So, it turns out that the more you do stuff, the better you getat the stuff that you’re doing. Who knew? (Well, quite a lot of people, I guess. See the Carneigie Hall joke and ‘The more I practice, the luckier I get’, etc.)
My first attempts at spinning were knotty and rough, but gradually, they’ve got better.
I’ve been able to spin things that look like yarn in the end, but are too over-twisted to be any practical use.

Then I’ve been able to spin yarn I can knit with.

My Dad is the lucky recipient of my first homespun-knitted hat.

Yes, he looks like a burglar. (He doesn’t usually.) No, it’s not long enough.
But it will keep him warm, and he and my Mum have agreed that he can wear it under a hood or in the dark. Which is about right, I t...

I’ve been working away this week, which has meant a lot of time in airports, on planes, in taxis, and generally hanging about. I don’t usually mind – there’s not really a bigger favour you can do for a knitter and reader than ask her to stick around in a place with seats and snacks and coffee for a couple of hours – but by 5.30pm yesterday, exactly 72 hours since the week’s travelling had begun, I was done with anything that needed me to do serious looking and thinking and keeping things in order in my head. My eyes were scratchy and tired. Actually, all of me was scratchy and tired. And it was still three hours until my flight took off, five hours until I’d be home.
I was in Heathrow Terminal 5, which is busy busy busy, so I sat and I watched the ...

Today is Lauren’s birthday and so her Fill in the Blank Friday, which is kinda perfect, because my birthday was last Saturday! Yay for Leo birthdays!

My most favorite birthday was both my 25th and 26th birthday parties. Lots of friends and Erik, dinner (or this year, dessert) out in NYC. Very fun!
My worst birthday was my 17th. I didn’t plan a party and none of my friends were around on my birthday, which, being in the summer, was typically during a lot of vacations. It sucked. I remember crying.
My favorite birthday memory is celebrating my 18th birthday in Paris with my mom. We didn’t actually do anything particularly special that day (my birthday dinner was Chinese food in the Louvre food court) but just being there was pretty awesome.
The best birthday present I&#82...

Remember this post, about how we shouldn’t let minor disagreements turn into major things? About how we should resolve things while we can?

Well, here’s a bit of supporting evidence.

That’s me and that’s Rachel Skye, reunited after eight years of not being in touch.

We were just like we always were, with the added determination to make [...] (Source: Bah! to cancer)

So, the cold isn’t being too coldy -it’s just a minor irritation, not a take-to-the-sofa job, which is good.
I’ll tell you what is irritating though. I have a spot coming on my chin. I can feel it and it’s going to be HUGE. You know when you have that ache and you know that you’re doomed to walk around with a prominently-displayed red mound with a flashing white beacon of a head on it for days? That.
What’s really annoying is that when I look in the mirror, I see the place where the spot is growing, waiting to burst forth…. and I also see wrinkles. This is just wrong. Surely when you are old enough to have wrinkles, you should no longer be eligible for spots?
I think there should be rules about these things. Laws, even. Wouldn’t life be just ...

I finished the second Bah! book towards the end of July, and I gave myself a month off before going to the next book. (I’ve yet to decide what the next book will be. Or rather, which of the books will be next. I have two begun novels and a not-at-all-begun not-about-cancer Bah! book jostling for position in my brain right now.)
The month off was partly to give myself a break and partly a question of expediency: holidays are upon us, and we are either away, or have guests, or I am doing bits of actual work that require me to be in a particular place for a particular period of time, and pay attention while I’m there.
But I am missing writing. Well, obviously I’m still writing, because I blog most days, but I miss Writing Books. I think it’s because writing books is th...

My favorite color is purple, in case you can’t tell.
My travel destination of choice is an historic city, preferably in Europe.
My favorite food is popcorn. I would eat it every day if I could. One of my favorite things we got for our wedding was an air-pop popcorn maker! And yes, we did register for it. And by we, I mean I registered for it.
My happy place is wherever my husband is. Oh go on, you know you want to: Awwww.
My favorite saying is “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” It’s the inspiration for the title of this blog and it has basically become my life’s motto.

One of my happiest moments ever was the day Erik proposed to me. It might seem strange not to pick our wedding day, but the wedding was stressful and a little nerve-wracking and even during the ceremony I was thinking “I hope I know what I’m doing and that I don’t mess anything up!” But the day Erik and I got engaged, we decided to wait to tell anyone. We went to the High Line park and then we had dinner at our favorite restaurant, One If By Land, Two If By Sea, which is so cozy and romantic. It was just us the whole day and it was wonderful.
Summer is wedding season and weddings are lovely and wonderful but man oh man I never want to plan one ever again! Bring on the invitations though. I love going to weddings!

For your delight and delectation, some websites worth having a peek at.
I was horribly fascinated by these pictures from China’s bee-wearing contest. Yes, bee-wearing. (Maybe don’t look if you don’t like bees.)
One of my favourite birthday presents, my seashell necklace and earrings, was from The Silvery, who take all sorts of natural things and cover them in silver. Take a look here.
Or if that’s not to your taste, another favourite was a brooch made from an antique spoon (yes, really) by The Hairy Growler.
Alan has introduced me to RSA Animations – here’s one on what drives us. it’s business-orientated but I think is just as relevant to life outside work.
And, I’m not sure whether they would let me in, what with the Blue Sky Club and ever...

