Food Truths, Food Lies, written by family physician Eric Marcotte, M.D., may be the most refreshingly evidence-based diet book of the decade. You will not find a single mention of super-foods, magical berries, or supplement “must-haves” in the entire book. What you will find is the cold, hard truth about why many Americans are overweight, and what it takes to become a healthy eater.
Marcotte writes for the average American – his simple language, matter-of-fact tone, and regular reminders of what the reader has learned, make for a quick and memorable read. Although it’s clear that Marcotte has carefully distilled his dietary advice from the scientific literature, he refrains from burdening the reader with too many footnotes and references.
Sports nutrition products--drinks, bars, powders, and supplements--are selling well, but not necessarily to athletes.

According to industry research,
the biggest market for these products are people who don't actually
exercise, but are attracted to the idea of doing something "healthy."
In other words, they're consuming sports drinks and bars as a substitute for actual exercise.

Now that is some magical thinking. Many of these products do offer
proven benefits. They can increase stamina, strength, endurance, and
enhance muscle growth. In my experience, however, susceptible
consumers vastly over-estimate the benefits. More importantly, they
completely ignore the critical fact that these benefits only occur in
the context of a serious training regimen and optimized nutri...

Sometimes it just feels good to give your brain a rest – to lie back, flip on whatever reruns are playing on TBS, and stop thinking for an hour or two. But after a few days of prime vegging-out time, we need to stretch our brain, just like we do our bodies. And we found some great ideas on how to do just that from iVillage.
If you’ve scorned yoga in the past, it might be time to reconsider. Regularly practicing yoga and meditating improve cognitive functions, as well as emotional processing, by increasing cortical thickness, which can happen in just eight weeks. Yoga can also positively affect the parts of your brain that deal with stress, sensory awareness, self-awareness, and judgment.
Yoga isn’t the only physical activity you can do that will help your br...

Results were mixed on which would be the best Detour Runner Bar. Chocolate Chip seemed the most popular but the Lemon Yoghurt and Chocolate Peanut Butter were a close second and third.
But the winner of the ‘one-month supply of Detour Runner Bars’, according to my trusty random number organizer, is….
Steve
who said ‘I just started training for a half-marathon in May. I think the Peanut Butter Chocolate bars would be a good energy boost’.
Congratulations Steve. You should be getting an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
And good luck to you with the half-marathon. I’m sure these detour bars will help.
As for the rest of the us, there is always a chance to win tomorrow.

An email from Mike Street from RD.com (the Reader’s Digest site) led me to this comprehensive list of 31 Simple Ways to Prevent Cancer. Turns out that I already do a number of them - drinking green tea, taking a multivitamn, walking every day, and getting my 15 minutes of sunshine. But RD.com also listed a few that I would never had considered, such as…

Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating.
Coat barbecue food with a thick sauce. Grilling meat can create a variety of cancer-causing chemicals. But researchers from the American In...

Well, it’s finally here. - the very first Healtbolt Carnival and it is huge.
You know, when we first decided to do this, we were a little nervous. After all, what if we gave a party and nobody came. A natural fear, but one, it seems, that wasn’t warranted. ‘Cause it looks like everyone, and I mean everyone, has come to the party.
So put on your glad rags, grab a drink and start mingling…
And don’t forget to pass the word on. After all, the more the merrier.

A whole bunch of random goodness for you this week around the blogosphere. So fun to see all our health compadres kicking out great articles. Hope you find something particularly useful. Enjoy!
A new blog that’s taking the world by storm, Weighting Line has a very interesting perspective on 6 ways to commit discrimination against the obese. Is blaming global warming on them one of those ways?
And speaking of weight, if you’re new to the weight loss game, but you’re looking to hook up with a gym, how do you know which one is the right fit? The fabulous MizFit explores that very notion with some awesomely specific advice.
Of course, getting fit also means eating right. At Best Health Mag, find out why you should be eating more of nature’s candy…bananas!

Ali is the First Female Biggest Loser!

Well, we have a winner…and she’s female!
Moments ago, Ali became the first female winner ever on NBC’s The Biggest Loser. With a total of 112 pounds dropped in a 6 month period, Ali does not look the teensiest bit like her old self. She now looks fit, healthy and happy as can be.
The thing that strikes me most about Ali is her “In It To Win It” attitude. She said she was going to be the first female Biggest Loser, and by golly, she was. That seems to be a key to long-term weight loss. You have to become the person you want to be, instead of just thinking of becoming that person. To do so, of course, takes effort each day, one day at a time. Small things here and there add up to make a giant difference. And while it’s unlikely that the majority of us will...

Here is food for thought for the profit-oriented among us (yours truly included). Can you make money off of Obese America? Here are some facts: Sixty-six percent of Americans are obese or overweight Seven million are more than 100 pounds overweight. $33 billion in services are spent each year on health care for the obese. So, it should not be surprising that a widely followed web site that tracks the stock portfolio of Wall Street mavens (Warren Buffett) and not so mavens, and some outright…well, you get the point, has created, (I am not making this up) an "Obesity Index”. I thought it would be educational and, yes, profitable to take a look at it: The Obesity Index &nbs...

Is your workplace making you fat?

If you are like many Americans, you spend more of your “awake” time at work than you do at home. At home, I can control my environment. I don’t keep calorie dense foods in the house. I read food labels and use a food scale to help me determine portion sizes. I have a personal trainer who comes to my house five days a week – rain or shine, whether I am in the mood or not. And, I have my husband – a guy who is religious about good nutrition and physical fitness – to serve as my live-in health coach. But, at heart, I am weak. I love, love, love to eat, eat, eat. I eat when I am stressed out and I eat when I am relaxed. Eating right does not come naturally to me. I have to work at it. I do like to exercise, but when I get busy, it is usually the first thing t...
