This blog post, I’m convinced, will be a real disaster.
I mean, just think of all the things that could possibly go wrong! If I post it at the wrong time of day, no one will read it. If I don’t write with super-engaging language and in a clever tone, potential readers will bypass my post for something else on the internet that’s far more exciting.
Oh, and I’ll probably (unknowingly!) insert a blatant typo that my eyes refuse to notice — even after several rounds of proofreeding. Or proofreading. Yeah, that second one.
I’ve painted a pretty gloomy picture there, haven’t I?
It feels a little awkward to admit that I’m a pessimist. The world really seems to be riding the wave of optimism these days, at least as far as...

We’ve all cut down on printing unnecessary documents in order to save trees and energy. But according to Mother Jones, attaching 4.7 megabytes worth of information to an email creates as much greenhouse gas as boiling a tea kettle 17.5 times. That’s only four photos from a digital camera. But…it’s not real paper — how is this possible?
The environmental impact comes from redundancy. When you send four photos to 20 people, that’s a lot of duplicate data that’s created. And that data requires equipment to be downloaded. For every 20 people you send the same files to, that’s 20 copies of the files and 20 devices being run to support the data. Try sending your friends and family a link to your Flickr or Facebook account to view imag...

A new obesity report is out, and the findings are hugely depressing. The fattest states in 1991 were as large as the thinnest states are in 2009. Not all that long ago, the U.S. was much trimmer little lady.
So what’s changed: More heavily-processed foods, less exercise, and too much time on the computer? We’d be fools to not point out the correlation between the decline of rollerblading and the increase in Americans’ waistlines. But seriously, what do you think has happened?

No one objects but comparing the weather of Chicago with the weather in The Netherlands is like comparing apples and oranges.

Growing up how many times did you hear stuff like, “Who do you think you are?” or “Pride is a sin. Be humble.” It could have been well intentioned people, like our parents, who thought they were giving us good advice or maybe it came from people who, for whatever reason, wanted us to keep our light under a rock.
There’s such a thing as the kind of pride that goes before a fall. I get that. Another word for that kind of pride is hubris; the excessive, empty pride that some people on Wall Street had way back in 2008.
Pride can also be a good thing. It can nurture our self worth. Too often we don’t allow ourselves to bask in that warm glow of prideful accomplishment when we’ve done something well. Those old voices keep us from being completely OK with...

to understand your text and recommends images, related links, tags and
more.
I am using Blogger to write my posts and setting up the Zemanta Firefox plugin was pretty easy.
When having the Blogger dashboard open it presents a special window next to the concept post.

The content of the post is being scanned and at least 5 things are happening automatically:
based on semantic search it offers to add links to parts of the text. I see many Wikipedia suggestions. I wonder if I can direct this anymore, i.e. with telling it to insert my Delicious links.it presents suggestions for Tags & Labels. They can be included with one click. I do not see an option to add extra labels.Pictures are shown the should relate to...

I have been using my current laptop for two years and a half. Knowing how unreliable these PCs can be I am starting to back up my documents, files, videos, E-books, and audios. It has took me a long time to collect all of this stuff and I wouldn't like to lose it all in a blink just because of some stupid glitch or an electronic-nervous-breakdown!Because of that and because I bought a new digital camera a couple of days ago I wanted to have somewhere safe to store my photos. And where else would I do that other than Flickr (one of my favorite sites!)? So tonight I upgraded my account to a "Pro" account. Now I have "unlimited" storage capacity. By the way, free accounts can only hold 200 pictures, which I exceeded a long time ago! Here are some of the features you get with the Pro account:Un...

At least this is what Paul Boutin suggests you do. He is a blogger himself, writing for the Valleywag blog, and for The New York Times, and for The Wall Street Journal, and for Slate, and for Wired magazine. And in the latest issue of Wired magazine he wrote a provocative and interesting article about why you need to stop blogging.
“It’s almost impossible to get noticed, except by hecklers. And why bother? The time it takes to craft sharp, witty blog prose is better spent expressing yourself on Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter.” - writes Boutin and adds, “That said, your blog will still draw the Net’s lowest form of life: The insult commenter.”