I’ve been working in Germany this week, and one thing I’ve noticed about being abroad – particularly on your own – is that you have to pay attention. You have to pay attention to the traffic, because it comes from places that you wouldn’t normally expect. You have to pay attention to the way that you speak, because if you don’t, someone brings you an iron and an ironing board when you wanted them to collect your laundry, and you feel bad for having made them lug them all the way to your room, only for them to lug it back to where it came from without so much as a nice crisp seam being achieved. You have to pay attention to the different names of familiar products, or you’ll never get a Diet Coke, but you will get a Coke Light. I am definitely more ...

Recently I was asked to provide a photgraph of Alan and I for an event. Easy, I thought, so I started going back through the photos on my computer.
And there are lots of pictures of me. I’m showing off knitting, showing off hair, showing off scars and new bras, standing or sitting in nice places…. generally showing off, actually.
And there are lots of pictures of Alan. Quite often holding a beer, or wearing a hat, or just looking nice and relaxed. (He’s much better at having his photo taken than I am.)
But pictures of both of us, in which we both agree that we both look neither too mad nor too multi-chinned? Few and far between. In fact, we had to go back to a wood near the Welsh border and one of those self-taken pics before we were happy with a photo choice. August 2010...

I had a good cry yesterday afternoon. It was because, driving back from shopping for my birthday party tomorrow, I remembered that there have been a few times over the last couple of years – only a handful, but even so – when I have seriously wondered whether I would make it to 40. When 40 seemed like the top of an unfeasibly high mountain that I needed to climb – and I very definitely wasn’t wearing the right shoes.
Today, though, 40 feels like another beginning. The beginning of a decade I intend to sail through, happy, healthy, and well, enjoying life and appreciating all that I am blessed with.
And I am so blessed.
I came down this morning to this.

Presents, from Ned, Alan, and Joy. Joy has taken the 40 thing very seriously….. and given me 40 presents.

Obviously, as I’m a trainer, I would say this, but learning – and sharing knowledge – is such a wonderful thing. I always enjoy the process of learning, whether it’s driving* or figuring out a new knitting technique. And something I’ve learned about learning is that you need to know when you can work it out for yourself, and when you need a bit of help.
I’ve been playing with my new spinning wheel, and loving it, but despite following all of the instructions, what I was making was very like what you’d get if you dipped a piece of string into a bucket of papier mache, whipped it out, and then left it to dry in a blizzard. Not pretty. Not even yarn, really. So I took my wheel along to craft group on Wednesday, where Sarah had offered to give me a les...

Cancer Free Friday – spinning

Last week, a box arrived.

This is what was in it.

After a couple of hours with Allan keys, screwdrivers, a hammer, candle wax, oil, Alan, my Dad, and a minimum amount of confusion, I had this.

An Ashford Traveller spinning wheel, bought from here.
Yes, my friends, I have decided that knitting isn’t enough. I need to spin too. Here is an aerial view of my first yarn, which is porridgey, over-spun in some places and under-spun in others….. but it’s a start.

Alan, Ned, Joy and I all agree that the spinning wheel is just another step on the road that leads, inevitably, to owning a sheep. (And a goat. And an alpaca. And an angora rabbit. And, probably, even a camel. Camel yarn is delicious. I haven’t told them about the camel yet.) (Source: Bah! to cancer)

Hosted by Lauren.

This weekend I’m hanging out with a friend and finishing some of our wedding planning before I leave for Oregon next week!
My last vacation was to Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend. We were there for a wedding.
My next vacation will be my honeymoon in Oregon! I promise to give more detail soon. Technically, I am going to Oregon next week, but that’s to finish wedding planning so it’s not much of a vacation, followed by a week in San Diego for business.
My favorite way to relax is going to the movies alone. I love sitting in a dark theater and not having to talk to anyone for two hours.
When vacationing one should always arrive with only one must-do item for every day you’re there. It anchors your day in something you want to do, so you don&#8...

Walking through the garden on the way to take Joy to school this morning, I said, ‘I need to think of something to write about for Cancer Free Friday today.’
By the gate, our 14 year old 3-legged moggie, Mr Whiskers, was getting in a bit of early morning sunbathing.

Joy said, ‘You should write about Mr. Whiskers’.
‘Yes,” I said, ‘I should’.
Mr. Whiskers was bought as a kitten by Jason (Ned and Joy’s Dad) and I, when Ned was 2, Joy was a baby, and we lived in an upstairs flat that had regular mouse visitors. So Whiskers was a creature of necessity: mousetraps/poison and toddlers didn’t seem like a brilliant combination, so we hoped that the smell of a cat might keep them away.
Ned chose Mr Whiskers from a cardboard box full of me...

The downside of moving, as well documented on this blog (particularly here) is that you end up carting a load of stuff you don’t need, and haven’t needed for years, around. But where there’s a down side, there’s an up side too, and the upside of the junkorama that is the aftermath of moving is that you also find treasures that you’ve forgotten about.
There was a time in early 2003 when I was unable to stop reading Fingersmith, and Alan was rediscovering his artistic talent.
Looking for paper for mind-mapping the new book recently, I unearthed the results of that unlikely artistic collaboration. I took them to be framed,

picked them up on Monday,

and they are going to grace our bedroom wall as soon as one of us remembers to take the hammer upstairs.

