Additions to Suboxone Talk Zone and SuboxForum

I would like to add a couple things to my pages about opioid dependence. For those not familiar with the sites already included, you can find most of them through links at a home page called Addiction Remission. I have ‘bupe tube’, a collection of educational videos; bupe news, a site that has news releases related to opioid dependence and buprenorphine, and a page that has items for purchase– including my book, and even underwear with the ‘talk zone’ insignia! Nobody has purchased a pair yet, for some reason….
Ideally, I would like to drop the ‘subox’ part of the name to the blog and forum, and replace it with ‘bupe’ or with ‘opioid’. I’m worried about losing readers, of course, and losing the little b...

Stopping Suboxone

I recently received a question about stopping Suboxone (buprenorphine)…. I deleted the message but I remember the bulk of it, and I have a copy of my response. I thought that someone else out there may find it useful, so here it is:
The question:
I have decided to go off Suboxone after that was recommended to me by almost everybody. My doctor told me to taper off by going down to 2 mg per day, and then take 2 mg every other day, then every third day, and stopping after I get to every 4th day. I followed those instructions and I am taking it every other day, but I am now getting sick every other day. Is this a good way to stop Suboxone, or do you recommend another way?
My response:

I’m not certain who is giving you advice. More and more, the standard of care is to keep people on bu...

I was witness to an interesting discussion earlier this week at the Wisconsin Technology Network’s Digital Healthcare Conference in Madison, Wis.: Is meaningful use a floor or a ceiling?
One panelist, Judy Murphy, VP of information services at Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, said Stage 1 meaningful use has caused the health system to alter its own IT plans by activating a patient portal and moving more toward interoperability sooner than intended. “We wouldn’t have decided to give electronic copies of clinical summaries at discharge [without meaningful use],” Murphy said.
But Murphy believes it’s a floor for many of the criteria, such as the requirement that 30 percent of patients have at least one medication order entered electronically. “No one would ...

BackgroundLast year we posted about how two medical societies which received funding from a drug manufacturer tried to persuade the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to deny approval of a generic competitor to one of that company's products. The medical societies were the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF). The company was Sanofi-Aventis and the product involved was its anti-coagulant derivative of heparin, Lovenox. At the time, we noted that the SHM CEO denied the need to specifically disclose funding from Sanofi-Aventis in the letter to the FDA, since he asserted the letter was about "providing the best, most effective care to the hospitalized patient." If so, I wondered why the SHM ha...

Sanofi contributed more than $5 million to two medical groups and a Duke University researcher that encouraged the FDA to delay approval of a medicine the drugmaker feared would undercut its blockbuster Lovenox bloodthinner, according to a US Senate Finance Committee report released this morning.
The Society of Hospital Medicine, the North American Thrombosis Forum and Duke University thrombosis expert Victor Tapson wrote to the FDA to argue that generic versions of Lovenox may not be as safe as Lovenox, but the letters did not mention any ties to Sanofi, according to the Senate findings, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Just the same, the FDA last summer approved a generic from Momenta Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz, the Novartis generics unit (back story here and here)....

This is the comment that I received from someone, “EMR provides benefits to the patient (better patient care) and payers (cost savings).”
Of course, we could argue these two points until we’re blue in the face. In fact, feel free to argue either point in the comments below. That will be interesting. I’ll just say that there’s the potential for better patient care and the potential for cost savings to the payers. Whether the potential will become a reality will be a fun discussion in the comments.
When I saw the above statement I started to...

I am pleased to announce that many portions of FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) website are now available in Spanish. This new resource for the Spanish-speaking community will provide key information to our stakeholders in our common goal of reducing the tremendous toll of illness and death from tobacco use through FDA’s new role in tobacco product regulation. By increasing access to our content to the Spanish-speaking public we not only increase the reach of our message, but also make further in-roads into communities that play a key role in tackling this important public health issue.
Over the last several months, I’ve heard from many stakeholders in a number of ways about the overall need for CTP to provide key tobacco product information in different languages. This was e...

