As you begin studying the structure and function of the human body, you'll find that you need to be thoroughly familiar with the terminology used in anatomy to describe directions and orientation. It may seem overwhelming at first, but it's a necessary step in learning everything else in anatomy. It's like knowing north from south and east from west when beginning a course in geography.Extra time and effort spent to learn anatomical directions and orientation at the beginning of the course will make most of the next semester or two . . . and beyond into other courses and your career . . . go way more smoothly. Really. It's hard to see that now, I know. But trust me! Besides your learning in the lab and lecture course, and working through your textbook and lab manual,...

I was talking with a Life Coaching client yesterday about some tasks we had put in place the previous week. On the whole he had nailed them and done a fantastic job of being 100% committed. Except that is for one thing. Of five things he committed to do, sadly, one remained unfinished. Whereas he wasn’t about to slash his wrists in annoyance, he was a little disappointed in himself and looked extremely sheepish. Continue reading...
In several previous articles, I mentioned that the first step in learning the concepts of anatomy and physiology successfully is to learn the language. You need to master the terminology before you can begin to understand the ideas. And in many of those previous articles, I pointed out that learning new terms--even a huge number of new terms--can be fast and easy if you simply practice, practice, practice. Every day. Several times a day. But just a few minutes at a time. And an easy way to practice is using flashcards. Flashcards can be either traditional paper 3"x5" index cards or any of the many computer-based variations of the flashcard technique.Recently, a reader of this blog recommended another of the web-based varieties of flashcards. It's called Wo...

Understanding anatomy and physiology often begins with building a foundation of basic terminology and identification of structures by name and location. Yikes, that means memorization. A lot of folks dread memorization tasks because they simply don't know how to do it in a quick, pain-free manner. Once you know the tricks of memorization, it's not that bad.The essential trick is to practice, practice, practice. That means every day, several times a day, if possible. However, this will only work if you spend just a few minutes at a time practicing. If you try to get in all in one long session, it won't work . . . or at least least is won't work very well. In fact, the "long session approach" can sometimes burn you out so badly, it'll be hard to make yourself...

In a previous post I outlined some of the benefits of using concept maps. Also known as mind maps, they are simply charts that sketch out how you understand a particular concept. This helps you map out for yourself how the pieces of a complex topic relate to one another . . .and perhaps also how they relate to other concepts. You've seen concept maps before. They are scattered throughout your A&P textbook. They can take the form of flow charts, tables, circle diagrams, sketches, and so on. When you make your own concept map, you help yourself to learn how it all fits together. If you struggle with putting together a concept map, that's great! That means that you've identified a specific hole in your understanding. You can't complete a concept map...

I don't think I've ever met a person who could identify tissues of the body on sight on their first day of trying. And yet many A&P students get frustrated just because they can't "get it" after only one day of trying. Identifying tissue types by sight is difficult for everyone, at first—for several reasons.First, each example is unique. No two examples look exactly alike, just like no two fingerprints look exactly alike. So you have to learn to look for patterns. And you can't do that until you've looked at a lot of examples. And that takes time—and a lot of practice.Second, not all examples are stained in exactly the same way. Even when the same general type of staining is used, a lot depends on the quality of the sample, the quality of the stain used, and how well the prepa...

I finally mad it to one of thos look better feel better or whatever they are called groups. Actually I think I already look and feel better but free make-up was involved, so I went. Pretty good free make-up, too. So anyway, I was sitting next to an old lady, whose name was not barbara, however three other women by that name were in the (relatively small) class. Apparently, being named Barbara causes cancer. Anyway this non-Barbara woman was sort of depressed, and although I rarely make such observations, pretty funny looking. We talked because we both had newly-grown post-chemo hair, but she hated hers and wore an extremely unbecoming hat. She ...