If I could get away somewhere for the weekend I would go to New England, because it’s beautiful and its close and I would bring my fiance.
Something I often rant about is the cost of things in New York City. This place is so friggin’ expensive. It takes awhile, but you eventually you stop batting an eye at spending $70 for a dinner for two. It just is what it is.
One item I need to have in my fridge at all time is string cheese. I currently have two unopened packs of string cheese. That’s how ridiculous my obsession is. I have a string cheese almost every day.
My “life-saving” product is insulin. Duh. OK, that’s a boring answer. My real life saving product is my iPhone. I really don’t know what I would do without it.

In just over a month, on the 1st of July, I will be 40 years old.
I have no problem with this. I don’t feel a mid-life crisis coming on. I have no plans to have a facelift, buy age-inappropriate clothing, take a lover, or throw everything over to go and live out my days in a beach hut on a desert island somewhere. (Or, indeed, do all four.)
I’m quite happy to be getting older, and I’m looking forward to celebrating.
The question is, how to celebrate on the blog?
I think I will think up a competition. Watch this space.
And also, I think it’s time for some guest bloggers. I’d like to invite you to write a guest blog post about a significant birthday. It doesn’t have to be numerically significant, just a birthday that sticks out in your mind. What was speci...

Wow! It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed any movies. It’s been my goal to review all the movies I watch for the 101 Things in 1,001 Days Challenge, but I haven’t actually watched that many movies. I guess I got burned out with my last round of 101 movies! Plus, February / March is usually a slow season in movies anyway. So far this year, I have reviewed 9 movies. Here are the next three!
Just as a reminder, this is how my grading breaks down:

{B} nice to watch
{C} watch if you have nothing else to watch or they just weren’t my cup of tea
{F} please don’t waste your time

My parents live in a mill that was built in the 1700s and converted into houses in the late twentieth century. It stands more or less alone in a beautiful spot, virtually silent, flanked by a river and a hill, a country road wending past. It’s exactly the sort of place that you drive past, think ‘how pretty!’ and never think about again. And, now that we’ve moved, it’s less than a ten minute drive away, which meant that on Tuesday, pretty much on a whim, I took Hope and had lunch with my Mum, and then we went for a walk, along the lonnen.* But I’m getting ahead of myself.
The building where my parents live has been, over the centuries, a foundry, a tweed mill, a firing range, and, during the second world war, a dye-works: up until that time dyes had comm...

It was tea time at Enlightenment Boulevard, and the members of the UCEM Council Executive were taking a well earned break. For a bit of light-hearted fun Professor Oliver Orvil Jeremiah Octavia Bristol suggested they all gather around his iPad to see what the latest creation from ZDoggMD and team had to offer. “What is [...] (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

Here are the results of my web explorations this last week. Time well spent, I think you’ll find.
How fab is this idea? Cupcakes in a cup! Excellent! (Though I don’t think they’ve done a terribly good job of the icing. And what do you have your accompanying tea out of? Hmmm, maybe I need to rethink my original reaction.)
I was fascinated by this article about a man who works on healing psychological damage. I think I’ll read his book, so you may hear more from me on this!
If you don’t like spiders don’t click this link, but if you do you’ll find pictures of some spectacular webs.
I enjoyed watching this short film about how smiling is contagious, presented by the very smiley David R. Hamilton.
What have you found on the interwebs this week? (Sourc...

Last night, Beloved Auntie Susan and I went to Alnwick Playhouse to see the London Concertante, guests of the Alnwick Music Society.
They were brilliant. We heard Mozart, Schubert, Rossini, Tchaikovsky and more, played with passion and heart. There were times when I realised I’d been holding my breath; others when, although I know it’s Terribly Bad Form and Just Not Done to applaud between movements, I wanted to do it anyway, because I could barely contain my appreciation and delight.
Driving home through the almost-dark, I was thinking that I must go to more classical music concerts, because I enjoy them so much. (Susan and I have agreed to abandon our jobs, lives and families in order to follow the London Concertante around the country, so no problem there.) And then I was th...

I know I said there wouldn’t be Cancer Free Friday today, but after I posted yesterday I remembered something and realised it was the perfect post for today.
A few weeks ago, I was staying with friends in London, and was on a bus into Wimbledon to meet Ned. It was mid-morning, so not overcrowded. and I sat downstairs, just behind the exit doors, near the buggy-and-wheelchair-park space.
A man got on the bus, with a toddler fast asleep in a buggy. The man was tall and fit-looking (not in the phwoaaar sense, just in the well-looked-after sense), with short hair and smiling eyes. I recognised him, instantly: he recognised me, and we exchanged ‘hello!’ grins before we’d even thought about it. And then spent the rest of the journey taking surreptitious glances to try to ...

My favorite daily responsibility is anything to do with DiabetesMine. I feel so lucky that I get to work on that website, so whether I’m reviewing a new product, interviewing someone about their amazing accomplishments or just spreading the word on our Facebook page and Twitter account, I always love my list of to-dos!
My least favorite daily responsibility is doing the dishes. When Erik and I first moved in together, I was the cook and he did the dishes. But I actually really don’t like cooking! So I made him do it, and I do the dishes. Which I also don’t like doing, but it’s slightly easier to put off than having to make a meal.
My favorite cuisine to eat when going out is Indian. We never make Indian food at home, so it’s one of the few things we go out for...

Cancer free Friday: looking up

It started last Sunday, which was a beautiful day. I looked up and there was a feather-cloud drifting across the sky.