The Council on the Ageing Society is one of the Global Agenda Councils created by the World Economic Forum in 2008. It addresses global issues associated with our ageing society and has the task of challenging prevailing assumptions, monitoring trends, proposing solutions, devising strategies, and making public policy proposals. It is composed of scientists, public policy makers, academics, physicians and business leaders, including our very own Alvaro Fernandez.
The first report of the Council on the Ageing Society was published this month in Global Policy. In this first publication the Council presents the basic principles that will guide its views, actions and policies in the coming years.
We emphasise the power of knowledge as a policy tool. Evidence-based information about individual...

I’m not sure about the make-up of readers of this blog. I know that there are about 20,000 page views each month, but I don’t know how many are by people addicted to opioids, people taking buprenorphine, family members of addicts, or physicians who prescribe buprenorphine. If you fall into that latter category– i.e. if you prescribe buprenorphine, or if you prescribe other medications to treat opioid dependence such as Vivitrol or methadone– consider joining the group at linkedin.com called ‘Buprenorphine and other medication-assisted treatment of opiate dependence.’ If you already belong to LinkedIn, you can simply follow this link to join: http://www.linkedin.com/groupRegistration?gid=2710529

Imagine walking into the room of a patient with ascites and pulling out your iPad (which you were just using to put in orders on another patient), pulling an ultrasound probe out of your pocket, connecting the two, and finding a fluid pocket from which to drain the abdominal fluid.
We’ve already shown how iPad’s can be useful in the OR. Now they, along with other tablets and smartphones, can be applied to bedside diagnostics and therapeutics to enhance patient safety while reducing costs. It’s a pretty exciting prospect being put forth by an mHealth startup called Mobisante. And having won awards at an MIT Enterprise Forum as well as the Mobile Health Expo, others certainly seem to buying in as well.
Mobisante, an mHealth company based in Redmond, WA, has recently been showing a new ...

The move comes as the FDA grapples with formulating rules for how the pharmaceutical industry can adopt social media.

I have written about this topic multiple times, but perhaps a summary is appropriate. More and more evidence and clinical experience suggest that buprenorphine is best considered a long-term ‘remission agent’ for opioid dependence. Such a conclusion would have been obvious years ago if not for the hesitancy to do what has been suggested by addictionologists for decades, and treat opioid dependence as a DISEASE. While many people pay lip service to addiction being a chronic illness, the reluctance, particularly by AODA counselors, to fully accept a medication for the condition is clear evidence of the stigma that continues to force addiction into the realm of ‘character.’ AODA counselors would do well to do some serious soul-searching on this issue– ...

Acesulfame Potassium
Well, i’ve been clean with the help of Suboxone for 14 months now. Throughout my treatment I’d been getting tongue blisters and ulcers at least two at a time. I’ve probably had them six to eight different times in this 14 month period. I realized something wasn’t right, and started investigating, trying to figure out what the problem was. I watched the foods I ate and the things I drank. Nothing seemed to work; they just kept coming back. So, the only thing I could think of was the Suboxone. I read the pamphlet that comes with the medication. The artificial sweetener in Suboxone (Acesulfame K sweetener) is what I am allergic to. I have been allergic to artificial sweeteners my entire life. I had been taking a...

Over a year ago I wrote about the transdermal formulation of buprenorphine available in Europe called ‘Butrans.’ One problem with the treatment of opioid dependence using buprenorphine has been the limited dose options available; while 2 and 8 mg sublingual tablets are fine for maintenance, they are wholly inadequate when it comes to tapering off buprenorphine. The ‘wall’ of withdrawal symptoms that people discover as they taper past 2 mg is a product of the ceiling effect of buprenorphine– so useful on the way up, but so challenging on the way down! At 2 mg, the level part of the dose/response curve ends, and each decrease in dose causes a drop in opiate effect and a drop in tolerance… and so an increase in (albeit temporary) misery. Smaller d...

The old days
I worked for several years as the medical director of a residential treatment center in Wisconsin, leaving the position several weeks ago. On my last evening in the place I took a moment to look around and think about how addiction treatment has changed in the past decade. I looked at the pictures of the patients in their charts, who were mostly in their late teens or early 20’s. The most common class of ‘drugs of choice’ were opioids, including oxycodone, heroin, methadone, morphine, and hydrocodone. I thought about the different but similar program that I attended ten years ago, filled mostly with addicts and alcoholics in their 30’s and older. I wonder if Bill W would have come up with the same twelve steps, had his target been not 50-year-old alcoholics...