It happened. Guilty. I confess. Reading about Dr. Berwick’s recess appointment to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) induced me to watch a Fox news clip. Gosh, I feel bad about it. It felt good, though.
Patients — that’s you and me — should know that CMS controls doctors, nurses and especially hospital/practice managers. They are ten times more scary than the radar patrol car on the highway.
Dr. Berwick likes the British system of healthcare delivery. In Europe healthcare is free, and everyone likes free stuff. Free stuff happens all the time, doesn’t it?
In Cambridge, Mass — at Harvard — free stuff for all seems a plausible tenet. There must be a lot of coffee shops and free time in Cambridge. In the real world — on Ma...

I recently came across a website where you can build your own body. It's called Anatomography and it's really fun.Using the online editor at Anatomography you start out with a complete skeleton. You can adjust the opacity (how transparent the bones are) or the color of your skeleton . . . or delete it if you like. Oh, and you can change the background color if you like. You then add organs from a library of pre-drawn organs. Any organs you like. Make each one a different color or perhaps color-code them by system. If you want to remove organs you've added, that's easy.At any point, you can rotate or tip your body to the desired perspective.
Well with a certain holiday coming up soon, it's probably a good time to share one of my favorite blogs with you . . . a crazy, wonderful blog called SKULL-A-DAY that you should visit. The project started out when this guy named Noah Scalin made a paper skull and posted it, then kept on making skulls in various media and in different forms every day for a year. Then folks just kept adding to it and, well, now it's a pretty big project. The one shown here is one of my favorites . . . a skull carved from a watermelon! There's even a book version now! The book is called SKULLS of course. As many of you A&P students are skull fans by now, or ought to be, I thought you might like to see all those skulls. For Facebook users, there's an application called Send-A-Skull that allows you to sen...

OK, you know you're supposed to "go over" your test or exam after its over. But HOW do you do that . . . WHY should you do that . . . and WHAT SHOULD YOU BE GETTING OUT OF IT?The reason you should do it is so that you can learn from your mistakes. Not only will you need those concepts you missed when you take the final exam, you'll need them to understand the rest of the course.Besides, you're going to have to identify and fix any problems with your test-taking skills. If you just casually scan your test, then you may not get much out of it. You need to take a more organized, focused approach. Here's a brief video running down how this works.Want a FREE sample Test Analysis Chart? More information on how to analyze your test? Then go to lionden.com/testreview.htm (Source: The A&P...

Mon.thly.Info is an online tool for menstrual cycle tracking which allows women to input notes about their cycle and view the resulting history and stats. This site could be really useful for young women who tend to have irregular cycles, other women who perhaps aren’t on oral contraceptives and could use help keeping track, and women who are monitoring when their fertile period might occur.
After a quick and simple registration process, users can enter the day they started their last period, along with their own notes about other days (such as PMS symptoms or other information-whatever you’d like). It’s also apparently possible to enter basal body temperature information, which may be useful for women attempting to date their ovulation in order to try to conceive or avo...

Jane is a foreign language professor and her students use it to learn their vocabulary words. It's called Anki and it's a FREE program that creates a database that is something like a virtual deck of flash cards. Students can load in (and share) their A&P terms and learn them by practicing with them. The program is SMART because it uses a proven algorithm to repeat items that are missed in a pattern that promotes efficient learning. As the student learns, the program alters the pattern to focus on the terms that need more practice . . . without forgetting to re...

New Tutorial on Evidence-Based Medicine

Yesterday at Our Bodies Our Blog, I linked to a free online workshop. on evidence-based medicine from the Consumers United for Evidence-based Healthcare (CUE). CUE is part of the US Cochrane Center, which my librarian/medical readers will recognize as affiliated with the Cochrane Collaboration - a producer of systematic reviews of medical evidence.
Anyway, I haven’t worked through the online tool yet, but it looks like it might be an interesting resource for teaching and learning EBM.

I love getting new cookbooks, don’t you? I especially like recipes that make my life easier. So that’s why I especially like this cookbook, 30 Minutes or Less Favorite Foods. There are a lot of yummy recipes in here, and best of all the book has a lot of vivid pictures so you can see what each dish is supposed to look like.
I’ve got TWO of these wonderful books to give away to two lucky readers here. To enter to win, leave a comment on this post by Monday, January 5th. I’ll choose two winners at random and announce them the next day. Good luck!