The next day, the sky was less bright, but just as beautiful. All those lovely greys.

Since then, I’ve kept on looking up.

Looking at the sky reminds me how big the world is, and how small I am, but in a way that comforts and reassures me, rather than in a ’staring into the maw of the pointlessness of it all’ way.
I urge you to look up today. It only takes a second, and it might bring a whole new perspective to your day. (Source: Bah! to cancer)

Psychologist Paul Bindrim is known as the “father of Nude Psychotherapy,” and encouraged humans to draw together through activities like the one pictured above (left) at his Topanga Canyon therapy center. His unconventional methods included groups of people touching, massaging, and making prolonged eye contact in a warm pool together, and nearly got him kicked out of the American Psychological Association. He got considerable attention when, in 1971, he won a controversial lawsuit against author Gwen Davis, who he claimed painted his therapy methods in a bad light.
You’d think that nude therapy would be safely vaulted in the annals of psychology’s past, but it’s still alive! Sarah White (above, right), a 24-year-old graduate student, has dubbed herself the Nak...

Knitters frequently suffer from a complaint known as Startitis: you’re doing pretty well on a project, then you open a knitting magazine, go to Knit Night, or pop into your local yarn shop for a pack of stitch markers, and -wham! – before you know it you’re casting on something new and have abandoned your previous project in a heartbeat. We’re fickle like that.
Much rarer is Finishitis: the desire to finish everything that’s lying around waiting for you to fall out of love with your current project and get back to it. But I’m in the grip of it right now.
I think it was prompted by the fantastic feeling of achievement and satisfaction that I had on Monday when I emailed off the completed Bah! manuscript. I resolved to finish up all of my outstanding knitt...

How is (was) your April Fool Day (today)? Mine was really quiet. Only my youngest daughter (11) was fooled …. by her teacher. She has 2 teachers. Today (April 1st), one of them was to be replaced by another. When the class started, the main teacher came in and said: “Sorry guys, the new teacher [...] (Source: Laika's MedLibLog)

The topic of the #dsma chat this week was about carbs, which was a little ironic for me because I had just finished making cake pops with a friend. The dishes were actually still in the sink when I started to tweet. There are roughly a billion recipes for cake pops on the internet so I wont bore you with the details. Instead you can just enjoy the pictures. The cake pops are pretty easy to make; my only advice would be to wait for the "cake balls" to be completely chilled or you will have trouble getting them to stay on the lollipop stick.1. turning cake balls into cake pops, 2. candy melts for dipping, 3. chilling in fridge, 4. peanut butter cake pop, 5. with sprinkles, 6. blue cake pop with pearls, 7. cake pop dipping, 8. trying to cover evenly, 9. she loves pictures, 10. posing while wai...

This week, I’ve been working in London, training thinking skills. I stayed in Raynes Park, near my old home of Wimbledon, and I worked in places I’ve worked before, so it was all familiar territory.
Except it wasn’t. After seven months in our new Northumbrian home, I’m increasingly disorientated by the city. The lack of sky bothers me. So does the squash of people. One day, walking to the tube station, I forgot I was in London for a moment and said ‘good morning’ to someone walking in the opposite direction. Not only did she not respond, she looked terrified. I could see the words ‘I knew I should have put my stab vest on this morning’ flash across her features as I passed. (To be fair, though, the Ocado delivery man having a sneaky fag by th...

“It’s Friday, Friday! Gotta get down on Friday. Fun, fun, fun, fun. Looking forward to the weekend.” – Friday Music Video by Rebecca Black Dang those viral videos, but I have to admit that I’m grateful that today is Friday and I have a weekend to catch up on things. I’m sure that many of you can relate to this feeling.
As we head to the weekend, I’ll leave you with a little something to think about and discuss in the comments. Someone at HIMSS pointed this out to me and I thought it was worth sharing. Think about the patient interaction in the exam room. For some reason, doctors don’t and haven’t had any problem pulling out their mobile phone (or previously their PDA) in order to pull up Epocrates (or some other similar app) while in t...

Last week’s challenge seemed to go well – thank you to everyone who emailed me to tell me about it – so today, I’m going to offer you another task. I’m going to ask you to take a walk.
But not just any walk.
First, find five minutes. Ten, or even twenty, is better, but five will do. (Don’t tell me you don’t have five minutes. I bet you can shave five minutes off your email, Twitter or blog-browsing time without noticing…. just get to the end of this post first!)
Leave your iPod and your phone, and step outside. It doesn’t matter whether you’re standing in the middle of a grubby street, a shining city avenue or a country lane. (Although, come to think of it, if you’re in a war zone I’ll exempt you from this exercise.) L...

The best deal I’ve ever gotten is anything from an antique store or garage sale. I love the mirror in our hallway ($18) and the painted tray on our coffee table ($32). We also have a table in our breakfast knook that was free! So that’s a pretty good deal.
If I were hosting a dinner party and could invite people from my fantasy guest list it would include a lot of really funny, smart people. I would invite famous people like Barack Obama, Stephen Colbert, John Stewart and Oprah to keep people on their toes and keep the conversation meaningful, yet fun. I would also love to invite Natalie Portman and Barbara Walters. And maybe Charlie Rose, only because I’d like to see what happens when you get him in a room with a bunch of people. I enjoyed reading about Nettie Thomson’s Saturday jobs, especially the bit at the end. (I won’t spoil it for you.)
There’s a short clip from Radio 4’s Today programme about growing old. It’s lovely, and clever, and wise. You can listen to it here.
I enjoyed this blog post about letters of proposal, acceptance and refusal in Victorian England. It’s a window into a very different world. And although I am delighted to live in the twenty-first century, where I get the po...