Some of you may be up on ‘affiliate marketing’.. for those who aren’t, there are many variations on the idea out there. The basic idea is that an ‘affiliate’ gets a percentage– 30% in this case– of sales of the products. Since my e-book goes for about ten bucks, the affiliate share is little over three dollars. Other products sell for $10 – $20.
It costs nothing to be an affiliate, and once you are set up there is no action required on the affiliate’s part except receiving money in a PayPal account.
For those of you who prefer watching to reading, here is a video with a few thoughts about why will power is NOT any kind of strategy for staying clean. As I describe, believing in will power is not only unhelpful; it even INCREASES one’s chance for relapse, and serves as a frequent justification for the using that leads to full-blown relapse. Please share comments at Buprenorphorum.com.

Several weeks ago an article with a provocative title was posted at Suboxone Forum. I don’t remember the exact title, but it was something like ‘Toxicity from High Dose Buprenorphine (HDB). Before everyone gets too excited, there was nothing all that new in the article, which consisted of three case reports about deaths of people taking buprenorphine. One case consisted of a suicide from very large doses of buprenorphine, one was a death from combining buprenorphine with other respiratory depressants, and the third death was in a person with liver failure who took buprenorphine with other psychotropic medications. There are a couple issues brought up in the article that are worth mentioning.
First, I appreciate their use of the term ‘high dose buprenorphine,&#8217...

Remember back when I used to write those ANGRY posts, where I would take people to task for their silly comments about buprenorphine? I remember them. THOSE were the days! I was always ready to go nuclear on anyone who tried to debate whether buprenorphine treatment was ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ C’mon punk– MAKE MY DAY.
I’ve become more circumspect since then (OK, so I had to look the word up– at least I had HEARD of the word before!) I got tired of going to bed with heartburn every night. I also realized that people will do what people want to do. I have no power over them, and don’t WANT power over them. Addicts must find their own truth, and all I can do is provide information when people are ready to ask for it. Liv...

I’m so close to meeting Kathy Griffin with this contest, details and link in today’s post at the bottom for the video, and my poetic writing, ah plea.
See the last post for the video, and please watch it. I managed to get 374 people to watch it in a week. My one and only competitor in this contest has 100, and her video isn’t that great.
Plus, when I went to the forum on the Kathy Griffin site to add something to my contest post where the link to my video is found, I saw a note to me from the Team Griffin Webmaster.
Now for those who don’t know I made a video to win a DVD. When I went to submit it, I saw I missed the bloody deadline. Disappointed, I shared it with friends etc, and it still has gotten about 450 viewings.
In the video I say that I was not successful meeting K...

I have organized my web efforts around a central ‘hub’, at a web page called ‘Addiction Remission’. Thank you for checking it out, and for sharing it with other people who struggle with addiction in themselves, in their family members, or in their patients. If you have a moment, please give the site a ‘plug’ on your favorite social network, twitter, blog, or search engine. I rely on you– and appreciate your help.

Regular readers of this blog know that I am a big fan of buprenorphine treatment of opiate dependence. I used to spend hours arguing with people over whether or not buprenorphine represents “a drug for a drug”, before eventually deciding that those who must be talked into buprenorphine treatment are poor candidates for buprenorphine treatment. I am now less motivated to engage in such discussions, but for those who are interested, my arguments are scattered throughout the archives of the medhelp.org addiction board, the commentary section of my YouTube videos, and in earlier posts to this blog.
The motivation for this current post stems from two recent incidents. The first was the reaction of a group of physicians at a dinner several nights ago, when I was speaking about a diff...

I will share some thoughts that I left at a discussion at a ‘linked in’ group about addiction. I was responding to someone who was equating addiction and physical dependence in a baby born to an opiate-addicted mother. My feeling is that such women are given way too much of an attitude by the nurses and others who care for them, and that was the motivation behind my response. Read on:
There are many differences between physiological dependence and addiction to substances. For example, people who take effexor are dependent– and will have significant discontinuation-emergent side effects– but they are not ‘addicted’, which consists of a mental obsession for a substance. The same is true of beta-blockes, in that discontinuation results in rebound hypertension...

