Baby Boomers 2011: A “New Frontier” With Few Guideposts

This is a guest post by Dr. John Schumann.

In 2011, the first wave of baby boomers will turn 65 years old. Sixty-five still has currency because that’s the age at which non-disabled Americans are eligible to be covered under the Medicare program (now itself having reached middle age).
As our economy continues to recover (hopefully) from the Great Recession, the entrance of millions of Americans to the Medicare rolls over the next decade and a half will be a formidable planning challenge. Look at this chart to see how the baby boomers population has surged:

So is the promise of healthcare reform (the “PPACA“), which will enlarge Medicaid by an additional 16 million Americans — about half of the projected growth in coverage for those currently uninsured....

Glaxo Gives Up On Its Fountain Of Youth Pill

And so, $720 million later, GlaxoSmithKline has finally discontinued work SRT501, a drug designed to mimic the ant-aging benefits of red wine, saying the compound did not work sufficiently in advanced multiple myeloma patients and caused kidney damage. This is not terribly surprising, given that a clinical trial was halted last spring for ‘unexpected safety events’ (see here).
The discontinuation is a bit of an embarassment for Glaxo. Earlier this year, there was quite a flap over the value of the Sirtris compound. Sirtris, you may recall, made a name for itself by developing drugs that activate sirtuins, a class of enzymes involved in aging, and its most advanced compound was a formulation of resveratrol, a substance found in red wine and plants. Lured by the fountain of yout...

Fountain sodapop is one of my favorite things. Lots of ice, unlimited refills, and I'm a happy guy.Until recently I didn't know how those machines worked behind the scenes. I had visions of lots of tubes and hoses running for miles and miles behind the counter. You know what -- that's not too far off.Last week I had lunch at a little shop near the YMCA where I play basketball. Partway through lunch I thought that something about the Diet Pepsi just didn't taste right. Fountain soda is a funny thing. Sometimes the mix can be a little "off" and it's not good. But was it just a little "off", or was it regular Pepsi I was tasting? I just couldn't tell! The shop was quiet and I have gotten to know the owner, so I asked her about it. She taste...

Getting a Gulp of Bacteria in that Soda Fountain Drink?

Is Fountain Soda Safe?
A new study published in the January issue of the International Journal of Microbiology is giving people cause to be concerned about what else they may be getting in their soda fountain drinks.
Coliform bacteria, the bacteria used to determine the quality of foods and beverages, were detected in 48% of the beverages analyzed in a 2009 study.
The study, conducted by researchers at Hollins University and Virginia Western Community College, found that “soda fountain machines may harbor persistent communities of potentially pathogenic microorganisms.”
In addition, the concern is that these microorganisms in the soda “may contribute to episodic gastric distress in the general population and could pose a more significant health risk to immunocompromised...

4-year-old wanders and is found in fountain

Keith Kennedy was found last Sunday night. Another story of an autistic individual wandering, and into water: A 4-year-old boy, Derek Casanova-Gonzalez, was found unconscious in an outdoor fountain in Clayton, North Carolina, and is now in the hospital. The News-Observer reports that his parents were cleaning a nearby early childhood center and realized that he was missing; on searching, they found him in the unconscious in the fountain.
Hoping Derek is ok.

Are You A Cautious Diabetic While Dining Out?

In my very honest opinion, I think the best option when a diabetic goes out to eat is to order the good ol’ salad bar! That’s right. Now, you can’t pile salad on half of your plate and then pasta salad, potato salad, Jello salad and other high sugar and carb no no’s, but you can certainly eat all the greens and veggies with a crouton or two.
We took the kids to lunch today and this would be just what I ordered at Ruby Tuesday’s. The salad bar! And it was very yummy. I ate my big ol’ plate of salad and gulped on a diet coke. I love fountain soda and have been limiting my intake of diet coke since all the studies on how it affects diabetics. But boy, one once in a while… yummmy! And give me some credit, it isn’t cheesecake! Haha.
What do you us...