"Way back in 2004, when we last held an election, no one was complaining that there wasn't enough to see or read on the Internet. And that was before YouTube, Politico, Huffington Post, Twitter and Facebook became daily or hourly necessities for millions. In 2004 newspaper websites were still mostly "shovelware"--the paper edition reproduced. They weren't bloated with blogs and video and interviews with the reporters who wrote the story. But now everyone has a blog. The opportunity for us all to express an opinion is wonderful. Having to read all those opinions isn't." --- Read more - TIMEPhoto credit: Annie Mole - Creative commons. Thanks for reading :)

Conclusions
Of the 25 different metrics I used, Gregor won 17, Peter Ladner won 6, and they tied on two. Gregor Robertson was the clear winner. He won every single category in the search engines if you don’t add the 2nd NPA Vancouver website.
Gregor Robertson’s Online Campaigner was Kori Brus. who has a blog, and twitter account and is active online While the twitter jacking was a definite screw up, overall he performed far superior to his counterpart in Peter Ladner’s campaign, if in fact Peter did have a dedicated person for that. I couldn’t find out by googling it. Clearly not a good sign.
Both campaigns could have done better in engaging people on Youtube, Flickr and Twitter instead of just old fashioned push broadcasts. They both could have had created groups o...

This was exactly my opinion last night while I was watching the debate. The constant repetition of “my friends” was spooking me out, but I didn’t think anyone else had noticed it, until I read the following.
Via The Volokh Conspiracy - Dear Senator McCain:…
Dear Senator McCain:
Repeatedly calling me and everyone else in the United States “my friends” is extremely annoying. In part, it’s just an irritating phrase. Beyond that, I’m not your friend. I don’t know you, and, from what I know of you, I don’t even really like you. Sorry to focus on such superficialities when the world economy is going to Hell, but you probably lost more votes with your constant repitition of “my friends” than from anything Obama said.
Sincere...

First of all, I must congratulate Other Patti for writing down my official 2000th comment yesterday! As a celebration, I don’t know what she will do, but I’m going out to get more sushi at lunchtime.
I slept late this morning, so Buck has gone out to find me some fruit (yes, I know I can change the time zone settings on my blog, but the thing is, as Ruben hinted at a bunch of posts ago, I forget to change the time zone back). Fruit is the one thing I crave that doesn’t (necessarily) have added sugar in it. What I find truly amazing is the sheer amount and variety of foodstuffs that have added sugar in them.
I am haphazardly still trying to follow the advice in my new favorite book, “Anticancer: A New Way of Life” (David Servan-Schreiber). Yes, I like it very m...

One thing that I have learned this past week, when I have been busy not posting to the blog, is that Boulder has to be the capital of sushi-making in the world. I think that we here have to have more sushi restaurants per capita than, say New York City.
Our current favorite sushi restaurant is Sushi Zanmai. We have been there for dinner the past two nights. They make a lovely Kobe beef sushi, and I must have eaten them out of their stock of Kobe beef. We sit at the sushi counter so we can keep an eye out on our food while it’s being made.
I also love this city because I’m believing this place is imbuing me with health. I look and feel healthier than I looked and felt before the cancer diagnosis. I figure that that’s a good thing no matter how you look at it.
Tea is coming...

After starting an account at www.flickr.com and falling in love with it, I noticed that you can make groups where you can share content (images and videos) and discuss subjects of interest. And you know me, I would not lose a chance to give it a try! So, I did. I just started this new group called "Medical Public Domain" where I intend to collect good quality medical images that are free of any copyright restrictions. You can join for free! So be sure to! If you already have an account on flickr you have no excuse! lolNo, seriously, don't you remeber those nights where you were searching on google for that xray or CT or microscopic bacteria image?? What you have never done that? What, it is only me? Then I guess I am from Mars!Anyhow, I think this would probably make it easier for someone ...

Very wet day here in Rockingham. I got soaked between the car and the café. You can’t see it in the photo but there is actually an island a couple of kilometres across the bay, Garden Island. It is barely visible today. Just waiting for my oceanside lunch of fish & chips to arrive, hoping my patient doesn’t have her baby just yet… (Source: Baggas' Blog)

To remember Evan Kamida, here’s a small and lovely thing to do: Take a photo of flowers at a swingset and post it to this Flickr pool. Shannon Des Roches Rosa and Jennifer Graf Gronenberg have posted more information.
Here’s Charlie’s swings, with an orange flower for Evan.

The swings are on a playground on the part of the Jersey shore where we go every year, and that is the place where Charlie is most at home. He’s had many, many a ride on those swings and we’ve had many a meal, with family and with friends, on that very picnic table, with a view of the bay, so peaceful, so lovely.