I will introduce this topic by typing my response to a reader who asked whether buprenorphine, the active ingredient in Suboxone, shows up in urine drug tests. More specifically he asked whether companies have the ability to test for buprenorphine. I will end the post with a question… so please stick around to the end!
Typical 10-panel urine dipstick test
There are tests out there—multi-panel dipstick tests– that react ‘positive’ to Suboxone in the opiate panel. Or at least there used to be; I used to see that reaction with a brand of tests I no longer remember, that I used several years ago. For the past couple years, every dipstick brand that I have purchased has responded ‘negative’ to buprenorphine (or naloxone for that matter) as an...

That’s the day on which it’s customary to give gifts of cash and money to your favorite privacy advocate. No, not really. Though Hallmark hasn’t gotten a hold of it, it is a day on which some extra attention gets paid to privacy issues.

I frequently point out the lack of outrage over the epidemic of opiate dependence and the consequence of that epidemic. I live in ‘middle America,’ and sometimes it seems that everyone I know has some connection to opiate dependence– a relative who is an addict, a friend who died, a parent who is in prison. My perceptions are admittedly distorted by the work that I do, but I don’t know who has the more accurate perceptions; me or the people who seem surprised to hear that most high school kids know where they could get heroin. Addicts who I treat who come down from the U.P. of Michigan tell me that heroin is very easy to get up there now, even cheaper than oxycodone. I guess that’s to be expected, given the horrible economic situation up there. One...

On my favorite EMR forum, EMR Update, Matt Chase from Medtuity suggested the following pattern for how IT is involved in the EMR implementations he’s been involved in. Here’s what he said (emphasis added):
The characteristic pattern on a new server install is the IT guy comes in, puts the infrastructure in place, comes back in a couple of times over the ensuing 2 weeks and then disappears into the ether for a few years. Once a network is setup properly, it needs surprising little tuning. For example, a facility running Medtuity ~7 years is just now replacing their Windows 200/SQL Server 2000 box (a busy place too. They’ve had their IT people out no more than once per year, I’ll bet, over the last 7 years. Another group with 7 facilities does not even have an IT pers...

hiya– Wondering if you could tell me if this is a good idea. I’m almost at the end of my taper from methadone from having addiction to oxycontin. been on methadone coming up on 2 years and I’m taking 8 mg a day. and was thinking of asking my doctor to switch me over to Suboxone when i get down to 2 mg, use suboxone 2 or 3 months to help with the methadone withdrawal, and then taper off the Suboxone.
My doctor brought up Suboxone to me whe n i was at 30mg, but I didnt know anything about it, so I dismiised it. Now i hear its a better treatment. Any advice would be helpful. I want off methadone very bad, I’m just nervous about what comes at the end. I have to continue working– cant take much time off ...

Reckitt-Benckiser, the first (but surely not last) manufacturer of orally dissolvable buprenorphine sold under the brand names Suboxone and Subutex, has been aggressively pushing doctors to refer addicts taking buprenorphine into a program called ‘Here to Help’ that they promote as something that will keep patients compliant with buprenorphine maintenance. Regular readers of STZ know that I have not been impressed by Reckitt-Benckiser over the years, and so I’m not going to just jump on the ‘here to help’ bandwagon unless I see value in the program for my patients. I have referred SOME patients to the program, but the feedback I have received has not been positive. Patients have told me that they receive confusing or conflicting information, or that ...

On Tuesday I hosted a Book Forum for Tom Palmer’s new book, Realizing Freedom: Libertarian Theory, History, and Practice. You can see the video here. I thought Tyler Cowen’s comments were very astute, so I reproduce an abridged version here:
The first question is, “What do I, as a reader, see as the essential unity or unities in the book?” And I see really two. The first is I see this as a construction and articulation of a vision of what I call reasonable libertarianism. I think we’re in a world right now that is growing very partisan and very rabid, and a lot of things which are called libertarian in the Libertarian Party, or what you might call the Lew Rockwell / Ron Paul camp, are to my eye not exactly where libertarianism should be, and I think Tom has been a very br...

