Expanding the Healthy Patient – Doctor Relationship

Patient Doctor Relationship
It seems like this topic keeps coming up in my online and social media reading. Basically, the discussion usually centers around the role the patient plays in healthcare. Many people like to discuss what has been called the ePatient. I instead want to talk about the motivations of patients and their ability to influence the healthcare system.
Patients in healthcare are unlike “customers” in many other industries. I can’t think of a single patient that wants to go and see a doctor. Ok, maybe they like the doctor and they want to get whatever’s ailing them fixed, but to a person I’m sure we’d say that going to the doctor is the last place we want to be. It’s not like going shopping for a new pair of shoes. There’s no...

I was going to officially launch my new Healthcare IT blog network today, but got a little bit busy. Plus, it’s Friday, so I think I’ll wait until next week or after HIMSS to officially launch it. It’s going to be really cool and bring out some interesting independent voices in Healthcare IT.
Until then, if you want to see the latest news coming out of HIMSS, you should head over to our recently launched EMR and Healthcare IT news site. It’s been hopping and with my wife’s help it will stay well updated during and after HIMSS with the latest news.
Also, I came across the idea of using Foursquare at HIMSS. I thought that sounded like a good way to start using Foursquare. Plus, then more people will be able to find me in order to win a Free HD TV at HIMSS. So, i...

I was browsing locations on foursquare and the local hospital’s psych unit showed up as the ‘Acorn Palace – Borderline Hell’. Should I be offended or amused? As some people know I have just started using Foursqure – a way you can check into physical locations on the internet to let your friends know where [...] (Source: AspieWeb.net)

Game Dynamics & Geo Location – Will HIPAA Kill It?

As a result of bringing location-based social networking to the masses, Facebook Places will also bring us game dynamics. This will have huge implications for local businesses, including hospitals, medical practices and other healthcare providers. Let’s look at the implications and opportunities that the adoption of this technology will have for medical providers.

What are game dynamics?
If you’ve got 10 minutes, you may want to watch the highly distributed TED video “The Game Layer on Top of the World” (scroll to the bottom of this article for the video). In short, it’s just a fancy name for a range of incentives that reward desired behavior. We’ve had game dynamics in the “real world” for a long time, but it has recently been taken to ...

Why Facebook Places is going to be a big deal for the healthcare industry

What is Facebook Places?
Let’s start with the basics. Facebook Places is basically a mobile app feature that allows you to share where you are located and see where your friends are physically located. You can choose to “check in” virtually with Facebook Places when you visit your local coffee shop or your local dentist, immediately communicating to your friends where you are. After checking in, you can leave a comment and see others that have checked in at that same place.
Privacy restrictions will limit who will see your comments and check ins.
For now only Facebook for iPhone and mobile phones capable of viewing HTML5 webpages can use Facebook Places.
