My therapist looks up t...

What the hell is wrong with the water in the Delaware Bay? The New Jersey E.P.A is performing tests on the oxygen levels of the water, but they still don’t know what caused tens of thousands of fish to wash up on the shores of Southern New Jersey on the Delaware Bay. And man, do these fish stink. Not even the seagulls want them. Those flying rats eat rotting garbage, so there must be something very wrong with the fish – aside from the fact that they’re dead.

While it was being fixed, I tried to write on the blog a few times and actually succeeded once or twice, but it was a great struggle for me. There are about 6 or seven combinations of my kids names and numbers that I use depending on how much the particular web site yells at me for not using enough letters or numbers or in some sites, exclamation points! Bad enough that you have to have passwords to read or write things on line, then they tell you your regular password that you can remember because you use it all the time, isn't good enough for them. Hey, everyone — good news! Scientists have discovered three new species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Oh, wait — that Gulf of Mexico. Turns out, not only is the BP oil spill killing underwater species we already knew about, but it’s also eradicating species we didn’t even know existed. Another giant win for BP.
Next, perhaps scientists will discover a tribe (school?) of mermaids, who will declare war on us for decimating their watery home. Mermaids can breathe underwater – we’d definitely lose.

We’ve been delving into vitamins and supplements lately, and it turns out that John Dempster, our handsome Naturopathic Doctor, was onto something with his fish oil supplement recommendation. We know people have been taking the omega-3 fatty-acid-rich supplement for ages, but new research shows that fish oil can reduce the risk of breast cancer. (Plus, it makes your skin purty!)
Post-menopausal women between the ages of 50 and 76 who took fish oil were 32% less likely to develop certain types of breast cancer than women who didn’t take fish oil. Doctors recommend trying to get your daily dose of fish oil from actual fish rather than the supplement, but it seems like both will do you good. You know what this means: Sushi, sister! As if we needed an...

Your dog doesn’t drive a car, use electronics in an office building, or drink bottled water (he doesn’t, does he?), which sounds pretty eco-friendly to us. But according to Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, dogs are worse for the earth than SUVs. We’ll have to read the book to find out exactly why, but we’re guessing it has to do with unsustainable pet food and plastic toys. Eco Salon suggests that if you aren’t already a dog-owner, you may want to try a more eco-friendly pet like a hamster, canary, fish, or cat.
But…but…but…We love dogs. We think that as long as you try to make your pet’s life as green as you can, you should adopt that puppy you’ve been visiting in the shelter. After all, who el...

Q. I eat a lot of cold water fish such as herring and sardines for their
healthy fat profile, but am often very surprised by their high
saturated fat levels. For example,a can of Crown Prince Natural brisbane sardines in water has 17g of fat, 8g of sat fat and 2g omega-3. Is the saturated
fat in fish any different or better than the saturated fat in a hamburger?

A. It's true that fish (like all animal flesh) contains some saturated fat. In the listing for sardines here on ND, only about 15% of the fat is saturated, while about 50% of the fat in the Crown Prince brand is saturated. Both brands contain about the same amount of omega-3s. Frankly, I'm not sure why that brand has such a different fat profile.

But as for the saturated fat itself, it is chemically very simil...

Much to our chagrin, we couldn’t get that stupid “Give me back that Filet O’ Fish” song out of our head for weeks when that McDonald’s commercial was airing. Thankfully, we somehow doubt that this Lipton Green Tea commercial will have the same effect. The song definitely isn’t as catchy, and, above all, this fish really gives us the creeps. He has teeth. And a tongue. And don’t even get us started on those oysters. The whole thing makes us crabby.
What the hell do fish have to do with green tea anyway? We’d rather see little tea bags singing and dancing or something. Anything but fish with human mouths. But we have a feeling we’ll be seeing this sea creature again soon – in our nightmares.

It sounds like an aquatic sci-fi flick: Heroic robot fish lead distressed regular fish to safety. But this scenario could actually happen, thanks to Maurizio Porfiri, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He hopes that his remote control fish could lead helpless fish stuck in murky, oil-filled waters to safety (which would’ve come in handy in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the BP oil spill).
Apparently, schools of fish will “trust” and follow an impostor, as long as it’s silent and moves like a fish. Porfiri’s robots aren’t ready for action yet, but it’s a cool idea that could have many successful implementations in the future. Aside from an oil spill situation, robots could be used to guide birds to s...

Pregnant women should be allowed to eat more fish - TelegraphNutritionists are arguing about the safe limits of fish during pregnancy following new research that supports the idea that too little of the long chain essential fats omega 3 DHA in pregnant women can result in and possibly cause developmental problems.'Fish consumption among women of child bearing age and girls is currently restricted due to concerns about the presence of potentially harmful contaminants in fish such as dioxins and methylmercury. Many of us try to be as eco-friendly as our budgets allow. Green thinking probably has spread to a variety of areas in your life – shopping, eating, cleaning habits. But what about Fido or Mittens? Check out these tips on how to make your pet’s life more eco-friendly.
1. Check out what type of cat litter you buy; if it’s lumping clay, it could expose you to carcinogenic silica dust. Switch to one made from pine, wheat, or newspaper, like Swheat Scoop.
2. Make sure the flea or tick treatments you use aren’t toxic. They could contain pesticides that leave residue on your pet’s fur, and cause them to have brain or nervous system damage. Check out some natural treatments for animals here.
3. Reconsider what your pet eats. Some pet foods contain chemi...