Well this is part of the memorial to HMAS Perth, a guided missile destroyer that served from 1965 to 1999, including distinguished service in the Vietnam war. Rockingham is the site of a major naval base, which is I guess the reason they put this memorial here. Also nearby there is a huge ship’s gun turret, presumably from the Perth.
In the background you can see the blue CBH grain terminal wharf, where I spent many summer days while I was in medical school. I had a job there most summers shovelling grain, unloading trains and loading ships. The top tower of that wharf has one of the best views around - was a great place to sit and eat my lunch or dinner, or just hang out when there wasn’t much work to be done. The last one I had was a cheap one that rusted from disuse a few years ago. Well I haven’t been doing so great thus far, being so busy that I’ve only ridden it 3 or 4 times, and only short trips.
Well tonight I went out for a ride along the cycle path near our house, and was well rewarded with some great views of a gentle sunset over the ocean. All too often we don’t appreciate what a beautiful place we live in. I need to work at getting out on my bike more often, and scenes like this are a great incentive to do so. This is in one of the better parks in Rockingham, with plenty for the kids to do - but I have no idea what the point is of these totem pole things. Is it some weird new age thing? Do they hold occult fertility rituals or sacrifices here in the dead of the night? Certainly doesn’t look indigenous to here.. strange.
Speaking of parks, keep your eye on this blog for some upcoming video of “The Best Playground I Have Ever Seen” and it’s right here in WA. I’ll post it up here over the next few days.
Anyway I’m off to dance around the totem poles.. :p (Source: Baggas' Blog)

This one’s from last week - Shoalwater Bay. My friend used to live a street back from this beach so we spent a lot of time down there as kids. I particularly remember one episode where we got freaked out by an angry seal when we tried to swim to Seal Island. We ended up turning around and going back to shore. Good times. Boring looking photo I know, but significant to me. This is the Safety Bay Scout Hall, where in grade 4 in 1984 I was part of the first ever class of students at Maranatha Christian School - we had a combined class of grade 4 - 7 students and around 40 kids total in the school.
Now I’m parked outside the current, much huger, Maranatha College waiting to collect my grade 2 son. I noticed the other day in the office here that they still have a few plaques with my name on up on the wall. Scary how fast time flies. Life is too short… (Source: Baggas' Blog)

You could call it a beach, or you could call it a sea weed depository … either way Safety Bay is a nice spot.
Now let’s see if this works - the flickr blog posting is a bit inconsistent - the photos I send from my phone always make it to flickr, but don’t seem to then make it to blog every time. It’s a bit hit and miss - so here goes…

[yep - the photo made it to flickr but not to the blog. Although it’s then easy to send it on using one click from the flickr website but it’s a shame the mobile posting is not so reliable…] (Source: Baggas' Blog)

Visited my dad tonight who had just been given a massive pile of old LPs by his brother, who was doing a big clean up. Amongst it all there were a few gems and I managed to grab a heap, some of which you can see in the picture. Mostly it’s 70’s stuff - Bowie, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Iggy Pop, Deep Purple, Led Zep and many others. I also inherited a Yamaha turntable so I can play them - it just needs a new stylus. Was funny showing the boys how we used to listen to music in the ‘olden days’ when I was a kid, before CDs were invented. Strange how the world has changed so much in such a short space of time… (Source: Baggas' Blog)

Seems almost compulsory for web2.0 enthusiasts to write a brief greasemonkey article these days!
Here’s my attempt. Nothing whatsoever to do with bioinformatics; instead, this one resizes Flickr images on Profilactic mashup pages, such as this one. My aim is just to convince you that greasemonkey development is quite easy, even for JavaScript novices like myself.

What’s Greasemonkey then?
It’s a Firefox extension that allows you to install user scripts - small programs written in JavaScript which modify the appearance and functionality of a web page.
Where do I learn about it?
A little dated now, but still by far the best “jump in and start” resource, is Dive Into Greasemonkey. You can also try the GreaseSpot wiki.

Deepak, Neil, and Cameron have set up life streams which aggregate the feeds from services from sites like Last.fm and Flickr into a single set of posts. I’m a bit wary of this doing this because I already get easily distracted by Ruby and bioinformatics blogs, but Neil gave me an idea when he wrote about using these technologies to track research. I currently use Subversion to back up my project files, and I noticed Twitter status updates are very similar in length to subversion log messages. I created a short script so that every time I do a subversion repository check in, the message is also sent to Twitter.

It is with a happy note then that I share with you a Houston that has such a dynamic within. Having lived here for not very long, it is wonderful to have these venues to meet with one’s ‘kin’. Meeting folks who will match my very own, “@timeless” with their “@outofbalance” or “@superman” unleashes a smiling butterfly that says, “yowzah!”.