George Will and Drug Decriminalization

George Will’s latest column takes a look a drug policy and the views of the new drug czar, Gil Kerlikowski. Notably, Will mentions Portugal’s experience with decriminalization of all drugs since 2001 and says Kerlikowski is aware of the Portuguese policy as well. Cato published a report on Portugal’s drug policy in April and the author, Glenn Greenwald, discussed his findings at a Cato policy forum here. George Will’s shifting views on drug policy (toward liberalization) reflect the shifting views of other conservative pundits and the public more generally.
Will appeared on ABC on Sunday, and discussed his views on drug policy. Watch:

The Real Story Behind the Chrysler Bankruptcy

If you worry about the abuse of executive power and declining respect among elected officials for the rule of law, you should watch this eloquent illumination of what really went down in the Chrysler bankruptcy earlier this year. The speaker is Richard Mourdock, Treasurer of the state of Indiana. The setting is a Cato Institute policy forum on October 15 about the “sordid details of the Bush/Obama auto industry intervention.”
As state treasurer, Mourdock is the person responsible for investment decisions concerning Indiana’s state employee pension funds, some of which owned a small share of Chrysler’s $6.9 billion in secured debt and some of which opposed the administration’s offer of $.29 on the dollar for that debt. Though these small secured holders were publicly casti...

I may be fanning the flames of rumor, but it was posted on Subox Forum today that generic Subutex (essentially a sublingual buprenorphine tablet) will be available tomorrow at a price of around $2.40 per tablet. Not the cheapest drug, but a drop in price of over 50%– which would come as great relief to many people.

A year or so ago I wrote an article about the relationship between Suboxone maintenance and traditional recovery. The article has been reprinted in several forms with minor changes from one copy to the next, but the general points are repeated here. I have received occasional comments from people who agree with me and from people who disagree, and from people who hate Suboxone and people who say that Suboxone saved their lives.
I received a thoughtful e-mail the other day that deserves re-posting to a broader audience. For those who are interested in the relationships between addiction and character defects, and the impact of buprenorphine or the twelve steps on these character defects, I suggest that you first read the original article, and then read the e-mail response printed be...

Thank you to some astute folks at the Suboxone Forum who recently provided information about a possible generic competitor to Suboxone. One contributor provided this interesting story about the profit potential from Suboxone for Reckitt-Benckiser and the considerations for the development of a generic product. Another person mentioned the news from the FDA site on October 9 that announced the approval of generic buprenorphine tablets by Roxane Pharmaceuticals. The Bloomberg article mentions a new thin film delivery vehicle for buprenorphine under development by RB, claiming that the strip will deliver the medication more rapidly than the dissolving tablet. Again, those of you who have read this blog or who are part of the forum already know the way that I recommend people tak...

‘Seven years’ refers to a scrape over on SuboxForum.com with a moderately disturbed woman from Roselle, Illinois… Those of you who haven’t visited are really missing some good action! We also have a new ‘Q and A’ section that I think will be a hit. Please visit and register, but more than that, WRITE! People on Suboxone need to talk to each other so that they don’t feel like isolated members of an ’underclass’. I tell you– there are more people on Suboxone than you would ever imagine. I can’t remember the exact number, but somewhere around 500,000 people have been treated in the past few years (7 years if you believe our crazy lady from Roselle!). So let’s talk… as you will read below, the stakes a...

I spend some time on this post at the forum so I will share it here as well. First, a post from a person who uses the name ‘Suboxone7yrs’:
I was addicted to vicodin for 10 years popping 50 pills a day of Vicodin ES or NORCO, I then decided enough is enough, went to the ER and they gave me a list of doctors who deal with addiction. I went to see this female doctor who gave me the 3 hour consultation thing, then put me on 32mg of SUBOXONE, she sold me the suboxone out of her office for $5 per pill, rather then paying $8 a pill at a Walgreens I thought ok why not?…Well 5 years later this doctor STILL had me on 32mg of SUBOXONE! She then must have gotten caught because she was no longer in practice, so I found another doctor who was commited to getting me off, it took 2 yea...