Hunter-Philanthropist may seem like an unlikely breed of modern man, but the Sportsman’s Channel (yes, that is a channel) is encouraging just that. The channel has a new non-profit initiative to feed the hungry called Hunt.Fish.Feed., and the basic idea is that hunters bring their kill (and fishers bring their catch) to impoverished people in Los Angeles, including those in shelters.
The thought of a burly hunter slamming a dead deer carcass onto a soup kitchen table make us snicker, but it’s hard to criticize a program whose goal is to feed the hungry. We do wonder if the organization could have used the money spent on bullets, transportation, permits, and butchering to get a lot of fruits and vegetables for L.A.’s hungry, though.
As Care2 also points o...

Honestly, the only thing I remember smelling like is "Princess" by Vera Wang, not fish. I wasn't always on insulin. I was on Glipizide for 3 years and Metformin for almost 1 1/2 years; my choice. I found an old bottle of Metformin. I popped the top opened; no fish smell. I know I am a day late and a dollar short but I need to know if Metformin really makes people smell like fish?!? Be BlessedCherise (Source: Diabetes Daily)

Sizzling hot, Victoria Secret Supermodel, Miranda Kerr hits the beach in a colorful bikini as the mercury rises.. Miranda studied health and nutrition before doing modeling fulltime, and she follows a strict organic diet. She likes salads, chicken or fish for lunch.
Not only humans, but fish can’t escape the rise in mercury, and I’m not talking about the temperature; but the rise in contamination from the methyl form of the element. Basking in the summer heat (and looking at Miranda) can make you a bit looney, but methylmercury ingested or inhaled can make you severely impaired mentally and physically. (never clean up a broken thermometer with unprotected skin, and never “play” with or handle the mercury drops.)

More American's--especially the baby boom generation--are learning the importance of eating healthy. Research studies indicate that eating Mediterranean-style seems to reduces the risk of mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's.There are numerous studies that indicate this style of eating helps reduce cardiovascular risk factors like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes. All of the above are linked to Alzheimer's. I have wrote about about all these topics previously on this blog.Subscribe to The Alzheimer's Reading Room--via EmailThe Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan combining elements of Mediterranean-style cooking.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Cardiac Treatment

How many times have we heard about omega-3 fatty acids? All the time, right? It gets so that when you hear about how great they are, you kind of ignore the information.

But several research studies not only talk about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for prevention of heart disease, they also talk about how beneficial they are in treating it. That’s huge. One study says that omegas “help in therapy for a number of conditions, such as atrial fibrillation, heart attack, atherosclerosis and heart failure.”
When you think about the damage done to your body during heart disease, this news is truly fabulous. It means that it’s never too late to be better heart healthy.

Let’s play Jeopardy!
Answer: 33.9 billion on CAM.
{cue the Jeopardy! music}

Question: How much did Americans spend on complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) in 12 months?
On top of the trillions of dollars (with a “tr”) spent annually on health care in the United States, Americans are spending almost 34 billion - with a “b” - on alternative treatments.
According to the NIH/National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, about 38% of Americans use some sort of CAM to either stay healthy or help manage or treat illness or symptoms of illness. CAM covers a wide variety of practices, too numerous to mention. But the most commonly known are:

acupuncture
chiropractics
homeopathy
supplements

The Center broke down the costs even further:

Friedland.Creutzfeldt Jakob disease is commonly known as mad cow disease. Creutzfeldt Jakob is a disease for which there is no treatment and it is fatal. The diseases can be contracted by eating parts of an animal infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease). You might recall that an outbreak of "mad cow" in England set off quite a reaction several years ago. There was a good result as many countries outlawed feeding rendered cow material to other cattle because the disease is so easily sp...

Stanley Fish has an interesting new post (over on his New York Times blog) that reflects on a panel discussion at NYU Law School on the question of what kind of Supreme Court justices we want. Do we actually desire a judge with “empathy”?
Fish gave particular attention to “Judge Sotomayor’s now famous or infamous speculation that a wise Latina might know something an old white guy did not.”
His analysis aligns with op-eds that Jon Hanson and I have written recently for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the anecdote he relates at the end is an excellent demonstration of just how blind we can be to the power of situation and, in particular, how easy it is to become lost in one’s own perspective.
Here is an excerpt of the post

Doubts cast on Oily fish preventing dementia

Recent findings have cast doubt that ingesting oily fish prevent dementia
Data from a trial of more than 800 older people initially showed that those who eat plenty of oily fish seem to have better cognitive function.
But factors such as education and mood explained most of the link.
Researchers need to clarify what, if any, benefits fish oil has on the ageing brain, they wrote in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Ageing.
It goes to show you statistical associations are not necessarily a cause and effect relationship.
However Oily fish is still good for the heart so I think a weekly dose of sushi isn’t a bad thing

“… ESR1 [gene] amplification is an uncommon mechanism for estrogen receptor overexpression in ovarian cancer occurring in about 2.1% of the total number of ovarian cancers. In general, this frequency parallels the fraction of ovarian cancers reported to show complete response to antiestrogenic [anti-hormonal] therapies. Given the strong predictive power of ESR1 [gene] amplification for [...] (Source: Libby's H*O*P*E*)

December 27, 2008While most of the attention is focused on Chile's cheese-related outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes, health investigators are also working to contain another – completely unrelated – outbreak, linked to consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. In just two weeks, from December 8th to the 21st, Chile's Ministry of Health has received reports of 493 cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus gastroenteritis – 399 of them in the week of December 15th, alone. Most of the illnesses were clustered in just three regions, Maule (218), Bio Bio (137) and Los Lagos (118).Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a salt-loving bacterium that grows best in warm ocean waters, such as are found along the coastlines during summer months.
