If you’re anything like me, you like to try products before you buy. This is especially important within the context of your dental practice. You want to know that the products you use on a regular basis are of high quality and safe for your patients, right? Beyond that, it’s just plain fun to play with new products, especially when they’re free! For these reasons I put together a list of five websites where you can request free dental product samples – available only to dental professionals.

You may remember a few weeks back that I reviewed Dr. Collins interdental cleaners. Well, for those of you who don’t know, interdental cleaners are essentially tiny brush-like “sticks” if you will, used to clean plaque and food particles out of the spaces between your teeth. They’re a great supplement to dental floss, and can break up the monotony of flossing everyday.

Flix Sticks - Dental Floss & Interdental Cleaner Combined
I’ve been thinking lately that there must be a way to incorporate the benefits of both interdental cleaners and floss into a single product. Well, it turns out, a company by the name of Mirage Dental Products Limited beat me to the punch. They produce a hybrid interdental cleaner and floss product dubbed “Flix Sticks”. Cool name, huh? What makes t...

Dr. Carlat Says Goodbye to Drug Reps

Due to the bullying approach of some Astra-Zeneca drug sales representatives, Dr. Daniel Carlat has decided to call it quits in seeing any more such reps. Pushing Seroquel for depression in bipolar disorder, the sales rep and his district manager tried a hard sell sales tactic, which, of course, backfired.
It is astounding to me that there are still sales reps out there who don’t know who, exactly, they are dealing with and didn’t spend the 2 minutes Googling the next doc on their appointed rounds. Such a simple search would’ve shown Dr. Carlat’s stance on drug reps in general, and suggested an approach 180 degrees than the one taken.
Now, because of their embarrassing fumble, they’ve turned off Dr. Carlat from even seeing any drug reps in the future. How ma...

Free Sample Medication May Cost Patients More in Long Run

A new study by found that patients who received free drug samples had significantly higher prescription drug expenses that patients who did not receive samples. The study found that patients who received free samples spent $166 in the six months prior to receiving the samples, $244 in the six months they received the samples and $212 in the six months following. Patients not receiving samples spent only $178 on prescription medication of six months. "This is a curious finding because one would think, intuitively, that if you receive a free sample, one's out-of-pocket prescription cost would be lower, not higher," said lead researcher Dr. G. Caleb Alexander, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Alexander believes there are several exp...