An e-mail:
I’m stuck in methadone-land, no one will write long term for Suboxone. I feel trapped and utterly helpless. I’ve been on methadone for a year and a half, and just see no real end in sight. I am tired all the time, and my friend said that he got on Suboxone and it changed his life. I’ve been reading about it and trying to find someone in my city to do it but they all only do 90 day detox programs. What if anything can I do? I’m out of options short of driving several hours to doctors in other big cities. I’m in Wichita Ks and the next closest is OKC or KC.
My reply:
I assume you have tried the physician-finder web sites; in case you haven’t, one is here at Suboxone.com, and the other here at naabt.com. If you haven’t inves...

There is a new review of Brian Doherty’s book, Gun Control on Trial: Inside the Supreme Court Battle over the Second Amendment, over at The American Spectator.
The review captures the uphill battle that the Heller litigants faced in the District of Columbia:
When an employee on the Taxicab Commission once suggested that taxicab drivers be able to arm themselves for self- defense, a spokesman for then mayor Anthony Williams said, “The proposal is nutty, and obviously, it would not be entertained seriously by any thinking person.” After D.C. readjusted its laws in the wake of Heller so that guns were no longer prohibited but regulated to the point of making ownership exceedingly difficult, Mayor Adrian Fenty justified it thusly: “I don’t think [the people of D.C...

Sciscoop.com - the Science News Forum - was relaunched in on May 1. I gave the site a seriously long overdue makeover, re-themed the site, switched to new web hosting, and rebuilt everything from the ground up with the amazing technical assistance of my friend Ariel to make the most of advances in web content management systems.
The archive of well over 3000 articles contributed by more than 4300 members from first launch in November 2002 to April 2009 is now much better organized and accessible to keen researchers and casual browsers alike. I’ve also upgraded the search system, so that results are pooled from the archives of SciScoop and sibling site Sciencebase using Google site search, moreover, I’ve used a fantastic Wordpress plugin called Broken Link Checker to…you g...

It is at the bottom of the page at suboxforum.com. I also want to thank those who signed up; over 30 new people in the past 24 hours!
One last thing… please don’t hesitate to share your knowledge. The best way to share is to emulate an NA or AA meeting, where one will give advice by describing his OWN experiences. For example instead of saying ‘you should…’ people say ‘I don’t know if this would work for you, but in my case I found that….’ A small distinction, but the sort of thing that makes others more receptive to your ideas.
Again, thanks everyone,
Jeff

About a year ago I started up a forum for people taking Suboxone; after an initial flurry of activity, things died down quite a bit and I assumed that the site was ‘dead’. The last time I checked in, there were about 90 registered users; not a bad number, but there had not been many recent posts. I just checked the place out, and was excited to see that the place has had a resurrection; there are over 300 registered users, and a number of active threads.
My reason for starting the forum was to make a place where people could discuss Suboxone openly without getting ‘flamed’ by the Suboxone-haters that have taken over many of the other message boards that deal with addiction. I ask that people who want to debate the nature of being ‘clean’ do s...

Speaking at a Cato forum Tuesday, Dr. Donald Abrams, director of Clinical Programs at the University of California Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, discussed the science behind medicinal marijuana, and explained why the drug should be allowed for patients who suffer from a variety of symptoms.
After the event, Abrams spoke with Caleb Brown for Wednesday’s Cato Daily Podcast, explaining the promise of marijuana as medicine:
One of the reasons I am in favor of people using the plant is because… we no longer have a health care system in the United States, we have a disease management system, and it is very expensive largely due to pharmaceuticals. If there is a plant that is a medicine that people can grow for themselves in their own backyard then I think we can really go a long...

Climate of Extremes
12:00 PM (Luncheon to Follow)
BOOK FORUM: Cato senior fellow in environmental studies Patrick J. Michaels will discuss his new book, Climate of Extremes: Global Warming Science They Don’t Want You to Know with David Legates, Delaware state climatologist and director of the Delaware Environmental Observing System.
The book illustrates the crucial unreported news about climate change: that changes in hurricanes will be small, that global warming is likely to be modest, and that contrary to daily headlines, there is no apocalypse on the horizon.
Free registration for this event is now open, and it will be simulcast live on Cato’s Web site.

