It has come to my attention that, in the weeks since I last appeared in this space, that certain rumors have sprung up regarding my absence. Although I am deeply reluctant to dignify such rumors with a response, I feel compelled to clear the record. Some reports have alleged that I had been called to New York to mediate negotiations between the National Football League and its players. Others have written that I have closeted myself to finalize my work on the Grand Unifying Theory much sought for in the field of physics. Still others, without making any effort to obtain confirmation from me, have stated that I am roller-skating across Russia. None of these reports have any truth. It pains me to say that there have been more scandalous speculations as well. Some allegedly responsible media o...

"Mommy?" "Yes, sweetest?" "This Bob guy that writes this blog? He sure has been serious since he started writing here!" "Well, yes, darling, I guess he has been. Bob's had some things to say that he thinks are very important, and he hasn't wanted to make light of them. Does that bother you?" "Not really, I guess. It's just that he's really not all like that, Mommy." "What do you mean, dear one?" "Well, Bob IS serious sometimes, and he's gloomy sometimes, and he's even cranky sometimes. But he makes a lot of jokes too, even though they're not very good ones, and he really likes those terrible puns, too. How come he hasn't made any of his jokes yet?" "Be a little patient, dear. Like I said, he's been talking about some serious things. He may also still be a litt...

Laugh at Myself

Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects.” -Arnold Glascow
One of the most amazing experiences in early recovery from alcoholism was the night I told a story against myself.
I laughed at my foolishness in a new light and every one at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting laughed with me.
The incident that I reminisced about no longer was painful. I had learnt to laugh at myself.
“As we heal we learn to laugh at ourselves with love. We begin to see all the wonderful oddities and contradictions in people – little faults that endear others to us. We see that striving to be perfect is going far beyond the call of duty, and we discover that life does not need to be a duty, that it can be enjoyed. Life can be fun.

Tommy, the Devil, the Amish, MMR and single immunisations

I always liked, and still like, the rock opera, Tommy. When I was at university, I saw the definitive (and only acceptable) staged production of it, put on, oddly, at the Oxford Union. It was awesome. (Is there anyone else out there who saw it?) Charles Sturridge, father of another Tom, played Tommy. A few years later I managed to get a ticket for the star-studded but inferior stage version. It was appalling. The touts were out. I was offered £150 for my ticket on the door. I wish I had taken it. And the film? Don’t bother.Tommy did not have congenital german measles (rubella). He was traumatised in childhood. We do not see many deaf-blind children now, thank God. But take a trip to Pennsylvania and visit the Amish people. You have heard of their furniture. You remember that "Amish" fil...