Here in Nashville, I think my “I Voted!” reward options are Krispy Kreme and Ben & Jerry’s, but if you live in New York or Seattle, Babeland wants to give you a free sex toy in their Get Out the Vote giveaway.
Don’t worry if you’re stuck in line to vote all night - Babeland says:
Stop by any brick and mortar store (New York or Seattle) between November 4th and 11th and bring your voter registration card, voting stub or word of honor. If you voted, we’ll give you a Silver Bullet or a Maverick Sleeve (get it?) for free! Yes, free.
Of course, if you live in one of these cities but don’t need an extra bullet or sleeve, you could always get one anyway and send it to a friend as a gift.

The spigot of free gifts, travel and other give aways to doctors, professors and students in the nation’s 129 medical schools is about to be closed. Gosh, I don’t know how they’ll manage…
The New York Times brings us the story today:

Drug and medical device companies should be banned from offering free food, gifts, travel and ghost-writing services to doctors, staff members and students in all 129 of the nation’s medical colleges, an influential college association has concluded.
The proposed ban is the result of a two-year effort by the group, the Association of American Medical Colleges, to create a model policy governing interactions between the schools and industry. While schools can ignore the association’s advice, most follow its recommendation...

Thursday, March 13, 6:00 pm - Free lecture by David Haig, Maternal-Fetal Conflicts in Human Pregnancy
Harvard Museum of Natural History
24 Oxford Street in the Geological Lecture Hall
http://www.hmnh.harvard.edu/lectures_and_special_events/index.php
Pregnancy is the most intimate of human relationships and, just like any other relationship, there is potential for both cooperation and conflict. In this lecture, Dr. Haig, Professor of Biology at Harvard, will discuss the various genetic conflicts that transpire within the human womb, and visit the assumption that what’s good for the mother is also good for the fetus. Haig will consider evolutionary conflicts over the amount of maternal blood flowing to the placenta, and use this perspective to consider the causes of preeclampsia.

I only have 40 GB hard disk space, partitioned into 2. I have separate drive for all my important documents with my almost 4000 collection of music, the other drive is for my system files so every time I need reformatting of my PC, I won’t be having a problem of backing up my files. Because I have a limited disk space, I tried many ways to save up for space so my PC performance would not be affected without the need to upgrade my RAM or disk space.
Upgrading could be the best option because you wouldn’t have to spend longer time deleting every unnecessary files you could find in your computer. But if your saving up for some more important things, it may be an impractical option.
Alternatively, you can:
1. Clean up your hard disk

Wellcome Images is a fascinating collection of contemporary and historical images from medicine and social history - it includes a Biomedical Collection, which “holds over 40,000 high-quality images from the clinical and biomedical sciences. Selected from the UK’s leading teaching hospitals and research institutions, it covers disease, surgery, general healthcare, sciences from genetics to neuroscience including the full range of imaging techniques.”
Even better, Wellcome has made the images freely available for non-commercial use under a pair of Creative Commons licenses. It also appears that they’re planning a bit of 2.0 by allowing comments on the images in the near future.

In case you missed it earlier this week, Publix super markets with pharmacies will now fill prescriptions for 7 common antibiotics free of charge. You still have to have a prescription, but can fill it for free regardless of your insurance status/provider.
The list of antibiotics is as follows:
-Amoxicillin
-Cephalexin
-Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)
-Ciprofloxacin (excluding ciprofloxacin XR)
-Penicillin VK
-Ampicillin
-Erythromycin (excluding Ery-Tab).
This locator tool allows you to search for the nearest Publix, and you can check a box to search only for those locations with a pharmacy. Free antibiotics with prescription is a good deal - for pete’s sake, though, use ‘em responsibly. (Source: Women's Health News)