I’m sorry to report that the first day of the two-day Diabetes Forum 2009 conference here in snowy Washington, DC, was not very encouraging. Don’t get me wrong, the event was extremely well-organized, well-attended, and fascinating. It’s just that what we were hearing was a lot of bad news about the state of diabetes [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

If the headline didn’t tip you off: I’m in Washington DC, elated to be rubbing elbows with some of our nation’s most prominent diabetes advocacy groups, at the high-level Diabetes Forum 2009 Conference, this year titled “Broaden Your View.”

Women who experience the symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome have had a long journey. They often must contend with doctors who discount their symptoms or do not acknowledge an association with their tubal ligations. But if they do have appropriate medical evaluations, some will find that other conditions are causing their symptoms. At the end of this journey, those who remain without a specific medical diagnosis will indeed have Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

I’ve actually been for some time now toying with the idea of having a discussion forum for the Medical PDA community. While there are some PDA forums with medical subsections, there are very few dedicated ones for medical PDA users. My initial concerns:
- forums invite spammers. This is the bane of all forums and no matter what anti-spam measures one puts in, they still get through
- need for moderation. Otherwise objectionable posts may be made.
- it will suck up more bandwidth and disk space
However an open discussion forum will allow medical PDA users to share information and help one another. There are new platforms like the iPhone for instance and many users might be lost without some guidance. We can learn from each other. Hence, I decided to take the plunge and create a forum...

My brain is honoured to have been nominated to participate, together with the rest of my body of course, in a new initiative by the World Economic Forum.
The Global Agenda Councils have a fascinating charter:
- "Global Agenda Councils will challenge prevailing assumptions, monitor trends, map interrelationships and address knowledge gaps. Equally important, Global Agenda Councils will also propose solutions, devise strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of actions using measurable benchmarks."
- "In a global environment marked by short-term orientation and silo-thinking, Global Agenda Councils will foster interdisciplinary and long-range thinking to address the prevailing challenges on the global agenda."

Discussion Forum about whether the importance of embodiment is an essential obstacle to trying to simulate human cognition with computers. Meanwhile, the role of embodiment in cognition continues to be a growing area of research. I enjoyed a recent post on the Scientific American Community website entitled Thinking with the Body by Art Glenberg from Arizona State University. He reviews recent research by Holt and Bellock. The bottom line is that even when people are involved in verbal tasks, like reading sentences, their comprehension is influenced by their body knowledge of what is being described.

The PsyUSA network is the oldest and largest independent online network of clinical psychologists. But like many large social networks, it is a part of the “hidden Internet” because it is conducted exclusively through electronic mailing lists (or “listservs,” after a type of popular software that runs them). An electronic mailing list is a simple device that allows you to send an email to a large group of people transparently, and without having to type in everyone’s email address each time you want to email them. It’s sort of like a global email alias. Mailing lists tend to be topic-based, and you can choose to receive th...

Everyday, I read probably a half-dozen articles written on the topics of self-improvement, behavior, psychology, and other things that psychologists and other researchers spend entire careers studying and writing about. There’s nothing wrong with writing about these topics from your own personal perspective, or bringing your unique bent on an existing theory or what-not.
But I tire of the armchair psychologists, who think they have an answer for every deviant behavior.
So when Karoli, aka DrumsNWhistles, writes about the motivations and behaviors she observed after-the-fact in Matthew Murray, my warning bells start to sound. She discovered that Matthew Murray, the man who killed four people at a church and a missionary training center in Colorado earlier this month, was posting to ...

Several associations have accused the European Commission of supporting pharma companies in trying to make direct-to-consumer advertising for medicinal products legal. Four groups representing complementary health insurers, independent medical bulletins and patient advocates have issued a joint press release claiming: “The European Commission is supportive of the industry’s moves: its ‘consultations’ are little more than an attempt to sway public opinion.”
The press release was issued on Wednesday by the International Society of Drug Bulletins (ISDB), the Medicines in Europe Forum, Health Action International (HAI) and the Association internationale de la mutualité (AIM) and charge that the EC is trying to overlook the “underlying risks to health”...

My colleague Tim Gee and I are guest bloggers on the Get-Connected Forum at the Center for Connected Health. We speculate on:
What Will Microsoft’s HealthVault Mean to the Telehealth Community?
Our bottom line: HealthVault overall is a positive for telehealth industry growth and scale, even though it will speed the inevitable commoditization of remote patient monitoring (RPM) devices.