Due to my activities at the Society of Surgical Oncology meeting in San Antonio, somehow I didn't manage to crank out a bit of that Insolence, Respectful or Not-So-Respectful, that you all crave. So, given that this is Friday, I thought I'd to a "rerun" of a bit of classic woo. This one's a little newer than the reruns I usually do, only two and a half years old. So, if you've been reading less than two years, it's new to you!

In the nearly two years of its existence, I have strived to feature only the finest and most outrageous woo that I can find. It's mostly been medical quackery but sometimes it's other topics as well. Oddly enough, the vast majority of the woo featured nearly every week never attracts the attention of any regulatory bodies. Given the hilariously, extravagantly pseuds...

Ever since I started this little vanity bit known as Your Friday Dose of Woo, lo, these nearly three years ago, when I introduced the waiting blogosphere to the woo-tastic quantum homeopathic stylings of Lionel Milgrom, I've occasionally wondered if I had started out with too much woo.
I’m giving out books as part of World Book Night tomorrow. (I have increasingly mixed feelings about this. More on that over the weekend.)
And I’m giving out cupcakes along with my books.
So, in honour of the incomparable pleasure that is Eating Cake While Reading A Good Book, I offer you my failsafe ‘Vanilla Variations’ cupcake recipe.
To make a dozen cupcakes you will need:
125g butter at room temperature
125g caster sugar (I use golden)
2 eggs
125g self-raising flour
A tablespoon of vanilla extract (not essence)
A glug or two of full fat milk
muffin cases (not cupcake cases. This matters: it gives you the optimum cake to icing ratio.)
Heat the oven to 160 degrees celsius or so. Beat together the butter and sugar until it’s really, really pale, or get a mach...

I spent last weekend in London. The focal point was Tarran’s second birthday party. (I was there when Tarran was born. I wrote about it here.) But I got to spend a lot of time with a lot of people I love. My dear friends, Louise and Scarlet. My godson, Ellis, pictured here at Tarran’s party:

The birthday boy, here with Joy, who is his godmother (and bought him the duck Ellis was so pleased with).

My son Ned, whom Ellis worships as only a 5 year old can worship a 16 year old who plays Star Wars with him.

My goddaughter, Evie, who is nearly three. To celebrate, we went to the Build A Bear Workshop in Wimbledon and, as you’d expect, we built a bear. She has pink shoes, a pink dress, pink shorts, a t-shirt with mostly pink princesses on, and is called…. Pinkie. (Also...

A little while ago I introduced you to my garden studio, a space for writing. Not even two months on, I’m here to tell you that it’s one of the best things ever.
When I’m not working away, my day is shaking down into a good solid routine. Once Joy has gone to school, I fight Hope for sofa space and write blog posts and emails and have a little play on Twitter. Then I make a flask of coffee and I head for the studio. Even though it’s only 20 metres or so from the house, the wifi doesn’t reach that far, so once my laptop and I are settled at the desk, we are distraction-free. (In case I forget how focussed I am, I’ve written a quote from Kingsley Amis on a postcard and stuck it on the noticeboard over the desk, where all the book notes are. It says: &#8216...

I really enjoyed writing this week’s Cancer Free Friday post about knitting.
Of course, I always enjoy writing about knitting, but this one was especially pleasurable. Thinking about why, I realised that usually, even when I’m writing about knitting, I’m writing about cancer.
Which, on one level, is fair enough. This is ‘Bah! to cancer’, not ‘Yay! for knitting’, and the endless potential, therapy, pleasure and sense of achievement provided by doodling about with sticks and string has been critically important in getting me through cancer. (I wrote about what both knitting and cancer have taught me, here. There’s a piece on why knitted socks have come to mean so much here. And there’s a post on a lovely knitty coincidence here.)
But yest...

This week on Cancer Free Friday I thought you might like to see a couple of my recently completed knitting projects.
The first is a scarf. I finished it a couple of weeks ago, and decided to photograph it on the windowsill as it was late afternoon and the light was fading. So here is a picture of my finished scarf, by happy chance photographed alongside a picture of Grandma Boyd (she of the snowdrops) as a girl.

Now, you will hear a lot of talk from us knitters about how everything about knitting is wonderful and marvellous, but this scarf is an example of when it’s not, quite. It’s an example of when probably around 60 hours of knitting time, some pretty yarn from Wollmeise* and a really lovely pattern – Lubov – (from the splendid Brave New Knits) came together an...

This week, I thought you might like to join Joy and I for a walk on our local beach at Druridge Bay.
(All of the photos in this post were taken with the flash on my camera switched off. It was 4pm when we arrived.)
We parked, and walked through the nature reserve to the dunes.

This picture is blurred but I really want to show you the light:

Hope doesn’t care about the light, she has scampering to do.

The beach was quite crowded. (I’m being serious. There is a person in the distance, and we met another dog walker. That’s crowded for this beach.)

Even the tank traps, blocks of grey concrete put down during the Second World War, look lovely, somehow.

We headed for home.

(This post is part of my campaign to get all of the people I love to move to Northumberland. My ma...

