I’m 40 years old and while I’m not the workaholic of many people I’ve met in my life, I’d say that I do spend a lot more time working than most. Even when you run your own business — in fact, maybe primarily when you run your own small business — you work more than a typical person who works 8 to 5 or 9 to 6 or whatever. The problem with running your own business is that work time and non-work time meld into one. There’s no delineation. And while that’s great for Psych Central, it certainly may not be ideal for my own mental health (not to mention physical health).
My troubles pale in comparison to many people’s troubles today, especially in this economy. But I keep thinking back to my times in the countryside of Ireland, of France, and...

I’ve written quite a bit on fibromyalgia and I had featured someone with it in a Company’s Calling piece (Company’s calling - a journey with fibromyalgia ) when I wrote Help My Hurt for this network. I never knew there was a National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day - and I bet many of you didn’t either.

Fibromyalgia is one of those hidden diseases that is still very much a disease that’s fighting to be recognized (Fibromyalgia debate continues ), which adds to the difficulties faced by those who live with it. According to the National Fibromyalgia Association :
In 1993, May 12 was designated as the International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND) by T...

Nurse on the moneyIt seems it is not just GPs who are on the gravy train. The head of the NHS in England received a huge pay rise of up to 32 per cent at the same time as presiding over a below-inflation pay deal for nurses. Ministers face accusations of allowing the budget for senior NHS managers to almost treble in the past three years, from £1.2m to over £3.4m.David Nicholson, who became NHS chief executive in 2006, earned the equivalent of between £195,000 and £200,000 in that financial year. His salary rose to £215,000 to £220,000 in 2007-08 – a rise of between 7.5 per cent and 12.8 per cent. In addition he received £37,600 in a second homes allowance, bringing his total pay package to a maximum of £257,600, an increase of between 26 and 32 per cent on the previous year. The I...

When Autumn paints the leaves and they are reflected in quiet rivers the beauty is doubly relaxing and uplifting, especially when paired with special music. Caregivers can take a therapy break and unwind while they watch this video. Enjoy and best wishes. Kristi (Source: The Caregiver's Beacon - Resources, Links, Ideas, News)

This coming Saturday marks the 187th birthday of Florence Nightingale. Known as “The Lady With the Lamp,” Nightingale was one of the founders of modern nursing. To celebrate her birthday, I dug out this comic book PSA about her from Ben Casey #3 (Dell, 1962).