Her vehicle was a character portrait of Dr. Charles D.
Brian Klepper At one of the opening sessions of the Aspen Health Forum, Peter Agre and Michael Bishop, both physician researchers and Nobel laureates, recounted their childhoods, their families, their likes and dislikes, their school experiences, and the barriers, successes and lucky breaks that led them into lives of discovery. Dr. Agre won the award for identifying the mechanisms that allow water to cross the cell membrane. Dr. Bishop won for discovering how certain defects in genes can lead to cancer. Those of us in the audience were struck by the commonness and good humor of their stories, but also by these individuals’ profound humility and, most of all, their passion. What Neen Hunt, Director of the Lasker Foundation, the third speaker on that panel, in her description of ...

I'm sitting in Narita Airport waiting for my flight back to Seattle and reflecting on my experiences at the STS Forum in Kyoto and the meetings I had with customers in Tokyo.
Besides the opportunity to hear from Japan's new prime minister, I was thrilled to attend a luncheon presentation given by the Chairman of Toyota, Mr. Fujio Cho. Mr. Cho reviewed the history of Toyota and shared personal thoughts on Toyota's well known and highly regarded production methods. I am aware that many healthcare organizations send executives to Japan to study with Toyota and take back home ideas on how to transfer some of that knowledge and relentless pursuit of perfection to patient care.

Anyone who has tried reading a drug label knows how difficult it is to understand. It is especially difficult for consumers and patients to understand and evaluate the potential risks associated with the use of Rx drugs.A new study in the September 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine found multiple problems with drug labels. The authors suggest that one way to improve readability and patient understanding of labels is for FDA to initiate a national standard for their format and content -- much like it did with the "Nutrition Facts" labels required on food packaging. In fact, the FDA recently invited food companies, trade groups, watchdog organizations, medical experts and its overseas counterparts to share how front-label symbols, like the "traffic light" system used in Britain, c...

Sorry we’ve been down for the last couple of days but our hosting company (AN Hosting) was having a hardware problem. Fortunately, with a lot of hard work on their end they were able to get everything back to normal. The break gave us a little time to catch up on our backlog of questions so some of you got a personal email from one of the Beauty Brains.
Regular posts will resume today or tomorrow.
In the meantime, feel free to check out what’s happening on the Beauty Brains Forum. There’s a discussion about Lindsay Lohan that’s cracking me up. (Source: thebeautybrains.com)

Former Senator Mike Gravel Invited to HRC/LOGO LGBTQ Presidential Forum

The Human Rights Campaign and LOGO Channel have reconsidered their position on allowing former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel to participate in their televised Presidential forum on LGBTQ issues after a groundswell of response from the blogging community. In this announcement from HRC, we learn that Sen. Gravel is now welcome to join the debate and that the forum has been extended from an hour to 90 minutes to allow more time for all candidates.Congratulations to the grassroots efforts from blogs such as Queerty.com and others for reporting on this topic and for turning around an exclusionary financial criterion for participation in shaping candidates' views of the LGBTQ community.Categories: HRC LOGO+Channel Human+Rights+Campaign Presidential+forum LGBTQ politics (Source: 2sides2ron)

By way of a reminder, the Methuselah Foundation recently set up a forum accessible to the public; if you'd like to hobnob with the researchers and volunteers presently working on Foundation science projects, or discuss the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence and other directions for near-future longevity research, then this is the place to be.

See, for example, a posted overview of the MitoSENS project, and thoughts on RAGES and bioremediation:

When trying to bioremediate AGE crosslinks from aged tissues, a major concern would be that the crosslink might be buried by the protein fibers it crosslinks, so that the bioremediation enzymes might be unable to access it. The Global Changing Diabetes Leadership Forum held in New York City was hosted by Novo Nordisk and supported by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Yes, when people of this magnitude get together - you know it's serious business!
The forum convened the Masters of the Healthcare Universe to discuss ways to make diabetes a global health priority and ultimately, improve the way the disease is treated. The attendees were policymakers, patient organizations and healthcare professionals. It is estimated that 1 in 3 American children born in 2000 and beyond w...