SB: Readers may well know you from the Me And My Big Mouth blog, but you’ve launched another one. Care to tell us about it?
SP: Well, seeing as you asked. I am going to read a short story every day of 2011 and blog about it. At the time of writing I am two weeks in and haven’t buggered it up yet.

Earlier in the week I wrote about my difficulties in getting my hospital care transferred to Newcastle, and in doing so I reminded myself of how funny I always found the fact that there was no cancer-based activity at St George’s on a Friday. No breast clinic, no oncology clinic, no answering the phones. (Oh, no, sorry, that last one is every day.)
But then I thought…. there’s some potential here. I’m going to take this piece of hospital oddness and make a virtue of it.
Welcome to Cancer Free Friday.
From now on, on Fridays, I won’t be writing about cancer here (though there will still be a blog post). On Fridays, I will do my level best not to talk about cancer, or read about cancer, or do anything cancer-related.

Brand names make it to the OED!

I first created this post in 2007, and apart from the home page, it has been the most viewed page on my blog (over 6,000 views). So here it is again, with a link to the latest OED update.
It’s fascinating to peruse the new words added to the OED. (Here is the latest update, December 2010.) Brand names often enter the language as generic terms, and I’ve listed a few of them below. (I wonder who they have in mind with the word “flip-flopper”. And what on earth is a cotylosaur? I thought “chicklet” meant a little piece of gum, but I was disappointed to discover that it means a small chick or girl.)
Google
Goo·gle – verb: to use the Google search engine to find information on the Internet.
Botox
bo·tox – noun or verb – A proprietary name...

Groan-producing Friday Funnies from the whole year (I couldn’t think of a complete sentence of alliteration, OK?).
BTW many of these cartoons are created by me. Some posts are links. If you’d like to use some of mine, please feel free to. If any of the artworks are, by accident, copyright, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to amend.

Friday Funnies – quick quiz, the Best Problem Solving Strategy Ever, and how to make a meeting very, very brief
Friday Funnies – what happens when you’ve worked in pain management too long, and some wonderfu links

Here is a selection of Christmas songs, ranging from the sublime (the Opera Company of Philadelphia’s Hallelujah Chorus – A Random Act of Culture) to the ridiculous (Adam Sandler’s Santa Song). Turn up your sound, and have a very Merry Christmas!

Tom Lehrer. A Christmas Carol
Sufian Stevens. That was the Worst Christmas Ever another version
David Wall. Christmas Ditty (scroll down)
Eartha Kitt. Santa Baby
Adam Sandler. Santa Song
Note: If you did not like this, you will certainly not enjoy Sandler’s Chanukah Song
This isn’t a song, but it is certainly enjoyable: The Digital Story of the Nativity (Source: ANNE T-V's BLOG)

15 Years Ago on Psych Central
Seek Out Help
One of the first things I wrote for the website was an editorial piece about how you should nearly always seek out psychotherapy in addition to medications for treatment of mental health issues (which is even more true today than it was 15 years ago). And I announced a call for articles for a new online mental health magazine called Perspectives.

Holiday spirit disappears as you age. When I was a kid, Christmas was my favorite time of year. Going out to see the Christmas lights at Portland’s International Raceway, going to the Grotto to hear the choir, watching the Nutcracker and reading the Polar Express. But now? Mostly I’m just worried about not crashing my budget on presents but making sure I buy something people will like! What kind of celebration of Jesus’ birth is that?
The holidays are incomplete without holiday decor. I really don’t feel a shift in the season until the tinsel and ornaments and baby Jesus in His manager are out and on display. Otherwise, it just looks like the rest of the year, and what fun is that?

My favorite things to do around the holidays is look at Christmas lights. I am reall...

SuperTherapist decided that if she gave out any advice today, she may just need to fear for her life, so she asked me to help out. SuperTherapist may need your help to vanquish the peripheralist demons from her memory – therapeutic videos to soothe the soul.

If you haven’t heard them before – and you get a chance to see them live – just GO! These guys are at least partially responsible for the odd sounds coming from my house over the last day…

And an example of virtuosity of another kind…

Enjoy your weekend!

Black Friday shopping is something I learned about only when I moved to the United States; it is a traditional part of the Thanksgiving holiday, but this aspect of the celebration never caught on with me. The second Thanksgiving that I was here, a friend coerced me into getting up at 3:00 a.m. to be in line at 4:00 a.m. to shop at a local store. I still haven’t recovered.
This past Friday, my oldest son — I call this one the Wise Guy — was visiting from Toronto and we decided to simply cruise the mall in the afternoon. Still, it was a lot of walking and people to navigate, so I don’t call that a great shopping excursion. In fact, I ended up feeling worn and broken by the time I got home. Waking up for the next few days proved to be a painful experience. The pain in my right hip has...

Shopping Under Pressure: Cyber Monday Psychology

If your shopping budget wasn’t completely sapped by Black Friday sales, it’s now Cyber Monday, and instead of catching up on work emails, you’re probably sifting through enticing online sales and contemplating whether you should go for those boots that are on sale an com with free shipping. Am I right? But according to Psychology Today’s blog, you’re probably making shopping decisions differently than you normally would – and you might end up with the wrong stuff in your closet because of it.
We’ve all been there: Standing around in a crowded store, clutching the last set of pink mixing bowls that’s marked down 30%, trying to decide whether to seize the deal and keep our nonrefundable purchase, or leave it to some other shop...

