In his new book, The Seed: Finding Purpose and Happiness in Life and Work, international and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jon Gordon tells the story of Josh, a guy who, like so many of us, has lost his passion at work. When Josh’s boss challenges the young worker to take two weeks off to assess his attitude and intentions, Josh heads to the country. There, a farmer hands him a seed and tells him that when he discovers the right place to plant the seed his purpose will be revealed to him.
This tale takes readers on a quest to explore their own passion, purpose, and happiness in life and work. The themes presented are most appropriate for graduates just embarking on their path.
Here, then, are nine such lessons presented in the story, in the words of Gordon:

from David Bradley

What is entropy? – This property of all matter – this collapse into disorder – is given a name: entropy. Things that are disordered have greater entropy than things that are relatively more organized. A glass of water, in which the molecules of water itself can move around relatively freely, is more disorganized – has greater entropy – than a block of ice, in which the molecules of water are trapped into a rigid, organized array.
Research at recess – Twenty five 8-10-year-olds, under the guidance of University College London neuroscientist Beau Lotto, found that bees can learn complex rules to solve puzzles, and that individual bees have personal preferences, suggesting the insects may possess some form of personality. As bold as tho...

These are my recent science book finds for the New Year

The science of kissing – When did humans begin to kiss? Why is kissing integral to some cultures and alien to others? Do good kissers make the best lovers? And is that expensive lip-plumping gloss worth it? Sheril Kirshenbaum, a biologist and science journalist, tackles these questions and more in The Science of Kissing. It’s everything you always wanted to know about kissing but either haven’t asked, couldn’t find out, or didn’t realize you should understand. The book is informed by the latest studies and theories, but Kirshenbaum’s engaging voice gives the information a light touch. Topics range from the kind of kissing men like to do (as distinct from women) to what animals can teach us about th...

Alagoas – July 23, 2010
Boys search for bricks by the Mundau River, where there used to be houses, before the floods.
After the tragedy caused by the rains in June, many of the affected families in Alagoas had to deal with mental-health problems and face poor living conditions. Aiming to alleviate the sufferings of this population soon after the disaster (26 / 6) MSF sent a team to assess the situation and provide the necessary support. Currently, three MSF tents are in operation, with special focus on psychological support to victims. In addition to the consultations held in the tents, the team also visits homes, camps and collective shelters. (Source: MSF Blogs)

To say that my past month has been a little busy would be like telling a woman in her 42nd week of pregnancy that she’s a little pregnant! In the past two weeks, I’ve spent several days in both Florida and Alaska for work. To add to that busy schedule, Caryn’s (my fiancée) graduate school commencement festivities occurred, so hopefully you’ll forgive (or at least understand) the lull in my postings.
However, I didn’t plan on missing any posts last week because I was staying at a “business class” hotel in the capital city of Alaska. I expected Internet access at a business center where I could jot my tri-weekly musings and post from the land of the midnight sun. This was not the case, and I just had to look around and accept that a couple of postings were going to be miss...
