Yes, I’m posting this two weeks after St. Patrick’s Day. It’s been a rough month. Erin go bragh! And England too. Hell, the whole damned place.
The Chieftains, Tim O’Brien along with a few young stepdancers toward the end of “Shady Grove.”

David Gibb performs “A Begging I Will Go.”

Scottish band Capercaillie featuring the soaring vocals of Karen Matheson.

Harlequin’s Glance (wtf kind of band name is that?) from Vienna performs “Raggle Taggle Gypsy.”

Riverdance as it was in 1994 when created, as a short interval act in a song contest called Eurovision. Less is more, in my opinion. Dancer Jean Butler and choreographer/dancer Michael Flatley at their best.

Van Morrison performs “Marie’s Wedding.”

Treating The Common Cold

For the last week I have had a cold. I usually get one each winter. I have two kids in school and they bring home a lot of viruses. I also work in a hospital, which tends (for some reason) to have lots of sick people. Although this year I think I caught my cold while traveling. I’m almost over it now, but it’s certainly a miserable interlude to my normal routine.
One thing we can say for certain about the common cold — it’s common. It is therefore no surprise that there are lots of cold remedies, folk remedies, pharmaceuticals, and “alternative” treatments. Finding a “cure for the common cold” has also become a journalistic cliche — reporters will jump on any chance to claim that some new research may one day lead to a cure for the common cold. Just about any re...

Vaginal Steam Baths: A Medical Opinion

A spa in California is offering vaginal steam baths, in which spa-goers squat or sit on open stools over a tub of hot steam, as a cure-all for menstrual, digestion, and mood disorders:
The V-Steam: Inspired by an ancient ritual practiced for many years in Korea. The steam from the herbal tea rises and absorbs into your skin & orifice. This steaming treatment stimulates the production of hormones to maintain uterine health, aids regular menstrual cycles, helps correct digestive disorders while soothing the nervous system. The natural antibiotic and anti-fungal properties are said to help maintain internal health as well as keeping your skin looking young. (30 min: $50. Series of 6: $180.)
It’s a douche, folks. A $50 douche made with mugwort and 13 other herbs and having a fancy Korea...

Unscientific Medicine: What’s The Harm?

Any promoter of science-based medicine often faces the question: “What’s the harm?” What is the harm if people try treatment modalities that are not based upon good science, that are anecdotal, or provide only a placebo benefit? There are generally two premises to this question. The first is that most “alternative” placebo interventions are directly harmless. The second is that direct harm is the only type worth considering. Both of these premises are wrong.
The pages of Science Based Medicine (SBM) are filled with accounts of direct harm from unscientific treatments: Argyria from colloidal silver, death from chelation therapy, infection or other complications from acupuncture, burns from ear candleing, stroke from chiropractic neck manipulation — the list goes on. ...

The country may be doomed, but here’s a toast to our little corners in hell. “The Devil’s Pocket” by semi-defunct folk-rock band from Philadelphia. Happy Birthday, America.
The Devil’s Pocket
by The Low Road
Took a walk through the Devil’s Pocket
Passed a bar with an Irish name
Round the back there was a ladies entrance
And through her door I heard a woman say
I’ll take you in this Devil’s Pocket
I won’t go nowhere else
I’ll love you in this Devil’s Pocket
It’ll be our private little corner in hell
The bartender wants a glass of whiskey
Dropped his ring down the kitchen sink
Little girl looking at him mighty strangely
Who’s to say what his late wife would think
She’d say I’ll take you in this Devil&#8...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
On Friday word came down that Irish folk singer Liam Clancy, 74 years old, had died. Within minutes Facebook was awash in the news. Radio DJs announced they were planning tributes. Others, including me, posted Clancy Brothers videos.
I found a clip of Liam Clancy singing “The Patriot Game,” the ballad written by Dominic Behan, brother of renowned Irish playwright Brendan Behan. I had not heard the song in years, but even so, I discovered I knew it by heart.
I am neither Catholic nor descended from Irish ancestors, but you could not have guessed that from my family’s record collection. While my parents also had bagpipe music and such evocative titles as “Folk Music from Many Lands,” we had every record ever released by ...

Taylor Mitchell, 1990-2009
To quote a movie I saw: How could something as important as life be so fragile?
But fragile it is.
Toronto singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell was only 19 years old, but even at that tender age, she had already put out an album. She was recently nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award. And she was on tour, performing for audiences in Nova Scotia.
On the afternoon of October 27, Taylor was hiking Cape Breton’s Skyline Trail when she was attacked by two coyotes. A nearby hiker heard her cries and summoned help. Taylor made it to a hospital, but she died the next morning, her mother by her side.
You can stream a few of Taylor’s songs on myspace and watch a video of her last performance on ustream. Come November 21st Taylor would have found out whether or...

LBF has a voice that makes other voices weep into their pints with envy, and she and Jim harmonise well. Now, it should be known that my taste runs to the eclectic, at best, and i have no musical talent at all; so all of my comments should be taken within that context. They should not, in case any Antipodeans are reading, be considered as attempts at "coaching".Their harmony sounds very natural; it sounds so natural that I imagine it is either genuinely natural, or the product of much hard work.Anyway, they hugely kicked ass, and LBF actually silenced the pub with some a capella...