1. Black Friday is a waste of time.
2. Christmas shopping this year will include lots of online shopping.
3. Holiday shopping makes me makes me anxious. I don’t do well under pressure.
4. This year my Christmas list will include lots of fun, creative items to make our new apartment more like a home.
5. Bargain hunter, or full price shopper? Mostly bargain hunter. Full price only if I need the item right away.
6. The best and worst things about shopping are best: scoring an item you absolutely love. worse: having a particular item in mind, and not being able to find anything like it anywhere and feeling like a total failure in life.

Homemade Belgian Waffles to Fuel “Black Friday”

If you don’t have a waffle maker maybe you should put one on your list.
We made the original recipe for Belgian waffles and it is worth your time!
You will need to use yeast. You’ll need to separate yolks and whites. You’ll also need to let the batter sit for an hour.
So brew your coffee and tea and plan for a wait. But once the batter is ready, you will have beautiful Belgian waffles in minutes.
Prepare simply with a light dusting of powdered sugar. You don’t need syrup or butter on these guys. (Well there is a stick of melted butter in the batter anyway!)
Enjoy your “black Friday” whether you’re out shopping or not!

After trying to come up with something suitably pithy or funny, I give up. The sun is shining and it’s way too nice to be indoors, so here’s parcour – with a twist!
Don’t do this over the weekend, you WILL break things, not a good look. And you can be sure that Sheba-the-wonderdog will NOT be doing this either – not even for food!

Awwww! Cute animal story?
Just read on… but first, my humble and most sincere apologies to any German readers.
THE GERMAN TOURIST JUMPED IN AND SAVED THE DOG.

UPON GETTING BACK UP ON THE BRIDGE HE CHECKED THE DOG OUT AND TOLD THE OWNER THAT

“ZER DOG IS OK, AND VILL BE FINE”
SHE ASKED IF HE WAS A VET?

HE REPLIED, “I’m not only VET, I’M DARNED SOAKED!”

Twenty four years ago, diabetes became part of my life and with it came these vials of bandaid-scented insulin and a potluck of syringes. Diagnosed in 1986, I came in just as at-home blood sugar monitoring was becoming common and well into the age of disposable insulin syringes. What I didn't realize was how different life would have been, were I diagnosed sixty-four years earlier. How my life wouldn't have had nearly the quality it has now, nor the length. Because if I were diagnosed sixty some odd years earlier, I wouldn't have had access to lifesaving insulin. Insulin is not a cure. That's for certain. But it is a way of keeping myself alive, until such time that there's a better option. (See also: hurry up, researchers) While I was in New ...

Last night, seeking to expand the name of Orac rather than his waistline, I did a skeptical meetup with a local skeptics' group to discuss the topic of quackademic medicine. A fine time was had by all (at least as far as I can tell). What that means, unfortunately, is that I got back too late last night to have time to prepare a helping of new insolence that you all crave. (And you know you do crave it so.) Fortunately, the archives are here and chock full of excellent woo to republish from time to time, perfect for this situation, and I'm taking advantage of them now. The installation from Your Friday Dose of Woo that I'm about to repost dates back almost three years. If you haven't been reading at least since early 2008, it's new to you, and if you have been reading that long, thanks and...

I’m a big fan of the Fill in the Blank Friday meme. Then I found out it is created and organized each week by Lauren, who also lives in Portland, and that made me love it even more!
Feel free to play along!

1. My last haircut was at the beginning of October. My bangs got a bit chopped off last year, and now I’m working with a lovely woman in Manhattan who does my hair. She’s a few years older than me and she is the first hairdresser who I actually want to talk to! She gives me hugs when she sees me.

2. My most daring hair moment was When I was about 13, I cut my hair all the way up to my chin. Everyone thought it made me look so mature, but my hair has a wave in it and after I washed it, it just looked terrible and was really hard to keep it looking good. That’s...

SuperTherapist has been on the job, and passes on these tips to make your days go well!

Can you tell I’m procrastinating?

You know, I have seen worse clangers – like the neurosurgeon who said ‘I have no knowledge of psychology, but I’m sure if you ask them to assess [Joe Bloggs] they will write you a lengthy report that you can’t understand…’

And this one is because I will be The Perfect Mother – one day – and to do so I will need SuperTherapist’s gear. Or something in the form of liquid refreshment. Child of my Womb is coming to stay the night and sew a dress. I may go grey before the night is over. But I will be grey and fat because we both luuuuurve chocolate!

Too many bloggy bits to share today to wait for Friday. So here's today's Friday Six ... only the Wednesday edition. :)1. The ADA I grew up with wasn't exactly known for it's outreach to the type 1 community, and to be honest, I always felt that their methods were antiquated. Until very recently, when I met Dayle Kern and listened to her speak passionately about the efforts being made by her organization (the ADA) to reach out. And the proof is in the post pudding, it seems, because the ADA has started their own blog. With Dayle at the forefront of the ADA's social media outreach, I think things are going to start looking up for Big Red. 2. Also, there's a new meet-up group being put together in the DFW area in Texas. Lindsey Guerin, bl...

