This miniature American Flag quilt is similar to this one and this one, only much smaller. It is a basic brick pattern for the strips. Each brick measure 0.5 in X 1 in. I placed a purple heart in the star field. The quilt is machine pieced and quilted. It measures 7.25 in X 11.5 in. The purple heart is machine appliqued. The back features “fast triangles” for hanging ease. The quilt is for sale on Etsy. (Source: Suture for a Living)

It seemed, in hindsight, to be less of a political rally, such as go on during an election campaign, and more of a small-town welcome to a Prime Minister. It might well have been both. On the lawn in front of a specially-built stage across from the band-shell, between beautiful Stewart Park and the stately [...] (Source: My journey with AIDS)

Is there any other American holiday that brings back more memories than the Fourth of July? Probably Christmas with all its festivities, lights and symbolism of Christianity; certainly Thanksgiving because of the wonderful food, family and history but the Fourth is special. For many of us it is the holiday that symbolizes the freedom we have come to take for granted. Its celebration during the warm summer month, the long run of daylight and the National pride it represents; all come together to create memories.
Here in the Northwest, and even more so in the state of Alaska, the long daylight hours stall the firework celebrations until late in the evening. The little children try to stay awake for the bursts of glory but don’t always make it. In our community there are always firewo...

2. Complementary and alternative allergy tests : review article. Morris, Adrian 2006
This article reviews the common tests employed by complementary and alternative medical practitioners to diagnose allergies and intolerances. These tests include VEGA, applied kinesiology, hair analysis, auriculocardiac test, stool and live blood analysis, leucocytotoxic tests and IgG ELISA tests. None of these tests has proven to be as accurate as specific IgE measurement in allergy diagnosis and they cannot be recommended.

In Pennsylvania, Bob Wargo runs a flag football program for special needs kids, each of whom is paired with a high school football player, as noted in today’s Phillyburbs.
Well, Charlie is getting a strong set of shoulders and earlier today we went for a walk up a long and steep hill; he ran in front (yes, ran), bent over horizontal and going full speed ahead……….

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which regulates banks, and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) have delayed mandatory compliance with the Red Flag Rules for six months. Why should you care? As a dentist, if you extend or arrange to extend credit to any patient, you must comply with the Red Flag Rules.
The purpose of the rules is to keep everyone safe from identity fraud/theft. Your dental practice will need to come up with a written program to identify the “red flags” of identity theft. According to the FTC website, “These may include, for example, unusual account activity, fraud alerts on a consumer report, or attempted use of suspicious account application documents. The program must also describe appropriate responses that would prevent and mitigate the...

When I had been in the States a couple of years, I more or less had them tapped, Americans that is to say, and their funny little ways. They have lots of funny little ways, a source of great hilarity to foreigners such as myself. I noticed that quite often, they would have a box of matches in the loo. [translation = rest room] Being the knowledgable person that I am, I knew that this was sound evidence of closet smoking. Sneaky little Americans shut themselves in the loo, together with the obligatory extractor fan for a quick fag. [translation = nicotine hit] Possibly they were also members of the mile high club, but on land, despite puritan evidence to the contrary. I deduced, that Americans locked themselves in the loo to have sex and then a post coital. What other conclusion would any ...

Is drug discovery rational?

Organic chemistry as taught in the undergraduate classes does seem to follow a logical sequence. However, when it comes to drug discovery, rationality often does take a flight of fancy. No doubt there are practitioners who almost convince you that rationality does exist in this field. I often tend to be one of them, and then there are papers like the one reviewed by ‘kyle’ and i take a few cautionary steps back.
As listed in a previous post, thiol is a pretty zinc binder. One study, involving design of inhibitors for a zinc based enzyme, had this observation to make. The stereospecific amino group on the carbon adjacent to the one containing the thiol group displayed no interactions with enzyme residues when simulated. To avoid this painful stereocenter-inducing-scheme to get t...