I found this hilarious South Park video about Facebook Friends on Jud’s Education Emporium. It was used to illustrate that “friending” doesn’t mean a lot, although in this video it does mean an awful lot to some real-life friends of Stan. In real life this happens too. See Paul’s “outpouring” on Facebook…..
I just apprehensively drove to my father’s pharmacy feeling it was best to do what I was about to do face to face instead of on the phone. I needed relief and I needed it today. Friday’s are dad’s slow day with a co-pharmacist on duty. Mom says he sits in his office on the Internet and watching TV. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to ask for help in getting some sleep. The Ambien is just not working any longer and my Klonopin are like taking a placebo. “Dad?” I asked as we walked out into the pharmacy away from the busy counter. “Do you have any thing over the counter I can take for sleep?” “We both know you can’t take Benadryl,” dad replied as we surveyed all our options where the OTC medications are kept. “You’ve have addiction issues with it in the past. ...

My world may have been rocked by the late-night quakes, but my humour remains THE SAME! Sorry.
I was talking to SuperTherapist the other day, and she whispered some sayings to help maintain that sense of calm and serenity that is necessary when returning to work after a week away. I’m not so sure this was all that helpful...”Be patient and achieve all things. Be impatient and achieve all things faster.”
Neither were these, probably…

Be aware of your body.
Be aware of your perceptions.
Keep in mind that not every physical
sensation is a symptom of a terminal illness.
To practice Zen and the art of therapeutic
motorcycle maintenance, do the following:
get rid of the motorcycle.
What were you thinking? – and you’ve run out of duct tape.

I was just standing in mom and dad’s kitchen as Helen cooked supper. We finally had something fried this evening much to my elation. Helen was cooking English peas with carrots, fried Swiss steak, baked potatoes, fruit salad, and biscuits. Dad had just arrived home and changed clothes into his pajamas. “Mr. John? Are you going to bed?” Helen asked as dad passed through the kitchen to survey Helen’s meal. Dad laughed. “I am going out on the porch to read for awhile until supper is ready. I am just getting ready to relax.” Dad and I don’t say much to each other these days. We just chose to disagree about the course I am taking with my life. Dad worries about my retirement and disability ending in May.
How many times have you said a silent prayer for an aerobics video that focused on your face? Well, today you’re in luck. Just make sure your window shades are closed. Otherwise, your neighbors might think you’re having some kind of fit. And imagine how embarrassing it would be to have to explain to the paramedics that you were just sending oxygen to your facial muscles. Also, does this remind anyone else of their intro to acting class during freshman year of college?

In the 1960s, spray deodorant was a cool new way to smell great all day. Now it’s mainly used by people in the locker room who like to get chatty while naked. Where did spray deodorant go wrong?
Also: Never, ever be the tail end of a donkey as a Halloween costume with your husband. Especially if he sweats a lot.

Happy Friday the 13th! Anything spooky going on where you are? I know at least some of you are at the American Psychological Association’s 118th convention in San Diego (I’m not sure how spooky that is.). Being young and green, I was an eager beaver, wanting to learn everything I could about my field. I was also poor as heck and yet, my life seemed much more carefree back then. I studied full-time and worked part of the time as a...

Perfume commercials are always corny or pretentious. But this one, from 1985, reaches a new high on the cheesiness scale. Maybe it’s post-modernism or deconstructionism or existentialism. Or maybe it’s just hilarious. Man. Calvin Klein commercials really used to make you think.

A couple of days ago, I expressed my amusement at an e-mail sent to me by someone named "Carol." The amusement came primarily from the subject matter in the e-mail, which described something called a "biophoton ionizer," whatever that is. Knowing, as I do, how prevalent water woo is (after all, what is homeopathy but the grand daddy of all water woo?), I was naturally curious about what the heck a "biophoton ionizer" is. After all, what's the difference between a regular photon and a "biophoton"? What is the characteristic of the photon that makes it "bio," if you know what I mean. I was sure that there was some absolutely fantastic woo to be found, so much so that I decided that it was time for a new installment of Your Friday Dose of Woo, even after its relatively long hiatus.
D-Feast Friday: Prosciutto Wrapped Melon

I don't get any credit for this delicious snack at all. In fact, I wouldn't even know who to give credit to- I'm sure it's been around for a while now! Whenever I have a craving for something salty and sweet, this is one of the things I ALWAYS reach for. It takes little to no effort to prepare, is delicious on a hot day like today, and I don't have problems eating it as far as my diabetes is concerned. Typically, I use honeydew, but cantaloupe works just as well, too. Since melons are plentiful in the grocery stores now, you can be sure to find the perfect one to highlight the salty prosciutto. Usually, I use two 1/4" slices of melon and wrap the prosciutto around that for the perfect diabetes-friendly amount. Nutrition Data (1 serving)Calories: 17...

My "contribution" to this fabulous recipe sharing idea is what NOT to do
while cooking grilled cheese sandwiches. Do NOT try to multitask and
get things done while cooking.

I need to remember that I have burned the crap out of every grilled cheese sandwich I've made in the past few months, and pay closer attention.

Please, do not let your grilled cheese sandwiches end up like mine.

For the record, my kids would not touch them. I wasn't so picky and ate them anyway. (Source: Diabetes Daily)

Friday Funnies!

Here in New Zealand it is most definitely Friday in mid-winter. As regular readers will know, I’m not one given to recommend medications – but in deepest, darkest winter there comes a time whenI think it’s wise to consider effective treatments for our winter blues.
…This one works for kids too!
And I’m prescribing this one for my daughter, because she’s too smart to put up with dumb boys. And I’m too young to be a grandma.
Have a great weekend!
